Edited by: xBANDWAGONx on 07/12/2007 21:49:28 not sure if this has been discussed (as I can't be a$$'d to read through this entire thread), but the info CCP posted about the problem only affecting people with multiple hard drives, partitions and such is complete BS. I've got only one unpartitioned hard drive and was still affected by the issue.
Also, the easiest way to fix your problem if you were affected (ignore CCP's round about method) is to just open the recovery console and simply type "bootfix" ... problem solved in about 30 sec's. -- so as not to confuse you, everything below those two little lines is my forum signature. Now i just need to think of something worth putting here... |

I will boot camp my mac and see how the boot.ini file works on a mac partition, I believe the hal.dll problem is a direct result of a missing boot.ini file. In any case it shouldn't take long to do a skeleton install of windows xp and get back
Awesome thanks, it's like 3 AM here and I'm gonna sleep but I'll check this thread again in the morning.
edit: I forgot to mention my Windows partition is NTFS while it's usually FAT32 with bootcamp. I'm also using windows xp home edition service pack 2.
Sleep well, I can confirm that the hal.dll screen on boot is a direct result of the boot.ini file being removed as I have boot camped my imac and deleted it (backing it up) and the resulting boot gives me exactly the same problem. I also opted for an ntfs partition which makes things a little tricky but not impossible to fix. I am going to now fix it and document it HERE to save you searching this thread and to allow anyone else effected to hopefully repair their mac.
And sound and a Blue Screen happened to me too, it turned out to be faulty realtek onboard HD sound drivers, I updated the drivers from the realtek website and all was good in the world., annoying thing was it would only BS when I turned the armour repairer on.
Oh man you are awesome, thank you! Everything is working perfectly now

follow instructions which have been given and shockingly it works!
note to self: assume 50% of the EVE universe can't read....o_0
Or maybe even following all the directions didn't work.
...
As for me, my Macbook Pro's battery died (whoops.) after having patched Eve and tried it out for a few minutes. I remember plugging it back in, restarting - and getting a "missing or corrupt HAL.DLL" error.
Good thing I had a macbook pro, right? I reboot in Mac, look online to find a solution, and get my hands on a replacement hal.dll file. Obviously, it didn't fix anything. I stumble on the Eve forums because I wanted to see what people thought of Trinity - and holy crap! Missing boot.ini's? Hal.dll file errors? So THAT's what happened.
Great.
I follow the directions to the "T". In fact, I spent my entire day yesterday trying to fix this. I tried so many different variations of the directions provided that frankly, I can't even think of anything else to do except format my Windows Partition and start clean. Nothing worked. I get a new boot.ini? Great. Except now I get, "missing dlls" errors. I find out those could be caused by incompatible HAL.dll files - great! That's just dandy. I erase my HAL.dll and try expand d:\i386\HAL.DL_ from the repair console - and that doesn't work either. I'm digressing. Back on point: I'm running around in circles trying to fix my computer and nothing short of nuking the drive seems to be the solution.
The point I'm at now is me trying a repair installation of Windows XP. I'm trying everything in my power to avoid having to clear out my windows partition. Sure, I have most of my irreplaceable work backed up on DVD (another perk of having a MacBook Pro! I could still access all my windows files from within the Mac side, so I was able to save what I need), but getting everything back to where it was BEFORE losing my boot.ini could take awhile. A long while.
Problem is, even repairing the install doesn't want to work. It freezes with about 32 minutes left in the installation.
I haven't come here to moan about my PC problems due to Trinity, but now, it's getting ridiculous for me. I blew my entire day fixing this, and have desperately tried to fix this all day at work now as well. I'm still miles away from getting Windows back up and running, and I'm starting to get slightly irritated at the situation.
Any other Macbook Pro users got any ideas? (I should also mention, at this point, there probably isn't anything left for me to do than to just nuke the whole partition...)
I have a macbook pro,
Boot off of your cd go into recovery console (till you get to c prompt) follow instructions on website
I fixed mine in 5 min.
Booting off the CD and trying bootcfg /rebuild got me a new boot.ini.
It also didn't fix the problem: Instead, I get: "Load need DLL's for kernel." Solution for that is apparently replacing your Hal.dll with the boot disc with "expand d:\i386\HAL.dl_" to the windows\system32 folder; but that didn't work either. In other words, the recovery prompt methods didn't do anything for me.
Neither did bootfix.

"follow instructions which have been given and shockingly it works!"
Except when it doesn't, as in my case.
Fortunately, my tech guys fixed this for free; they were bored, I'm a good customer, and they hate to see a solid rig like mine under the weather.

I am still in shock that this patch was obviously not fully tested by EVE!!
How about a months free subscription for the mistake? (May even encourage a little more testing!)

Whenever EvE has a big update, it is always best to uninstall EVE, download a full client and install fresh.

They have never given free subscription and are not gona start now. Stop whining and enjoy that you didn't have to pay for this upgrade.

Nobody answered any of my questions in my previous posts. Any idea why some computers with Windows XP have no boot.ini and work fine yet other don't? Also, wasn't this issue fixed? Many people have posted that they have downloaded the classic to premium patch today (this afternoon GMT time) and yet still get the same boot.ini deletion error. Wasn't it supposed to be solved after 4AM on the 6th GMT??? Anyway, good luck to all. After downloading the classic to premium patch, I have uninstalled eve and busy downloading the full client. A biatch to download but oh well. Better safe than sorry.
Cheers to all.

