It's with great sadness and a heavy heart that I must report the death of DarkElf.
After noticing him not log on for a while I started to call and text his phone wondering where he was, this morning I got a text message from his brother.
At this point all I can tell you is that he was in the shower and his heart stopped, he had no known medical condition.
DarkElf was my best friend in EVE and out of game, he will be missed every day by me.
My thoughts are with his family, he will be forever missed by myself and all of Veto corp.

DarkElf was a lovely guy, who was always full of enthusiasm. At any time this would be awful, but at 26 this happening is a complete tragedy.

It's really hard to know what to say.
Dark Elf was a friend and mentor to all who play this game. He is one of the funniest guys I have had the pleasure of knowing despite never having met him OOG...which I regret.
He is the ONLY person who could make me laugh with his unique versions of "LOLZ"  .

Darkelf was a very big presence on the forums, always there with infomative posts, or just a good input in any subject, never did you see pointless smack or troll threads from him.
I always enjoyed seeing his views on subjects as they come from a solid pirate.
He will be missed by the whole eve community.

I played with Darkelf for the last 3 years in EVE. We were in Order of the Silent Shadow together (OOTSS) and left formed Arcana Imperii Ltd. he was one of the founding members and a director. We were in E-R together and pirated a many a day on our alts (DJ LOUD was his alt). It is sad today i lose a friend of almost 3 years. We were continents away but i felt like i have lost a brother.

I also knew DarkElf from the old OOTSS days and when we were in AIL together. I flew with him for a long time and was proud to call him my friend. The person he was will never be forgotted. My heart is deeply saddened by his passing.

I never really knew DarkElf, barring the odd comment on the forums and a couple random times on various vent servers. However in a game where so often people try to beat down on as many people as possible for fun he remained above that. His posts on C&P were exceptional, always willing to take time to help others or explain a viewpoint with clarity and at times a stunning neutrality not often seen around here.
My condolences to the Veto pilots who have no doubt lost a good friend. Dark Elf - you will be missed.

I am truly lost for words. He was 26 - this is truly tragic.
DE / Paul had the most outstanding personality I have ever seen. He lived life to the fullest, made time for everyone and is simply the most genuine person I have had the honour of knowing. This may just be a game of internet spaceships, but after speaking with someone on Vent, and knowing them for nearly a year the loss felt is extroadinary even though you have never met them. I have never heard him say a bad thing about anyone, and he had an ability to see the best of any situation.
I am truly saddened. The Veto family, and everyone who has ever known DE has lost someone we were very lucky and honoured to have known.

I had the pleasure and the honour of flying with DE, back in OOTSS and then AIL. He was such a lovely guy, would do anything for anyone. He gave me my very first Raven in fact, a ship I still have to this day (nearly 3 years later).
I am deeply saddened by his death, and hope he rests in peace. I'll miss you Elf, I really will.

Very saddened to hear of DarkElf's passing. It was a complete shock and although I had only crossed paths with him on the forums and that only a bit, I found him engaging and informative, and I know he was a respected player, member of Veto. and PVPer.
I know I'll miss seeing his posts. My sincerest condolences to Veto. and to DarkElf's family and friends.

Darkelf was one of the best personalities and pvpers I have ever played with in any game.

Condolences to his family and his corp. I only meet him through some forum discussions, seemed like a very friendly and intelligent person and from the other posts I can see that was the case.
The fact the he was taken away from his family and friends at the early age of 26 years brings a tear to my eyes, that is just plain wrong and I can only feel a great sympathy for the people who knew him.
Rest in peace DE, from the nice way you acted on the forums I can only belive you are very respected in real just like you have been here for your good inputs.

I remember my first encounter with DarkElf very well - Ore Mongers still lived in Costolle (Verge Vendor) back then and Samirol (in a domi) was chased by DarkElf (also in a domi, but with t2 ogres iirc). DarkElf had a couple of wingmen but attacked Samirol alone (when I came in my Caracal). I engaged and we both lost (me and Sam), but he was a really good sport about it, when Samirol was hitting structure I stuck and fought and he was really cool. Went on in a convo (me sitting in a pod at the star gate) and him in his domi.
After that I've spoken to him on several instances, back then he was in that... stripper corp, and I tried to negotiate a NAP between the two of us, and he told me it wouldn't happen and like "We'll see eachother in space".
Since then I've had some convos with him, and of course over the forums he always was very respectful to me. My impressions of him is that he was a damn good guy who got an undeserved fate.
My and my corps respects to him, his family, and his EVE-family Veto-corp.
May I suggest the "missing man" formation? (basically a V with the lead wing leader spot empty).

