In RL ECM is usual is done by blinding sensors by large amount of noise. While this prevents locking of normal targets it actually makes it easier to track jammer that is source of noise, so a typical modern anti air and anti ship active guided missiles are programmed to switch to passive mode if jammed and guide to source of jamming noise.
As an analogy I would suggest that ships targeted by ECM be allowed to lock on ships or drones that are attempting to use ECM on them, even if they are unable to lock any other target. Maybe even ECM targeted ships should get sensor range and resolution bonus against ships using ECM on them.
This would make ECM useless in solo ships but still useful in fleets to either take out enemy logistic ships or DPS ships that have gunn/missile range smeller then ECM range. In that way ECM would become equal to other EVE e-war methods in that it is useful only is specific situations and and against specific ships instead of instant overwhelming force multiplier that can be used against any ship (except supper capitals and titians). |

Clicked on the thread expecting a suggestion that would nerf ECM to the point of being worthless.
Instead found an idea that's actually pretty damn good, I like it. This would also go a long way towards making ECM less powerful in small gang fights, which are the main situation it could be considered overpowered. |

This is one of the best ideas I heard so far, one of the most annoying things about ECM has always been the inability to fight back while ecm'ed... this will at least give the single guy a fighting chance to do something against the ECM :)
with that being said, ofc the ECM ships are normally out of reach of the guy he is using it on :) so in fact the nerf is not so bad, and in large fleets. the ECM normally goes against the logistics, they wont really be able to fight back anyway
for the people swarmed by some ecm drones, they will be able to target those drones and attempt to kill them before proberly dieing anyway :D (or at least send their own drones on them)
Wouldn't hurt to allow the ship to target all "things" attempting to jam your ship, as they are all sending "Noise" at your ship, if you ask me. (that will make the situration where ecm drones are jamming you more possible to counter, otherwise you could only target one at a time) |

This simple fix is a great idea to the problem of sitting there helpless (which is mostly just annoying that you can't join in the fight.) Perhaps the ECM modules should increase signature as well, since they're blasting out a lot of EM noise. |

No thanks, ecm drones are already more powerful than they should be regardless of it being chance based... 5 light ecm drones have a 27.6% chance to jam a hurricane, while 1 multispectral ecm has 15% chance, and a ladar specific has 23% chance... ecm drones should not have a higher chance than a module (since the other ew drones don't either)
That also said, the duration that a single jam can get in on a target can normally be enough to mean the fight is lost or won (depending on which side your on)...
This is just my personal opionion, and I know alot of you love how powerful ecm drones are, because they are more effective than a set of damage drones - but it is what ruins solo pvp or very small gang pvp for alot of people :P I always think the target should have a chance fighting while dieing in fire
As late as yesterday I was considering going solo against a small gate camp with a few sabres, cynabal and frigs... but decided against it when I found out they had a falcon... |

Actually in RL what happen is a missile is able to lock on to the source of the White noise.
This we already have they are called FoF missiles they can be fired at any aggressive ship whether your can lock them or not. Therefore why do we need yet another module or change that make a Ewar ship redundant.
We have 3 three counters to ECM already
1. ECCM 2. FoF missiles 3. Drones
Why the hell do we need yet another counter?
I suggest your learn how to counter ECM rather than whine about it.

Only 4 - 5 boats in the entire game can really say, Oh man my drones will take care of that guy while im jammed to nothing.. too bad they'll end up killing your drones and you cant throw out new ones to target him anyways..
FoF missiles? people use those? kay ill slap two launchers on my hurricane and see how well that goes..
ECCM... ok maybe you'll get jammed once a minute vs being perma-jammed.... who needs a shield invul or a warp disruptor anyways.... |

I suggest your learn how to counter ECM rather than whine about it. As someone who's flown every ECM boat including the infamous pre-nerf Falcon, I like to think I know what I'm talking about here.
1. Worthless. Takes up a slot while having no secondary benefits, and does very little. The chance-based mechanic of ECM contributes to this. 2. Also worthless - FOFs do hilariously low DPS and will only even target the ECM ship if you're lucky. They're also pretty much only applicable to the Drake, as that's pretty much the only missile boat larger than a frigate worth using. 3. Only any good if said ECM boat is even in range - not exactly likely if fitted and flown well.
In smaller engagements, ECM is overpowered. Simple as. The reason it's so difficult to nerf is that it'd hard to nerf the EWAR without breaking half a dozen ships, but this idea makes it less viable for locking down an entire gang with 2 ships while still keeping it useful in an anti-support role. Best solution I've seen so far, frankly. |

