As I type this, I'm logged in and chatting away in eve from, shock horror, linux :)
Major pain to get it to work, but for those who are intrested... grab the pthreaded cvs version of winex. Install eve using winex then edit the eve prefs.ini file and set the alphagain to 1 and full screen to 0 and widescreen to 0. When you then run eve.exe with cvswine it will load as a flat white screen. You have to know where to click on the user/pass word boxes to login, but once you've done that everything works :)
Well, ok so still a few probs, ie can't get the mouse cursor to show :( and the window borders are white (including menu). but it does mean you can login and chat while your busy doing things in linux.. and if your needed always reboot to windows to help out :)
Over time the suport should get better as well, so long as ccp don't use too many more of the directx 9 options :(

btw if anyone finds out why the login screen is flat white and can solve that problem give me a shout as that will probably be why the main windows when playing are white.. If we can resolve that then I can play eve in linux properly, rather than just training skills/chatting :)

I would LOVE to see a CCP released EVE client for Linux. It's what the servers run on from what I understand, I would think it would be a natural extension of that development. ------------------------------------- // The views expressed by this poster are not the views of the poster's corporation, alliance, planet or television network... but they should be. |

Actually, the servers run windows.

I'd rather them go for a variety of unix systems, or do it so that it would be easy to port to other unixes, that way they could tap into that mac user base... I have a mac, and only just built my pc, and whilst owning that mac, I know I would jump at the opportunity to play a mmorpg, so they should be able to get quite a few players from doing that...

atm I'm just using it to log in and chat etc while doing other stuff. Only reason I have windows installed is eve and cod, everything else I do in linux. I wouldn't dare to mine/pvp with it running in linux atm though, not until the directx 9 support improves.
Still at least its possible to keep an eye on whats happening whilst working :)

The servers and clients are totally different. If they server even ran on a unix platform, that doesn't mean it's easy to port the client to unix.
The more and more we use DX9, the less and less you will see unix clients.
If you want to bother someone about it. Bother the WineX dev team to make the directX9 implimentation perfect.
It comes down to the old argument: Why spend money, time, effort, resources on developing AND maintaining a client for ~1% of the user base. It doesn't make sense really.
Your best bet is to bug wineX or join thier mail list and contribute somehow. ---------------------------------------

Jolo, yes 1% is not much and I would like to see a vote for that so that ccp could see how many people would like it and if we get 20-30% we would defnitly have a better chance.
And yes they should think about a Mac version too, since not many mmorpg`s are out for it and i think 1-2k more users would be possible for them.
So maybe CCP should think of a vote for Linux and Mac and see how many players would like to have it.
And they only need to make a nativ unix version which will run under every Distri wihtout big problems

There are many problems with supporting other formats.
*You have to hire new customer service representatives and TRAIN THEM to understand how to support mac/unix versions.
*Linux has at least 10 major (and 100+ minor) distro's. You would have to TRAIN staff to support EVERY one. Also, you'd have to train them how to handle problems with linux installs. Because a lot of people who use linux, SHOULDNT be using it and don't know what's really going on. The tech support would have to know how to fix peoples gtk installs, or all that junk.
It would be a disaster for CCP to try and attempt a UNIX client now. That's just my 2 bits.
It would be fesasble if they hired a third party developer to do it who has the C.S. infrastructure to handle the unix questions and developers who can do DX9 stuff. Same goes for MAC.
Anyway. I have using unix for almost 10 years.
But i'd never want a unix game client. Unix is for the server land. I'm still waiting to be impressed by a desktop unix. ---------------------------------------

Off-topic, but, you haven't liked ANY of the window managers/desktop thingies? I quite liked KDE when I was running freeBSD.
As for the customer support, then ccp could simply just support one flavour of linux and mac OSX (because, I find, OSX is the most user-friendly OS out there, you wouldn't really need to do much customer-service training), allow customers to run it under other OSes, but explain that they are not supported.
Also, it would benefit ccp in ways other than a larger player-base, it would greatly improve their reputation, people respect companies that support unixes, and there is a rather large hardcore mac fraternity who won't stop banging on about it (a good mmorpg would be their first line of defence when it comes down to the old 'macs have no games' argument). Basically, it provides good publicity for the company, alot of people see microsoft as evil, any company that supports non-microsoft oses often gets similiar recognition to eco-friendly companies, in the eyes of many geeks, anyway.