I first met dark elf back when i re-started the game when he was hunting around domain in AIL. He ganged up with me with his vengeance, helped me kill some rats then jumped me. In the ensuing year i flew several times both with him and his alt and he will be sorely missed, an all around good guy to have at your back. Seems so sudden its a bit hard to take in.

I never got to talk with DarkElf...closest we got I think was exchanging some ammunition a time or two or passing in local. But DE was a cornerstone of the experience here at Eve, even if it was just reading his threads and being 'victim' either to his witty replies or his guns in game.
The world, both in-game and out, is a lesser place for his passing. My heartfelt sympathies and condolances to DE's family, friends, and the greater Veto community.

Well, I don't know what to say. I am always a bit skeptical about internet deaths, I've been fooled once by a twisted practical joke, and once by someone who I thought was my friend (from another game) who just wanted a dramatic exit from my guild/eq2.
That isn't here nor there though. I feel that DE, the presence he was on this forums, and in eve, wouldn't do something like that.
I'll be frank. I don't believe in god, or a colorful happy afterlife. What I do believe (and know) is that people who are close to us remain with us. They change who we are, and in turn, they become part of us, which is then passed on to others in our lives. DE was the kind of person I gather that touched a lot of people, so he lives on in many of us.
For my own part, I will certainly miss the guy on these forums. It won't be the same place without him.

Ive known Elf/paul since OOTSS and Ail and been a regular wingman to him and his alt "DJ" while in DTS the world has lost a TOP guy !!! Eve community has lost a great Player and friend to many,and he will be missed greatly,

Ah, maybe. I don't know the OP, but maybe it was an attempt to interject a little eve-o humor to a somber occasion. The kind of thing that happens at wakes, ya' know.
People deal with death, particularly of someone in a close knit community like eve in funny ways. Its sometimes hard to come to grips with certain things, like people die, and nobody gets out alive.
Then again, maybe he IS just an asshat of the highest order.

I never knew the man in game, but at work I love to lurk on the forums and I really did enjoy his posts, I feel we had a very similar mindset.
As a memorial I think it would be cool if all his friends in game got together in tech I frigs and just had a fine free for all in his honour.

Just got the word that a truly awesome friend and mentor in this game and out of it pasted away. I don't think there are any words that can describe how much DarkElf will be missed by those of us that loved him dearly and those that loved to hate him in game. He was awesomely funny and had a heart of gold the size of the moon, who would do anything in game or out for a friend. My best wishes and prayers go out to his family. But even in this trajedy, those of us who knew him best and were lucky enough to have him call us his friends will always have the memories.

I have been away from the game for almost a month now, when my cell rang at work. I didn't know what to say then and I have even less of an idea what to say now.
I knew Dark for almost 3 years. We fought along side each other, against each other. No matter where we found ourselves in the game we never let it affect our friendship.
I know that he wouldn't have wanted so much sadness at his loss. He wasn't that type. No matter how bad things got he would always poor another drink, have another laugh.
If you knew Dark, share one of the many crazy events you found yourself in flying by his side. Remember him with a laugh and a smile.
The irony is that we actually had the opportunity to talk about what we would want/do if one or the other passed away. Many years ago when we were in OOTSS one of our corp members passed away. It was much less sudden, he had a long term terminal illness (so we all knew it would happen eventually). Dark named his Archon after the pilot because we said we would before he passed.
I never really imagined I would be posting in this thread. I won't say goodbye because I would like to think maybe our paths will cross again at some point in time.
Fly safe until then Dark.

The shower can be a killer, I had a friends dad die in the shower also, don't shock the body with extreme temperatures. His dad went into the shower after a sauna session.

I don't know what to say. It's just shocking and horrible to lose someone so unexpectedly at a young age like that. I always say that if I go suddenly like that to be happy that there was no suffering; I've seen plenty of it.

I came in on the end of the DarkElf Era in AIL, but I got to know him well in the intervening times. AFU...DTS...we're all devistated. We flew with you, we killed with you, and (once or twice) we died with you. We even webbed, scramed, and bumped you on several occasions to keep you from flying faction ships out to play with the Amarr Navy. I can honestly tell you that you were one of the few pilots in Eve that Hicks never wanted to have a round with (and having honestly told you that, I'll be getting an extremely angry phone call in the morning). He called me on my cell at work to tell me the news.....and we cried together. (Insert Angry Call #2.....here.)
So now I sit here...drinking the most unholy combination of two of the most disgusting substances I can ever think of, and all in your honor, Paul. You loved your Red Bull and Vodka above all else...no other drink is fit to toast your legacy, much less your friendship. We will miss you more than anyone will ever know. We would have a rampage in your honor, but everywhere we turn you have friends. So, we'll settle for holding a memorial service for you in Goinard. If someone would be so kind as to come forward with a frozen corpse of Elf, we would very much like to inter it in a can anchored in one of the belts in Goinard alongside a large supply of exotic dancers. He never went anywhere without one...why should now be any different? Let Goinard and the rest of Eve know and forevermore remember who they lost, and count themselves lucky to have had him.

