Wine (Cedega, crossover - same deal) is just an api layer where windows os function calls get translated into their linux equivalents.
An app like eve has (to simplify) 2 kinds of code: Your own code which is just what you write and compile - and that's the same binary code regardless of os you are running on - and calls to os api. The latter is just a large set of functions with parameters in certain shared libraries (called ".DLL" on windows and ".so" on linux). What wine does is not re-implement all of windows - just offer the same api - and then translate it to equivelant calls on linux.
The part of Eve that's written in python is mostly protable to begin with.
So - except for a more or less thin portability layer an Eve using wine/Cedega/Crossover *is* a native app. And any app written for several OS would use a portability layer so you can basicaly write your code once and then just recompile for different target platforms. It just so happens that in this case the portable api looks like windows api. shrug - Perhaps not the most elegant looking api - but not necessarily slower because of that and anyway a problem (if any) for the programmers - not users.
I have been using wine since early this year (switched from Windows to Ubuntu November 06 - booting into windows just for Eve - until the last serious bugs got eradicated early 07). I'm glad it's officialy supported now which should lessen/remove the occasional problem with patch days (when wine sometimes needs a few days to catch up with breaking changes). I also hope that eve voice will be available this way (the *only* thing I am missing while using wine). I couldn't care less *how* they made it portable.
I stopped booting into my windows partition > 6 months ago. (ok - that's cheating a bit- I have 2nd computer with old windows that I use just for Ventrilo/TS - looking forward to get rid of that too).
For me 2007 has been the long awaited year of the Linux Desktop breakthrough.
You managed to have working music and sound effects in Eve under wine? If yes, please tell me how you done that :-/

Edited by: Glengrant on 05/11/2007 01:34:55 I did have sound working with wine - until a while ago. Dunno of it is a problem with recent wine/eve patches - or recent changes with audio support in Ubuntu (pulseaudio?). I didn't do anything special - it just worked - until it don't anymore a couple months or so ago.
I just played a bit with the official client. Better fps out-of-the-box than I had with wine (was ok with wine - good with the new client).
I had the same black window after splash as others had - disabling audio support (audio=0, voiceanabled=0) in prefs.ini took care of that. Though means still no sound for me. But that's likely a problem with my also config on my hardware.
Only real problem I couldn't solve so far (only kicked at it for a few minutes though) is that the mouse cursor is captured within eve window - can't get outside (I set resolution to 1680x1050 while my screen has 1920x1200). Can't alt-tab either. Switched from fullscreen to windowed because fullscreen gave me horribly low resolutrion (probably 1024x768) and also couldn'z alt-tab to other apps- like firefox for example - unacceptable :-).

OK, I have an addendum to my previous post. It appears that I can indeed run Eve, but only directly from the .dmg file! In other words, when I just launch the file from the mounted image it works fine, but when I copy the program to my HDD it suddenly becomes a program that is unrecognizable by the OS (Leopard). For the life of me I can't figure out what would cause this to happen!
Any thoughts?

I was on the closed beta test. This new testing client does the same thing that gimped me on the closed test. On my main box, I'm a cedega+EVE user. If I install the beta, it over writes the existing cedega installation (no choices to move it) and completely borks both the testing and the main client. As a CEO of an active corporation in game, I don't have the time to "back n' forth" this box for testing.
(main machine x2 3800 dual core/ nvidia 7950GT 512 meg ram /2 gig corsair ram / 300 gig sata / onboard sound / ubuntu 7.04
On the secondary testing machine it installs fine, but logo freezes and then ctd's with no apparent errors other than the python issue which isn't really the 'crash'.
The 2nd box is an older cpu/gfx, but IS using an external USB sound solution (creative sb live external), and THIS is what causes the problems as the config tests fail on sound no matter which solution (alsa or oss) is selected. Copying prefs.ini from a working installation and zero'ing out the audio does not resolve the problem. The sblive DOES work with other applications with no issue.
The temporary testing on the primary machine yielded lower fps results than current cedega 6.03 engine + EVE tranquility client, and also lower FPS results than an existing wine .9.48 + EVE tranquility client. This may be due to overhead, or less than optimal defaults to the gddb settings for the EVE client, but this isn't ready for prime time imho.

