C:\) + Rename it to "boot.ini" + Go to start, then Run and type in "msconfig" + Click on the "boot.ini" tab, and select "Check all boot paths" + There will be a series of popups for the invalid installation paths in the above files (14 if all goes to plan), and the correct settings will be placed in your boot.ini. + Remember to hit "Apply" before exiting the tool, as this will save the new settings.
Most likely, this file will contain the correct path to your windows installation somewhere there, and will be found by checking it using the msconfig tool.
I downloaded the file, copied it to my C:\ root directory then ran msconfig
There is no "boot.ini" tab or option to select "check all boot paths"
So now what do I do?
Also when the series of popups start, do we have to say yes, no or what to them? I'm assuming it will just be an ok but it's better to ask now than get to that stage and noit know what to do. More information for the computers dummies here would be helpful guys.
What does this bit mean too?

For a future patch:
CCP should name their configuration setting file in the EVE directory something other than boot.ini. Like eveboot.ini, for example. If that had been the case, then botching the path would have come up with "no such file", which is a more appropriate failure mode.

What popups? If it's the one asking you if you want to remove invalid paths, say yes.

But I found a problem I didnt have before this patch. Yes, I updated eve client before 4am. Its just that, now, when I insert a cd on my dvd-rom drive, it plays for a few seconds and then PC crashes, doesnt reboot, just crashes. Tried to do the same procedure four time, all the same. Was playing an avi file (one of the ones downloaded from this site), opened it on Windows Media Player and also on BSPlayer. Both made the PC crash.
Any ideas on how to solve this problem?
P.S.- its not the optical drive at all. Just crashed again without any particular reason.
Is there any other way to bump this? Has anyone complained about the same issue before?
Uninstalled eve, downloaded new full build (new graphics one). So far everything seems to be ok. Lets see...
Seems that afterall the random crashes persisted... I remember there was a patch that brought these problems, months ago... Seems that some errors are being repeated by CCP... Well, lets now hope (lol) this post will be answered...

Yea, not naming it the same as the windows system file just seems logical to me.

Not sure what popups you mean, but if you have an XP disk, you may want to:
1. Put the CD in 2. hold down the windows key (between ctrl and alt on the left side), and hit R (then let go of them :D) 3. in the little box in the lower left side of the screen, type "cmd" (without quotes) and Hit enter 4. Sacrifice a small animal 5. Click in the black box that comes up once to make sure you're typing there, and type exactly (without quotes) "sfc /scannow" and hit enter. Let it do whatever it wants.

Nope, I would not be in this thread if I did lol. This is just XP Home Edition SP2.
My laptop has XP Pro SP2 on it, and I have not updated EVE at all on that. I want to do a little experimenting, but I take it that the current patch file works properly since they keep talking specifically about "before 0400 GMT"? If the current patch does work fine then I can't experiment. :/
If you downloaded the patch after 4 GMT as CCP is saying in the first page you are pretty safe. They have corrected the typo in the patch and is working as intended now.

My sad story to toss on the pile: I have my desktop and a work laptop, my DT got hit by this. Dell doesn't send an XP CD anymore, and my XP and WinPE CDs don't detect SATA. I couldn't access my HD at all. I got a HD enclosure for my SATA ($50 - they didn't have just a $20 cable) and CCPs instructions starting this thread didn't work. I was looking at a fresh install and lost data.
Thanks again.
Programming error may have been easy to make, but simple testing would prevent this easily.
Lesson learned?

it will create a boot disk for you and from there you can find out which disk/partition your OS is on.
http://tinyempire.com/notes/ntldrismissing.htm
what it really does is it runs through a bunch of different disks/partitions until it finds yours that has windows, from there all you need to do it copy the boot.ini from the disk to your root drive and delete all the choices that was not the first choice that got you into windows:
Quote:
[Boot Loader] timeout=30 Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows
[Operating Systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows="1ST TRY THIS " /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\Windows="2ND TRY THIS " /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\Windows="3RD TRY THIS " /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\Windows="4TH TRY THIS " /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\Windows="5TH TRY THIS " /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(3)\Windows="6TH TRY THIS " /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\Windows="7TH TRY THIS " /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(4)\Windows="8TH TRY THIS " /fastdetect C:\="9TH TRY THIS selezioni questo nono" D:\="10TH TRY THIS selecione este decimo"
*further tweaking would be to change the timeout to '0' and to make sure the default disk is also the same as the selection that got you into windows.
this should work on almost everyones setup.
**forgot to mention this is something you can do if you already restarted xp/2000 and cant get into xp and cant find the disks.

I can say I am very very unhappy to say the least. I go to bed last night shutting down my computer as normal. I get up today I start to boot my computer and bam so after spending the day geting this computer to function again and I am still working on this and trying to figure out how to recover some stuff lost in the repair of my windows install I think what could have happened to cause this. Then on loging into eve I find out the patch was the cause........ Very very unhappy.

work? WINDOWS is in the first 'hard drive' (C). Edit: I am running Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition ++

This is pretty similar to the file that CCP Mindstar posted a link to (http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/boot/winxpboot.ini)
But in his post he said there would be a boot.ini tab in msconfig after the file is downloaded and copied across and renamed...and there isn't.
Any ideas?