Could be that people are not turning off the hidden files in their folder view. Also, there's a button to show system files as well, so they could be there as well.
As for people missing the file and still being able to boot...well, that could be that you are on a single drive/single partition system where it may not need the boot.ini file if your system was installed to Windows defaults and knows where to look to start the OS. I know some Dells have a small utility partition that can mess things up from the default and it won't know where the partition is for the Windows directory.
That's my best guess...but it's a good one.

I'll hazzard a guess that there are hundreds of people that have had to pay to have there computer fixed after CCP's lack of testing.. Not such a free patch after all eh?? And comments like that aren't really useful are they??

I didn't pay for the upgrade. What are you talking about? I pay a monthly subscription the only game I do in fact. I therefore expect full testing and high quality game updates nothing less.

Sorry if this has been covered already, I am just to lazy to trawl through the many comments.
I have been affected, fixed and not moaned just got on with it :)
But what I cannot for the life of me get to grips with is what the hell were ccp doing around the root folder of your hdd and messing with the boot.ini, this has nothing to do with ccp but it must have been so silly to miss a path which directly meant you were cleaning out old stuff and all your bad code could find in the route was a boot.ini as eve has one as well.
No wonder you have had probs being declared as viral in the past lol.
I am not sure how ccp should respond to this 'gross misconduct' and how they plan on earning the trust of the player base again.
Again let me state that I was affected and have not moaned I just need a suitable answer to a mitigating circumstance that will satisfy my brain that this was not some hidden attempt to acheive god knows what.
My 2 cents.

I installed the patch the night it came out (downloaded the premium upgrade from the website), installed it, checked it out briefly, then shut down my computer and went to bed. I have been unable to load into Windows ever since. I've tried reinstalling Windows, but my CD doesn't recognize my SATA controller and it requires me to load the driver from drive A. My computer does not have a floppy drive or even a floppy controller on the motherboard for that matter. How can I fix this?

I have already gone through all the steps listed on that page. I get to the part where it has me boot from my Windows CD. My CD does not have built in drivers required to recognize my SATA controller. The only way XP will load the drivers is from drive A. I do not have a floppy drive and cannot add one because of the lack of a floppy controller on the motherboard to plug it into. The CD just tells me no harddrives could be found and closes. My OS was pre-installed and now I have no way to re-install it.

Nice another ccp fanboi, maybe they should delete your windows directory and see if you still support them.
What if you are american and shut down for the night on the patch, cause of the fact that they informed nobody of their critical error until at least a good 6 hours after the patch? Then you boot up and it will take easy 5 minutes to fix it? --------------

Can't even get to the recovery console? If that doesn't work, what you might want to do is (and this might take time, but it's not hard) download a Knoppix Live CD ISO, burn it, boot to Knoppix and see if it can see your hard drive. I can't remember if you have to do anything special to make your drive read/write, but if you can see it, you might be able to copy the boot.ini from C:\windows\pss to the root of C:. It should be named something like boot.ini.bak. Change it to boot.ini and see if that helps.
If that doesn't work, I'd give them a call on the numbers they provided at the bottom of the link.

Nice another ccp fanboi, maybe they should delete your windows directory and see if you still support them.
What if you are american and shut down for the night on the patch, cause of the fact that they informed nobody of their critical error until at least a good 6 hours after the patch? Then you boot up and it will take easy 5 minutes to fix it?[/quote
yes 5 minutes

Quote: For the record, I DON'T have a boot.ini file and rebooted fine...no idea why, but it worksed. Still plan on fixing it though.
Same thing, you do still have the boot.ini, you just don't see it, because you haven't enabled it to be visible, otherwise, you wouldn't have booted normally.
mine is doing something similar.... although i did originally have a visible "boot.ini" and not realizing it installed the version that deleted it but now i seem to be booting off of my "d:\"instead of my "c:\"..... if it is there and i just dont see it then why could i see it before and why is it suddenly giving me the error saying it is not able to reset file permissions??????? I have also tried every thing (except using a xp disk to repair it) and no matter where i put the downloaded "boot.ini" file from ccp, it dosnt show up on the "MSCONFIG" option as a "boot.ini tab", why is this?
(yes i have put it in C:\ all on its own and it still didnt work)

Originally by: Endemicus I have already gone through all the steps listed on that page.

Originally by: Endemicus I installed the patch the night it came out (downloaded the premium upgrade from the website), installed it, checked it out briefly, then shut down my computer and went to bed. I have been unable to load into Windows ever since. I've tried reinstalling Windows, but my CD doesn't recognize my SATA controller and it requires me to load the driver from drive A. My computer does not have a floppy drive or even a floppy controller on the motherboard for that matter. How can I fix this?

You can achieve the same thing using dos or the recovery console on your windows xp cd or what ever came with the pc that has windows on it. The only dif is you have to enter it manually. I'll let you google that though since your such a *****.

Actually US law does apply to the game since it was marketed in the US but only to a limited extent. More importantly however his claims are a joke at best if he ever read the TOS and EULA CCP have covered their rear ends =) Bottom line is things happen its a software proggy a simple typographical error in the code can cause quite a bit of damage. I wrote an irc client once and in one of the updates i made a simple mistake and it would wipe your hard drive =P
