Originally by: Ghurthe Look, people can sit here and say 'Oh just spend $100 on a new graphics card'. Sure some people will do that. Some people won't. Some people can some people can't.
Simple fact of the matter is, very few MMOs change their system specs once the game is already released. Eve has done it a few times sure. Trinity was one large example of this, then dominion for new PI, then recently with the dropping of shader 2 support. All well and good, all well documented, all with accompanying discount deals through CCP for new cards.
Now this one. A change that had every indication of being an optional one. One where quite a few players are reporting issues with it. I can run a full graphics client with little to no issues, I can run 2-3 and it's a little choppy. But I get 5 FPS when I try to play CQ. That's simply ******ed slow.
CCP's Demo from fanfest 2008 was one where ambulation was optional. Why remove the optional function of ambulation?
This isn't a whine, this isn't, 'OMG this is awful'. It's just a simple question. Why did CCP remove the option NOT to tax our systems beyond their ability? It's not like the code wasn't there for it. We can see it in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7R6AxoO8yY .
Some people can run this fine, and great, fantastic, enjoy it.
Many can not, and while an upgrade to parts of eve that you can't escape, like ships in the trinity expansion, would warrant an update. An expansion that has no impact other than load times in stations should be able to simply be told not to load. I don't mind if my station view is a black screen. Just please allow us as players to determine if we want to walk around in stations and therefore run the fairly beefy new system specs or not.
And also, plz don't delete my boot.ini again.
I didn't even bother to read your whole post...you are just a whiny little git. Most MMO's eventually fail or lose most of their income because they don't or can't upgrade their graphics and gameplay like EvE can. If you can't spend a hundred bucks for a new vid card once every 7 years to keep up with the game then you obviously don't want to play. So again I say...GTFO and I hope the door hits you. Personally I play EvE because the game has been upgraded so much and because they put so much effort into this game. More effort than any other MMO I have played...and I have played most if not all of them. CCP also gives us 2 free expansions a year...what does Blizzard charge you for their expansions?
So again...shut the hell up. You pay less to play a superior game already. If you wanna stay in the past with ****ty graphics and crap gameplay...go back to WoW. There...I said it... NO BOOBIES LEFT BEHIND! |

We'll have captain's quarters at every station - they're more or less like motel rooms.
Quote: 2) Do you have to pay for Quarters?
What I've read so far indicates that they'll be free, one-size-fits-all quarters.
Thanks for the reply.
Would be nice if, at some point, we could buy artifacts and wall-art and such, to decorate our Quarters with. But I'm not complaining: Incarna is finally a-coming! --

What kind of crappy card do you currently have that makes spending $100 on a new card seem like an upgrade? LOL. I just dropped 400 euros for my ASUS GeForce GTX 580 Direct CU II; and I'm loving it!
Personally, I'm really glad CCP stops catering to the lowest common denominator. I see it as a win-win situation: I get prettier graphics, and, as a bonus, the community as a whole gets rid of several thousand Russian botters with their obsoleted hardware. Everybody wins. --

When i tried to play on the test server with CQ i was system lagging so hard i couldn't control my avatar. the station wouldn't load right and even when i turned EVERYthing down on my graf settings i still was getting hit with lag so bad the game was unplayable.
i would like to see a reply from CCP on what the new system requirements are going to be now.

Er... botters generally don't need to dock. Especially not the ones in the drone regions.
Also, some people don't have the cash to drop on a graphics card that costs that much. And most of our past graphics changes were incremental giving players time to adjust before closing the technology doors on them.
If this change isn't optional CCP will be slamming the door on thousands of players. Yes I don't have a stellar gaming rig, but many eve players don't, it's not bettering the game when thousands of players are forced away because CCP decided that in under a month many computers won't be able to load the stations.
CCP make this optional, add things slowly, and once you hit the point that Incarna has something more useful to it than meat spinning, then you can re-evaluate. Until then, give the players without top of the line gaming rigs who graphics cards cost half the purchase price of an average PC to save up some cash to get one. Even though no other MMO, or any other style of game, really ****s system specs anywhere near as often as Eve does.

The possibility to accept/hand in missions remotely exists and especially the newer epic arcs use it frequently.
Either CCP has some secret reason for making us dock all the time or they are just too lazy to modify the existing missions to support this.

I have tested all this on Duality, and like what I see - only as a stepping stone toward a fuller station environment. CQs in themselves are quite useless.
As to the performance question, I'd add that CQ most likely will not require much more computing power than the current environment. If your rig can handle a space fight with 10 or more models, you certainly won't have problems with CQ, once it gets optimised.
It's going to be interesting to see when someone exports these models into a 3d design program and do a polycount. I wouldn't be surprised if the ship models have higher polycounts than the human models. In games like this, the detail is in the textures, not in the models themselves.
So. What needs to be optimised is more likely to be the assets, not the code, as well as the connections to the seperate server that will handle the in-station environments. Optimising the assets, ie optimising the BSP-trees, or whatever is used, won't take two months. And I bet the graphics departments have a lot of assets that have progressed much farther than what's on Duality at the moment.
All in all, looking forward to June 21st. ---

Botters still need > 2.0 Shader Model cards in order to log in with their (mandatory) cool new Avatars.

Nor is that required. We're at Shader Model 5.0 now. It's time to upgrade. You'll be happier for it, in all your games.

With that seemingly logic rationale, CCP would always keep catering to low-end cards. At some point you just have to break the cycle; and I'm glad CCP did. And let me stress again, you really don't need a top of the line video card: just one that isn't hopelessly old. --

I was waiting for ths for a long time.
I liked the fact that the balcony gives a sense of sheer size for this nightmare we all saw. How about smaller ships though? I feel the need that the initial video (2009ish) of two corp members walkign next to a Zealot made it look just huge. I think that was the perspective we ought to have.
I must still say that i hate the fact that the neocom and other bars are ever present. you make something huge as this and have not thought of a new UI? This for me is THE immersion breaker. If you make the UI all time present i incicst you give me the option to fly Hello Kitty ships painted Pink with lila stripes.
You said shops and stuff..... i wonder. Are these comming out alogn with the system whide roid fields as well you promissed in the industrial expansion?
Deliver. Please do....

So I'm only getting 5 FPS on duality with the lowest settings possible. I know I don't have a great graphics card, but I don't really think it should be THAT slow.

I've got a great graphics card and still do not want to be forced to deal with this stuff. I play Eve for internet spaceships not to walk an avatar around an office.
Also what are those of us who don't spend all of our time in Eve spinning ships in stations getting in this "expansion"?

I think it is great! Thanks for the new features. Now I probably missed this, but will we be able to do fighting, reconnisance, hunts, treasure finds? Or is this mostly a social thing?
Either way, I reall appreciate the advances to the game

Edited by: Jennifer Nardieu on 26/05/2011 17:58:35 Edited by: Jennifer Nardieu on 26/05/2011 17:57:37 Please don't force this on us. Allow us to choose whether or not we want to get out of our ship.
Not because of having a crap graphics card, but because CQ just introduces too much friction.
Friction = The number of clicks/button presses required to do something in an interface.
Eve has always had one of the most frictiontastic interfaces in any MMO. Putting pretty colours over it and allowing players to have realisticly swaying bewbs on their avatar doesn't go to any sort of effort to make this worthwhile for the majority of your players.
It looks pretty, it shows off your progress on ambulation and it provides another twist to the game that is EVE (congratulations to all of you that worked hard on it) but please please please do not make this the default view upon docking with a station.
