So,
Here I am sitting at work discussing the beatuy that is EvE Online. I just received my copy of Tony Gonzales' "Eve - The Empyrean Age" and im thinking about reading the first chapter right now. Either way we got on the topic of what the average age of EvE subscribers is as our player base "at times" appears to be much more mature than our enemys the WoW tards and the Hello Kitty failures (chococat is tehgey..) So. I'd love to see a dev response to an acurate number to this question if possible.....What is the Average Age of EvE Subsribers?
Thank you in Advance,
Jillian....By the way im 22

The last time an average age was stated that I know of, was awhile ago. And I believe that age was 27.
Anyway, I'm not 27.

Nothing will ever be perfect, but this is the best out there.

I would say that the maturity level is largely based on the fact that we dont have silly looking avatars waving our silly swords/guns around while simultaniously casting spells and doing the pelvic thrust emote. Plus EvE is cold, dark and at times really scarry.

31. I doubt CCP has accurate data on the average age of EVE players. It seems to be mostly college age and people in their 20's. BTW, there are plenty of mature and intelligent players in WoW and other MMOs. In fact the majority of players I ran into in WoW were in the 20's, some much older. There are some kiddies running around though, and generally immature players, but you just have to find a good guild. Honestly all this WoW hatred and condescension around here I find off-putting.

I think we all hate WoW primarily because they are Hyper-Mainstream and that there is in comparison so little content in it however your standard Best-Buy nerd is all about it....plus man seriously....What other game can your character fire artilery shells from their body/ship/avatar? lol.

I've yet to meet someone under the age of 16 in-game who has played more than a month. EVE just seems to repel the average minor, especially, its sad to say, the average American minor.(Yes I am an American, and I am simply bringing up an observation about how American kids are different from most of the rest of the world, please don't edit me Mr. Mod ^^ ) EVE is a cold, dark, unforgiving world. The same qualities that make me love the game seem to be like kryptonite to kids. I guess it takes a certain level of maturity to continue to play after your first few hard lessons.
Though this is by no means a bad thing, in my opinion less kids equates to a better community, though certain members of the EVE community, EVE-o especially, tend to still make a colossal arse out of themselves.
BTW I'll be 28 soon enough ^^.

28 here, and Eve is my first MMO after a 5 year hiatus. I played Ultima Online for a total of 2 months before it got too annoying.
I'm here because of the economics and the politics that have evolved thanks to a mostly hands off approach from CCP. None of this hold-your-hand nanny state business you get out of the others.

Yes, the average age of EVE players can be calculated after all players post their ages into this thread. All 200K+ of them...
I suspect though that CCP's numbers have flaws: It's my belief that older people tend to have more accounts, on average, than younger players, and if they fill out their information correctly, this will skew the results upwards.
For example, I'm 37 and have 5 accounts. If CCP counts the average player age, do they count me as 5 37-year olds, or just one?

Good point and that also brings up another stat I've always wanted to know. How many people have multiple accoundts? and how many do they have?

I'm 26. Most of the corps I have flown with have been between 30-50 years old. (Even had one guy who was 72, no joke)
I think the average age around eve is 25-30. Most of the players *seem* to be above average intelligence (at least in real life, as our IQ drops when we log in, nubbins undock already :P), and professionals. (In marketing speak, we're that elusive group of males, yarr CCP hooked and baited us good)
I have seen younger players, though they tend to be the group of people who don't last here very long. As they get shunned for their immaturity.
Im sure if you look at the statistics, the older players have played longer (2002, 2003, 2004) younger players are younger if they last past that 6 month retention. (I have seen very few non-children-of-other-players under 18 that play for very long)
And to answer someone above.. the Anti-WoW thing is elitism. Eve > Wow. Plain and simple. And we dont mind sharing that bit of fact with the rest of the world. -----------------------------------

The average age used to be quite high. It's gradually dropped over time. /start sig I love old characters that post 'I've beeen playing the game four years' when I know their account has been sold on. /end sig |

Single account (missus would go spare if I started running two accounts).
Was briefly on EVE last year when I was working in the US, but decided to wait until I was back in the EU before starting in earnest.
Unfortunately I completely forgot what my account name was and which email address I had used to create it, so I have had to start a completely new account ><
Prior MMO's in chronological order:- SWG (pre-CU), Everquest 2, City of Heroes, World of Warcraft, Tabula Rasa, EVE online.
Had been looking for a sci-fi MMO for a while and EVE seems to supply everything I need in an MMO. Hopefully here to stay.

