I've had a few mac laptops and yes they do get hot, but I haven't had a single overheating problems (with the exception of eve). If you do the math with only ventilation sure, it shows it will burn, but remember that these machines use their cover as a heatsink (and a quite effective one).
I've done 3D rendering (GPU assisted) on full tilt on many occasions and everything was more or less running at 200% for hours. Did it get warm? Sure, did anything fail or blow up? No.
How about not keeping them laptops on fluffy carpets and cats sitting on them.
But I'm still furious with Apple. I can't use my laptop underwater. Bstards. |

It's still an integrated graphics card, not a discrete GPU as in the recommended spec. It's still shared memory, unlike the rec.spec., which means the amount doesn't matter much — it's the memory bandwidth that gets nuked when the graphics processing has to compete with the CPU for memory access.
So no, it's not above spec. |

As far as i can see, its still better to run Eve via Bootcamp on a Mac ? :( |

Of course it is, this is a BETA version, it's not a finished product.
I experienced some big, weird, purple silhouette of whatever ship I was in when facing stations and planets.

I encountered this too. Turning shadows off seems to get rid of them. |

Edited by: Kayhar on 22/01/2009 22:44:24 Hey guys 1st post on these forums for me.
I'm running the beta on a macbook pro 512mb nvidia geforce. It works extremely well so far from a speed point of view even giving me better fps than the classic client does. I usually only play eve on bootcamp for this very reason but now it seems this client will let me get rid of the partition. In this client i run between 25 and 40 fps in space. On the old classic client i run between 20 and 30 fps. Obviously it being a beta there were a few bugs listed below:
-When i minimized the client by ship turned into a black box silhouette on and off for a couple of minutes. The rats i was fighting did the same. I have had issues with other games when minimizing and going back to the application so it may just be a mac os issue. -I launched my drones and in the brackets it said only 3 were in space out of the 5 however all 5 were out as i could see them attacking the rats. -When jumping there is no cloaking effect to be seen but i presume this is still just to be added. -The undock mini button was blurred when docked in station.
Very impressed CCP. This will save me loads of bother having to load into windows.

Probably mentioned already.....but....
Cloaking effect is missing. Ship just goes translucent with no transition.
A note to the devs about the fan advice. From my iMac I have tried a few things, I used the smc fan control utility and concluded as long as your SMC is reset and the PRAM cleared...the system will cool itself adequately.
CPU temp never gets higher than 110 and the GPU stays at 120, heatsink gets to 115. However the system will scale your fans up to speed for you to maintain temp. On my MBP it's a different story, and the smcfancontrol util is a must.

I am having some issues that are graphics related. Sometimes shields on the ship when activated just turns into a square or circle with numbers on them. This also applies to missile effects, and sometimes fogs around missions etc. Is there any known fix for this? |

Edited by: Shin Chogan on 23/01/2009 11:06:06 How disappointing, finally got some corp members online at the same time. Only about 5 of us with and a bunch of drones and it turns into a slide show on my MacBook Pro :(
If I change the camera view so it is only showing empty space then I get about 20 fps but when I have a station and 5 ships plus drones it is about 3 fps. If I turn shadows off then I get back to 20fps all the time

Ok, I'll make a note to bring up the issue shadows with the Transgaming devs as that does seem to something that's affecting all users, not just specific chassis or graphic cards. Note: This does not mean we don't look at issues affecting specific versions of Mac, but something that's affecting everyone will probably get a higher priority than isolated incidents.
In other news, we've managed to trace and fix the cause of the memory leak. There's also some work going on to address some texturing and shader handling issues which should result in better stability or performance (it might even fix the problem with switching on shadows). Once that gets checked in we will try to get an updated beta build out as soon as possible. This probably won't happen before the weekend but we'll try to get it out as soon as possible. |

Ok, I didn't see anyone having this problem, so I'm hoping someone can point out a simple mistake I am making.
1. I normally play Eve on a PC that doesn't have that great of a graphics card, but none the less I run premium graphics with video settings set on the low end. 2. A month ago I bought a brand new 24" iMac, the best money can buy with the best graphics card, so I want to see Eve in all it's glory now that the Beta has been released. 3. I download and install the Beta Singularity install file from this post. 4. I start Eve and I'm at the Tranquility Server Login page (NOT the Singularity Server). Eve wants to run some patches, I comply and then it restarts. 5. Same thing... I'm still at the Tranquility Server login page. I log in and I have NO premium graphics option. 6. I thought if I downloaded the Beta it should take me to the Singularity Testing server automatically? Should I have not installed the patches or something? 7. What am I doing wrong?

