Using the new 2.0ghz MacBook with the "NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory" and "2GB (two 1GB SO-DIMMs) of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM (PC3-8500),"
I was getting about anywhere from 6-35fps and experiencing the same types of graphics problems the others were getting...Black ship, rainbow explosions, texture and model drawing problems.
In my experience, the performance cuts seemed to only occur when the camera was facing an object which was being improperly rendered. Both classic mission decoration objects (asteroids, drone complexes, faction ruins, etc.) and new premium remakes of stations and stargates were affected by render errors.
Render errors causing drops in fps included flaps of infinitely thin texture stretched between branches of a model (the antennae, wings, or connecting structures of caldari objects) or improperly wrapped textures onto models.
The performance difference between running this beta Premium client in OS X and running the Premium client in XP on this same machine lead me to believe that the rendering errors are where a majority of the performance gets sucked into. A good amount of tweaking and I'm sure we can start to see comparable rates between native in XP and 'emulated' in OS X on the faster Apple machines.

So far, it's working pretty well. I'm not having any real trouble with rainbow explosions or anything.
BUT... I've been in FD-MLJ and had a bit of trouble there. For example, occasionally when i try warping to one of the PVP beacon things there, a message asking if i wanted to debug error 0x00000 (or something, i forgot the exact message). Then, when I logged back on, it gave me the same message while trying to warp back from the dead space. This usually happens once or twice, but after a few attempts my ship can then successfully warp back to the beacon and the client runs smoothly for a while. Overall, it's pretty good. I expected there to be more bugs than this to be honest cuz its just a beta, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Didn't get an answer to this - since the debug data seems to be a windows memory dump rather than a normal linux/unix/osx core dump (as far as I can tell), should the stack trace have unmapped symbols? Can you still make use of that *.dmp and should I send it in?
I wouldn't expect a problem with unmapped symbols on a debug version where the stack trace is generated from the core file on the same specific system the crash occurred on and the dump was generated on...?
I want to contribute bug reports for these crashes, but I don't want to flood you guys with incomplete data if the dumps are useless. -- What's your EVE New Year's Resolution for 2009? |

If you have .dmp files please attach them. Even if part of the data is garbled, it is better than no crash data at all and I am sure one of our boffins can make use of it.

looks fine so far on my MBP /w 8600 GT and 4 gig RAM.
first undock took a while (i guess because of the cache being built).
some quirks from known issues happened so far.
the jaguars textures looked a bit pale to me.
and the fact i had to do 2 hard resets after playing with graphics settings i ended up having full blackscreens and no way to get back to the OS.
is there a way to force the client to windowed mode on start?
didn't knew the scythe has a completely revamped model on premium. now my scimitar is a joy to look at compared to the urge to throw up when looking at it in classic ;P

just tried it on a current-generation iMac (2.4Ghz C2D, 3GB RAM, ATI Radeon 2600HD, 10.5.6) for a bit over an hour - not a single crash, FPS was around 45 for regular stuff and ~22 in a pretty large fleet combat with a few hundred drones - dropped to ~17 when my ship started burning, though. found a few minor graphics bugs in the map. all in all, a good start! |

I can use a boot camp Vista x86 to run EVE premium, even then my MBP 17 2006 overheats. Under MAC OS the new premium client doesn't look as smooth, sound is slow, colors do no show right.
As mentioned before image, side panel and labels have problems, they look like white snow. I have random diagonal stripes and tearing across the screen, they come and go, it looks annoying.
I don't think that MBPs are suited for Windows Video games. I've tried so many, they all do not work. It is easier to use Vista in dual boot mode.
There are far too many issues with MAC os client, I play on my PC and if I need to travel I use Vista partition on my Mac Book Pro 17'' which meets the minimum requirements (late 2006). |

Which version of the Mac OS are you running? Are you running any other applications in the background? What resolution are you running the client at and what are your client settings?