Edited by: Z3r0n on 25/06/2008 08:04:51 I'm fairly certain that the average age of the eve subscribers was said to be 27. That was in one of the dev blogs at the beginning of this year iirc.
I'm currently pulling the average down from 27... I'm "only" 24.
Btw. In case you care: I'm one of the youngest members of my corp.. there are about 3 or 4 others that are about my age and the rest are 30+ I think. Somehow most people I play with are older then me... But I guess thats mainly due to 18+ recruitment policy.... and luck.

Average of of the EVE subscriber? About seven months.
That's been mentioned in several places.
It's just one of those things I think about, when someone suggests that they'll "never catch up". Past 7 onths, you're over the hump. The rest is up to you.

Ugh, another self loathing American. Honestly ALL MINORS OF ALL NATIONS are going to be idiots. I have met a lot of whiny American minors in another game. However the most annoying, cry baby of them all happened to be British. If I got the choice to punch one of them, it would be him and id damn well make it count.
Chances are your going to run into more American minors in game because...*GASP* your playing in the same time zone as them! All the Euro kiddies have long been in bed or out causing hell for you to notice them.
I hate whiny kids in games. I've met my share of obnoxious ones but I have also met some ,not in eve, that were able to pass for an older player or at least had better manners then some of the euro and aussie teens i have met. Theres always good and bad but to suggest that 1 group has the most is just moronic.
As for me im 28. As for the reason there aren't likely as many American teens in this game is because EVE has zero presence in the game shops. I only heard of this game through a friend in another MMO. If it wasnt for him I would probably be first hearing about Eve during BSG episodes.
The problem with wow is how commercial it is.Just like final fantasy 7 brought out all the wanna be rpg players saying it was the greatest rpg ever created, that same is true with wow. people that have never played an rpg or mmo have been brought into it by wow.Because they have only played wow and never another game on a pc, they think they are true gamers. You have to hear about them babble on about some fairy and sword play as though it was something unique.
FF7 players that thought the series started with part 7 were posers. They caused a flood of boring, ill designed "rpgs" rushed to the market to get a peice of the action. Real gamers were then lumped in with those posers. The same is now true with those in MMOs and the wow players.
Wow itself is just a slicker version of eq2 with gfx that are much more cartoon like. Its nothing new or unique. It somehow got the attention of non gamers. People that never played warcraft got into it somehow. Its all you see at the game shops. Its the warhammer 40k of mmos. BattleTech > 40k but 40k is far more commercial, therefore it must be a better game. Same is true with wow vs any other game out there. its an average game but nothing special. as for the players, i knew some guys trying it and a chick with a hell of a rack and really cute that was a heck of a flirt but half way cross country and in and out of a relationship

I am 35, and have been playing MMO's since 2004, and EVE since 2007. My first MMO was Star Wars Galaxies, back in it's Pre-CU glory days, did the Jedi thing back when it was hard and rewarding, stuck it out through the Combat Downgrade, then eventually gave up as it failure cascaded due to the New Gawdawful Experience.
I love EVE because of both it's complexity and it's hardcore nature, it's the first game since Pre-CU SWG to offer me that.

Actually, I think the skill system is one of the reasons why younger kid don't stay for more than a few months. In wow, you can grind your way to 70 in 3-5 months. In Eve, getting your character to what can be considered "end game" can take three or four years. I think many 12 year olds just dont' have that type of attention span.
3-5 months? I've levelled characters within 3 weeks to 70. And that's not even power-levelling just playing normally.

