I, following instructions in an e-mail from eve-online newsletter to use system restore, have apparently fried my comp. I restored to about 4 days ago, and it shut down, began to reboot, and displayed this message (typed exactly as it was shown): <Windows root>\System32\hal.dll.
Thanks.
Insert the windows xp cd and boot from it. Then use the "repair" installation to replace the core files of windows. That will fix the issue. The hal.dll thing along with a windows update .dll had issues with them from an ms patch a while ago so when u restore it be it from a cd or windows restore the dll's get screwed up. ( IIRC anyway =P ) but none the less using repair from the windows cd should fix the issue.
well this seams to be a good fix but what if you do not have the admin password for the repair console to use then you are just out of luck. I have called ccp at the atlanta number and told that they have a fix forthis but can not tell me the fix nice to know that have not goten any thing from threm but we can nnot fix at this time and then one that asked for my acount my name adress and phone number.
I must ask that ccp clean this thred up i mena this is insane that i need to look at 80+ pages of stuff to try to fix my system on my own.

Eve on C:\ with XP Pro SP2 and no boot.ini left after update.
Huzzah for the heads up before I rebooted, I guess.
Downloaded Trinity patch right off after downtime, ran upgrade to premium graphics from the login window.
Why would ANY graphics engine update for this client even BE doing ANYTHING in the root of C:\ is what I want to know!?
Restored boot.ini from boot.ini.backup, rebooted successfully and immediately created a new restore point.
Perhaps CCP should test their patches out on systems other than Vista! But we Desktop Support guys are always having to clean up after Apps Support screw things up so I am used to it.

Originally by: Detris Ok here is my problem, i have a macbook pro w/ bootcamp and windows xp home. I downloaded the patch before it was stopped. Then i read the post by ccp and then promptly did what it said. i even checked the msconfig and boot.ini showed up. I restarted my computer and i got a black screen with an error. Then i wondered why it didn't boot and thought that there was something special with bootcamp. I read through this thread and find that there is a special line that needs to be added. I go to change the boot.ini file on my mac side; the only problem with this is the windows partition is a read only drive. I don't have the windows cd. What do i do?
On top of this i have an english paper due monday so thx ccp.
Hi Detris,
You are not the first person for this to happen to. I took a bit of time to make and break (then fix) a boot camped mac and have documented a 3 step fix HERE
Should sort you out as it enables you to make the windows drive read/write

If that method doesn't work - unistall the two apps and try this one:
if you are using Bootcamp and were affected by the boot.ini problem and have no WinXP CD:
Download and create a boot disc of 'Knoppix' when in Mac OS X, when booted in knoppix you can force mount your WinXP partition and edit/create a boot.ini file.
Knoppix http://www.knoppix.org/
How to force mount while in Knoppix: http://rhadimas.wordpress.com/2006/10/15/fix-the-windows-bootini-file-with-knoppix2/

Quote: Actually they are both to blame. As another poster wrote (curtesy perhaps of NG Channel) disasters are usually the result of a sequence of smaller errors.
Hehe, I don't work for NGC, but it did occur to me after I wrote the post that it sounded somewhat like the show :-) Seconds From Disaster is nice proof that CCP isn't the only company with a QA department that needs firing. The last episode I saw involved a Boeing 737 crashing due to vibration in the engine fan blades at high altitude. Turns out, the engine was never tested in-flight before they deployed it in thousands of planes. Sound familiar? :P

Edited by: Plutoinum on 10/12/2007 16:24:27 The only real problem that I see with live CDs is if you use RAID. The drivers might just not be there.
I also wonder, if some people screwed their boot.ini due to trying to fix it.
E.g. if I had upgraded and edited my boot.ini in the same way like the emmergency message, or been stupid and make it look like CCP suggested, although nothing was wrong with it, I would not have been able to boot anymore, since my C: drive is on the second partition.
Besides that there are options to select the hal-dll (hardware abstraction layer) in boot.ini. Currently there are 5 different hal-dlls with different names in XP and usually just the one that's right for your hardware gets installed and named hal.dll, but you can also install them all, keep the original names and just point to the right one in boot.ini via an option. Without the right hal-dll, the computer just doesn't boot anymore. So if any OEM uses that option, you are in trouble, especially if you have no clue.
I made that painful experience after upgrading from an old Athlon single core to an Intel dual core and new mainboard etc. ofc. and after that the PC didn't even work in safe mode anymore due to the wrong hal.dll. Windows CD somewhere lost after moving to a new appartment and Linux not working either due to being compiled and configuered for old hardware. No up-to-date linux distribution, like my old win 98 it lacked the drivers. Needed to build up the old hardware to some extent to get network access again.
Now I'm prepaired with WinXP CD, Live CD with network support, backups that are restorable via live cd and such stuff. I currently don't use RAID, but once I do, I make sure that the whole thing allows to access that 'raided' system, too, if something like this happens again.

Ok, I will try to stay calm.
I have rebooted my PC already, and following the steps did not work. CCP can't just forget about this. I came back to eve-online (on my laptop) and now can't even find the mfing phone numbers to call support. Something this big, NEEDS TO STAY ON THE ******* FRONT PAGE!!!!!
Now, doing all the steps it beings me to a windows\sys32\hal.dll error. How can I resolve this please, and can someone repost the CS phone numbers.
Thanks, Eve Player since July 2003 |

Very frustrating, after doing all the suggested repair attempts and hours on the phone with Dell we were told that it seems to have messed up our \system32 files and we have to reinstall from scratch. Dells words.. they are sending us disks to do this. Nice of them but still.. anyone have any luck with getting some sort of credit on their accounts for time not able to play?

Well i lost my windows xp machine . Totally gone and all my work info along with it too. people say always have a back up, and i do, but i do this every 6 months. Anyone who backs up more than that is most likely lying. So you can see, the pinch is hard. Not to mention my repair bill is over ú100 which also leaves a sour taste. I have a lap top here, but i havent tried to log on since Friday, ~~Im a lil worried ill just lose this machine too. Ive really enjoyed this expansion so far ! :(

I need help with this please. I have already restarted. Dell XPS M1710
I use my OS cd and enter the recovery console.
bootcfg /list = There are currently no boot entries available to display
bootcfg /rebuild = Scanning all disks...... Please wait, since...... Error: Failed to successfully scan disks for Windows installations. This error may be caused by a corrupt file system, which wwould prevent Bootcfg from successfully scanning. Use vhkdsk to detect any disk error. Note: This operation......
chkdsk /r and /p do not help and nor does fixboot.
can anyone give me any clear steps to fixing this without reinstalling windows etc?
I can't phone the help lines because the phone says they are invalid numbers. I'm in the UK.

If you have a computer or someone elses who has a CD burner I suggest downloading Knoppix and burn it to a disk
Place it in your computer and let it run, you will come up with a desktop that entirely different from the normal except the options in the bottom right.
This is not ment for a self help approach at this point you are going to need someone to help you. Knoppix should if I am correct have NXServer (if you need visual support outside of the tty) and SSHD which allows for remoting in with text only which is more efficient and easier to manage.
You already know my game name, if you manage to get back in somehow give me a shout, when I checked for you, you where not in game. I tried...

Funny how everyone (well almost everyone) takes every opertunity to ***** and complain. Eve is still the best online game around and will be for a long time well done CCP. I do think that it is a slight oversight creating a game with a boot.ini file
