Quick Question - is that ATI Radeon Graphics Card the Recommended or REQUIRED card? Because I am running Nvidia here =/ and have higher specs than all those other specs you posted Mr. Admin and sure would be bummed if thats the *required* one =P.

That would be a minimum requirement, but you don't have to stick with ATI. Any NVIDIA powered Mac should work; the only NVIDIA GPUs Apple ever slapped together with an Intel CPU all more than meet the minimum specification and performance requirements. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Null-Sec Player Influence Map http://dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Veritefw/FWinf |

I'm almost completely ignorant with regard to graphics cards - my Macbook runs the classic client on a 64MB card, which I tried with the premium beta and it fell quite short (failure to load textures, white background, etc.)
I have a question about the graphics card in my iMac though. I looked at the data and it said 128MB, which I thought would be sufficient, but when I tried the beta I got an unhandled exception. The thing seemed to be working though, as I got a tiny glimpse of my executioner in smexy premium, before the client crashed.
Would this be a problem with the beta, or with my graphics card? I suppose it's the latter, but I wanted to make sure before I give up Eve for lack of hardware.

Yes! I was able to fix the problem, forgot to post here what I did. It seems to be linked to the shadow settings. HDR and bloom work perfectly with no apparent performance drop, but if I ever set the shadow above normal, then restart, the client seems intent to not start up, and just hangs at a black screen. However, it turns out force quitting still works. I just had to clear the cache to set everything back to default.
As a side note: MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A SEPARATE PREFERENCES FOLDER FOR THE PREMIUM CLIENT. I ended up having to clear preferences for both because the presence of preferences for 2 clients in the same folder ended up completely screwing my fps in both clients. Everything seemed to work again after clearing the caches and pointing the premium toward its own preferences folder.
Rookie mistake, I know. |

the white/blurry thing is the exact issue I had that i was going to try and get a screenshot of before the client continually hung

No crashes so far, graphics is corrupt. Heat is significant, but hardware has not failed. (Classic client often caused restart due to excessive temperature)
Sound is still somewhat slow, everything is different from Vista premium client. Random diagonal black blurry stripes, impossible to screenshot as they come and go lightning fast.

Hi there,
Downloaded, installed (after renaming current Eve online iteration), and loads up the login front-end fine.
Problem is I can't actually connect to the server - rejects my username and/or password.
I have confirmed that the account username and password does indeed work on tranquility but not for singularity.
Am I missing something? I am not on a trial account.

Because I'm brand-new to MACs (finally had all I could stand of that "other system"), I'm afraid I can't provide much in the way of techie-smart feedback. But I can and do applaud CCP and the team that is working on this project. My shiny-new iMAC 24 has had its problems with the classic client, problems similar to some already mentioned like freezes, hangs, crashes and recrashes, and cold rebooting the machine in order to restart the game and a few others. I was worried that maybe I blew a lot of money for an even buggier sort of gameplay. But I see that CCP is not only aware of these client issues, but also is moving forward with a better and more enjoyable platform. New bugs or not, I call that due diligence and good customer service. Happy Day! THANK YOU CCP.

Tried out new Mac client during todays downtime on a new 15" MBP (2.54GHz, 4GB). Aside from a couple of minor graphical glitches which I'll stick in a bug report the client worked great.
Thanks CCP!

yes it will not work on 10.4 Dr Sheepbringer has tried it on his iMac and it didn't work. Apple has upgraded the graphics drivers in 10.5 but not 104, but hopefully 10.6 (Snow Leopard) will be out by then so you could skip 10.5.

I have tried running premium on my macbook pro.. 1 gig ram, ati x1600, and 10.4.11
All runs smoothly, with 24fps outside station 15-20fps in station.. It didnt even make the fans/cpu go crazy and overheat! Woop!
The only issue is graphical.. with weird things happening when im in space, seems like the models for the ships are being reproduced in weird ways..
I sincerely hope that the client will eventually run ok on 10.4.11 as i use my computer for other things apart from eve, and some of the higher end audio software i use has never been updated for 10.5.6 (And i cant afford several hundred pounds worth of updates even if they do...)
So what's the crack CCP? Will it be more stable on both 10.4 and 10.5 with bug fixes and community feedback? Or are the issues with 10.4.11 here to stay?

Well it's only my iMac, so it might be case sensitive, but overall I think us Tiger users are just calling for trouble, so my advice is to upgrade, but not now! I just hope that CCP is up to par with Snow Leopard. SW is rumored to be released in Q1 (same as Premium Lite and classic shutdown).
So I personally am planning on upgrading to Snow Leopard, not only Leopard. It's cutting close and I with that either Premium Lite works on Tiger at that time (if SW gets delayed) or if CCP is having trouble with SW (Just because it works smoothly on Leopard doesn't automatically mean it will run smooth on snow leopard). I would hate to upgrade from Tiger (on which Eve might not work) and to Snow Leopard and notice that it's not working properly on that one. Also, I'm not planning on buying two OS X versions inside a timeframe of months. |

Your performance experience was pretty much the same as mine (i.e. good), and though I have 10.5.4, would the "reproduced models" look like the screenshots I posted around page twołas in, they look purple, big, and inflatable? I'm just curious, as it appears I'm the only one in the thread so far that's gotten those anomalies.
Though, now that I think about it, if EVE ever had a Pride day, those graphic glitches would be perfect.

Which version of the Mac OS are you running? Are you running any other applications in the background? What resolution are you running the client at and what are your client settings?
I got the same issues on my MBP 17", early 2006, which I believe is the same model he's got. Using 10.5.6.

