Seriously CCP how the hell did this get through QA. Your QA director needs a serious kicking. I have worked in IT development/design for 20+ years and this is perhaps the worst thing I have ever seen.
Luckily I managed to fix this myself without knowing about the forum posts and thanks to a guy at work for lending my an XP install disk so I could get into the recovery console.
You have just caused me to lose 2hrs of work time to fix my work laptop!
I almost resorted to a format/rebuild of the PC and a call out to the Dell support service. Then I would have been really annoyed to find this post!

If you can boot your computer it's not a problem. I personnally don't have boot.ini on some of my computers. I don't know why, but it never get created when I install windows.

Why are you sorry? There's absolutely no reason to be an apologist in this case. They screwed up and deployed something which should have been caught during QA. I'm glad it's getting attention. Hopefully they'll be a bit more thorough next time.

I say let's strike for one month of EvE subscription . We all have skills that need about a month to finish . Let's put them and enjoy one month free from EvE and we will save 15$
You will see how fast they will reimburse at least one month for this screw up when they feel how theirs money is going away ( and this isn't the first screw up ) .
Only thing that man can understand is money , let's take their money away from them

Most likely, this file will contain the correct path to your windows installation somewhere there, and will be found by checking it using the msconfig tool.
ok renamed it boot.ini put in root c:\ yet msconfig still does not give me the boot.ini tab
I am running window xp sp 2

ostensibly, the same thing that happened when you booted after that restore point was made.
I'd insert a fitting saying here, but you know how they all go: "don't fix what ain't broke" vs "better safe than sorry", "look before you leap" vs "we'll cross that bridge when we get there", etc etc
personally I'd rebuild boot.ini, but that's just me. at worst, your computer will default back to c:\windows anyway (which is what I presume it has been doing). I don't have an EULA on me though, so having no personal experience with booting without a boot.ini file I don't want to give you a concrete answer

- Start notepad (from accessories)
- Open the file C:\boot.ini
- If this file is not empty, then STOP!
- If you have Windows XP Pro, type:
[boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
else, if you have Windows XP Home, type:
[boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home" /fastdetect
- If your OS partition (C Drive) is not the first disk, first parttion, then adjust the disk, rdisk, partition accordingly (see end of post)
- Save that as C:\boot.ini
- Change the properties of this file (right-click and select properties) and set 'read-only' and 'hidden' (may net be necessary, but I like to keep it read-only and hidden)
- Run the command (Start Menu->Run) msconfig
- Switch to the BOOT.INI tab, and click the button 'Check All Boot Paths'. If this works, you should be able to reboot safely.
I was concerned about RAID, however, I believe that the RAID driver is loaded prior to this BOOT.INI being read, and that the RAID array will be viewed as a logical device. I run RAID-0 Raptors, and this solution works for me.
If you don't know which version of windows you are running:
- Open the start menu
- Right-click My Computer
- Select Properties and the screen that comes should say in plain English.
If you don't know your partition, then best way to make sure you select the right drive in XP is to start diskmgmt.msc and see which partition is your 'C' drive.
- Type in diskmgmt.msc <enter>
- A new window titled 'Disk Management' and see which drive/partition it is under. Most likely, this is the first disk, first partition or multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1) in MSFT speak. If it is the second partition, then put '2'. This is a 1 based count (perhaps because the MBR is 0?)
This Worked beautifully for me. Thanks, Tiberius Xavier

I told CCP several months ago about this boot.ini problem when I was affected by the REV II patch. There first reply was to tell me it was impossible and that they had never had this problem even after extensive testing and the second reply hinted that I was a liar. After having to re-install windows TWICE (it deleted my boot.ini when I patched up EVE and when I un-installed EVE) Thankfully, I had a new boot.ini floppy waiting for that very reason, surprise surprise I HAD to use it for this patch. Now ive un-installed EVE, reloaded my boot.ini and installed the full Eve client to try to be safe. Ive rebooted my comp and its booted OK. TBH, I dont know how EVe is going to compensate anyone unless its by some free subs. Lets see if they do even though their EULA means they dont have to. A gesture of goodwill perhaps on CCP's part? BTW, the new graphics look great (well, my sansha cruiser is the only thing ive looked at so far, and that was in the station) BUT I would rather have a game bug free than new content anyday. When the game works right THEN its the time for new content, not the other way round. Good luck all.