As much as I would like it, it's just not realistic. you'd have to port all of the DX9 stuff to opengl equivalent, port network code, threading, etc. Then you have sound drivers, do you wanna go oss or alsa.
Better to fix current bugs and add more stuff in Windows version, then to worry about linux one, IMHO --

This is VERY good news - I'll install gentoo asap (not today, busy with other stuff ) and try to fix the remaining problems if possible
My linux install is kind of broken atm (hardware upgrades, windows reinstalls wiping the bootsector and so on), otherwise I'd tried the cvs version of winex some time ago...
Off topic : Linux desktop stuff has come a long way. No desktop manager is perfect, and some ppl shouldn't use linux - but on the other hand, many ppl shouldn't use Windows either. There are not really that many ppl using linux that can't handle it (afaik).

I don't think its worth ccp looking into supporting linux really, since the devs already have the on-going task of improving the client and adding new features. IT would require a seperate team to handle porting, and that would be an additional cost, which considering those of us who would like to see a linux client already play under windows, is just not economical.
Although I'd love to see a linux client, its probably a way too much work to port the code over. However, support isn't really an issue, you'd just do what other game companies do. Provide an unsupported version for linux :)
I think in the long run we will have to wait for transgaming to improve their directx support, until then I wouldn't recommend undocking in linux :P
On another note, ut2004 is out and has a native linux installer included :)
Who knows though, 3 to 4 years down the line when eve2 comes out :) Maybe they'll include seperate clients with native support for windows, mac and linux.

Yes, id love to get that prefs.ini and config too.
I cant get it to run, it alwasy crashes either on the character creation screen, or - after i created a character on windows - the screen, where you can select the character after loggin in.
loggin in is pretty easy btw:
1. set username in prefs.ini 2. wait for the white screen 3. click into the white like 2 or 3 times 4. press enter twice - now an error comparing about password should appear - 5. press enter again. 6. enter password 7. press enter again
and there you go .... on my machine it crashes just the moment i want to click on the character.
anybody resolved this?

supporting multiple clients wouldn't be needed if they'd used open systems platforms to start with.. any software developer that these days uses OS dependant technologies are twits.
a linux client isn't nearly as important to me as an OSX one.. I way perher to use my mac then a stinking PC.
The person saying linux would be hard to support because the the different distros obviously doesn't understand what distro's really are, linux kernel + user space apps.. they don't change the technology any.
If CCP did a poll i think they'd be supprised at the demand on other platforms.. and did you ever stop to think that the ~1% figure is only of the current userbase, obviously there are people without multiple machines using OSX that don't have a choice of playing..
I would be very tempted to move to games that support my platform for no other reason then that they actually do support it.
as for training staff hogswash, they don't support the client they've got.. that logic doesn't even come into play.. I'm yet to see someone that actaully works for ccp.

Edited by: Trianon Starstealer on 18/05/2004 00:26:02 I would guess that it's a framebuffer issue, but it's been a long time since I've done any graphics programming in Linux so I could be wrong. Try a different window manager, I've found some handle graphics slightly better than others.
As for those that ridicule Linux Graphics and sound......... you probably pulled an MSCE Cert off the toilet roll in the local public lav and now consider yourself an expert. If you knew what you were talking about you would know why X is a far superior and far more flexible windowing system.... as for sound..... Audigy XGamer sounds stunning in every game I've played.... there is little or no difference between the sound quality on Linux and that on Windows.

I am just pointing out that the Linux driver library is lagging. Not all vendors support Linux and that does not make it bad but allot more work.

