Edited by: pr0spect on 22/02/2011 04:31:49 We had two points on this freighter, Obelisk, and he warped off. One of our guys had point on him for at least 20 seconds while receiving damage messages from the freighter's vagabond buddy who was trying to run us off. So it's not lag...
Is this some sort of bug or exploit?
Freighter Warping Pointed
The video picks up at the tail end of the ordeal, in the first two seconds the freighter warps.

Sadly local isnt showing his name.

If you put the video on 720p and expand the size you can see he warped out at 20km. Still no clue as to how he did it. He didn't log either, he warped directly to the celestial he was aligned to.

Looks like he got out of range and then when accelerating into warp and leaving the scene briefly show as closer. Since he's already technically in warp and a scrambler doesn't pull people out of warp that's the score.

If disruptors don't pull ppl out of warp ( wasnt sure about that) and a freighter takes so long to warp after order is given...maybe that's it.

You aren't in warp until you finish aligning to your warp destination and until you've got the ship up to 2/3 speed. He was still in that process, and he was pointed for 20 seconds, that's too long of a gap to enter warp after being pointed.

unfourtunate for you we dont have a video of his perspective which probably would have shown him warping and already clicked over the magical 75% mark by the time you nail that point onto him. Also I have seen other incidents though rare where a scrabler would 'miss' which is rather odd sometimes considering falloff is only 1km. Checked that too, sadly there is no deactivation notification and he never hovers the mouse long enough on his point. But on the other hand, if someone moves out of point range the point still remains active till the cycle finishes, even if the target is out of range.

This could be a server/client desync, with the freighter being further away than your client says it is. The freighter pilot was probably laughing at the noobs failing to put a point on during a 45-second align! -- [Aussie players: join ANZAC channel] |

I've had an active point on targets beyond 30km with a 24km point before. Graphically that is. As mentioned, you don't drop the graphic until the cycle ends, even though you no longer have a point.

Edited by: FeralShadow on 22/02/2011 07:11:50 It's happened to me... Lost a freighter kill due to log off after already pointed as he jumped into system. He logged, we pointed, he still warped. We petitioned, and CCP was none too happy and told us severe steps were taken. (at this point I assumed it was some sort of haxploit) and told us to contact them with further occurances. So... it's not completely unreasonable that it wasn't legit. Just yesterday I was in a stealth bomber testing damage on a buddy and missiles were constantly "animating" damage but his shields wouldn't drop and I got no notification, he was showing as 40km away. I asked him what the hell was going on and he told me on his end I was 100km away. I still had stuff like wallet load fine so it's hard to predict. Good job he wasn't a red, eh? :/

Not quite. There used to be a mechanic where you could log off multiple times such that each time you logged back on, you were a distance away from the point you logged from. Now, no matter how many times you log on/log off, you will always arrive at the point you initially logged off at. _______________________________

At 5 seconds in to the vid you see the notification "Target is invulnerable." If I remember rightly the notification for a target going out of range is "Warp disruptor II deactivates as XXXX is no longer in range."
Most likely desync I'd guess.

or the 'rubber band' effect caused by lag? it most notably happens when come out of warp closer than where server thinks u are and u bounce back...could it be the server was reporting him further than ur client and he just made it into warp cos of that?

Some people should try watching the video before posting, it was not e-war as the onyx and vaga are still targeted, he also has plenty of cap to run the disruptor. It was not a case of the freighter being webbed because the freighter was already pointed, webs will not help in that scenario.
The notification "Target is invulnerable" happens if you try and target someone who is in warp, you should only receive that message if the freighter is already in warp and you are ctrl clicking the overview or spamming the target button.
So yeah, desync/rubber banding or a remote chance that it was an exploit.

why is it always a exploit becuase it does not work in your favor and he got away? Now if there was a game issue that caused him to get popped when he shouldn't have, would you be tear jerking on the forum that you used a exploit?

He said there is a remote chance it was an exploit, and he is right, there is a chance. But like he said himself, it is far more likely to be a simple desync.

Thx to 720p, I can make out some details. There is a missing piece: The exact type of Disruptor used by the cameraman. The camera ship have the Obelisk pointed by a Disruptor whatever (there is no indication of the specific type anywhere. We donÆt know which it is, could be a meagre meta 0 for all we know). A plain Warp Disruptor I have a range of 20km flat. This is an important detail to know because when the overview is showing 20km, the target really is anywhere between 20,000m and 20,999m. This means the target must be shown as being at 19km or less on overview.
The Obelisk is traveling at 63ms at the moment it enter warp. ItÆs already fast enough to warp. I doubt the web for quick warp trick had a play here.
ECM Burst can be safely ruled out. The camera ship does not lose lock on anything. The red boxed Onyx stays red boxed all along.
There is no sensor dampening in effect (that I can see). The Obelisk was the nearest target to the camera man, dampening him well enough to lose that lock would also lose the other two locks. Maybe they dampened the other guy with a point?
ItÆs all about the other guy who is supposed to have a point on the Obelisk, too. We know nothing specific about him so I canÆt take anything but your words for it.
ThatÆs what I can make out of this. ItÆs either: - A bottom of the line Disruptor that fell out of range, - A freak even, - Some kind of exploit.

