i do not think there exists a hard drive large enough that cannot be copied into an image in less than an hour. More hard drives can be copied in parallel.

I'm pretty sure the bank would have the money to throw at getting 5 9's uptime. Sure CCP could get 5 9's but your monthly fee would likely have to go up to pay for the extra hardware, licences and staff...
Edit: 5 9's = 99.999% - Sorry, used to referring to it as that at work.
.... which confirms my point: it's a matter of how much they invest in the tools (i.e. DB) and people (e.g. DB designers, admins etc.) ... obviously they need to throw a few more ISK at this

I am pretty sure the Eve database servers are not the issue here. I am pretty sure CCP has enough common sense to run them in clusters and to do proper replication on them just in case the SHTF.
Just doing a restore on it is not the issue either.
Somewhere, some code, really screwed up and is feeding the DB garbage.
GIGO
(Garbage in garbage out)
Right now the ccp devs are debugging and stack tracing thousands of lines of code to figure out what is feeding the DB garbage.
Have fun devs!

So you (and others) wouldn't moan if that entailed your monthly payment (or whatever you choose for a payment cycle) went up as a result of providing for that?

Actually, doing this is not the smartest route to take. What they probably do (it depends a little bit on the manufacturer of the storage they use, but the general idea is the same for all), is that they create a 'snap'. This snap is basically a point in time, rather than a true copy of the storage. Next, they start up the databases/server(s) again. From the point of the snapshot onwards, only the stuff that differs from the situation at moment the 'snap' was taken will be written to storage. Meanwhile, the backup can be made of the 'snap', since that data is still there. Once the backup is finished, the 'snap' is destroyed. This means that all the 'old' versions of the stuff that changed is thrown away, thereby releasing the storage. This is the 'HP' way.. EMC does it the other way around, roughly....

I say thousands because chances are they know the function, or at least the module that is feeding that particular row and/or table (most RDBM's can give you that info now days) and are just now trying to figure out what is wrong with it and why its doing what it's doing.
I certainly do not envy them atm.

Wtf are you all complaining about? so the server isn't up for a few hours.. buh f..... huh! It's Friday night for ..... sake. Get outside, drink a beer, get some sunlight on the pale skin, get laid...
Maybe if it was the 3'rd or 4'th day in a row this was a problem you'ld be entitled to complain. Anything before that..stfu! Attempting to debate with a person who has abandoned all reason is like giving medicine to the dead |

lol - if they can just provide a useable forum that would ge a great start. On your question: they should just make sure that the current features are working in a decent way - i.e. major fleet battles, then I would be happy to pay more

I'm unsure if this is related or could help in tracking things down, but I noticed my API was pulling some corp jobs still as incomplete that I had delivered from another character last week. Sounds like some kind of synching update that missed.