I'm all for multi-platform clients. Infact, my primary OS at home and my preffered OS for most tasks is FreeBSD. My favorite OS, however, is the one that's right for the job. Argue with that!
The real problem in going forward with a viable multi-platform game client is the lack of a decent graphics API. OpenGL filled the role for a long time, but the world has really passed it by. It simply can't handle the lighting and shading features today's gamers demand. Even Id Software (John Carmack), a long time OpenGL devotee has recognized this. The engine for Doom III will be an OpenGL/DirectX-9 hybrid in order to achieve the desired effect.
If your time is so useless, that you wanna waste it trying to get DirectX working under Wine, then go for it. My freetime is in short supply and valuable, therefore I'd rather spend it playing EVE on a stable platform, and by your own admission, EVE under Wine is far from stable.
I want to add that since the game has gone retail, I've had exactly *ONE* CTD on my XP box. The stability of any platform really has more to do with the skill of the person administering the box than the avocacy ji!had that its owner is on.

There is a company that makes MacOS, Linux, PS2, Xbox, etc ports of popular games. Maybe trying to bug that company to make a port for EVE would have more succes then bugging WineX to implement DX9 (btw, isn't WineX something you have to pay for?).
Or go work at CCP and help them port the game to Linux/MacOS themself.

Indeed there is a company. Loki Games or something like that. Check out www.lokigames.com I got my Quake 3 from them (looooong time ago) and it works pretty good. Though Quake 3 already does use OpenGL... However I doubt that they will create an EVE port when the client is constantly being updated through patches and so forth.

I only had to turn off advancedDevice=1 in my prefs.ini because EVE crashed when I undocked with that setting turned on.
I still haven't been able to get rid of the white menus though :( That would make EVE instantly playable on Linux for me.

(My comment to the l33tness of running *nix or win, imho same **** diffrent name, but some things are easier to do in *nix and some thing are better in win enviroment, if i wanna run eg network testing enviroments or not invest 10000000 $ on a database test setup might use *nix code is open so programming makes it alot easier) anyway my 200ú It¦s summer grab that beer get out in the sun with family and friends i promise EVE will still be here in 1 month ;0)

back to the topic
can someone who got it running pls post something about their config(kernel version, nvidia/ati gpu, prepackaged cedega/cvs compile, point2play/command line, cedega config, pref.ini, did u use the eve client installed in ur "real" windows partition/install in the "fake" cedega c-drive)
thanx in advance
ps: mine is still crashing before i get to the login screen, shows the startup image, the eula screen doesn't come up(kernel 2.6.7, radeon9800pro/driver version 3.9, prepacked cedega, not using point2play coz starting it with point2play it even doesn't show the startup pic, installed a new client in the "fake" c-drive)

Righto, here we go: Kernel 2.4.20, NVIDIA FX5700, prepackaged Cedega 4.0, commandline, copied the EVE install from my Windows partition to my Transgaming_drive.

i can fully understand that there will be no native linux eve client, it's sort of impossible after choosing direct3d to render the graphics
but would it be possible to contact transgaming and support em to get it running using cedega? or at least to support us who are working on it by giving us documentation of all graphics related prefs.ini options?

Hey,
When i run the client, (which i installed and patched from cd) i get the splash screen, the the client window opens, but the splash screen never disappears and the window is grey (not white). Bit confused at whats going on. The first message i always get is 'import site' failed; use -v for traceback Any idea what that means?

Hey Cortex why gotta be such a ***** about this ? You obviously have no interest in this thread other to insult people who like linux and would really like to play thier games under that os. If those people want to spend thier time experimenting with these things then let them. You learn far more about computers this way. Bottom line is if you got nothing constructive to add dont be a loser and insult for no reason.

no love with kernel 2.6.7 x.org ati 3.9.0 and cedega or current cvs, I suspect it's due to the ati drivers tho with the previous version I could atleast get the pure white login screen.

that might be the reason i'm asking ccp to release documentation, not transgaming ;)
site.py is a file used for local "site" python config which is imported using an "import site" command. i think this error message isn't related to our problems, but that's only my 0.02 isk
any dev available to comment on the possibility of releasing documentation for prefs.ini option?
eve was running very well using winex during beta(before the d3d9 effects were introduced) btw so most important would be any options to disable some of those effects.

Originally by: KIAHicks btw if anyone finds out why the login screen is flat white and can solve that problem give me a shout as that will probably be why the main windows when playing are white.. If we can resolve that then I can play eve in linux properly, rather than just training skills/chatting :)
I can confirm that the flat white login screen is caused by the graphics driver NOT winex. I have run eve on my server board which has a pathetic for gaming, acceptable for server... trident cyberblade, with white login screen. Therefore i would consider the problem to be driver related.

