You've just cost me the price of new ink cartridges and high quality paper, I hope youre happy
Now, I was inspired by your nberness, and I think I should ask if you mind before I run off and put up some plans of my own... I thought I'd start small, with the caldari shuttle (since it's relatively simple.) It's harder than it looked to make the plan, but it's alot of fun.
So do you mind if I do some ships that you skip over/don't get to? -----

I would buy a subscription to E-On if it included paper models like the ones shown in the OP.
Oh wait, I _already_ subscribed to a year of E-On!!

Lots of replys again...! This is really cool, part of what makes EVE EVE. Thanks guys and girls! I'll try to answer some of your questions again.
Originally by: Bhaal That's nice work.
Did you use any CAD for creating the flat patterns?
Do you do this for a living, it looks professionally done!
Looks great!
Yeah, there's some CAD work in it, though not as much as I would like as I don't have access to the software. I have spent a good many years as a mechanical design engineer so the 3D and thinking in 3D experiences are from that. Suffice to say, I've been in contact with Zapatero about the details and wouldn't like to spoil his thunder.
I do some graphic design, layout and illustration part-time so yeah, kind of semi-pro in that respect. But not modelling, these things are firsts for me as well.
Originally by: Alanin i started with the plastic model, but think i'll have to make the paper one first to have a better look on this...
have some pictures, not gone far away now...
Nice one dude, if I had access to some of the materials and more time, I'd do some of this too.
Originally by: DynamoJoe Simply awesome man. Would you be offended if I tried to make one as well, but not out of paper?? Will post it when I get done.
Sure! I don't own the models, CCP does so anything you do must remain true to the original design. There's plenty of others doing the same!
Originally by: Gwarnina Wow, a new ship... And I'm not even done with my Rifter.
That Heron looks huge, btw - about 40cm tall?
Yep, it's around that - any smaller and the smaller parts would be next to impossible with my fingers. Plus I think it's about the same scale as the Rifter. I think.
Originally by: Crystal Kali The Heron is amazing! I'm guessing the blob-like Gallente ships would be too much of a headache to do Wink
Some of will be, but I assumed the Heron would be a stroll but each race I think will bring it's own problems. Keeping stuff square can be just as problematic. Those sails on the Heron tend to twist unless they're left to dry under a rather large book. The Gallente and Amarr will of course be my next subjects, in the interests of fairness (not in that order of course...)
Originally by: Oben Ardorad Very Happy You've just cost me the price of new ink cartridges and high quality paper, I hope youre happy Rolling Eyes

Oh yeah, sure go ahead! I'm not planning on having the monopoly on this stuff. In fact, I'm sort of planning a site to keep all of this and related materials on. I should get round to it around late April-time.
Originally by: Andromeda One Will there be any instructions soon, I have tryed the rifter two times and failed on both.(I do not have a create'iv mind so... pls let me know.Wink
Yeah. Instructions... The problem is that they're not as fun as creating the models themselves. I should have guessed really. I am thinking about them - just trying to think of the best way forward. I will issue some. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know or post em here.

Cliched response here, but it's the least I could do as you guys but a bucklet of effort in too. Thanks for the inspiration and cool source material!
Originally by: HippoKing i love you and want to have your babies ugh
Thats two declarations of love so far plus a positive comment from Avon. I'm doing well...

I'd love this, dunno what the implications would be tho. One for Zapatero and CCP I guess. ---

What is this....a Rifter for Ants! It's gotta be at least two or three times bigger than this...
Great model! I wish I had the patience. I barely have enough to mine. Can you make Megathron one?

Its been said hundreds of times so make this hundreds + 1.
These are awesome and I fully intend to try and build both. I'll throw in my $0.0002 (not quite worth 2 cents...):
Alot of requests have been made for Amarr/Gallente ships but I'm not sure how those will translate into paper. Any curves will become difficult at best and the quality will likely drop from what you've released so far. I wonder if it would be possible to build the curved sections with styrofoam blocks from a hobby store, then wrap them in some form of stretch/printable material. Air brushing would be an obvious possibilty, but breaks from the idea of printing the Eve textures in their final form. I can't come up with any ideas for this material but perhaps someone will read this post and have a solution.
I'd LOVE to see a reasonably simple ship like the Kestrel come next. Yeah, you've already done something Caldari, but the Kestrel will likely lend itself very well to this form of art, and the finished product will most likely be an equal or greater quality than the rifter and heron. I'm sure there are more Minnatar ships that could work as well. I'm curious to how the thin (sort a see through areas) of some of the Minmatar ships could be recreated.
A question that has been asked but not addressed (that I could tell) is what do you recommend for glue? Elmer's seems to be the glue of choice but I was curious for some feedback from the Man on this subject. Also, what are your thoughts on the website you are considering? A wiki format could lend very well to these kind of projects as the "tutorials" could be started by you and then expanded by other members of the community. I'd love to help you set this up if you need.
I hope you are able to find more time soon to work out a 3rd model, and some form of instructions on how to best build these. I can't wait to see what you come up with next.

Seriously smiffa, you have earned all the respect your getting, everyone has been *****ing about no EVE models, and while these are paper (still good IMHO specialy if you use the filler and make em a bit sturdier like in some suggestions in the thread), Youare the only one to truly get off thier ass, and figure out a way to bring us our models... Not for 10$, not for 15$, not even 40$, but for fecking free...
I don't think instructions are needed, the work you have already done is more than anyone should ever ask for... (but please do make em LOL).
Honestly, I was amazed with the rifter, but I am more amazed at your continued support of this great idea. I was half expecting this to be a one shot deal, never to come up again... But now I am truly hopeful that before long a nice gallente ship model (thorax?) will appear... I can only hope. BTW a punisher would be an awesome model if your doing Amarr next.
Galaxion > If you drove a car shaped like a thorax women would call you Demangel > Dude... I would call.. Demangel > wait that sounded g@y I bet. Galaxion > Just a bit.

Glue: The glue I used I bought a couple of years ago and have since removed the label . However, it's white in colour and dries to a clear finish so it's PVA glue. Not sure on the Elmer's stuff so I couldnt comment. Either way, something not too wet, not Pritt-Stik type, but something that isn't too wet and can be spread...
Site: When I get closer to the site thing (waiting for RL to calm down a little first) then yeah, I'll get in contact with you as a wiki sounds like a plan, at least for the instructions/tutorials.
Once again, thanks again everyone for you support and comments.

Great models! Very cool of you to make the patterns available too.
The Rifter photograph is terrible though! I second the call for a better picture without junk in the background and the washed out lighting.

Love both of these.
Printed my first one on too heavy paper (photo stock) doh!! But the reprint on lighter paper is easier to handle - just need to finish it.
Hope these links may help to people wondering what paper models are and how to work with paper. Linka (Nice tips for tyres and round things if you follow the link on the bottom about tyres - once youve mastered round objects its all easy from there) or Linkage (Nice intro to paper handling under tips and tricks)
Also any white glue is good to use - wood glue - UHU - Elmers Glue All - Aleenes etc ( the pros also say that waiting a minute or so for the glue to slightly cure helps it to stick better.)

I'd forgotten about these! I started building these very models a few years back but never got around to finishing them as I moved house. The glue and knife I'm using currently I bought to do these with.
Good find and some nifty tips. I'll upload some more shots of both models as I get the chance over the weekend.