My point is this, I have lost out on a few kills because of game issues and it was apparent lag or desync played a role, but I am not on the forum with it saying it could be a exploit. I lost out, welcome to eve, I will get him next time.

Warp scramble icons don't appear on the overview when you are the aggressor. You can clearly see the disruptor icon to the right of his target box. Have you ever played this game? Did you even watch the video?
My guess is that it was a tech 1 disruptor.

Tech 1 warp disruptor optimal range 20km Freighter aligned at speed spamming warp continously
Pilot would have to confirm this and may not be willing to own up to freighter loss due to tech 1 gear fitted.
CASE B
Desynch shows carrier closer then it actualy is
Possible but probably unlikley
CASE C
There WAS a method where by ships would log and still warp whilst pointed that a particular russian allaince used to use regulaly with all sorts of ships diwn where i used to pirate. Unfortunatly we cant see the pilot in local chat so cannot confirm whether he logged or not.
NEver did get to the bottome of it (yes i understand logofski rules)
They did it maybe 20 times over 2 weeks then suddenly stopped, i assumed they shut the loophole, but its possible its still there.
possible
NOT HAPPENING:
No scramblers dont miss No target was not insta webbed into warp, he was clearly pointed No target model size does not count No he was not ecmd targeted or burst No the freighter did not have a stab

My estimation:
Freighter was aligned and punching the warp button, You were moving about at over 1km/s at times, trying to kill the Vaga, You went beyond the 20Km disruptor range on the Freighter, The second your disruptor dropped, the freighter warped. This could have been accelerated if the targets were webbing the Freighter to decrease its warp align time.
i.e. You were too busy fighting the Vaga to tackle the freighter properly.

Freighter sig radius - 3.4km Distance to object on overview - nearest edge of sig radius +/- rounding issues Range of targeted modules - calculated as distance from centre of object.
Ergo, your discrepancy.
tl;dr : EvE is all big circles with inconsistent measurement points.
Can someone confirm or deny this please.
I remember that it always used to be the edge of the sphere but this could result in 0 dps when ships were touching due to tracking formula not liking zeros. They then changed to the centre of the sphere to prevent this bug.
4km does seem like a hell of a big discrepancy however.

I'm going to put it in really big bold letters so people can't miss this:
THIS HAPPENS SOMETIMES TO ALL SHIPS
There is a bug that I cannot reproduce where I have clicked to warp somewhere, have started to warp, then been pointed. My warp however does not deactivate (I want to assure you there are no WCS involved.) The ship being scrambled generally has an excruciatingly long spin-up time to warp because it's got some high velocity in another direction or is just plain slow.
This has happened countless times on stations where I should be able to stop warp and dock but can't because I'm locked in warp -- EVEN WHILE SCRAMBLED -- and have wound uplosing my ship to this anomaly. Even more interesting, just a few weeks ago while in 0.0 I was in my Lachesis. I started microwarpdriving hard off the gate and a target caught up with me. As soon as I saw him barreling towards me I hit warp. I aligned to something (albeit incredibly slowly) and then he put the point on me. I for sure thought I was going to lose my ship (Beagle vs Lachesis) but somehow, through some mysterious force I warped.
The local chatter after that was sort of confused. I didn't know what had happened, and he figured I had stabs. I assured him I didn't and we all shrugged it off. All the meanwhile I discovered after looking through my logs that warp notifications no longer show up in your log history, so that just compounded the problem further.

Freighter gets out of point range (assuming ****ty T1 disruptor) so e.g. 20.1km actual rounded down to 20km, point still appears to be active on the target for the duration of the cycle but would've deactivated had freighter not already got up to 75% speed and warped.
Doesn't seem like a very big mystery to me to be honest. If he had been right on top of it and it still warped off, then yeah..

Haven't seen your video because I'm too lazy.
However: Sometimes pointed people just warp, it happens rarely but it's happened to 2 or 3 people I've pointed and a couple of friends who were pointed.
One such time I jumped in tackled a PvPer (he had no stabs) He was well within 24km. Then he just warped. He was as suprised as I was.
Even if I could reproduce it, I wouldn't tell anyone _______________

I too have seen this effect with desync but in particular things not being at the right or expected distance (the indication versus the result of an action).

