But I found a problem I didnt have before this patch. Yes, I updated eve client before 4am. Its just that, now, when I insert a cd on my dvd-rom drive, it plays for a few seconds and then PC crashes, doesnt reboot, just crashes. Tried to do the same procedure four time, all the same. Was playing an avi file (one of the ones downloaded from this site), opened it on Windows Media Player and also on BSPlayer. Both made the PC crash.
Any ideas on how to solve this problem?
P.S.- its not the optical drive at all. Just crashed again without any particular reason.
Is there any other way to bump this? Has anyone complained about the same issue before?
Uninstalled eve, downloaded new full build (new graphics one). So far everything seems to be ok. Lets see...

I am running XPPro SVpk2 on sata drives mirror raided, confirmed boot.ini file is missing. The pc boots fine ,which is odd M/soft os are not usually that forgiving, and tested pretty much most functions and it seems stable however as a precaution I reapplied a backup copy. So you lot out there who are complaining at CCP, give it a rest. Its always up to you to keep backups of your important data/system files. No software is ever 100% perfect, If you cannot maintain such simple precautions you deserve all you get.

All I can say is... after being pulled through the mud for 2 months on a petition that should have ended my way... only to wake up to a computer that will not turn on, I am ****ed! What reason would ANY game have of looking at/editing/ or otherwise the BOOT.ini file. Now Im going to be paranoid about everything I install. Hell next time it might just wipe the damn hard drive. The fixes mentioned do work, but its still a huge hassle and everyone may have different boot.ini's if you multi boot. I was about to reformat and loose a lot of my stable system setup. Thank god I had bluesnews to tell me about this. CCP should send out an email to all accounts with this.
Forshame CCP we should get some sort of reimbursement for this...

Karma for nerfing my carrier. Can't imagine what will happen when you guys nerf the fighters too. (smile)
But, seriously, good luck to all the guys at CCP. You've got a great product. Thanks for all you do.
And to all you noobs out there: Never install applications to your system partition. It's just not a smart thing to do.

Strangely enough, I upgraded my client via the patcher from WinXP SP2 within that window and my boot.ini is fine. The only thing I can possibly think of is if perhaps it was not effected because I dual boot Vista and there are non-standard entries in the boot.ini file? The only discrepancy I can really think of. Technically it shouldn't matter, but who knows. ------------------------------------------- "What's it like being a turtle?" "It's a lot like being a walking house that eats lettuce." Woke, up, booted my system. Everything seemed fine.
I read the notice on the EVE loader page and checked my system and discovered no boot.ini file. There is a backup boot.ini file, in my system folder, though (don't know if that matters).
My questions are:
1. Since my computer booted do I have nothing to worry about? 2. If not, is it okay if I copy the boot.ini backup file and place it on the C: drive? The date on the backup file is December 2006.. don't know if that matters.

Well heres my take on the situation.
1) The person responsible for deployment of this should be shot, in public.
2) Every person on eve in school should be given a 1 year subscription for free.
3 ) The person responsible for making code to do anything outside of the CCP folders should be shot, in public.
4) The shootings are necessary because CCP has done irreparable harm to students out there and their parents are going to take it out on them.
I find it hard to beleave this has happened, CCP has really screwed up this time, This will cost CCP, bigtime, I for one will be considering leaving the game for good. This is for the following reasons.
1) Solidarity towards the population that cannot recover from this (and they represent a very large group +40%)
2) The cost to CCP will effect the quality of the game, CCP may never recover.
3) If CCP decides to do nothing for the affected, They don't deserve my business.
Not good CCP, Not good at all, You have very possibly killed the game.

http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=651679&page=8 has the advice you need to make a new boot.ini in easy language.
I would like to say thankyou to CCP and the community (the part thats helping) for the advice you have given.
the good news is (if I'm reading this right) is that you don't need to worry about this happening next patch since the idea of this upgrade was to remove the one from the eve folder. hence since its been removed (the wrong way but has been removed) you never need to worry about this sort of !@#$up again.
For those who are leaving the game can I have your stuff? I'm poor in eve since I play this for kicks and would like faction ships and equipment or your isk. serious though plenty of people have posted helpful advice and while venting your frustration is healthy there are some people on this thread who are starting to look like their trolling it to keep the hate up.

