Go to the eve configuration choice that is placed in the menu. Run ALL of the tests. My bet is you have alsa/oss fail. If ANY of those tests fail, you will have problems with EVE running.
I pass all the tests, still splash & crash.
For me too! The funny thing is that I already have a working cedega version (with the "old" windows binaries). I can start eve with this installation but I can't with the new client

I'm already in FD-MLJ and will be there for some pew-pew testing tonight.
But what I really want to know is how to get my mouse and keyboard back from the eve window. It's just rude to steal them until EVE is exited, not to mention that i have to restart X when eve doesn't exit properly.
A small guide with some pointers on running the linux and mac versions wouldn't hurt btw.
This is all on ubuntu linux + nvidia 8600GT. -- .sig apathy ftw |

Tried the linux client... I am staying with wine for now, it's much more stable (read: windows client under wine does not die irregularly... this one does).
And wine doesn't force fullscreen mode, does not disable alt+tab and so on.

The thing about this install that hacked me off a bit is that it installs INTO the old cedega install...and then will fail to run as its trying to use the old client. I had to move my dot cedega folder to a backup location, remove (entirely) the cedega install and THEN install the new eve client.
If you have an existing cedega install, it will mess it up.
This client needs to be installed where the USER wants in order not to gimp up existing stuff. For instance, I use cedega for OTHER games, and having this eve specific install overwrite the base cedega install is completely not kosher. This needs to get resolved asap, imho.

There is a configuration program in the install for setting windowed mode amongst other things.
Instability with the desktop shortcuts is common to Cedega. Best to disable them all with the window manager tools and rely on the taskbar for control.

I tried the Mac version and the graphics actually look more detailed than running the pc client when i'm running under bootcamp on the exact same machine (Macbook Pro 17" 2GB RAM) The texture mip bias on the station interiors and exteriors looks better on MAC and a few other things look sharper in the mac version - maybe due to a half texel fetch offset somewhere in this versions shaders?
The dither option in the graphics menu does not appear to change anything due to only 24bpp frame buffer being selectable. There is some issues with graphical banding in the space environment background (skybox, or should I say spacebox? ) Looks like its more pronounced in areas with green space, maybe its DXT or 16bit instead of 24bit, other than that it renders fast and the ships look great.

You got the packaged client going then?

After uninstalling the current cedega (backing up the .cedega folder) and then doing a clean install of the eve linux client, yes. Success on the x2 3800 amd dual core box.
The xp2400 + fx5200 + sblive usb external sound = splash/n/crash.
When this goes live I will probably move to it on the main machines, but there are some gotchas with older hardware and definitely a show stopper with alsa/oss + usb external sound solutions. I'm also showing the eve linux package is lower fps-wise than cedega 6.03 or wine .9.48 but this may be just a bit of tweaking with the eve config panel for gfx settings.

so i better not dare to join any fleet ops with the mac client :(
what are your framerates with the mac client?

Same machine, better rates 40-50 inempty space , > 100 in jump transitions, but like you when ratting in a belt. Attacked a couple of Serp Admiral BS and a couple of Serp Frigates in my rifter. Frames rates dropped well below 20fps, with quite a few stutters/freezes. Could be bad in larger encounters.
*However* the graphics effects for the standard Serp hybrid ammo damage was way spectacular - big flashy rainbow bursts and *very* pretty. If this is a taste of some of the new graphics coming it is very nice.
So, overall the screen update rates are all over the place, with a much bigger range of performance than under the XP client., and about 30% slower on average in similar situations on same hardware. Underlying engine seems fine, just screen updates seem sluggish - hopefully will improve as this is developed. Not bad for a first release.