What can I say.. I'm fairly new to this game but these news really struck me silent.
DarkElf was one of the first guys who I really remembered from the forums during my first months, and I'm glad I also managed to see the legend himself once in the game.
He was flying around a gate in some lowsec system when our newbcorp fleet op passed by on our way to the eve gate.

Just wanted to say what a top bloke DE was. spoke to him many times in game and on vent a couple of times. I remember he had had a few drinks on one occasion and so had i, he kept doing impressions of mr burns. which in my condition i found hilarious.

My most sincere condolences to his family, friends, his mates in Veto, and to this community. Needless to say itĘs a huge loss to all who knew him, or like me, put a lot of stock into his comments and suggestions. I know I have a stack of papers IĘve printed off with many of his little in game pearls of wisdom and ship setups he was so kind to share. Reading over many of these comments makes me wish I knew him personally.
My thoughts and prayers are with all who are grieving this terrible loss.

Never met him in space (fortunately for me i guess) but i always read his posts.
Very sad to hear that, and i really can't express my sadness.
He is in a better place now among the stars he loved to fly among.

only ever had one run in with him.we caught site of his pilgrim 170km from us while we were killing a cyclone a in belt.The cyclone was at half armour and we were really panicing that we were going to be had (we were only in af's) all the time screaming on vent "kill it quick before dark elf gets us." I got a convo off him afterwards turns out he was 35km off us as we looted the wreak and got the hell out of dodge.
RIP I'm sure you will be missed greatly by VETO and the eve community.

Heartbreaking..
Darkelf was one of the best guys ive known.. i met him in eve and got to know alot about him in real life.. we were planning on meeting up because we dont live to far away and going out for a drink.. Why do bad things happen to good people.
He is my hero, everything he did i wish i could only follow.
He will be missed, really heartbroken to hear he is gone :( top guy not many like that out there.

I think someone mentioned earlier about having people "contribute" to DarkElf's bounty in memory of him. I think that this is a great idea so I would like to formally ask for everyone that feels inclined to put a few isk on his "head". We have already gotten his bounty up to over 1.4 bil (making him #1 I believe). It would be pretty cool if we could solidify that position for all time. Also, thanks to everyone for the amount of support that the eve community has shown in this teribble time. I know it has helped me deal with his loss by knowing how much he really ment to everyone.

I fought against DE when he was in A-I-L when I first joined the game (with another character) and was in 9th fleet, later when some of us formed TBSV and we moved back to the Aeschee area DE was a regular and welcome opponent. Now I am in Sni.ggerdley and Blue to Veto he always had a friendly wave or a few words as our paths crossed.
His posts on the forums where always constructive, not something many of us can say.
My thoughts go out to his real life family and friends. and also to his Eve family in Veto.

I added to that bounty and I plan on adding to it continuously as I have spare cash. ^^ Darky was a great guy...I first found out by reading "DarkElf I'll always remember you :(" in a friend's msn personal message. I desperately asked "he just quit the game, right?" only to get a link to this post. I haven't said anything because I've been so busy lately I've only been able to glimpse at what's been said. Today I took the time to read many of the posts here and I believe DE would be happy knowing he made such an impression on everyone.
Isn't Veto working with CCP to get a monument setup in Goinard for him?? That'd be amazing. ^^ Have something about the #1 bounty in there so players can donate to help us keep him up there as a legend. Not that he needs any help...

I dont beleive ive ever talked to DE.. but knowing about somebody in the local eve community passing fills most of us with sadness. Im one of those.
I dont really agree with the showing of emotions through in game actions tho. I understand and comprehend the idea of 'adding to bounty, making in-game memorial' but in all truth.. what does a pixel memorial really hope to accomplish when it comes down to the ones that are closely and personally affected by this..
It is just my opinion tho and i only mean the best.

I have never met him, never heard of him untill I was looking at a post which spoke of DE's passaway.
To die at 26 cannot be any less than great tragedy. I can only imagine the loss and suffering of DarkElf's families, friends and whatnot.
I offer my deepest of condolences. May he rest and peace and fly amongst the stars. This topic have saddened me, even my heart is touched.