I don't think the problem is purely driver related. I'm running Fedora Core 2, on an AMD64 (32bit version of Fedora) with 1024MB of ram, and a Geforce FX5700 256MB (128bit memory bus). I'm using the latest nVidia drivers that were released a few days ago (61.06 x86-linux). I was running the 2.6.7 kernel stock, but I switched over to a stock fedora kernel for testing. My kernel version is 2.6.6-1.435.2.3.
To get cedega to work correctly on fedora I first had to disable prelinking in /etc/sysconfig/prelink and run the cron.daily prelink job. Then I had to disable the exec-shield kernel option in /proc/sys/kernel/exec-shield and /proc/sys/kernel/exec-shield-randomize.
After all that cedega installed eve just fine. Before that though I was getting an error 21 from cedega 4.
So long story short, my config is fine, but I get a white screen when I first start it up as well as the site.py error. I think the white screen is more of a start up problem. I'm going to try copying my stock windows install to this system later and see what happens. I'll just have to zip it up and burn it on dvd or something. I think this will work, it's just that there's something missing when you just do a clean install from the downloadable copy of EVE.
I'll keep trying... If I can get this to work I'll write up a howto and put up a web page about it.

Great Work KIA!! Maybe if EVE was running on Linux vs Windows, you wouldn't get all the memory leaks that you even encounter from sitting in a station and doing nothing to PVPing, etc. I would definately pay for a version of EVE for LINUX if it ever came available!

I use Linux for every single thing I do except Eve-Online and Battlefield (and have done for years), so I'm a very experienced Linux user, and here's what I think. I know Battlefield works in WineX, but that Eve-Online has quite some way to go. I don't think that this is the responsibility of the CCP team. First we'll have to see them really making money on the Windows version before it'll be practical to even discuss a port to different platforms. If it isn't profitable on Windows, it's not profitable on anything.
Not to mention that since they went with DirectX to begin with, they're not going to switch to OpenGL easily.
However, sponsoring the WineX project gets you on a voting list about what they make compatible first. The more games that use DirectX 9 that will get voted for, the sooner WineX is going to support Eve. Actually, WineX is already quite stunning, it runs an amazing amount of games perfectly, it's only a matter of time before Eve starts to run in WineX.
I think those who want to see games run on Linux in general, oughta pay more attention to WineX and less attention to the game developers themselves. Let Windows be the game platform, if we can have the Windows API anyway, there's no point at all for specific a Linux version from the developers.
Furthermore, WineX supporting Eve instead of Eve supporting WineX (or OpenGL), will also benefit other games that use the same DirectX methods as Eve-Online. Hence, there's a much greater audience interested in the development of WineX than to supporting one specific game. |

This has actually changed in recent days. OpenGL v2.0 was finally released which supports the lighting and shading featues that OpenGL has been lacking.
So I guess a multi-platform re-write of the EVE client is now possible, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

guys, check the Tech forum. The white login screen and subsequent problems is something that WINDOWS users are having. I did as well, with the latest NV drivers for windows. I had to switch to the CCP-recommended driver version, which IIRC is one of the 4xxx. TRy doing that withyour linux NV drivers before messing with anything else.

CCP have enough to do without having to develop Eve on Linux aswell. 1-2% of the desktop really doesn't justify the time nor expense. And we would be sacrificing new features and content in the actual game due to resources being taken.
Please, don't waste any time on this CCP.
So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong and to strike at what is weak. |

Could someone delete all anti-linux and anti-microsoft posts from this thread and this could be good informative thread for these who try get eve run on linux or atleast give these who already made these posts ability to delete these posts themself once they finally reliase how foolish it look like.
Personally its good news if eve is getting closer to work from linux as it means potential new subscribers and these who have windows installed just so they could play eve could finally do full move to their primary OS. I doubt there would be any need to for new customer support like someone hint here just because cedega would run eve and updating client wouldnt become too complex aslong it would run on top of cedega, so same updates would work for both linux and windows and if it didnt work for linux it would would require update to cedega instead changes to client.

