Simple solution would be to use the same method they use with stacking and docking of windows... configure the shift, alt or ctrl key to bring up the radial menu... i.e. normal left click, select item, press alt and left click brings up the radial...

well, we have now an option to put the radial menu onto the middle mouse button... though I'm sure I'm not the only one that has the middle mouse button mapped to Double Click... How about using the same method that we have for docking windows......