This ability you speak of is in SOME missiles only. Those missiles can passively "home" on very strong amounts if radar or infrared EM waves. This application is not present in all anti air and anti ship missiles by any means and currently has an in game equivalent of FoF Missiles. |

No there is a even more Simple solution that does not involve having to make new modules that frankly will almost kill a section of the skill area. That is take your own Ewar with you in a small gang. This is the most simple idea.
it takes less time than trying to dream up some new module or cry on the forums because the OP dose not want to nerf their umber PVP ship by protecting against ECM.
ECM is fine as it is.
As any Ewar pilot will tell you ECM is not a dead cert. to work unlike any other EWAR system and the ships that have bonuses or are designed to use ECM are the weakness in their class, so as it stands ECM pilots fly with a greater risk of getting podded then any other member of a fleet.

FoF is not an equivalent to those RL missile systems, because FoF will just target anything and do low DPS. The anti-radar missiles look specifically for the source of the radar jamming and usually do enough damage to kill the thing.
So I would really like to see an equivalent in the form of a missile (or multiple, considering 4 damage types and different sizes) that only targets ECM sources and can actually do damage.
Also, the counter measure against RL anti-radiation-missiles is to shut the jamming off for a moment. This could also be used in EVE to stop the incoming missile from finding its target - with the penalty of breaking the jamming for a moment.
Interesting possibilities!

It would actualy make the specialist rather useless and the non specialist more usefull.
If this whas the case it would probably be wise to fit EMC on you Logistics vessle than take a Falcon with you.
I don't have a problem with EMC being looked at though raw DPS should never be the option, at the moment EMC is one of the few things people need to keep in mind when making a fleet aside of DPS, I rather see more variation then bigger blobs of the same ships.
on a side note.
F.o.F. Missiles work fine you just need to invest in them and probably have a missile ship not one lancher at the side. |

1. Drones - I'm out of range of all but sentries. The only ships that can use those are a couple of battleships and two cruisers - hardly practical. 2. FoF missiles - utterly laughable. Even if I'm in range, and they fire at me, (two very big ifs there) they do pathetic DPS and most of them get shot down by my defenders. Yeah, FoFs barely even deserve a mention here. 3. ECCM - thanks for giving up a slot for something that only barely hinders me, guys. I've managed to get jams on 2 ECCM'd Basilisks at the same time before.
Oh and I think you mean "get blown up" not "get podded", as if you're not in a bubble it's pretty damn hard to get your pod killed unless you lag out. As for getting blown up - hey guess what, I'm too far out for most weapons to even reach me. I guess having a clue how to fly my ships is why I don't lose many ECM boats eh?

Right on, sister!
Having been stuck in the situation of being solo'd by a small gang with an ecm ship I'd say that yes, it is a pain in the arse sitting there not being able to shoot back BUT even if I could have I'd have been blown away anyways as I was outnumbered so it really makes no difference. In 1v1 I've never been beaten by an ECM boat because as soon as they lose that ECM my drones are on them and they die or warp off as soon as they get ECM lock again. The better the ECM the worse the tank. There are counters to everything in the game. Some of these are having other people about you. In a giant game of rock paper scissors lizard spock you win some you lose some.

Should've read on further, they got the idea from RL then presented it in terms that make gameplay sense.
The fundamental problem with ECM (besides the mechanic, but one thing at a time...) is the way it scales. In mid-larger fleet fights, it's fine balance-wise. It's small gangs where it's a big problem - and the main solution to ECM for them is either bringing their own ship (great. More of those around, fun stuff) or to bring more people (yay blobbing!).
This idea keeps ECM viable at all fight sizes but nerfs it slightly in small gang engagements. I see no issues with this, frankly. |

All ideas are based "In RL". The more plausible something is, the more immersive it is.
ESPECIALLY in the sci-fi genre. In fact, there was a time when Sci-Fi was different from Fantasy; when the genre was authored by actual scientists portraying their views of the future based on current (at the time) scientific theories.
Anyone who believes that RL has no bearing on fiction is an idiot not worth listening to. |

No. ECM got greatly nerfed long ago. It is enough as it is.
Every ship and every tactic must have a situation where it has the advantage. For example, if you have a ship that is very powerful in close range, you know you have to get close to the enemy. What you're asking here in this example would be to reduce the strength of this ship in close range.
ECM's are powerful in small gangs. It is their strength.
I have been flying Rook, Blackbird and Scorpion for YEARS, and I think they're very well balanced right now.

