Originally by: Alexx Stardancer okay, I've read the latest pages of this thread, and it looks like people are getting some successes. I just switched to linux because my Windows OS crashed and everyone I know tells me linux is better. I don't know anything about it, just took the plunge. What I would like to know is if anyone would please spell out for me what to do to try to get this game running. I am now running SUSE 10.1, I've downloaded wine and some free versions of cedega. If I were knowledgeable and read this post I'd be rolling my eyes at the newb. but I would really like to make this work. thank you in advance, Alexx
If you don't know anything about it, your best bet is to use the trial version of Cedega, decide you like it, and pay the registration fee.

I did some tests with multiple clients yesterday and couldn't find any problems when running both clients in their own desktops.

Last night EVE slowed to a crawl so I restarted the client and after logging in the main window was rendering inside the small login window. Enabling a virtual desktop in winecfg didn't help. Neither did reinstalling EVE in a fresh ~/.wine directory. I don't know which client version I had but I just tried installing the optional patch and nothing changed.
after logging in
pressing ESC
Was there a client update last night that broke wine support?

you should give us a little bit more information so we can help you
system, distro, wine/cedega/crossover...
do you have fonts in other apps like notepad, winecfg or regedit? (those apps are included in wine)

Has anyone downloaded and tested the wine 0.9.29 release, looks like there are a lot of new fixes that should have some benefit to framerates etc. I've downloaded it but am waiting on an OK before I go ahead and install it seeing as 0.9.28 is reasonably functional (with the El***ER patch)

Hey all,
I'm running Fedora Core 6, kernel 2.6.19(-1.2895.fc6), AMD Athlon XP 2600+, 1.5GB RAM, GeForce FX 5600. I tried both the wine rpm and building 0.9.29 from git with the patch from http://elfe.mine.nu/eve/linux/ and although both work relatively well (playable), they both leak memory like mad leading to a lock-up of the game in about 10 minutes..
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Here's the same thing again.. doesn't look like the above exception had anything to do with it, since it didn't occur this time. So, here's what I've got:
1263842007.01.21 02:20:51:537tasklet <bluepy.TaskletExt object at 0x07A10678> woken up 8350s late

Note the number of "seconds" late compared to the actual change.. so I propose the problem started at around 02:20:49, which seems reasonable. And that's about when I noted the game slow to unplayable.. So here's the log for that area of time:

29 pages, wow :D haven't read them all so sorry if its been covered.
I'm using a dual boot system unbuntu 6.10 and winXP and trying to get eve to run with wine. I have eve installed on the windows partition and it mounted in linux. I have installed wine - and i've actually got the game to load!!! \o/ however, the keyboard focus is wrong, so when I try to type into the login box, it types into the concle insteed. So I can't log on. Anyone know how to fix this?
I got a copy of Winex CVS, not paying for the comerisal one, but haven't trouble installing it. I build it ok, but when i try to install:
technosites@JulianL:~/Desktop/Tars and Stuff/winex/tools$ sh wineinstall wineinstall: 100: function: not found wineinstall: 102: Syntax error: "}" unexpected technosites@JulianL:~/Desktop/Tars and Stuff/winex/tools$
any ideas there?
Many Thanks, Technog33k

winex/cedega cvs is not worth the cpu time to compile anymore as transgaming isn't porting any 3d stuff into it
so use the original wine, cedega or crossover

Same here, but manged to get past. just type my password in a tempo txt file, then paste it in the right field :) But even with my prefs.ini paste from my win partition, just got a small screen not centered from the game, and impossible to hit esc to switch to another resolution. Just got to kill X then restart X Any solutions ?

Edited by: El***ER on 22/01/2007 19:09:09 see some posts above for the password issue (arial.ttf is your friend)
to the mini char selection: use the latest patch for wine or try alt+enter
currently the game freezes at about 80% when entering game as x (the x mouse is still movable but the eve mouse is stuck and an err is reported at the terminal - just alt tab to the terminal and CTRL+C to kill Eve) the crash seems to be somewhat related to the vivox integration and hard to follow as eve doesn't fully crash
edit: uh forgot to mention that the wine app db now has votes per version and reset the current vote counts = go to the wine app db and vote (again) pls

I got something similar to this due to a corrupted texture file recently (after lagging out in a DED - eek). I ended up cleaning up all the recent files, but then hit the partial screen thing. The alt-enter thing took care of that, but I was worried there for a while till i ran across the solution. A benefit to the problem is I ended up resizing the desktop up to 1280 x 1024 while floundering around. There¦s still a memory leak around somewhere as after a few hours everything still slows down. It takes longer now with more memory installed though. I tend to play without sound as well, seems more stable that way (and is noticeably faster). I¦m running the ***505 client, wine 0.9.29 (patched of course - thanks again for the constant updates). Small stuff: The lens flare effects seem odd particularly with the mining lasers, planet textures tend to wander around, though roids seem rock-solid. There are the odd CTD on jumping, and a once in a while drag and drop stops responding (think these are related to mem leak, as it seems more frequent with longer connection times).

Beginners guide to getting eve in linux.
Im running Ubuntu 6.10 edgy with the downloaded binary version 0.9.29 Wine with no patches.
To get it working you need to do the following.
Install Ubuntu 6.10
Install the nvidia binary glx driver
Set your screen/ desktop resolution to something high 1280x1024 works good
Download wine 0.9.29 using the package manager
Run winecfg and set the following options: Windows version 2000 Graphics, untick allow directx apps to stop mouse....., tick, allow the window manager....., tick emulate a virtual desktop and set it to 1024x768 Virtex shader,,, hardware Tick, Allow pixel shader
copy / move the eve setup files to the .wine/c_drive folder and install eve using wine, something similar to wine c:\\eve_setup.exe
install eve into c:\ccp
THE MOST IMPORTANT PART
To ensure that the game is displayed properly you need to copy your eve\cache folder from windows to the .wine\c_drive\eve\cache folder.
to run eve use wine c:\\ccp\\eve\\eve.exe
Good luck and i hope this helps. I have only been using linux for 2 days now so if i can do it im sure most eve players can :)
Cmon guys stick with the open source and support Wine

it was the graphics driver. now i got fixme:d3d:IWineD3DImpl_GetDeviceCaps Caps support for directx9 is nonexistent at the moment! this is the general error i get in the terminal when EVE loads. everything is fine until i get to the character creation screen. at this point the screen is tiny (showing only partial area of the screen ) and the cursor has a ghost cursor which is the 1 i have to try and select with. further more the dxsetup files have appeared on drive_c. this is very hard on noob linux users :)

The trick here is to:
open winecfg, set the virtual desktop to 1024x768.
Start eve, login...the screen will expand to your setting in prefs.ini, bigger than the virtual desktop.
Cheers!

The partial desktop thing usually corrects with alt-Enter which toggles fullscreen/windowed mode. Windowed mode is kind of broken for us, though sometimes it works. Don't worry about those Caps (no Caps support etc) errors, throws them constantly here, but game doesn't crash