I just heard the news from Commander Wingpop yesterday that Elf has left us, I met elf over a year ago when I first started out in OOTSS with my old charecter "YinandYang". I hadn't had chance to speak to him since my return and sadly it appears I never will get that chance. He was a good PVPer, a fine pirate and a nice guy.
My thoughts are with his family.

Never talked to him in person, but I had a great pleasure reading his post in the fitting section. He looked like an open-minded and gentle guy, never calling people names or laughing at them.

While I only had the opportunity to speak with him once, he came across as a very down to earth kinda guy, willing to help with anything he could.

I'm not the best with words but I have had and will always have nothing but respect for veto and its members. DarkElf was a true forum ***** of class and always took the time to help people on the forums. Every post I had the liberty of reading showed true and great character. While I've never had the privilege of flying with DE, nor did I know him well, in fact other then me enjoying his forum posts I really didnt know him but i felt like i did, he will be missed. My dearest condolences to his Family, Friends, and of course to Veto for loss of such a fine pilot.

Eve is most certainly about us bunch of weirdos and miscreants that make it up...And Dark Elf was a shining example of both. I honestly would actively would seek out his posts on setups and the like, as there has been little a finer pilot to fly the great space of EvE.
In fact my first mega I ever lost was to him :) He will be sorely missed by many in the Eve community...the pain of his passing will be felt Eve-wide. And especially for his comrades in Veto my heart goes out to you guys.

Somtimes EVE gives the impression that we all are immortal because we mainly deal with the characters of the game.

Firstly as a person who has experienced death in the family, and death of friends, I know it is painful. However I have read the posts in this forum. I have seen the tribute video and audio files posted, and I have to say that this is the saddest thing I've ever seen. Now I don't say sad as in grevious, I mean sad as in pathetic. Go ahead, brand me as a villan for having the balls to say what so many want to say but fear the flames.
We can laugh when in WoW somebody crashes an online funeral because thats nerdy and abnormal, but when Verone makes a sappy tribute where he's reading some speech off a piece of paper with the background music from Gladiator or something, thats not nerdy or overboard. When people post video clips where they can hear his voice and oooo and aaaah at some guy that played a game on the internet thats not nerdy or overboard. When people make posts that for once in their life they ran through spellcheck and write as if they're from old England to pay their respects in a BIG way to a guy they've never heard of or spoken to once, thats not nerdy or abnormal.
Firstly, I've met Dark_Elf in Amamake. He had no impact on my life whatsoever, I spoke with him briefly in which he said nothing groundbreaking that forever changed my life. He wasn't a bad guy, polite enough, but to me just some dude over the internet.
Secondly, like Karlemgne, I do not put much credence into "internet deaths". I don't know if he is dead or not nor will I assume. I will however refrain from vomiting in my mouth at the amount of sappy fake horsecrap people are posting. I find it hard to believe that Veto members are in real life pain sitting there unable to eat, sleep, or do well in school because their internet friend "died".
If he actually is dead then I send my respects to his FAMILY, not his internet friends.
And if he isn't dead and this is some attention grabbing scheme by Veto or Dark_Elf himself then may whoever is responsible forever rot in hell.
On top of that how about leaving tributes and commentaries about that person to people who actually know him. I know that if I die I wouldn't want a bunch of internet people telling 200,000 other internet people who I was or at least who they THINK I was.

First off, I want to give my condolences to Hussman, Verone, Veto, and everyone that knew DarkElf. I feel your loss. I will in no way deface this thread, as its about RL and good people. Again, sorry for your loss.
FZN is totally with you guys, and will always be. Dimitry will be dealt with in a timely manner, and in no way are his views those of FZN. I just wanted to clearify that. Sorry if that was brought about in any wrongful and distasteful manner.