Wow, I am such a popular subject today. I am the freighter pilot that he claims cheated. I did not cheat. I was playing smart. I was pointed, yes, but i was also fully aligned to a safe spot, and i was 20km+ from the single, yes i said single red that was pointing me. He claims there was 2 but there was one and unless he was using a tech 2 or faction point, 20km is the max range and will let me go once beyond that. So I must sadly say, please learn to pvp better next time you come across a freighter, our fat asses can win and it just happened. Good Day :)

Well I was the vagabond pilot that died in that video. (My poor vagabond:( Donations are accepted!)
The freighter had been aligned and was spamming warp but was pointed by a covops. We killed the cov ops right before the gang jumped in and so the freighter got into warp before they could get into range.
No exploits, no bugs, just bad luck on your part.

I was also there at the fight. Was flying a rapier and killed the covops that had the freighter pointed initially.
While the freighter was pointed by the covops, he was still aligning. Once we killed the covops, I dual webbed him with the rapier. This was done before the first of the gang jumped through. For some reason, he must not have warped at that point because a dual web should have made him instawarp. So my guess is bad luck.
Once the gang jumped through though, I cloaked cause I couldnt do anything to that gang.

I think it was a bug. These guys have been flying around our space and are definitely flying ships that wouldn't have a plain out t1 point. I recall seeing two cynabals, a gila, rapier, and sabre (I think) and they definitely would have fit t2 points at the minimum. Most cynabal pilots fit a faction point so it is definitely some sort of bug.

I never claimed he cheated. I was torn between exploit or bug.
The more I read the more intelligible posts on this thread, the more I think it's just some janky CCP miscalculation.
Furthermore, if you're flying a vagabond and you're using a tech 1 warp disruptor, you need to uninstall Eve. To think people even suggesting this makes for good lulz.
So, in summation I've decided to chalk it up to broken CCP code, maybe we should put it up with the 1000 papercuts post, but then again the reproduction on this seems to be very difficult.

Have seen it before, one dude pulled this trick in a freighter every time he jumped into our lowsec system.
We never figured out what he did, but he managed to warp despite being pointed by at least one HIC and a gazillion of ships.
Always smacked in local afterwards how pro he was for getting out...

I think it's if you hit some magical velocity while you have initiated warp (there's warping text). Happened to me few times. I hit warp and someone points me a little too late but I still warp. I think it might have something in common with that magical stuck in warping state.

Not quite. There used to be a mechanic where you could log off multiple times such that each time you logged back on, you were a distance away from the point you logged from. Now, no matter how many times you log on/log off, you will always arrive at the point you initially logged off at.
It's true most of the time, however, if you are prepared you can still avoid warping back to the point you logged off from. Can't to it in freighter however.
Its more useful if you are in supercapital and dont want to end up in ****caged POS upon login. I have petitioned it in the past and GM's investigated this ... 'trick' ... but as far as I'm aware it has not been classed as exploit so far. All I got back from it was 'we have started internal discussion on how to react to such thing' and clarification that if you would be using it to end up more than 10 AU from celestials in the system this would be classed as exploit.

Had this happen to me on the other end the other day. I had JUST got out of a guy's point range, but wasn't aligned to anything, so I spammed warp to whatever.....fat ass aligning.....aligning....guy got point on me again, but it still said I was in warp. The overview clearly said he had a point on me, yet a few seconds later I was safely in warp.

It's also worth remembering that the space simulation only does its calculations once per second. The rest of the action is interpolated by the client. The freighter might have got to the 20km limit and warped out just after one tick, whereas if he'd stayed on grid for another second your client would have deactivated the warp scrambler due to the freighter being out of range.

I'm like to point out that the point disappeared half cycle.
Now if anyone isn't aware until the cycle finishes you cannot warp regardless of being out of range.
Unless you have a warp stab.
So either this is a new exploit (farmers get your pitchforks) or as many people said it was a desync.
Personally I think the freighter pilot did use an exploit but most likely unknowingly.
Also gutted if he was empty
And next time dont be a ninny and jump into a system with hostiles in....

I've had the same thing happen so me once. Got tackled well by a Crusader orbiting me at ~20km. Clicked warp, the warp message showed up (the big one on the bottom), the tackling message came in, but the big warp drive active didn't disappear and my ship kept accelerating and warping off.

did you deactivate point by mistake and then reactivated it right as the cycle time gave in? I've done that mistake few times and your video doesn't show the begining of the cycle which would prove this point. If you did this mistake and target is spamming warp, he will get away. Now confess!
