Oh, and a sticky on the cliffs would be pwn.
kthxbye.
Almost didn't respond to this as its tone is a tad "coad" for this forum section, but if you raise yer eyes a quarter inch to the sticky in this section, you'll see some "cliff notes", as well as some posts regarding getting better performance and such....and only a few pages long.
This thread was started back when EVE was NOT playable via linux/wine/cedega/mac/etc., and has been a rolling support section as things have improved over time, as well as changes to wine and cedega.
From a technical perspective, seeing the evolution of support for EVE is interesting in and of itself, as well as the groans and huzzahs as things finally started working.
As long as there are eve updates, cedega updates, wine updates, this thread will live as its a good place to look at the last 3-4 pages for answers.

Well, eve runs w/o any problems if you have techinician's cast of mind and had experience with wine. But (according to my experience) lots of ppl (eve-players) move to linux and just after OS installation want to install/launch eve. The main problem is (obviously) is lack of experience and old habit (even addiction) to windows-like only-gui-communication with os. And it's really hard to understand how it works and how it should be set up, especially in correct way (as example - eve runs w/o registry keys, but does not show its best)...
Back to the subject. I've noticed that eve removed voiceenabled=0 from prefs.ini... it seems to be done when last patch was applied. Now it uses some kind of autodetect or setting is stored somewhere else (hadn't found it in registry)?

Ok, it seems I solved my problem, now EVE is running as good as in Windows... The only problem is that I can't set multisample quality in advanced graphic settings. I could set antialiasing from the "nvidia-settings" but it seems I have to do it every time I enter in Kubuntu.

don't know...however. If you can run wine or cedega via puppy (and I suspect you can) and have the nvidia/ati binary video drivers, then I wouldn't see why not.

I test with wine under ubuntu 7.04 and Beryl. No issues. This looks like a sound card/driver issue.......and its my bet that you haven't gotten "voiceenabled=0" set. Without that, cedega will load, but corp/local chats don't show. Under wine you get a crash. Also, if you don't have arial.ttf copied into the /windows/fonts directory, you will definitely get nothing but a blackscreen as well.

I believe that's normal. HAL = Hardware Abstraction Layer, and it's what (I think) Wine uses in order to run 3D stuff off your video card.

I still need to figure smth out. There is a passage in your Guide which mentions
Quote: open key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\AppDefaults\ExeFile.exe\Direct3D (if it doesn't exist – create missing keys yourself through "new -> key" menu)
Now, when I enter regedit, I can click thru the menu as suggested by you, but I can find no Folder \AppDefaults in \Wine. Do I have to create it? Or is it possible, that the Version of wine did change, and by that the folders also changed? I'm using version 0.9.34-1.

Sorry for late answer, but i wasn't able to reply since my acc has been suspended for a while. Yea, you have to create all missing 'folders' (keys) manually. You've placed them in global wine directory. This will affect all applications launched under wine. Path mentioned by me - settings located there will affect any eve installation (or any process with Exe.File.exe executable file). Strings in this key won't do anything magical, just remove some glitches and boost performance a bit (if you have >64 mb video).
If you're getting less than 80% of fps you get in windows, time to deal with drivers and their settings (/etc/X11/xorg.conf)...

Nothing magical, tho, but at least making wine using the entire 128MB video memory ;) When I tried your path it wouldn't work, tho I'm pretty new to all this registry stuff and don't know if I put the keys right. However, actualy I'm using the proprietary driver from the NVidia Website, cause the Debiandriver's are borked under Testing-Distro. What do I have to watch generally, when configuring my xorg.conf? The graphic chip/card is recognized correct, the (correct) driver is installed..

Edited by: Kadesh Priestess on 16/07/2007 06:50:17 I'm using debian lenny too, and proprietary driver (with patched installer - since new .21 kernel has paravirtualisation enabled). Well, some sections that may be related to performance and useful all-in-all:
Originally by: xorg.conf ... Section "Module" Load "dbe" Load "extmod" Load "type1" Load "freetype" Load "glx" EndSection
Section "Extensions" Option "Composite" "Enable" EndSection ... Section "Device" Identifier <xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Driver "nvidia" ... Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "True" EndSection
Section "Screen" ... Option "NoLogo" "1" Option "DynamicTwinView" "False" Option "DamageEvents" "True" Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True" ... EndSection
Hope it won't kill your installation ;) otherwise you'll have to learn how to use console, vim etc to get pc working again. But nothing criminal in these options, so... Regarding registry options... take a look at screenshot, also glance at console. It works for me, so it's quite strange that you can't get it working...

Yeah, i'm running apache on linux installation only but today had to reboot into windoze, so sometimes that page can be not accessible. I've just given temporary link to estimate 'value' of miniguide... not as link to permanent hosting. And, anyway, no probs - personally, i don't like all these endless troubles with copyrights (maybe it's the reason why i'm using linux). But main flaw of this way is the fact that content changes from time to time and i'd like to have full access to both russian and english versions. And it's originally written using bb-formatting, so it may be placed somewhere here on board, i guess it's the best place for it.

this might seem a bit odd to some people, but i run eve in windowed mode, as is with wine eve doesnt have any window borders.
if i set wine to use a desktop of the desired resolution, that works great up until i want to run two copies of eve.
i load the second copy and it loads it into the same desktop space, as yet i dont know how to switch between them. Also, i dont know how to split them so they are their own entities on the taskbar..
any ideas or suggestions are more than welcome :)

Well, it should be pretty simple to control eve w/o borders. Most window managers use alt for window move, so try pressing alt and dragging window holding it (click on any spot, it doesn't matter at which). Also, set some hotkeys for window minimizing/maximizing. If it's done, it should be pretty convenient to manage multiple accounts...

Well that's pretty odd: I'm using Debian / Lenny as Distro and Synaptic keeps telling me wine 0.9.34 is the latest version available. I'll try to keep my system updated via Package Manager and only use manual installation if it's really necessary. Anyone else having this problem? Maybe a wrong package source?

Edited by: Kadesh Priestess on 19/07/2007 10:47:46 It's the latest version adapted for lenny by debian developers. You have to add wine repositary manually, edit /etc/apt/sources.list (sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list, obviously you have to have access to sudo command), adding following lines:
Originally by: sources.list # Wine <wget -q http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/387EE263.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -> deb http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt etch main deb-src http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt etch main
Then, register that repository with command in <>. Update repository index (update manager, or 'update' button in synaptic). Also note that sometimes it takes some days for wine devs to build debian packages (with .41 it's the case, was released 5 days ago, but debian packages are still missing). But you always have option to compile it yourself ;)

@ Moriiko
Create a second user on your system for the second eve account. You will need to reinstall eve in the second user's home directory and then launch it from there while logged in as the second user.
I like to create separate users for each and every windows program I install. Keeps them from touching each other and makes it easy to uninstall.

I create separate launchers using the following command for each launcher:
wine explorer.exe /desktop=1,1280x800 /home/"user"/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/CCP/EVE/eve.exe
wine explorer.exe /desktop=2,1280x800 /home/"user"/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/CCP/EVE/eve.exe
You can change the initial desktop rez in that command to whatever is appropriate. EVE will change the size of the window when launched to whatever it is set at in 'settings'. When you change the rez in EVE, that desktop window will resize.
By using separate launchers you can also point to different EVE installations.
By using this method (creating desktop shortcuts and using the launcher tab from there to put the above listed commands in), you will have "bordered" EVE, which are fully movable.
If you take a look at my sig link you will see the end result of using the launchers.