Takes about 10 days played to get to 70 (and that's still quite fast), so 240 hours in 21 days, I'd say that's not playing 'normally'.

If there is something that we could name "endgame", 3 to 4 years is a bit low in time :)
I'm playing for over 3 years and still have a lot of skills to do .. and that are only combat related skills, i have (very low) no industry skills. I would go for 7 to 10 years ^^ (not to mention that we get new skills sometimes)

I think part of it is the market, most young-uns see that and go "eeeeewww a spreadsheet, like in comp class" and skitter away to WoW or Hello Kitty. The few we are left with tend to be the ones who can actually plan and learn. This is a game that rewards patience.

Yep one of my RL mates said "lol EvE, aint that the game that requires excel to play?" simple response was that if I wanted to achieve the most out of what I had going that extra mile and planning is great. So if i want to win in EvE I plan.
The same mate also tried to say wow pvp was more skillfull because EvE has very little line of sight.

Oh yeah.. that. And the 4 pages of WoW hate suddenly make EVE community to rise to a completely new maturity level.
But of course it's generally known fact that EVE players are more mature, intelligent and generally more successful in life than all the 10 million plebs in WoW. 99% of us are also dashingly good looking and even though majority of us already has one foot in the grave (closing middle ages), we still get the chicks (whenever one of them makes a mistake of logging into our spaceship Internet game). After we put the kids in bed and set up the Sex-and-the-city DVD for the wife, we log on to EVE and type really prfoundly deep and intelligent messages about how CCP is runing the game and just how badly nanos need nerfing.
Oh and let's not forget we've got some serious killing skills.

You are exactly right... The two largest surges in EVE's subscribers happened in 2005, coinciding with the Combat Downgrade in Spring `05 and the New Gamedestroying Experience in Winter `05 started another. When you tell that many people to F'off and die, we aren't doing sandbox anymore as SOE did they naturally will eventually migrate to the closest replacement they can find, which is EVE.
Personally I can't wait for ambulation, because once EVE gets a real ground game I think that finally I will be able to bury the last of my SWG anger :)

OMFG FOR THE LAST GOD DAMNED TIME STOP BLAMING SOE FOR SWG.
All of those changes were mandated by Lucas arts. That means Lucas Art's is responsible for them, not SOE. Doing a little net search will find you 5 or 6 trade publications talking about this.
I honestly cannot believe how totally uninformed former SWG players are. Everywhere I see their anti-SOE rants that are devoid of any factual support.
Sorry for yelling. It just strikes a nerve.

This is my first MMO and besides trying to learn about EVE I've been fascinated by the growth of online gaming as I've observed it over the years and have been curious about demographic info as well. I myself am 26. I imagine the mean is around that number.
I also heard many EVE players are programmers, engineers, IT, and designers? It seems interesting to me that gaming style may correspond with lifestyle and career choices.

I was 17 when I first started playing, and i'm 21 now.
When I started I was sort of technically good at eve... I knew how things worked and what to use when, but somehow I just sucked at practical eve, so I never made any ISK. I pretty much got floated by this ~60 year old corp partriarch (thanks Gurney) who'd occasionally chuck me a few hundred million to stop me complaining about my wallet ----

Was 21 when I tried this game for the first time. I could jump to locations and move the ship but I just didn't know what to do.. Then last year I tried again and found it much easier to get 'into' this game. Right now i'm 24 :)