I think my problem may be that my distro is based on Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper). I don't have the option of upgrading just yet, but soon.

still no luck removing the old .cedega directory - reinstall eve and nothing changed. Splash appears, stayes for a few seconds and then dissapears without shoing any login-screen. No log files, no error ... nothing. I can't find any information about this problem since there is NO logfile about the startup-process

Solved my problem with EVE crashing on splash by (first installing the nvidia linux drivers which i hadn't put in) commenting out the GAME_OPTION line in /usr/bin/eve and editing the EVE program settings in the Cedega UI.
At least the game runs, sans bitmaps and text: http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/6955/evelinuxcieriesdd4.jpg
I'm running on a Geforce Ti 4200 128MB.

Greetings pilots!
ubuntu 7.10, intel 915 here - laptop.
With WINE the win32 client runs. However, there are several graphical glitches, most notable the "font corruption" problem along with the portrait generation problem, both related to UI. Let's hope with the new client these issues will be resolved. Also, I'm hopeful the UI will become simpler and "smarter". No subtle specular lights, no shading, no bitmaps that make no sense. Also an A+/A- option in every window!
Cheers!

Your problem is the Intel graphics I guess ... I have sh1ty graphics even in Windows with it.
Reading this thread, I guess CCP managed to make me stay with windows (apart from ati 8.42.3 driver problems I have) :-))

I just wiped my HDD and reinstalled Leopard. The first thing I did, w/o patching anything, was to try and copy Eve to the Apps folder, and the file is still unsupported (this is a new file that I d/l'd last night).
The only thing left as far as I can tell is to download ANOTHER copy of the image file with this new install. Is anyone else running Leopard on a MacBook? (I've seen Leopard on iMacs but I didn't notice a MacBook)
The only remaining issue that I could possibly imagine would be that a case-sensitive HDD format somehow screws up the file. That is, everything is OK so long as it is inside the image file, but once it is copied to the HDD the introduction of case-sensitivity interferes with a configuration file somewhere inside the package. Any Mac users here have a case-sensitive format?

Installed the client for Mac last night on Leopard, and everything worked fine. Now trying to start it up again and I get "Incompatible version (release)". Seems CCP turned off autopatching on the test server? Or is there something else going on here?
Besides from that, from the little testing I did last night, I seem to get a pretty constant framerate of 35-45 in station and in space, on a 2.2Ghz C2D MacbookPro with an ATI X1600. No artifacts during rendering, everything loads and seems to be usable. Go CCP :) |

My Macbook uses non-case-sensitive and Leopard, and the client works fine.

I've also been running the Mac client on Leopard with a Mac Pro. Work very smoothly. The HD is non-case sensitive.
How can I check the frame rate of the client? Is that an option somewhere?
Btw I'm also getting the "Incompatible release" now. |

Edited by: C Identity on 05/11/2007 17:38:54 I'm currently running EVE on a Macbook with Leopard, and it seems to work.... Amazing... The Intel graphics ain't performing that bad compared to windows.
Anyhow, it installed without a prob. Journalled non case sensitive HD.
On the iMac 20" with the X1600 I also have Leopard, and it works fine. Framerates might be a bit lower than with bootcamp, but remember this ain't a native client......

And yes, also incompatible release here now..... grmbl... I wanna play with this new Mac toy ;)

Edited by: WeeLB on 05/11/2007 17:41:50 Thanks for the replies everyone. It turns out that the program is not compatible with a case-sensitive HDD format, as I just got it to install without a hitch after another drive format. Funny, but I'm glad this problem cropped up because I did not realise that case-sensitive formats are a somewhat new MacOS feature (at least for non-server apps) and support may vary from app to app.
Thanks again for everyone's help!

It'd be nice to know where the installer downloads the files to, as in my case the install failed because it couldn't unpack it into a certain directory resulting in me having to redownload 800mb....

1.I installed the client in the Applications folder.
2.I run the client and enter 87.237.38.51
3.Put in account info as of October
4.And receive this error:
"Could not connect to the specified address. Odds are that you have not established and internet connection, the server isn't running, or the server address or port number was wrong"
I have and internet connection.
Running 10.4.10, Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16, 2gigs ram, NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT256mb
Any ideas?