In the future, if anyone has a problem with something I've said on these forums, or in game, you should have the courage to come to me directly.
I do not appreciate it when people can muster up the courage to approach others in regards to what *I* have said either here, or elsewhere, but not have the courage to approach ME. Personally, I think you'd find I'm a reasonable human being, with a great deal of empathy for what others feel, or find offensive, especially in cases like this thread.
However, trying to play little games behind my back goes a long way to erasing any sort of good will I might have had for you, if you'd approached me directly.
As for the content of this thread, I stick by everything I've said. Again, repeating what I've already said here, I never know what to think of internet deaths. There have been two occasions in my interweb life where someone I've known, and talked to (not just knew passingly) have tried to fake their death, and been caught... once by me.
Having said that, knowing DarkElf as I did only through the forums, he never struck me as a kind of guy who would do such a thing. Accordingly, I offer my condolences to his family, his friends, and those who played eve with him.
I am not a religious man, and don't believe in a happy afterlife with angels and singing. What I do think though, is that people who we know, and who we love, make impressions on us. In fact, they change who we are, so that others, in a way, become part of us. In this way, I feel that we all live on, and in turn part of us is transmitted by everyone who we know.
I will also stick to my assessment of the human condition. We all grow old, and we all die. Nobody, no matter how much they try to deceive themselves, makes it out alive. Eventually, everyone we've ever known, our friends, or siblings, parents, children, and grandchildren suffer the same fate. In that very real way, no one is left to "care" that we were ever here.
However, because I think we all live on through those who we did know, and part of us is transmitted to everyone we are close to, we in some sense, survive the demise of all that we, in our life, knew.
I will also, emphatically, tell you how *I* feel about the memorials, the signatures, the flaming, the constant public displays of mourning, and even the going behind people's backs because you have a problem with *my* opinion about this incident. I think that it is in poor taste, and the recent actions of some of you only solidify (see above) this feeling.
These are MY opinions, and MY opinions only. If you disagree, then say so. Don't want to do it publicly? I understand. So convo me, eve-mail me, MSN me, or whatever, but at least have the courage to do that. This is MY last word on the matter, and I will not be posting on this thread again.

I would also like to say something similar to what Karl said, I had the backbone to stand up and say what I believe in this thread despite the possible flames, and instead of addressing me my CEO was contacted of course in hopes of getting me booted. Frankly I don't see it happening nor do I care. My belief's stand more importantly with me then any ingame corporation. I have already said what I believe and see no more reason to push it.
I can appreciate people being upset with my opinion but it remains just that, my opinion, and I believe the commercialisation of someone's death is in VERY poor taste, whether intentional or not. As I said before, I give my respects to the people who knew him in real life as they know his true character and would truly feel the REAL sense of loss. However I doubt that the people who knew him ingame are truly "shaken to their core" and as such should not try to pry sympathy from the EVE playerbase, again whether intentional or not.
I'll say once more, my opinions are my opinions, and I'd also highly advise others, including my own CEO to not make threats against me idle or not.

People deal with loss in very different ways and your assumption that the member of our corp we lost was a member ONLY of an online gaming community is wrong on a fundemental level.
A lot of the UK roster of our corporation are out of game friends and as such we have a very tight social circle that has developed both in and outside of Eve, DarkElf was part of that.
I've known your CEO for a long time, since he also experienced a similar loss in fact. We have a lot of respect for eachother and keep in contact outside of Eve when we can. I spoke to your CEO purely because of the fact I've had absolutley no urge to interact with you after the pure drivel you posted in this thread. Personal opinion or not, backbone has nothing do do with it, there's this thing called commom sense that tells us all there's a time and a place for everything.
The issue is not that you've brought your opinion here, or the fact your sidekick from the Malevolant has done the same.
The issue is that with this character and the your previous when you were a member of The Black Fleet, time and time again you've gone out of your way to flame or make attacks on our corp and it's members for no apparent reason. It's obviously not a part of the character, but the player say at the keyboard that seems to have an issue with either myself, my corporation, or both.
Yet again you've used something that's been posted on Eve-O, no less the real life death of a corpmate, to attempt to cause a scene and belittle and troll our members.
Yourself and your sidekick are the perfect defenition of the fact that anonymity on the internet turns someone one would normally consider a level headed individual into a completely desensitized and disrespectful asshat.

All I can say is, that I have not known DE in eve itself, not in battle nor in space traveling. But instead, I had the pleasure and honor to read C&P where he spent his spare time when he was working, or bored in home, and while there, he showed a tremendous intelligence, and in sense, he is famous of that.
And for one thing which I can be sure is, that all those individuals who have been reading or writing in Crime and Punishment cannot deny the fact, that you will be missed by all of us.
I will drink for your memory. and deep condolences for your family. both Ingame and out.

WOW what a shocker, I have know Dark Elf sice OTSS and AIL as well. he was one of the best guys I knew in the game. 2 of my top three moments involved DE.
#1 Dark Elf flying his nightmare totally drunk actually sounding like some sort of Elf... and half of AIL chasing him down 20 minutes and finally webbing him trying to force him to dock his Nightmare! Good Times.
#2 of course was "Singing ransoms"

Was just searching the forums for old friends and came upon this.
Darkelf was a well respected, all round nice guy who just liked to pvp (a lot).
He knew his Eve stuff well and was great to have in AIL gangs.
You will be missed pal :(
