Edit 1: Is it possible to save that dat file it downloads? As much as I love watching my broadband connection download ~785 MB like nobody's business, I'd prefer to keep it around in case I need to reinstall the client again.
The files is downloaded in some folder in /tmp. I simply made a copy of it while it was installing...

Of course not. This is just an -"official" and sanctioned by CCP- way of having what many users have for many months now, using Cedega and Wine. :P

Originally by: Aethen Fijam I am afraid it would be impossible to port this game as it is to Linux without rewriting it from a scratch. Even though I appreciate that CCP thinks of players on platforms other than Windows.
No, they really don't... if they did, they would have thought of a non-winblows client... since the start, and not only now, as damage control.

Originally by: Conniving Connivier Hi I have the following problem:
I get to login screen, put 87.237.38.51, and login with my login/pass as of October 2nd. Than I get message "Incompatible Version", and only option I can choose is "OK". From here on the client does not give me an option to update.
Any suggestions?
thanks, Conni
I had that problem. Turned out I had copy/pasted the IP address and there was a trailing "space". I used backspace to delete it, and then it "saw" the update and downloaded it.

I can't find any key combination that gets me out temporarily (except, of course, ctrl-q and restarting).
I like to "tab out" to run a spreadsheet with manufacturing calculations. How do I do that with the Ubuntu version?

i'm getting about 40 fps in space on my macbook pro c2d with x1600. in windows via bootcamp it was more like 120 fps without any kind of performance tweaking.
while 40 fps are totally fine in general space flight, i wonder how this will perform in, say, a 10 v 10 engagement. for comparison: with crossover i get about 30 fps in space, but like 3-5 fps in a 10 v 10 fight.
also, i watched the livestream of eve fanfest for a little, more specifically the new graphics. how will the mac client handle this?
i would also appreciate a statement on windowed mode and multiple instances. because, let's face it, quite a large portion of eve gameplay is based around alts.

When you copy your cedega prefs.ini over the official client's prefs.ini be sure to set the eula agreement line to =0
After this game sometimes start... but most of time i get only that black window.

I like the Mac version a lot. I only found two things that were noticeably amiss...
1.) The audio '*****les' - periodically and seemingly on some actions or mouse movements. Apparently C R A C K L E S is a swear word... /shrug
2.) We're forced to play in Full Screen mode.
Of the two, the second option is the most problematic for me. All the other ways of playing EvE Online on the Mac at the moment seem to fail in this respect (so it must not be a trivial issue) - usually with a failure in syncing the mouse cursor or screen properly. As I usually play two characters from a single computer, this is somewhat of a disappointment.
Single-player though, runs very well and will come in quite handy. Still, single-player full-screen is currently possible under Crossover, Parallels, etc... so it's not really "new", so much as now officially supported.
Unfortunately, this is not the "able to delete my Bootcamp partition" release I was hoping for because of the limitation to Full-screen play.

Got the client running in my regular MacBook and with a superficial test, everything worked ok. I got the mentioned graphic glitches as well, though - mostly when docking and undocking.
But me likes this.

Porting EVE to UNIX (lin/mac/sol) is as easy as paying icculus (of icculus.org fame/sdl thru opengl) to port the engine and for on going patches. The EVE client is mostly stackless python and DX calls with mapped opengl alternatives so porting should really be a valid option.
This is done for a lot of other games and their respective servers. It is kind of a shame that CCP didn't sort through the options before diving into this and it will leave them with a limited future under Linux at least as wine pushes ahead with a stablised DX9c and DX10 with support from Crossover.
The bright side of course is that while Cedega can support the EVE client there is nothing stopping WINE/Crossover doing the same, which saves use from .net2 rubbish and the like. From my point of view, as a WINE user, this is a far more important step by CCP than releasing a wrapper client and I thank them for it. :)
Heres to a start in the right direction.
Now all we need is the new engine to work nicely as well! :D

Unfortunatly I have the mentioned problems with the graphics while comming out of warp and docking aswell. Further more the fps is not much to celebrate, which neither seams to be just for me. Other then that Im looking forward to the moment I can get on to TQ with it.

Not Wine, but Cedega.
Cedega started as an spin off of an old version of Wine, and has diverged from it since then. Crossover Linux, on the other hand, keeps the link with the Wine code base, and therefore contributes back the progresses and work they do on their product. This means, aside from other opensource concerns, that Cedega won't benefit from any new advancements in Wine and, at the same time, will have to work out their bugs and issues alone.
I have been a user of both products and must say I find Crossover Linux to work much better than Cedega. With the latter, EVE often stopped working after a patch was released, and had to wait several days for a solution to be found. With Crossover, everything just ran smoothly, and some details even worked better.
I think Codeweavers (makers of Crossover Linux) would have been a much better choice for the collaboration agreement with CCP leading to the Linux client: not only we would have a higher quality product, but would be contributing and improving Wine in the process. But, of course, that's just my personal opinion.

Well, the major issue is that they wrote their engine using DirectX, so that makes much more difficult to port the client to any other platform than Windows. Had they used OpenGL, a native client would have been on its way long ago probably.
Somehow it would have been nice if they had switched to an OpenGL engine with Trinity2 but it is understandable they didn't. After all, they already have the know-how and a lot of code written which uses DirectX, so such technology change would have been complex and more expensive.

w00t :D
I didn't seem to get a framerate drop switching from fullscreen to windowed which is good.
Getting between 30 and 40 fps in space on my Macbook Pro (2.2 C2D, 2gb RAM, GeForce 8600M GT 128mb). I've yet to see the graphical glitches others have mentioned, warping and jumping look completely normal to me.
I'd complain about the probable FPS during combat but to be honest I'm such a carebear now that unless my friends force me into it I hardly ever PvP xD

i had been running EVE under Crossover. there are some graghics issues (eg some map dislpays) that the testserver patch seems to have remedied. :)

Yet to try this, but thanks CCP, It is about time. This means I no longer have to boot out of windows and into linux to respond to support calls. YAY.
As some have complained about how this is emulated DX, I say get of your high horse.. for the moment a linux client is a minority market. Be thankful we have it. Lets hope more games makers follow suite.
