If you have System Restore active, you will have a backup of your old boot.ini. I just restored my old boot.ini succesfully.
System Restore saves the restore points to a hidden directory called "\System Volume Information". Do this:
1. Give yourself full rights to this directory 2. Open the 2nd newest restore point directory 3. Find a randomly named .ini file that contains string "multi(" - I used grep, you can use your favorite text search tool 4. Examine the file you found and make sure it's your boot.ini 5. Copy-paste the contents to your boot.ini - use system properties - startup settings - edit boot.ini to do that easily 6. Reverse step 1

It will, but it isn't necessary. There are slightly more complicated things which don't result in you losing data.
All that was deleted was one tiny <10 line text file which happened to be essential to the windows boot process. It's not very unique - there are instructions on how to create a new one in this thread. You just need to find a way to create a new one, either by booting into some sort of windows recovery mode, or DOS or linux, or taking the disk out and putting the file on while it's connected to another computer.

Now that slogan of yours: Aiming towards the impossible, is that the fact that you screwed one HUGE file, as NO PRODUCER ever done so ? Because it's pretty impossible to get one command line to delete the boot.ini in our main partition.
I really hope you're going to reimburse people for their losses. Lucky for me that i have all my important work on my mac os. If you continue like this, no one will ever want to get to ambulation. Who knows maybe you'll even erase whole partitions in the next major patch.
Can't you load a Windows XP ISO in to a virtual drive for the virtualization environment?

Now, this is exactly what happened to me:
- download shiny new patch, play eve - download shiny new graphics upgrade, restart eve - realize my comp is too slow to use shiny new content, disable it, and restart eve - try to launch second eve process (who doesn't dual-box? it worked fine before patch!) - computer locks up instantly, screen has fuzzy lines and nothing responds (ctrl-alt-delete and ctrl-shift-esc do nothing) - hit poweroff button. wait usual few seconds. hit power on button.
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above file."
Lots of cursing, frantic calls to my coworkers to tell them that my PC just died, and 4 hours of figuring this out on my own. Mind you my boot.ini file was NOT deleted, and in addition to 'fixboot' I also had to hunt down the place where windows stores backup copies of such files as hal.dll (copy C:\i386\hal.dll C:\windows\system32\hal.dll). By the time I did figure it out, I was too tired to play and considered myself triumphant over the angry PC gods and went to sleep. I'm thankful that I have the wherewithal to solve this, and very ****ed that I lost hours of WORK because I use my computer for more things than just Eve. I have the utmost sympathy for anyone who isn't going to be able to solve this on their own, maybe has only one computer in the house, and is now completely F**KED and must pay someone else to fix their PC. IMO, they will have every right to sue CCP for this.
As someone who has worked in software development for the past 8 years, I can not fathom how this could have been missed. As much as I love the game, this is so serious of a failure that I am disgusted and may boycott CCP if they do not do something to make serious amends to those everyone in the community who was affected by this.

- If your OS partition (C Drive) is not the first disk, first parttion, then adjust the disk, rdisk, partition accordingly (see end of post)
- Save that as C:\boot.ini
- Change the properties of this file (right-click and select properties) and set 'read-only' and 'hidden' (may net be necessary, but I like to keep it read-only and hidden)
- Run the command (Start Menu->Run) msconfig
- Switch to the BOOT.INI tab, and click the button 'Check All Boot Paths'. If this works, you should be able to reboot safely.
I was concerned about RAID, however, I believe that the RAID driver is loaded prior to this BOOT.INI being read, and that the RAID array will be viewed as a logical device. I run RAID-0 Raptors, and this solution works for me.
If you don't know which version of windows you are running:
- Open the start menu
- Right-click My Computer
- Select Properties and the screen that comes should say in plain English.
If you don't know your partition, then best way to make sure you select the right drive in XP is to start diskmgmt.msc and see which partition is your 'C' drive.
- Type in diskmgmt.msc <enter>
- A new window titled 'Disk Management' and see which drive/partition it is under. Most likely, this is the first disk, first partition or multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1) in MSFT speak. If it is the second partition, then put '2'. This is a 1 based count (perhaps because the MBR is 0?)
This Worked beautifully for me. Thanks, Tiberius Xavier
----
Unfortunately this is a bs advice. Why? 1. Many PCs are shipped with a system installation, which is on partition(1), resulting in Windows being on Partition 2 or higher or maybe even on another disk. 2. Depending on machine setup partition and disk order is messed up anyway. 3. Several dual boot systems are ***** anyway.
There are only 3 reliable ways to fix this if you rebooted with missing boot.ini:
Version 1 (advanced): 1. Start Windows XP setup from disk 2. Enter Repair mode 3. Login as Administrator 4. Enter "Fixboot" on prompt
Version 2 (basic): 1. Start Windows XP setup from disk 2. Enter Install Windows XP 3. Choose "Recover selected installation" 4. Follow the instructions on a 30 - 60 minute installation party (which also messes up some hardware drivers and requires a lot of patching afterwards)
Version 3 (pro): 1. Determine your correct disk with ERD or by looking at Windows XP setup at correct disk/partition or determine your system setting with eg. a Linux partition or... (mix of CD/DVD based boot systems or similar) 2. Write a new boot.ini from scratch up.
Just posting a basic boot.ini wont solve the issue for most ppl. Also Id expect CCP to not post some half-messed up info but a correct patch, which would require in this case the posting of eg. a floppy and an ISO image for a CCP-made fix. A CCP phone number to field a request for such a CD sent to each customer asking for it wouldnt hurt either. You messed it up - you have to fix it. Consequently. __

