2.I run the client and enter 87.237.38.51
3.Put in account info as of October
4.And receive this error:
"Could not connect to the specified address. Odds are that you have not established and internet connection, the server isn't running, or the server address or port number was wrong"
I have and internet connection.
Running 10.4.10, Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16, 2gigs ram, NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT256mb
Any ideas?

Got it - Turn off Little Snitch if you have it running or create a rule for EVE and Wine.
However, now I am getting the Incompatible (release) error.

The only remaining issue that I could possibly imagine would be that a case-sensitive HDD format somehow screws up the file. That is, everything is OK so long as it is inside the image file, but once it is copied to the HDD the introduction of case-sensitivity interferes with a configuration file somewhere inside the package. Any Mac users here have a case-sensitive format?
My MacBook runs it perfectly. I will say I believe the case-sensitive FS is the root of your problem, as it's the root of quite a few problems.

Hi.
We're currently testing tomorrows official build on multiplicity and that is why the public testing has been closed. Next time you can run the client will be on Tranquility after tomorrows downtime at 1400 GMT. Any bugs that you have encountered can be reported here: https://bugs.eve-online.com/newbugreport.asp When you do so, please make sure you add information about your system so that we can determine the cause.
Please note that there will not be a patch available from the Test build that was released in this news article, to the new build that you need to connect to Tranquility. You will have to download the full official installer which will be available tomorrow after the patch has been deployed.
See you again after downtime.

I was in for a few beautiful moments this morning, you are my heroes CCP. Glad you can see that Windows isn't the only OS people want to play games on and that it will continue to be even more so in the future.
You rock, keep it up.

First of all, I applaud this step away from the evil empire and I want to emphasize that the following is not critical of that brave step, but offered as a starting point for further improvements to the eve client.
I run EVE primarily on FreeBSD using wine. There are several reasons for this, but the most important is that FreeBSD is my primary OS for doing work and EVE requires that one logs in more often than just playing the game --- one has to login to set the next skill to training. Being able to queue several skills to train would be a valued improvement here.
Currently, on FreeBSD with wine, the major bugs are the audio (inoperable) and some graphics bugs that mostly show up after one has been playing for some time --- I think there might be a memory leak related to this. Eve Voice is also not supported.
Let me emphasize at this point that EVE working under FreeBSD with wine (even unofficially) was key in my decision to join EVE. Had it not worked, I would not have purchased an account.
I do have a copy of XP for my laptop (a Dell XPS with a 7800 GTS in it)... and I do use it for gaming. Neverwinter Nights II and Oblivion don't work (at least not well) under wine. PvP and fleet play still require that I use windoze. Sound and eve voice are important there. For standard mission running and mining, however, I run without sound. It works well enough --- although for background mining, sound would be nice so I know when the rats arrive.
I have, in one of my many jobs, been tasked with developing and maintaining code that runs on more than 20 architectures including DOS, Windows, UN*X, and (open)VMS. There are many challenges to this task. Most of those challenges are moot with python. In fact, I would bet the only significant challenge to a full native port of the eve client is DirectX vs. OpenGL.
Now... my knowledge of GL comes from the time before "open" was added to it when I had a 4D-35 beside my desk with the optional 3000 watt video card beside it. At 5000 watts (total) and about 200 lbs, it was about as capable as my laptop is now. It was certainly noisier (although a good chunk of that was the 5 1/4 full height 1G disk it came with). Anyways... it impresses me that on-the-fly DirectX to OpenGL translation is possible without significant degredation in performance (although other people have mentioned pauses as new model items are added --- I do see this). Most amazingly, I am led to understand that this includes on-the-fly translation of pixel shader code.
Finally, to my point: Eve does not stress the performance of graphics cards. My laptop's fans do not appreciably spin faster when playing eve and the heat coming from the laptop seems normal (unlike NWN2 ... where you can cook things back there and the fans spin up to "hover" mode). I appreciate that the new DX10 and DX9 code in the upcoming release will look "prettier" ... but It's still unlikely to stress modern hardware. For this reason, I feel safe in saying that an OpenGL engine will give identical performance to a DirectX engine. Take that a step further, and given that OpenGL is available on all platforms, an OpenGL client should have no problems running natively on all systems --- even those not directly supported (like, say, a sun or even an OpenVMS alpha (heh))
It's great to see some support for Linux. Unfortunately, linux is not a single item... but a class of systems. I would really like to see an OpenGL native client. Maybe if CCP open sourced the client, someone would help :).

