I think there should be a separate top ten row for males and females, for several, mostly obious reasons. A category called something like a "freak of nature" or maybe also "gender bender" wouldn't be all that bad either, considering there is a good number of people who are gifted at purposedly creating non-standard, hilariously silly looking avatars. Voting history showing the last 10-20 pairings and their results for each character wouldn't hurt either. |

I see you received my messages, Nova.
I haven't looked at the site ever since the incident when people were abusing the voting system. It looks like everything has been fixed. The site is way faster now. Very nice.
Eurydia Vespasian wrote:kind of why I stopped going to it. I started to feel like that for every legit vote I cast a dozen troll votes were simultaneously going on lol Yeah, I tend not to spend time on voting for this same reason. It's mainly nice to see what people have done with the character creator. It's definitely the best one around. |

Nah not really. But back in 2011, during the summer of rage, players who shared CCPs view on things bought the ridiculously expensive monocle as a identifying symbol. And mocked the protesters on the forums wearing them on their avatars.
Players havent forgotten that.

This is a pretty neat site! People have really done some fairly interesting portraits... Makes me want to try it myself. But I'll be notoriously picky and... argh. Hmmm. Still, could be interesting to try. |

Pretty awesome site, thanks for putting the effort of making this!
I'd however point out that the pure random occurrences on the pairings a bit weird, after "pushing the buttons" for a few hundred times, I found that one of the random nature of the pairings is imho, a concern. Even when you have a really high traffic on that site, it's virtually impossible to reach a "proper" 'top X' faces/avatars using this algorithm.
When I first looked at the top 12 for instance, I find it weird (no offense to the avatar creators though) that some of the best avatars around like Ariel Dawn, Alice Saki, Fazmarai weren't even there. A lot of those avatars that has beaten them in terms of votes count honestly made no sense to me.
Please correct me if I'm wrong though, but I believe that matching people with high ratings with bad avatars would surmount to nothing. A moderately good avatar might have more votes than some really good ones just because they occur more often and might have been paired with mostly oogly avatars.
I also don't think there won't be much of an issue when 'good' avatars are paired only with good ones, if someone likes A better than B, then so be it, if both are equally good, someone might pick B over A for the next time. You can even put some entropy counter mechanics to the random pairing to prevent a good avatar from getting a losing streak. This should allow the top 12 to actually be a top 12 'best faces' rather than just the luckiest 12. Maybe Nova should reserve the top spots for those characters and exclude them from the voting, but maybe it is only your opinion that they belong in the top 12 and not everybody's.
Sarah Schneider wrote: A moderately good avatar might have more votes than some really good ones just because they occur more often and might have been paired with mostly oogly avatars.
They don't appear more often than any other avatar.
Sarah Schneider wrote:Another big issue with pure random matching is that the bigger the list are, the more the top ladder becomes a lucky ladder instead of who's the best of them all. You may also want to address the rank evaluation algorithm to solve this issue, because I honestly don't believe that anyone would ever vote/click 3k times on the site so that everyone's covered.
I don't think you understand the voting process, it's not like that 10 voters vote on 10 individual cycles, all voters vote on one cycle at any time. Besides, nobody is prevented from voting against a pretty looking avatar.
It's Avatar PVP at it's best
One improvement would be to remove the character names on the voting pairs as I think some voters might be biased by name and/or reputation. |

Fair enough.
Arisidana wrote:They don't appear more often than any other avatar. That's how "random" works. Pure random without controlled seed actually means that the random distribution is not random at all. If you throw a dice, 20 times, and get 5 occurrences of 2s, the end result would still be "2 appears more often than others".
Arisidana wrote: I don't think you understand the voting process, it's not like that 10 voters vote on 10 individual cycles, all voters vote on one cycle at any time. Besides, nobody is prevented from voting against a pretty looking avatar.
While I won't pretend that I know how the site was written. I'm a software developer and I've designed similar algorithms before. A straight random occurrence pairing does not work without proper evaluation mechanics in place to control the RnG seeds. It doesn't matter if the site managed to lock a single voting instance to a particular user (which is almost impossible without hwid records, ip records are almost useless since a lot of broadband connections uses dhcp anyway) because the sample are so huge that luck factor affects the final results more than the actual results from pairings.
To put it simply it's like this, there are almost seven thousand avatars on that site, how much time does one spent, say each day on the site? maybe a few minutes, maybe an hour or two. How many avatars are included on each activity? a dozen? a hundred? That's less than 1% of the full data sample. Even when someone spent twice the time and do it for a full week he/she'll barely reach a quarter of the avatars on the database.
With plain RnG seed and basic win:loss evaluation, those avatars who were lucky enough to pop out on those instances gets the points (or lose them in the case of downvotes), seeing how similar the win:lose ratios on top 100-200 avatars (around 120 wins and 35 losses) you can easily see that RnG luck has more to do with the actual top score than the 'value' of the avatars in itself.

From what I've seen in the rankings it is quite possible, that an 'average' looking avatar can make it all the way into the Top 10, because she gets less than 'average' matches for a period of cycles, but they can as quickly drop out of the Top 100 again, so yes, luck is probably a big part to get up there. |

You bring up good points about random matching shortcomins, but after trying a few different approaches, random works better and is more reliable, also there are less bugs with it. Randomized approach seems to provide the least-interference type of voting. And I think it has worked ok so far.
Sarah Schneider wrote: Another big issue with pure random matching is that the bigger the list are, the more the top ladder becomes a lucky ladder instead of who's the best of them all. The very first revision of New Eden Faces would send you 1000k+ characters to your browser and let you vote for characters independent of other users. As you can imagine that spiralled out of control on the first day. Some time later the server code would maintain the list of voted characters to prevent voting for the same character multiple times. As of October 2013 it is now handled on the database layer. It is not possible to vote for the same character more than any other character per round. Voting rounds are global. If you voted for Makalu Zarya just now, everyone else will have to wait until this round is over before someone sees Makalu Zarya again. As a voter I wish i could vote and see every character pair, but with that you cannot have balanced votes.

I will add the winning and losing streak counts to the character profile page, but again as I explained above it's best to leave randomized voting as is. If I am to change it again I will surely screw it up and introduce more bugs with this new slightly more intelligent match pairing. There are lots of easy features I could implement first, and if I have time in the future I will consider on improving match pairing and voting algorithms.
Sarah Schneider wrote: Maybe Nova should reserve the top spots for those characters and exclude them from the voting, but maybe it is only your opinion that they belong in the top 12 and not everybody's.
I am planning to add a page with handpicked avatars and maybe update it once a month or until I see better avatars.
Sarah Schneider wrote: One improvement would be to remove the character names on the voting pairs as I think some voters might be biased by name and/or reputation.
Coming in the next update, but as a side-effect you should know you won't have a way to open character profile page. If it's not a big deal then I don't mind removing names when voting. (Speaking of bias, back in the day it would actually show you a winning percentage with a nice progress bar right next to character names) New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |

can't believe I hadn't seen this until today - great work. it's very well designed making it extremely easy to go on a marathon.
this is probably the best way to really see how much people have done with their character creators and portraits since WiS got placed on the backburner. there are some hilarious, repulsive and attractive pictures all of which deserve a certain kind of "favorite". |