My system is a Macbook pro Core2Duo 2,4 / 8600GT 256 / 4Gb Ram. I can run premium graphics in high mode. With extreme mode I only see a black screen and computer doesn't respond. High mode with HDR (also high) runs well. Some times all ships looks like a black silhouette. Transparency in jump stargates isn't very smooth. Frames per second very well, load processor is low. |

Edited by: Rees Noturana on 15/01/2009 16:38:24 I commented here and filed a bug about constant freezes requiring a forced shutdown of the computer. It happened four or five times the first night I was testing. Anything that initiated a session change locked up my system.
My bug was rejected due to being incomplete so I read up on what they wanted and started testing again. Since then I haven't been able to lock up the system at all. That's pretty nice but I still wonder what was happening that first night.
Love the new graphics. No real performance increase but other than the known graphics bugs I don't want to go back to classic. Can't wait for March. |

Yep, almost dientical graphical glitches.. seemed to appear only when the camera was pointing in a specific direction, and grow/shrink as I zoomed in and out..
I would really like to knwo that CCP were at least trying to make this client compatible with the 10.4.11 os. I know its way past update time for some of us mac users.. but the cost of a graphics card pales in comparison to updating things like ableton and reason etc...

Ugh, just accept it Apple moves forward, not backward. I'm no techie but it would not surprise me if updates to drivers are OS specific. So, implementing driver updates for an old OS, is double work, way more difficult then updating the next OS currently used or the one after that.
And what are you whining about! Our Mac OS is priced at a reasonable 125 USD, with everything included! Just look at the junk MS is offering at their consumers for way more and then you have to pay premium prices to get all, viruses not excluded. |

I know its not the optimal solution but partitioning your drive or using a second one for Leopard might be an option for you. The under the hood improvements in Leopard and Snow Leopard really appeal to developers. Staying with Tiger, except for your audio work, its going to get tougher for you. I run EVE on my Macbook Pro 2.6GHz, 4GB ram, Geforce 8600 GT Mobile 512 RAM I get about 30FPS in Stations and about 25 in random space with setting all the way up. I don't think its all that bad until I apple-tab out of the game and my whole computer is super choppy. It isn't processor that is making it so choppy cause my CPUs are running at about 30%/30% or less. It seems to be something that is sucking up all the draw time. I'd say my comps FPS in general os x while the game is apple tabbed is about 5fps or worse, but still responding like normal.
I also run Windows Vista on a separate partition on the same machine. I get easily double or more FPS while playing and I don't have the alt-tab problem in windows. I was really hoping I could just play on mac :P, but I'm looking forward to it anyway.

Edited by: Cor Aidan on 15/01/2009 23:05:15 I played around with this last night just before the Singularity downtime... some basic observations.
System: MacBook Pro 3,1 Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz; 2GB RAM; GeForce 8600M GT 256MB OS X 10.5.6
Surprisingly this client seemed to run cooler than the current Trinity build for me at similar fan speeds. Of course, I always set Interval One.
The only major glitch I saw was the black ship on my Domi - the only time this occurred for me, though, was when I first set my sentry drones to start firing at a rat. Interestingly, when I put them away and brought out my flight of Ogre Is and played around with looking at the Ogres and the rat (Domination Drone in this case) my ship texture returned to normal. Note that the whole ship did not go black - the round bits on the side and a rectangular bit that connects them along the bottom of the ship remained shiny and silver.
I noted some delays when entering warp after the third warp I took between belts in system (cache was set to 128MB).
I spent a good bit of time playing around in station with HDR, bloom, shadows, and various Z-buffer depth and RGBA settings. All this at 1280x1024 resolution windowed. Quick summary:
With shadows OFF all ships showed up extremely dark - I could barely see any details on ships: Thorax, Ishtar, Deimos, Domi, Hyperion, Mega, Prophecy, Harbinger, Armageddon, Myrmidon, and Amarr Shuttle are what I looked at.
Shadows ON: All ships had what I'd consider to be a layer of "fog" on their surface - I presume this was related to the lighting as there were tearing effects in this fog that got better or worse depending on Z-buffer depth and stencil settings (neither switching between HDR and bloom levels nor XRGB and RGBA modes seemed to have an effect here). I saw no qualitative change in this tearing effect when going from Low to High shadows; I didn't have time to try Extreme before the downtime. (Another note - dither on/off didn't seem to have any effect on the fog tearing either).
In all, looks pretty good on my system with the usual suspects that have been around the Mac client since the beginning: mostly looks like issues with the Z-buffer depth and stencil (seems to be some major issues with those) and the usual corruption of assets over time... unfortunately I know how hard it is to find memory leaks when you're using third party APIs (could be an issue with clearing accumulation buffers or something though as a resolution, Z-buffer, or pixel format change always seems to fix the garbled textures).
I also had some instances where it seemed I had to click things several times in the UI to get things to activate.
That's all I have from my notes I scribbled down. |

Hi all,
I just wanted to post a quick note, thanking you all for taking time out to help us identify all the remaining issues in the Mac Premium Client. At TransGaming, we're doing our best to fix these last bugs as fast as we can so that you can enjoy the best experience on the platform that you all love.
As mentioned, we're already looking into several of the identified issues, like the memory leak, targeting stability foremost with graphical glitches close behind. The detailed information already posted will help us provide a stable, amazing looking client when Premium ships. Great job, all!
Just a few quick notes:
The ATI X1600 and ATI X1900 both have the R500 chip. Unfortunately, there is an issue with these cards that currently hard-locks EVE from time-to-time. This is a known issue, and we're currently working to provide a workaround. Thanks in advance for you patience.
It is recommended that you update your OS to the most recent point release. In every OS update, there are fixes to graphics drivers, memory management, etc. The point release upgrades are free and will ensure that you are running the best drivers for your hardware.
Keep the feedback coming, and thanks again!