I just read that ppl are testing it with Cedega 4.1 right now - still no word from them though :(
Anyhow, I read somewhere that CCP is gonna have a talk with Transgaming within a few weeks (when Shiva is 'finished') to try and get EVE to run in linux. This aint a promise that we'll have EVE in linux by christmas but at least there is progress :)

Hi,
everything works perfectly fine for me:
- i have a perfect mouse - it runs smooth - sounds fine too
except for one problem that makes the game unplayable:
It seems, that the client is unable to add new stuff to the cache?!?! everytime i get to something new the client crashes, if i start the game on a windows machine and copy over the cahe of the particular thing it works. quite anoying (especially for the guy with the windows machine). Ah one more thing: the game crashes when i try to look at a stargate, but that might also be cause by the cache, dunno. flying to it while not looking at it works tho :)))
can anybody help? specs r:
Athlon 2500+ MSI Nvidia fx5900XT with driver ver. 6629(latest so far) cedega 4.2 transgaming binary version(no cvs) all that on at up to date Fedora Core 3 system(kde 3.3) (lots of 3rd party stuff like ATRPMS in it). I use the "prefs.ini" someone postet in this forum earlier.
maybe someone who has most of the stuff in his cache already can upload it and post the link here, so the linux people can play :)
PS: Dont tell me to use windows as i dont have it and cannot install it on the machine.

File permissions? When you mount fat32 or NTFS under linux, the filesystem inherits the permissions of the mount point recursivly.
permissions or ownership could also be the problem if you've copied to game to ext2fs.
'man chmod' 'man chown'

Yes there are some usless stuff running. Like any experienced computer nerd knows, you can configured stuff not to run or to run. So I don't see the problem here in you using that as a insult or something. That's like me saying "Wow Linux has alot of usless daemons running by default" or something. Those flames r just anoying, plz stop it. It doesnt help anybody so jerk off somewhere else.
I noticed that it doesnt seem to runs with the cvsversion generated via the WineX.sh skript. I cant see the login screen nor anything else after loggin in with it. Ill try with cedega 4.1.1 now.
one strange thing is that the game still runs at 1024x768 although its runs as 1280x1024 on a windows machine using the same EVE directory. The games does not produce any registry entry where it saves the resolutions, so it must be in the EVE directory somewhere(i tried 2 windows computers, one of em had never run eve before and still had the higher res) but not interpretet when run though cedega. So there is something generally wrong with the access to the cache. wtf do they do to the files there?!?!? Does cedega access the filesystem in a case sensitive way? I can hardly believe it, but itll be easy to find out.

Actually, UNIX was originally a commercial product by Bell Labs of AT&T. Bell Labs made it freely available to educational institutions for a short time, then terminated this free license. This license termination is what prompted the development of the BSD branch of operations systems. Oh, but wait. . . you already know that 'cause you're a know-it-all linux guy telling us how the world is run.

Could we please keep this conversation focused on the topic at hand and not make this the 9.872.859.227.687.938.987.865th thread for OS wars on the internet!
EVE on other platforms is something we are investigating. EVE running better on CEDEGA is most likely due to the work they have been doing with Half-Life 2 compatibility, so kudos to the Transgaming team
Posting workarounds here helps us pinpoint where additional work is needed to increase compatibility, please keep it up (or link to other threads that have workarounds)

to say Eve is running on linux, when it is being emulated via a third party application, on linux, is the same as me claiming I can run linux on windows when it is actualy in VM-ware...
To run on an OS, the game would have to be ported to work on that OS. If an application is used to get Eve (or any other app) to run 'in' an OS, then emulation is the issue. Ask the creators of the emulator, not CCP for support, since it is their code that caues the problem.

Is Eve ported to Linux? (no) Does the 'tool' run 'in' linux and give the user the ability to run a Windows application within the 'tool' that is running 'in' Linux? (yes)
By definition, that is an emulator.