Running OK on my MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Core duo/4GB RAM, System 10.4.10/ Nvidia 8600 mobile 256MB grphics card.
* Frame rate is down, 40-50fps compared to 60-70fps under XP when using bootcamp to run.
* Keyboard/trackpad differences - I need to command-click instead of a two finger track pad click to get the screen contextual menus to run
* Missing window mode - which I like to use.
* Odd graphic glitch, (tried to screen capture but couldn't) A rectangle near the ship status wheel became lighter than the general background, and persisted while autopiloting around. The rectangle is a bit wider than the status wheel, with encompassing the upper half of the wheel and some of the background. The background in the rectangle is lighter, but the wheel is unaffected.
* When some rats at a gate tried to kill me there were a number of frame rate stutters, which smoothed out later - everytime some new object is added to the scene there is a distinct frame rate pause. I assume the support libraries need optimizing further. When just in a jump transition, the frame rate hit 120fps monetarily, so I think the engine is capable of raw pixel pushing - but the 3D object list construction would appear to be slow.
Otherwise runs pretty well. I'd say very useable for all but complex combat. Ideal for mining/empire and possibly PvE activities. Not at absolute max performance for fleet/gang PvP perhaps, but that will come with time I expect. Well done.
I will try some missions tonight and see how they go.
Network on OSX is infinitely more stable than under XP.
Thanks

Thanks.
Damn, altpost... CBF swapping, sorry... Multiplicity *MIGHT* run under cedega (good luck!) or you could switch to synergy (which runs on pretty much everything)... unfortunately it doesnt correctly maintain mouse states on system swap, so full screen eve will minimise to taskbar every time you swap.
Now when is my native PDP-11 client coming out?? :)

EDIT: Installing Python 2.4, and editing the ~/.cedega/.ui/runGUI script to force it to use that version, gets rid of this error but doesn't make the login screen appear.
Here are my run info, if they are of any help. I can run eve online without issues with my Gentoo Linux. Even if it isn't officially supported.

Install lsb-release.
I have it installed and am getting some error messages from it, though this is in debian testing..

Altposting again, sorry. Run as root?? This is the linux client, not the windows client... you dont run ANYTHING as root unless its absolutely nescessary, and if you feel its ABSOLUTELY nescessary, then "sudo /usr/bin/eve" and live with any deleterious results from your foolishness.

Hey Triath Lon,
I did indeed copy the file to the Applications folder, though I don't really think that should matter. It goes from being a perfectly workable file in the .dmg image to being a file that allegedly isn't supported by my architecture (MacBook running Leopard). For some stupid reason the copying process is breaking the file, and I'll be damned if I can figure out why! I just repaired permissions (including the Remote Desktop SUID error that has plagued Leopard) and it's still not working, not that I expected that to fix the problem.
Cheers

Well, i don't get to install Leopard till tomorrow - i don't want to install it on my Mac Pro, and i left my MacBook at work... so i can't replicate your problem. That, however, is very strange. I have no idea how coping could brake your game...

In the end I took a photo of the graphic glitch: http://miocene.anu.edu.au/~ralph/eve/PB050074.jpg
The lightened are might be a text area for status text? Maybe it just doens't show on higher contrast PC default gammas (2.2 vs 1.8 gamma default MacOS). Hope you can see it in a PC browser!

Slackware 12 here:
It abruptly dies after displaying the splash screen for several seconds. No errors returned and the history.txt records a 'STARTUP [3]'. I've even tried editing the prefs.ini, as some have suggested, to no avail.
Is there a way I could run the logserver to check for errors?

I played around with this earlier on my Macbook that I got last year, and from what I can tell it works fine. I even installed leopard on it yesterday. My only complaint is that zooming in and out is a bit unresponsive, but It might just be my touchpad...
Er, the point is I'm looking forward to the official release.

yay, finally the download finished over night.
install went mac typically smooth on my MBP (nvidia 8600M GT 256mb). game started up fine. everything looks good on the first look. fps was at around 22-30 fps in a 1024x768 window. have to see how the fps will be in a crowded system.
for the mac users that wonder about the window mode, just press command+enter.
just one glitch i've encountered, after i was afk for a few minutes while being docked the game was frozen, music was still playing but UI wasn't responding anymore.

Intalled on OSX Tiger Macpro with 1900xt ATI card and 2 gigs of ram.
Works perfectly. Had to dupilcate the package in order to run 2 instances. Is there anyway to do this whithout having a 1 Gig Eve file for each instance?
On windows I forced antialiasing with my ati driver but OSX has no comparable option - anyone know a way to force antialiasing in osx?
BTW this is the greatest thing since I first installed eve! Yay for OSX version. Now I can run ichat, flip between instances with xpose and start making eve widgets!

I've the same problem with my gentoo-box as some others here I can see the splashscreen but after it nothing happens.. I see 'winserver' and 'wine' is runngin in the background but no loginscreen appears. I also did the copy of the prefs.ini from my cedega installation which didn't change anything. setting the eulaagreed=0 also did nothing
I'm running out of ideas atm...

Go to the eve configuration choice that is placed in the menu. Run ALL of the tests. My bet is you have alsa/oss fail. If ANY of those tests fail, you will have problems with EVE running.