Hey, it could be worse. Look on the bright side, at least he didn't have to download the program 3 times and format his drive twice! :-)
Thanks for your efforts to get a (more) native client for us non-MSers.

Edited by: Kernel Sander on 05/11/2007 20:14:14 First: Thank you CCP for the OSX client!
Second, I have a question that is completely baffling me. It appears as though Trinity 2 is not about to be released with the tuesday update. I was under the impression that OSX/Linux were going to get the Trinity 2 client.
So... one of four things is happening and after following the forums and the dev blogs and the release notes I am thoroughly confused and cannot figure out which one is correct:
[1] Tonight's downtime will be followed by a client update, at which point everyone will be using the Trinity 2 client. Which means the client currently on my laptop is Trinity 2.
[2] CCP is porting both the current client *and* the Trinity 2 client to OSX/Linux. The client currently on my laptop is T1.
[3] CCP ported the T1 client, and they are simply going to extend support of that client so that we can keep playing the game on OSX/Linux after T2 becomes active on Windows. The client currently on my laptop is T1.
or [4] OSX/Linux are getting the T2 upgrade since we're locked out of the brand-new-swoopy-art anyhow, and the Windows T2 upgrade will happen at a later time. The client currently on my laptop is T2.
Can someone straighten me out as to what is actually going on?
Oh, and since it's now considered gauche not to post system specs:

The OSX and Linux clients are the client that Eve has now (basically) so you won't get new ship models until TransGaming/CCP release it. The patch tomorrow is just for bug fixes and adding support for these clients, read the patchnotes. Trinity 2 will come out at the end of November, beginning of December (tm).

Sorry, that's not exactly what I am wondering.
Trinity 2 is a ground-up rewrite, correct? Or close enough to it? Tons of formerly python-handled graphics and game-logic code implemented in sweet, sweet C++?
If this is "the client that Eve has now (basically)," then that begs the question: did CCP port the entire Trinity 1 engine just so OSX and Linux could have a client for 3 solid weeks, before they upgrade us all to Trinity 2 which was also ported the Transgaming?
The only other options are:
- OSX/Linux are using the Trinity 2 client right now, and Windows will get that client at a later date;
- Only the Trinity 1 engine was ported to OSX/Linux, and the T1 engine will be supported after the big Reveleations n.n update which introduces T2 to Windows users only.
I'm just wondering which of these possibilities is correct.

Let me get this straight and be sure I am reading everything correctly in all the threads. As of Tuesday, we will be able to play Classic EVE with this product, however, in order to utilize the graphics updates coming with Trinity, we will still need to use Windows until sometime next year. Is this correct?

EVE will run on Mac and LINUX officially.
All i can say. You are great CCP.
Look forward in developing native support on this platforms and i think you win a lot new players of doing this step.
It is time for game developers to show, that it is worth to win the hearts of a free open OS like LINUX and also other OS Platforms.
I wish you less bugs and problems in implementation.
The community i wish patience, for doing the first steps and keep in mind when it runs once, it runs well .

They ported nothing. The Mac and Linux clients are the same executable as the Windows client, with a Cedega/Cider wrapper. Nothing more, nothing less.
EDIT: Oh, and I'm sure I remember a dev blog about how Trinity 2 will only be available for Windows, while anyone with a decent OS will have the re-badged current Trinity Classic engine.

Running in limited Windows API on top of linux is actually worse then running a native client. I would prefer native client, but I can make due with windows api mess and all its problems. At least for some time. For those how are interested, I have this wine version installed, [ebuild R ] app-emulation/wine-0.9.39
But I don't know if it helps running EVE Online, but I have been able to run EVE online without many issues in the test I did do. As limited they where. ---- Sign has been stolen by ugly dwarf from a unknown solar system. |

We will be supporting Linux and Mac on the Classic client immediately and Transgaminag are working on added the needed Shader Model 3 functions to their product to get full support into place. We will be discussion the time lines on this support this week. It IS coming but not immediately (we are targeting early next year but will have more details later this week).

Just 2 questions.
Are you required to pay Cedega's 5 USD monthly fee if you want to play the officially supported EvE linux version?
Are you hindering EvE from working under Wine so we _have_ to use Cedega?