I don't think you all understand. MANY people here will either think their computer is just broken due to some other reason and reformat/get it repaired. Many will not run across a story on a gaming site where EvE is the culprate and see how to fix it. This is a serious issue and when people do spend money or time and loose their personal files they will be super-ultra-mega-****ed

Download: Windows XP (http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/boot/winxpboot.ini)( also windows 2000 installed in a folder named "Windows" ) OR Windows 2000 (http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/boot/win2kboot.ini)
+ Copy it into the root directory of your Windows drive (eg. C:\) + Rename it to "boot.ini" + Go to start, then Run and type in "msconfig" + Click on the "boot.ini" tab, and select "Check all boot paths" + There will be a series of popups for the invalid installation paths in the above files (14 if all goes to plan), and the correct settings will be placed in your boot.ini. + Remember to hit "Apply" before exiting the tool, as this will save the new settings.
Most likely, this file will contain the correct path to your windows installation somewhere there, and will be found by checking it using the msconfig tool.
i am not a tech and following the instructions .. i dont find the boot.ini tab. there isnt. any help ?
yes that happened to me also, it was easily solved by checking i had the correct boot.ini (xp version downloaded from http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/boot/winxpboot.ini) in C:\ root directory , once i checked it was there i restarted the msconfig tool and it was there the long awaited boot tab :-)
Anyway the expansion would have been MAJESTIC if it were not for this ****up that hopefully will be forgetted soon enough
superb fix thanks. And i still believe the expansion has been majestic.

I must add to those seeking to sue CCP over this that there is NO EULA TO ACCEPT before proceeding with the installation of the offending patch, nor is there a "THIS SOFTWARE IS DISTRIBUTED AS IS IF IT KILLS YOUR PC ITS NOT OUR FAULT" disclaimer. I sense all kinds of shouting going on now at CCP's legal department for failing to cover their asses with even that...

XP sp2 here. I shutdown after installing the patches last night and this morning I got the boot.ini invalid message flash up just before the XP logo. System continued normally. I must admit I spent the next hour trying to find out wtf happened. Then I come to log on eve and find this post! I guess XP has a fallback to C: boot, which as my system is bog standard C:\windows this event was not really an issue. I've restored my C:\boot.ini and all is well. Note to dev: check which damn directory you're in before tidying up installs! Especially if your using files like this one! I like stating the obvious... Apart from that, it looks great.

I think it's time to focus on what's important NOW. At this time, I don't care how this happened, who's to blame, why QA missed this, why CCP was even using the name of a critical OS file..... none of it. There will be a time later for all that. Right now people are down and that seems to be the most crucial matter.
So.. some points I consider crucial, in no particular order:
1. If you're reading this you're far more computer literate than most of the world's population (even if this seems elementary to you). Be advised you WILL be asked to help others. Bet on it.
2. Do NOT assume that anyone has the original CD's. In the US at least (and I think everywhere) the practice of giving out the real CD's was on the decline. Reason: On a mass license, how do you know which one's which? Also -- OEM companies (Sony, Dell, others) have set up strang and bizarre strategies that, even with the disks, will not necessarily fix things. Plan on doing this either by hand of via Windows REcovery versions that do not require the original disks or CD booting.
3. Please spare me and the rest of the world (including CCP at least for now) any recriminations for anything. FIx the problem; not the blame.
4. Be advised that WIndows NT does not come with MSCONFIG. It has to be downloaded and it has to be the right version.
5. If you can work this by copying from another VERY similar machine, do it. USB Memory sticks are good for this. It's better than any documentation you're likeky to see here, in that so many OEM's are now doing it their own way.
6. On all Windows systems back to DOS 6.0, the ATTRIB command has been and is perhaps the best way of safely looking at hidden and system files. Use it at least to look, and perhaps to makwe BOOT.INI both visible and (temporarily non-system -- can't set the HIDDEN switch when SYSTEM switch is on). If all this is Greek to you, go to the DOS window (RUN then CMD or COMMAND to get it)and do this: C: CD \ ATTRIB
This will show you all the hidden files in the root directory without changing them.
ATTRIB uses the following switches:
R - Read Only A - Archive (to show if the file has changed) S - System H - Hidden
All of these are typically set for BOOT.INI Turning them off works like this:
ATTRIB BOOT.INI -R -A -S -H
Likewise, turning them on is....
ATTRIB BOOT.INI +R +A +S +H
There is no operational reason to leave this file Hidden -- leave it visible.
Hope this helps -- Later, we'll talk.
