That's not even the worst thing. I was there when a RL friend of mine was making his avatar, he didn't want to bother with the character generator at all and randomized everything. And this character is usually in the top 50 and always gets better ratings than Zimmy.

It's not impossible that the randomizer hit the proverbial jackpot.
Also, if your RL friend happened to choose, say, female Jin-Mei, then they might be benefiting from the number of participants who vote with their pants, the aesthetic value of the portrait be damned.
I can't say that I completely understand the tastes of the voters there, but two of the portraits that I think I really nailed are doing well.

I like most of the top 100, although maybe not in that particular (Affinity and Damia Gray are high on my list) order. There are a few that are sadly missing though like Alice Saki, Altrue and until recently Riot Girl. I think I prefer the old pre-reset (voted a bit more on it) list a bit more. |

Personally I dislike female characters with overly masculine facial features like... Uh..well...
And yeah, I know, I always get a lot of flack for the red shirt, but if it was good enough for Montgomery Scott then doggone it, it's good enough for me. If House played Eve: http://i.imgur.com/y7ShT.jpg |

Personally, I think the coolest looking portraits are the ones taken for Solhild and Sajuuk Brutor. I've always liked those two a lot. Death's Desire has a really cool portrait as well, because that character looks a lot like Death from The Sandman graphic novel series.

I enjoy the site but it still needs a bit of work.
For example, the current #1 Male Gallente Intaki is Eurydia Vespasian. EeVee is correctly marked as female, yet that particular list doesn't believe the label apparently. If House played Eve: http://i.imgur.com/y7ShT.jpg |

Hello everyone,
I know I haven't been posting in this thread for quite some time but that doesn't mean I stopped working on New Eden Faces project. If you haven't checked it out yet, a few days ago I did a partial UI overhaul to keep things fresh.
There is a "bug" in the system right now where characters are being matched to the same one or two people per each round. You probably have noticed that already. It has already been fixed but because I also did a very significant refactoring change to the entire codebase I am going to hold off from pushing the changes to the live website for now, until more testing is done.
Now I would like your hear your opinion on where should the next priority be for New Eden Faces. I have a few things that I would like to implement:
- Character "VS mode" where you can pit a character against another one. The difference between current voting system is you get to choose which character goes against another character. Only 1 fight per character can be active at any time. After 8 hours, one with the most votes is the winner.
- Stats page that shows total number of males, females, how many characters per each race, bloodline. Display a live history of all votes (who won, who lost). Because right now it's all transparent, you don't know who won against who, or when did that happen... Possibly some other other useful statistics that could be extracted from database. And of course pretty graphs will be part of the stats page!
- Scheduler to remove lowest ranking character each day. Another scheduler to reset all stats every 200 or 300 rounds?
- Character traits such as Attractive, Intelligent, Angry, Calm. User can select over a hundred different attributes from a drop down list. Can only cast one trait per character. Profile page keeps track of which traits have been casted for the character, as well as the # of times the same trait has been casted. For example Attractive (3), Intelligent (2), Admirable.
- Performance optimizations = make site more responsive, by using caching, less number of requests, minifying JS and CSS files.
And as always, if you have found a bug let me know so I could try to fix it. If you just keep quiet about it or whine "fix your broken ****" without explaining what the problem is (and yes that happened), I cannot fix it. I am a full-time student, with a part-time job and working on so many other projects at any given time, I simply do not have time to look for every possible bug or loophole in the website.
Thanks,

The site really needs more characters entered. Only 3464 characters are entered out of the hundreds of thousands available. A paltry sum, if you ask me. Tripling this amount would dissuade people from running through the list and up-voting or down-voting the characters of their choice. People shouldn't have that kind of luxury, but if more characters aren't added, then I guess things won't change. |

It's actually a good thing.
If you didn't look good then all the little dweebs wouldn't be down-voting you to improve themselves in the standings. These things are so easily manipulated by the hyper-competitive, Alpha male types that play this game that they will never be anything close to impartial.
It's too bad. A lot of people have put a lot of time into these sites only to have them gamed by the very people they took the time to make them for.
Kind of pathetic.

I wish I could write a script that will go through all forums and grab thousands of characters automatically, but unfortunately if I do that I will not be able to set character's gender since you need an EVE API key for that sort of information. So in the worst case scenario thousands for characters will have an undefined gender and won't be matched properly until people click on "Wrong Gender" button and then I re-assign gender manually myself. I could do that if others don't mind seeing incorrect gender matching for a short period of time.

Mr Epeen It has been a lot worse back in June causing a short-term drama. The site was being abused left and right. So far I haven't noticed any irregularities other than people's bad taste in good-looking avatars. Ariel Dawn (http://www.newedenfaces.com/characters/916857044) is not even in Top 100. And what happened to Female Sebeistor? They used to dominate the leaderboard. My avatar has never been in Top 10 before, so I assume this is due to the other 2 "fixed" avatars I am constantly being matched against which are most-likely significantly worse than Nova Kierra. Will release a fix for a proper character randomization shortly.

Fantastic site. I could spend hours just clicking through the portraits (I say could, I mean have).
I think you might want to take some kind of look at the ranking algorithm for the males vs female portraits. Seems the difference between individual female portraits is more pronounced and so they get higher win to loss ratios. But where you never put a male portrait against a female portrait you're ending up with male portraits very rarely getting into the overall ranking. |

I am aware of it. As far as correctness goes, there is nothing wrong with it. Top female character and top male characters have the same total number of votes (# of wins + # of losses). Male votes tend to be more distributed between wins and losses. Where female votes are more pronounced with higher wins, fewer losses.

What is the deciding factor for the ranking? Is it the Win-Loss ratio or the overall number of votes? Reason I'm asking is I added a character a while back, she has a ratio of 72.9% but less votes then most other characters. She still doesn't appear in any rankings, not even in the bloodline ranking.
Another thing I noticed, why is Ash'ale (not my character) No 1 in the Minmatar female ranking but not even in the top 100 overall? |

I also believe that there are factors like scars, piercings, monocles, facial tattoos and mohawks that work for male avatars that I vote for but do not end up in the top 100 male list. This is probably not helping them get in the top 100 since we are voting for very different factors. I think that in some ways the female avatars tend to have more clearer definitions on what is considered traditionally pretty. Just a speculation.
I am also convinced that many of the ranks are due to who you are paired up against. This is the first time in the sites three incarnation that Celeste has been number one, and I believe that part of it is due to being matched against Celeste Lovette (who isn't bad, but is a bit awkward with those lips and facial piercings) for most of this run. My other avatars are all ranked in a weird order too.
While I think that most of the top 100s are gorgeous I do miss Antares Rai, Damia Gray, Demeter Gray, Alice Saki, Riot Girl and a bunch of others who I also suspect are paired against strong avatars. On the other hand Nova Kierra Slave Tama and Yunnai who I always vote for are near the top and Sanya just broke into the list! |

To be honest, when a character like Miiral ends in the hall of shame (88 wins to 264 loses), it looks like the website scores work on the base of GIGO.
It doesn't tests who are the best avatars, rather it tests whether internet users are jerks. Shockingly, the answer is 'Yes, internet users are jerks'. The Greater Fool Bar is now open for business, 24/7. Come and have drinks and fun somewhere between RL and New Eden! |