Cedega how ever does not create this full enviroment, it brings in partial amounts of the windows system that is needed by games in order to run. Ie dx and a few other dll's.The game is still running under the native linux enviroment but once again in terms you can understand it has pointers to the areas of windows that it actually requires. Once again maybe you should go read and learn how things really work before you speak about things you don't have the slightest clue about. Now back to my orginal note as I said before this error I get is also the same exact error many windows users get, once again read the forums. This sounds like something to do with Python, probably not up to date or a version that is not supported. ----------------

If it is not ported to run as a native application, and uses anything to emulate the environment needed, it is an emulator, or at least an emulation tool.
If the application is ported, it is running as a native application.
Emulation is not only about the hardware, it can and is often (gasp) to emulate a software environment (omg). Imagine that...software that creates an environment that an application can run 'in' while using an OS that can not run the application in its native form.
Get out of the Linux zealot ms-hater mode, and face reality. He was correct, you are biased, and the tools used to run any Windows application in Linux are emulation environments. As far as your insulting the guy, that is very immature. Your argument was moot after that (who wants to read childish insults).
From what the DEV's of Eve have posted, they may port the code, and I like that. Linux is a great OS, and Eve would be a great addition to its appeal. Until then, I just run the program under it's native OS. Simple.

Infact, the browsing statistics collected on /. basically prove that the average Linux zealot actually runs Windows with a picture of Tux as their wallpaper.

Your mortal enemy installed gentoo stage 1, and you're jealous aren't you? It's ok man. You forget that it's people like the ones that posted in this forum that got everything in linux to work. People who wanted it to work because they could make it work. The same kind of people that make FreeBSD. If everyone just used the OS that was "right for the job" then we'd all still be running on unix or OS X. (though it would look different I bet if no one ever decided to make a competitive OS). Because those were first, so seeing as everyone would theoretically make software for the right OS for the job those would always be the ones people turned to. Get a life man. This forum is about fixing those problems in Linux us Linux users would appriciate. Sure there are some unrealistic posts about a linux client but we've all managed to ignore those, the least you could do if it bothers you so much is grow up and just skip the troll opporitunity. |

For those of you that have gotten eve to work in linux could you help me out. I need some clues. do you guys find that copying the install from windows works better than useing the install in point2play. btw I'm currently running cedega 4.3 I've heard it's supposed to work best in that. I keep getting errors though when it runs, and I've been clued by one of the devs that "the Python error could possibly be solved be reinstalling the game to a different location using the full client build". It's a python error in blue.dll. Everytime I start the game it pops open a window and then crashs the winex logs aren't helpful but I get this from the eve client
#errors b321 2005.03.15 22.42.14.txt
File created 2005.03.15 22:42:14
1 : blue.BluePyOS: Unhandled Python exception: BluePyOS::PyError() AttributeError: 'stackless.module' object has no attribute '_extension_registry'0 : blue.BluePyOS: InitBasicModuleSupport() failed

People have mentioned this before. Under linux eve seems unable to render cahrshots at all. One solution people cam up with was to make sure you copy your cache over so that all the little piccies are already available. --- "Due to the European lard shortage, we are currently unable to supply this product." |

I've been playing eve with linux since last year. You need Cedega 4.3, which i'm using on Debian unstable, Kernel 2.6.10 with NVidia drivers. It's working well enough for a carebear like me PvP would not be as good as with windows, because eve is 50%-60% slower with linux. I get crashes when i'm near Minmatar gates or stations, but why should i go there anyway... Perhaps when you zoom all the way out it could work, i didn't test that tough.

It's also a challenge. They like to solve hard problems. I have found these very useful employees.

Most security professionals use linux, freebsd, or openbsd in their jobs and on their networks. I use all 3 for specific purposes. Windows is trash for security, but great for gaming.
BTW, UNIX is open source. UNIX variants are the only B-1, B-2 rated OS's under the Orange guidelines. These are used as guards between very secure networks.

Further, NSA choose Linux for SELinux, their secure port with mandatory access control built into the kernel. NSA was forced to give it up by the MS lobby. (Don't even start with the tinfoil hat, all of the code has been audited)

linux is only good for the office/servers. the only good i see with that os, is it uses less resources and will run better on weaker pc's, if you can get software too work with it.

Incorrect. Linux is open source. UNIX is a commercial product.
Similarly, net/free/open/dragonfly BSDs are open source, straight BSD and OS X are both commercial BSD-based products.

Linux has more security problems than Windows.

So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong and to strike at what is weak. |
