so can they make a corp name with s******?
Everyone knows this is a play on ******
cause s******dly is not a word in any dictionary in the world!
Everyone does not know that. People that are in possession of the facts (and those that can be bothered to follow the link I posted) show that it probably dates back to the very early 18th century. The dictionaries I checked give an approximate date of 1706. ****** OTOH appears to have appeared nearly a hundred years later. Even then it wasn't considered particularly offensive until very recently.
The rhyme 'Ten Little Indians' wasn't originally called that and society in general didn't think that the original version was offensive.
Especialy with the UK's history of slavery. Yeah , I wonder how good that would hold up in court?
It wouldn't even come to court. Laws cannot be applied retrospectively.
Or perhaps you didn't understand my point? Words change over time. The point I was making was that 's******' predates '******'. Furthermore neither word was originally considered offensive. The fact that one word has since become offensive and even in some contexts illegal has no baring on the other word.
Or are you going to ban 'twit' on the grounds that in some countries with a change of vowel it is considered vulgar slang for female genitalia? As another example of how stupdid 'censorship by spelling' is - that same word in the UK is generally considered to be a variation of 'twit'. The vulgar has been consiged to history. -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

Again im going to have to disagree here. You are just trying to make into a racial issue. You are standing on your soapbox flapping your arms and screeching till your lungs busrt. You are trying to do everything you can to make it a racial issue tbh.
I am a Afro-American and I found it offensive.
saying you are an Afro-American is in fact very racist. only a true racist would say that. which, by the way, most of the world's population are in fact racist.

Are you saying that I am knitpicking? No I am not doing that. I am simply asking for the rules to be enforced.
In this we are in agreement. I too would like to see the rules enforced. I am not your opponent in this matter.
EVE is a worldwide/multi-cultural game this fact will leave many gray areas in the rules as to what is deemed vulgar or inappropriate.
For example: Pakimosher Until today I had never heard of the term, let alone the fact that it is considered derogatory and offensive to Pakistani people. My ignorance of the term does not sheild me from a possible "name" change if CCP deemed it offensive. I would certainly inquire as to why the name was changed and why it is considered offensive.
Another example: Piranha In my country the use of of this word can be very offensive, depending on the context that it is used in. I also know that the vast majority of native english speakers do not know this. The use of this word as a name in EVE is not offensive. In this case it all depends on the context.
A personal experience of mine.... I am an immigrant to the US. I am also a female. Imagine my surprise when I was approached at my job by a British man who asked me if he could "Borrow a rubber". "Rubber" is slang for a condom in the US. It wasn't until I noticed the confused look on his face did it dawn on me that there was a misunderstanding taking place. So I asked him "What do you mean"? It was then that he explained that the word "rubber" is used to describe a pencil eraser in the UK. Needless to say we both enjoyed a good laugh.
With thousands upon thousands of creative and unoffesive names to choose from I can't understand why you would choose "Futtbucker". If I am misjudging your intent I'm sorry.
Would you care to elaborate on why you chose the name?
If you feel wronged by CCP's actions, file a petition, state your case. I just don't feel it is polite of you to post on a public forum pointing the finger at others who may have "slipped through the fence"(my first word got censored so I chose fence) of EVE's policies. That is rabblerousing and not constructive.
Best wishes

Edited by: Snake Doctor on 03/11/2007 15:24:04 Okay, okay, okay enough's enough.
I'll step out of normal character here for a second due to the nature of the discussion and say this:
I can see where this thread is going and I don't like it. Please be respectful of others, even if you're only ribbing them.
Understand that there are many words (in the English language especially) that are offensive to others. Understanding both the intent and the etymology of those words is equally as important as the word itself. Taking a word like "******" and saying it applies to the word "S******" would be incorrect. To get upset about it would be fruitless. Etymology of the word does not match the one you've just given it.
Words only have power when given. To those who wish to offend others with a word: stop. Conversely, to those who wish to find offense in a word: lighten up, there may be many different uses and spellings of a word that are unoffensive.
As a member of (2) minority groups myself, I've come across many derogatory terms (aimed at me) in my time, and have never once given any time to it. While it is inconsiderate of the other person to deride me, it would be a waste entirely to get upset about the situation.
So---
Take a time out here a second from this thread. Step back, calm down, and please come back in a fashion that takes neither side, as someone is bound to start a fight.

Exactly, getting upset is pointless and is probably the reason anyone would even make up 'offensive' terms. I`m enjoying the game and if people get all offended by things then oh well. ----

Quote: so can they make a corp name with s******?
Everyone knows this is a play on ******
cause s******dly is not a word in any dictionary in the world!
No, it's not a word in any dictionary. As such, there's at least 3 different interpretations of what words it's signifying.
The one you're picking up on - '******'. Obviously racially offensive. If like you're saying, it's simply 'hiding' that word and meaning, then yes, you're right in that it's potentially far more offensive than futtbucker (which is also about 'hiding' that word and meaning by inverted the first two letters of each word)
However, there's also 's******,' a word that is synonomous in meaning to 'snicker.' This has nothing to do, as far as I know, with the word '******' yet is just adding an extra s. But the meaning is completely innocent and benign. To put a '-dly' at the end changes it from a verb (to s****** at something) and makes it more applicable as a description or characteristic - though not actually a way 's******' is ever used in.
Then there's '*****rdly' which falls somewhere between the two. An actual, genuine word meaning (I think roughly) the equivelent of stingy. Doesn't, as far as I know, have racial connotations given it's a 'ggar' not a 'gger' though I suppose it could have been a development from that.
To be honest, I see it simply as a crush together of the words 'S******' (snicker) and '*****rdly' (stingy) to make 'S******dly.' That said I have no idea of the intentions of the people who made it, it just seems the most plausable to me. Keep in mind that the way language is structured, you have instances of words sounding very like other words, or words within words that if taken out of context would mean something else.
For example - 'Shuttlecock' the projectile used in badmington has nothing to do with whats between a man legs, but is within that word. (There are probably better examples I'm sure, but that sprung to mind)
What, in my opinion, damages your creadibility, is that you aren't citing S******dly as being a racist name, you're striking out because your own name was considered imappropriate and you're attempting to demonstrate the unfairness of this. As such you've gone straight to the worst way it could be interpreted and ignored any others. The difference between 'S******dly' to 'Futtbucker' and 'PakiMosher' is that with the last two, the intention is obvious (though context bound, as pointed out earlier, you might need to be from the UK to understand the last one - it seems likely from the complete ignorance of this that they weren't dealing with a stupid GM, just one that wasn't from the UK so didn't put those terms together) the intention of 'S******dly' given at least 3 meanings can be read into it, isn't as obvious, though the possibility is there to be read into.