Got hit too - nice work ;)
Now the bad news: 1. There was a short testing period on SiSi. 2. Everyone with W2K/XP and EvE on C:\ was affected, so was I 3. Yesterday midnight I was finally able to reconstruct the boot.ini while alerting two CERTs.
- Why did you rush the release? - @CCP: Why not comply to a more thorough testing schedule?
Took 2 days of investigation, which is not fun at all. Also I missed the point on why this could happen! __

Pretty lame that the anti virus didn't think that some 3rd party application deleting boot.ini was a problem ._.

While I have a lot of sympathy for people who have been bitten by this bug, there are a few things I would say to the more strident complainers:
1. If you don't know enough about computers to recover from problems like this after they happen, you should have followed the instructions at install to create a rescue diskette/CD 2. If you know enough about computers to be using RAID (presumably RAID 1) then you should know that such a setup is always vulnerable to boot failure issues and have an alternative means to boot the system (personally I would never boot from RAID) 3. Yes, this was a major testing failure and yes it was dumb to have a file called boot.ini (eveboot.ini would be perfectly acceptable) but why not scream at microsoft for producing an OS where an application level installer can delete a critical system file. 4. Windows is an extremely easily damaged OS. If you want to game and work on the same machine you need to take precautions. The first and most obvious thing is to have a separate OS-specific partition which you can regularly image and restore in a matter of minutes (software like Acronis Disk Image will do this for you - there are a number of alternatives). If you do this, you could recover from the loss of a boot image with a few keystrokes - as it happens, if you had this setup you wouldn't have lost boot.ini in the first place.
Like I said, I am sympathetic but I'm afraid that computers are not failsafe consumer-grade devices like CD players. They are complicated and vulnerable systems but you can shield yourself from most problems with a minimum of forethought and a few basic precautions. If you are not willing to take these precautions then you must bear a significant portion of the blame for the ensuing problems.
And no, I'm not being elitist I'm being realistic. If you don't know how to protect your system find someone to help you. Generally there will be a friend or workmate with sufficient knowledge but if not pay someone - it will be worthwhile in the long run.
Now you can all flame me. |

Nice... when I get home from work I need to put some time in fixing my comp then.
But mistakes happen, I don't blame you very much (I laugh at ya though! n00bs! How did you ever let this slip through the testing cycle? Did they never reboot their computer after a test? ) ----------------- Destiny is not a matter of chance. It is a matter of choice. It's not a thing to be waited for - it is a thing to be achieved. |

I reported this with REV II (along with no boot.ini) and they said it was impossible.....
DO NOT turn off your comp, DO NOT un-install windows until you have made sure that you have a boot.ini in the root directory (just go start, rub, type MSCONFIG, look at boot path). IKf you dont have one follow previous instrctions. Have a XP disc handy just in case.

Incredibly, CCP F'kd up again, and this time it's royal ^^
Seriously, how many times before have not the patches had minor glitches.. you SERIOUSLY need to do testing a bit more serious, or hire a third party to do it for you..
this is sad, this is what makes me worried every time i login if CCP has the slightest clue what they are doing sometimes.

Update: I'm using Boot Camp for Mac, so i'll have to reinstall windows eventually. Now before i do that, i want you guys at ccp to know that you really screwed this up. BADLY. Lot of people lost data and your warning, although somewhat effective, came to late for many people.
Now that slogan of yours: Aiming towards the impossible, is that the fact that you screwed one HUGE file, as NO PRODUCER ever done so ? Because it's pretty impossible to get one command line to delete the boot.ini in our main partition.
I really hope you're going to reimburse people for their losses. Lucky for me that i have all my important work on my mac os. If you continue like this, no one will ever want to get to ambulation. Who knows maybe you'll even erase whole partitions in the next major patch. -----------------Signature-------------------------

System restore worked perfectly for me (Thankfully there was one created day before yesterday) and I deleted the EVE client, now I'm downloading the Full Premium from your site just to be safe.