I'm not ' computer guy ' I just play games and have fun so I not up to speed on maintenance so I guess from some peeps answers here I deserve this....
Now I need to get my laptop working and I could do with a little help tbh.
I ' think ' I have my Windows disks somewhere, but if not :
1) Am I screwed? how can I fix this?
2) have I lost everything on my HD?
Any tips or directions would be really great.
Thanks.
if you don't have your windows disks on you, borrow them from a friend/co-worker. I doubt you have a floppy drive on your laptop, so you might also want to look into creating bootable CDs (try googling it). regardless, if you can get your hands on an XP disc, you can enter the recovery console (check the news item for instructions).
you most definitely have not lost the files on your HD yet, and at absolute worst simply buying a new copy of windows xp would solve your problem.

I know its a bit late but hopefully this will help some people. For those of you contemplating a re-install and subsequent loss of data, you can do a windows install without wiping the disk.
Don't select format the partition during install (windows may also offer you an upgrade install if it finds the existing OS installation). This re-installs over the existing setup, and will even pick up a lot of your installed apps/utilities saving you time.

You don't, however, need to do a windows reinstall.

Edited by: Wimwyn on 06/12/2007 12:37:53 I am at work so have time to read this thread (sad git I am)
Some people call this problem "a bug" - if this was written by some spotty faced 14 year old it would have been called "a virus" come to think of it a spotty faced 14 year old could do a better job .
This is not a "bug" it is shame faced careless behavoiur and treating fee paying customers with total contempt. It means bugger all in the great scheme of things but I for one am seriously thinking that this is the last time CCP get my cash.
I have played online games for over 15 years and this is the worst example I have seen of blantant carelessness. I have had servers die for weeks, I have had patches that dont work, I have had patches that make me loose items, I have had patches delayed for over 6 months - I have never ever had a patch that could totally destroy the abilty to use my machine. At work we have more firewalls and protocols than you can poke a stick at and I dont work with highly confidential material - why? to stop crap like this happening. I have searched around and cant even find an apology from anybody in CCP (well anybody in CCP high enough to have some level of real responsibilty).
Words fail me, anybody who knows me faints.
I dont want compensation I want HEADS - I want to know that I am paying money to a competent provider who cares about me its customer.

Hey FHPhantom, some advice.
System Restore works, at least 10 people have said it in the past two pages.
All caps won't get you an answer faster.
Swearing won't get you an answer faster.
Grammar, however, will get you an answer faster.

System restore *should* fix it, but please keep in mind that CCP didn't program the system restore function and can't awnser that question in theory.
If you want to be certain about that contact Microsoft (which will then proceed to laugh in your face and tell you to pay 50 dollars per support question). --- -The only real drug problem is scoring real good drugs |

Originally by: CCP Mindstar Another option we have put together which should be quite simple for users who find their boot.ini to be missing (and have not yet rebooted) is the following:
Download: Windows XP (http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/boot/winxpboot.ini)( also windows 2000 installed in a folder named "Windows" ) OR Windows 2000 (http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/boot/win2kboot.ini)
+ Copy it into the root directory of your Windows drive (eg. C:\) + Rename it to "boot.ini" + Go to start, then Run and type in "msconfig" + Click on the "boot.ini" tab, and select "Check all boot paths" + There will be a series of popups for the invalid installation paths in the above files (14 if all goes to plan), and the correct settings will be placed in your boot.ini.
Most likely, this file will contain the correct path to your windows installation somewhere there, and will be found by checking it using the msconfig tool.
ok renamed it boot.ini put in root c:\ yet msconfig still does not give me the boot.ini tab
I am running window xp sp 2

Because CCP has a "boot.ini" in the root of their install folder. The installer programmer almost certainly intended to delete boot.ini but instead deleted \boot.ini
It's a silly mistake, and easy to make (especially when pressured by 200,000 users who want to get back to their Veld roids as quickly as possible, despite the fact that you're changing a great deal of the programming of the world's largest gaming supercomputer), but still, obviously, quite deadly.

A system restore has worked for other users, however it may not be necessary to go to that length. As stated in the original post of this thread there are numerous knowledgebase articles and ways you can fix the single file (boot.ini) that is causing the issue. -- The cake is a lie! |

So as many people I also got this but at first I thought it was my overclocking that was messing it up so I restored it to default which apparently forced windows to create a new boot.ini.
My question is now that I have a boot.ini, is it fine? Can I re-clock it? Can I play Eve Fine?