I just downloaded the beta today and gave it a quick try. Now I don't want to go back to TQ and the Classic :( I'll give it a better test tomorrow, but I'm very impressed at first look!!

OK looks like you are starting the Classic Client.. did you follow these steps?
Originally by: CCP Whisper
To install the client, please download the client from this location. We recommend that you rename your already installed/existing EVE Online application to something like ôEVE Online TQö prior to installation, as the process will create a new EVE Online copy in your applications folder and could potentially overwrite an existing installation of EVE Online. The beta Premium graphics client will automatically connect to the test server Singularity.
did you rename the Classic install? are you using a doc alias pointed to the classic client? if so make sue you are launching the correct client.
Hope this helps. |

Today i tried the beta. I'm not very impressed. Just flew into a Lvl1-Complex. When the enemies started shooting, i got a (the) graphic-bug. Most textures got pink, the modules on the hud and the white text were garbled, grainy and intransparent. The music stuttered a lot, i had to turn it off.

After some initial installation issues, the premium client worked well for me (I did 1 L4 mission, no problems at all), except that my boot.ini was missing as was the right mouse button.
System: iMac 24" 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo 2GB RAM ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro, 256MB, 1920x1200 fps: about 40 in station (not very good), 20-30 in an L4 pocket.
As for the installation issues, I have no good description or explanation. I installed the classic client and it would not run, then the premium one, it also wouldn't run (but they always created the preferences directory). After deleting both and installing them again, they worked.

I'm having texture issues in missions. Almost always see structures that look like a big ball of yarn or weird text printed on everything. Is this a common problem? Is the beta resolving any of this? Thanks. |

Okay,my iMac a Core Due and not supportet.
But i have upgraded from 10.4 to 10.5 for EvE.
And i have to admit that where for the performance and stability a worse choise. I never encountered under 10.4 the "Stationtexturegetlostthing" or that slow performance, and the show info bug (clicking show info you are back on the desktop)

D/L today and just ran about for a while - warping, gates, stations. No problems at all. No strange textures. Good performance. No rigorous tests, but initially seems fine.

CCP, you *are* going to fix the windowed/fullscreen mode dropdown menu yes? I'd like to be able to switch between the two someday without having to edit the pref file. |

Ahoy..
I turned on HDR and Shadows.
Since then I just get a blank screen on loading the client, not even as far as the log in screen.
Not enough info yet for a bug report. But just wanted to know.
What do I need to delete to be able to 'reset' my Graphics prefs back to default? There an ini file hiding somewhere?

Loaded up the premium client. I see Zero increase in frame rate but i also didn't see it slow down at all. I have 11 macintosh computers around the house and office here and have tried both the regular and premium client on many of them. I expected to see some increase, especially on our newest hackintosh but really didn't see any improvement in that area. Shadows should be turned off. I just wish the client could offload more to the video card which would allow some speed ups. Eve is not very stable for me at all. I havn't figured out why, but on our newest water cooled hackintosh it is really unstable, lowering clock speed doesn't change stability so i'm guessing it is driver related.

Edited by: Dreeder on 28/01/2009 23:16:47 Installed and run fine, been flying about, running a couple of lvl4 missions and so far the only problem ive noticed is the cloaking not working and ships turning black (mine and npc rats)
Framerates are about the same as the standard OSX client, which arent as good as the Crossover client... somewhere between 100fps in stations and 25-35 in missions.

I seem to remember that pre-Trinity it worked. After Trinity, well after Trinity it was crash-boom every 5-10 minutes Haven't used it since, I just hit the windows close button since I always play in windowed mode. This sometimes may lead to an crash tough. |