System Specs : 2.2Ghz Macbook Pro 8600M GT 128MB VRAM 4GB RAM 10.5.6
Strange sever fps drops both in station and in space.
Picture 1
Average FPS appears to be about 30 in station and about 25 in emptyish space - much the same as I'm getting with the current client though this premium client seems to have more sever fps dips and spikes than the classic client. To put this in perspective booting the same machine into Windows XP gets me about 35-40 fps with the same settings when undocking from Jita 4-4 with 700 people in local. So much for the performance improvement :(
Every time I fire my guns the textures for all ships and the local station get turned off and all I am left with is a black shadow, sometimes the station interior is also mucked up but I've not got a picture of that, and I have to restart to get them back.

So I tried to use the Premium client.
My system specs are these:
OSX Leopard 10.5.6
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB DDR2 SDRAM
NVIDIA 8600M GT
I assume I can run the client well, because premium runs fine when I use bootcamp. Back to the matter at hand though; I changed the name of the current Mac client I had installed to EVE Online TQ (as suggested), installed the Premium client, and was able to start it once.
While logged on, I decided that I wanted to turn up the graphics a bit, and so I did. Upon doing so, I was prompted to restart the game to put the changes into effect, and so I did.
Upon restarting though, I didn't receive the splash screen. Instead I received the cursor and a black screen. I tried to command-tab, and command-option-esc, but that didn't work either. I was forced to force shutdown my computer (aka, pressing the power button). I thought, weird, let me try again and see what happens. I did, and the same exact thing happened. I received the black screen of death. Upon experiencing this again, I thought that I may have messed something up when changing the graphics, so I uninstalled and then reinstalled the client thinking my problems would be fixed.
Oddly enough though, they weren't. I continue to get the black screen of death every time I start up the premium client, and am now at an impasse. How do I get the client working again? All that I did was change a graphics option; I didn't think I would royally mess up the client in such a way. Has anybody else had this problem? If so, what did you do to fix it? Even if you haven't had it, any idea on how to fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Does anyone else have a Macbook Air? Just so that we could check if the performance is the same, or is just my rig that's working poorly. I did see a topic about someone using a Macbook with X3100 and he had better performance (although it's a different cpu though, but still). |

Do you mean the premium client? I still can't use premium on my 2nd Gen iMac (C2D). It just get's stuck on "entering station" and i can hear the music and all. Classic side of the premium client seems work nicely and actually feels...snappier. Not sure if there have been any changes in it (or is it just the lack of player amounts doing it). |

What a brilliant idea. So I go out and buy leopard, then wait a while and go out and buy snow leopard! Marvellous! Also I have no need to upgrade other than CCP's code because I have leopard on my laptop and it's not really bringing any "new" value to my imac if I do so.
Will premium lite (when it's released) support Tiger at all? As the HW is getting the axe... It's a rather radical move from CCP to axe both HW and OS (perhaps). |

I'm using a new MBP with the 9600M GT and getting 30-60 fps depending on environment, with bloom on. The only thing that I noticed so far is that in some effects (mostly shields), textures are replaced with random text, so it looks like text is floating around a station or ship. I think this bug has been mentioned before this beta, but it seems to be persisting.
Otherwise, nice job guys!

Ok, I spent a litte more time on SiSi now. Tried to fiddle with basically everything you can fiddle and the performance on a 1st gen Air is on default stuck at 8fps. While fiddling and playing around with shadows (high quality actually raises performance) I get around 8-15fps (real jiggy though)
Shadows off and on, same fps. Window mode, fullscreen, same fps. Different resolutios, same fps. Fiddling all over, same fps. HDR on, all black. Whoops... Classic or premium...same fps. (classic does jump up and down on the fps, and i tried all the settings with similar results.
Before someone says it's a poor processor...well from what I'm looking eve is leaving 30-40% of cpu power unused. (Eve is using around 100-110%, while in space.) At station the fps is like 3-4fps, but in space 10-15fps, and in station eve leaves 50-60% of cpu and still the fps is even worse.
So Eve is farm from using the cpu efficiently, so it might be up to the GPU, but X3100 is a supported one... more coding boys :)