15 here, and quite mature too. Sure I enjoy shooting stuff and can flipping, but I almost always refund the people I take from, just cause it is the nice thing to do.
I have played SWG, stuck with it cause even though the NGE sucked, it was still pretty good, and some of the good stuff that was there (cities, not being focused around combat) didn't get removed. But after time I went over to WoW because it (believe it or not) was still better than SWG. But I still played SWG, and was on the SWG forums. When one day in the GAT (imagine OOP here) someone mentioned EVE. I got interested and googled EVE, found out about some basic EVE things.
Now me and my IRL friend were comign up with an idea of a perfect mmo. We were thinking of a star wars (sci-fi) game where you were allowed to shoot anyone, anywhere, anytime. But sometimes it would be a bad idea to do so because police woudl come and stop you. Also we had imagined it to be all on one big server. And we imagined that it would be very player run, ultimate sandbox.
Then I found out about EVE, and it nearly matched everything I had hoped for in a good game. So tried out EVE, and loved it. Of coarse I still had a WoW account and a SWG account. SWG started getting a bit better, so I decided to drop WoW completely. When I started EVE SWG just started getting painful to play, so I dropped SWG too. I have been playing EVE for about 5 months, and don't think I will be leaving anytime soon.

I just recently leveled a Paladin into the upper 40s in twelve days. Averaging a level every three to five hours online.
And 34 here.

Perhaps turning this thread into a graph of ages would be a cool thing to do - but from my experience, the majority of pilots I have met over the last 2 years have been around the ages of 16-26. The 2nd largest majority I would put my money on players 26+ years old. OF course, I met pilots of ages outside these ranges before, but probably 2/3 of the time, 16-26 are the ages of players I tend to meet.
And yes, god bless EVE and its players who have some form of a brain capacity. WoW is infested with Nimrods and children - EVE is pretty much, to put it simply, very college level. Can't say that about any other MMO that comes to mind. ____________________

My first MMO ever was EvE, I bought it off the shelf at best buy no knowing it was an MMO (or what an MMO was for that matter). Took a break to play Lineage 2, which sucked then came back. I was a bow and arrow guy in that crappy game but im a Blaster junkie and production whor3 in Eve. Dont really see the relation but there you go.

Originally by: MidnightMatriarch I've yet to meet someone under the age of 16 in-game who has played more than a month.

Just hit 29. Joined Eve earlier this month though, and I really wish I had done so earlier (so far it looks like everything I want from an mmo). Previous mmos include Anarchy Online, Jumpgate (the little older brother of Eve), A Tale in the Desert (weird mmo), World of Warcraft (had been waiting for that one since I heard about it, being a big fan of all previous Warcraft and Blizzard games (waiting for Wow incidentally also being the reason I didn't sign up for Eve when it was released)), and a few others for short periods of time. Been playing Wow on and off since the earlier beta tests.
As to maturity level in Eve vs Wow: Eve seems to have a more mature member base, yes, but I think that can be said about pretty much any group anywhere.

26, playing off and on since second beta, so I was pretty young when I started.
Oldest eve guy I know has grandkids, oldest is now 10 iirc, his sons all played aswell. Think he turns 70 this year.
There are quite a few young'ns in eve, but I haven't met too many of 'em.
For me the best part of being in a game with mostly 'mature' people is all the ridiculous smacktalk. A 14yr old knows like 20 R-rated words. In my pvp corps we can talk freely about so much filth and yet have great political and phylisophical discussions the next day, talk about work, the good old days etc.
Yeah eve rules.
And smacking people creatively using terms as midget p0rn is just something 14yr olds can't really do..
All the stuff above does not necessarily reflect my corp, my alliance or even me.. Drone guide.. |

It's a bit of shame not more people posted their char ages to see how long some people have been playing EVE for as well.
Anyways...
I'm 25 (close to 26 now)
Started just over 5 years ago back when i was just 20 and studying at uni, would have got better results if i didn't spend so much time playing this bloody game, but have a job i enjoy (Software Tester) so can't complain.
Which makes my main char (this one) about 5 years and 1 whole month (almost) old. Also have a second account which i've had for about 2 years now.

My sig got edited, and all i got was a lousy e-mail |

44 here and I really do appreciate the maturity in this game. If I want to deal with inmature idiots I just fire up the X-BOX 360 and log in.