Originally by: CCP Whisper For those of you wondering about the continuation of the Classic graphics client, Zulupark just published a new devblog which outlines the strategy we will be following in the future. What this means for all players, Mac users included, is that you will have more options to fine-tune the performance of EVE and get the most out of your machine. We will be working closely with Transgaming in the next couple of weeks to make sure this Premium Lite client works.
I haven't had a chance to load the beta client yet, but just so we're clear Whisper, the EVE Premium client is the full (SM3) beta client, correct? I saw that dev blog, and to be honest the first thing that popped in to my mind is that this beta may be the Premium Lite client, since I know SM2 performance and support is far more stable under Cider/WINE than SM3.
And I'll run the POS test later tonight to see if you get beer or the frying pan. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Null-Sec Player Influence Map http://dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Veritefw/FWinf |

So I've finally gotten it working and here's what I have to say. It runs, but not the best, and I have an NVIDIA 8600GT M with 256mb, which should be more than enough. That being said, I've tested with with the HDR on, bloom set to low and the shadows set to high, and it runs. Like I've said, not always well. Around gates and stations the fps drop a lot, and the game tends to hitch as I undock from stations. I also crashed once after going through a gate. I'm going to continue testing and post some more. |

Correct. What you are testing at the moment is the full Premium client designed to take maximum advantage of SM3. The Premium Lite client is in the last stages of development and we should be releasing that for public testing in the next couple of weeks.

We had our weekly status call with Transgaming today and they're already looking into some of the reported issues. Stability and performance remain our top priority with graphics quality following so close behind that the space between those two agenda items won't accept even the most glitzy of credit cards. |

Wrong textures (like in classic mode) Warp : Fleeing Drake solution : change resolution Wrong Shield booster/hardeners : 39,0¦C upsidedown ;) solution : change resolution Missing Alpha layer : Target icons (when they're not black) cloaked NPC :D Cloaking : Sometimes it doesn't cloak. (already decloaked after jump) : no screenshot, eve's too fast for me now Hanging Fps at stargate Arrival (loading) : No. (not a bug of course) approaching stargate Misloved Federation Navy station : it happens (almost stations are great thus)
- Hardware Monitoring :
- With smcFanControl disabled :
Cpu at 40¦C Gpu at 80-82¦c (max limit hardware 85¦C) (there aren't gpu monitor on mac, but i know the sound of my 8800 tiny fan does at high temp, thanks to rivatuner on windows Memory : ECC fine, 70-80¦C (80¦ starts CPU fan run faster. never go higher than 81¦c)
- 2 Client running : Way too hot
Smc enabled for 2 clients : 1200rpm for pci bay. Gpu under 80¦
- Memory Usage :
1 client starting : 500MB. After 1hour of market surfing, fitting, docking, undocking, warping missioning : 1Gb to 1.4Gb memory usage Memory limit (whole system crash, => hard reboot) 1.40Gb
- 2 clients sum up : Running in 1920x1200, premium online
Max memory usage : 900-1200Mb by each client. no crash so far (1h playing, gone in serpentis extravaganza). With safari, and basic operation like window server it left 600Mb out of 6Gb(memory leak?). screen 1 ----- screen 2 with mem usage Average FPS : (fps aren't very stable, compared to 1 client) 15-20 in missions, 30-60 docked. New Bug : Some time it hang on, very very laggy (like 1 or 2 fps every 3 secs) solution : change resolution back and forth.
So mainly Alpha layers and memory leak bugs. Great job. I remember Casqade telling us on os x channel : "Premium is a piece of leading technology". it seems like he was right. Continuing my investigations another day. Have to pass by deltole. We're proud and glad to test such a big work.
Note : Disabled HighDefRendering coz it doesn't decrease my fps, BUT highly increase temperature and stress my gpu to the death.

Sound is still somewhat slow, everything is different from Vista premium client. Random diagonal black blurry stripes, impossible to screenshot as they come and go lightning fast.