What this does is nerf the ability of ECM to shut down half a gang and narrows the role to anti-support. ECM would still be useful and very powerful in said role, just not an I-win button vs virtually any ship you can name.
Quote:ECM's are powerful in small gangs. It is their strength. ECM is too powerful in small gangs, by a long way.
Quote:I have been flying Rook, Blackbird and Scorpion for YEARS, and I think they're very well balanced right now. Of course you do. Nobody wants their I-win button nerfed. If you had a clue how to fly them on the other hand (or indeed the experience you claim), you'd have noticed by now how absurdly powerful a mechanic it is in smaller gangs.
The nerf a few years back only tackled one aspect of what makes ECM a broken mechanic - the 200km ranges people were managing on them. Nerfing that has gone some of the way to fixing things, but it still works very badly in terms of gang-size scaling, and actively encourages blobbing. People throw out all sorts of "counters" to ECM that are largely bullshit, but know what the best counter of all is? Bring more people.

I'd like to thank all the responders that provided constructive criticism, and those that liked and endorsed the idea.
For those that are sceptical let me assure you ECM will still be enormously useful if this nerf is implemented. Ability to take out logi, that besides it's drones typically can't do anything to you, will always make your ships and ECM focused skill sets enormously useful in combat.
Also the way new mechanic works you might be able to get some more kill-mails for yourself. Just ECM some noob in light tackle from a tactical at long range, after he realises he can lock only you he is likely to approach you separating from his gang members, because he is a noob that does not know any better. Then you can either kill him for solo kill-mail or you can warp out to another tactical before he puts a point on you if you think you can't take him out in time. It is good way to troll people while still keeping them in game. As it works now only thing ECM target can do is warp out, or not even that if he has point on him, not interesting, just boring. IMHO this nerf would make for a more entertaining game for all sides. |

Try fitting an ECM ship for yourself and see how powerful they are. To make it so omgwtfoverpowered, they need to have all or almost all ECMs in the mid slots (that means no tackle), and they need whatever tiny buffer they can get in the low (that means no damage). And they still have paper-thin tanks.
Maybe try targetting these wtfpwnmobiles and you'll see that they fall apart under any fire whatsoever. Or maybe try flying one and you'll see that your own arguments fall apart under any fire whatsoever.
They are the best of the racial EWars, but they are balanced as they are. The other EWars are just situational or plain sucky.
(PS. They could have a range of a million meters and it wouldn't make a difference. At 140 km or so you can just warp on top of them.) |

I agree with this all the way. Yet I think that ECCM suffers from 2 major disavantages. First, it's really uneffective. Second, the module itself is ONLY, USEFULL, WHEN YOU ENCOUNTER JAMMING SHIPS. Think about it. You counter Neuts with capboosters, which are still useful in pretty much all situations, right ? You counter sensor dampeners with sensor boosters, right ? You counter tracking disruptors with tracking enhancers/computers, right ? The thing is, all those modules have an utility. I mean, having tracking enhancers is great even if you don't encounter Curses/Pilgrims/Sentinels, right ? Sensor boosters are still useful even if you don't encounter sensor dampening ships, right ? ECCM is simply worthless if you don't encounter a jamming ship and if he isn't jamming you. It needs a boost in terms of efficiency, and it needs to affect more than one of the ship's electronic parameters. It could provide a (smaller than a sensor booster's) boost to scan res and targetting range, it could provide an additionnal +5 lockable targets ? It could provide a reduction of the total jamming time or something like that.
No you are wrong
You do not fit capbooster to counter neuts, nor sensor boosters to counter sensor dampeners, nor tracking computers/ enhancers to counter tracking disrupters you fit these modules to boost your ship. The side effect is that these modules counter the others, and that is the only difference.
Plus if they brought a missile that was able to lock onto the ECM generator and attack the ship then it would be an insta kill basically, unless CCP changed the whole mechanics of how ECM works.
ECM like every other module in the game has a cycle time. This cycle time remains even if you stop the module. CCP would have to make it so ECM could switch on and off instantaneously, to counter this missile which would mean that is would be the only module in the game that did this and render the new missile basically useless before it was introduced. Therefore making the whole idea a non-starter
Mind you on the other hand being able to turn ECM on and off instantly would mean a major buff to the power of ECM so it might not be a bad idea afterall |

I actually like this idea. It still allows ECM to do what it meant to do (act as a force multiplier by shutting down ships) while still allowing the target to actually do something about his/her situation.
However, because ECM ships would effectively "self-primary" themselves to an enemy (more so than they already do now), Id recommend that ECM-geared ships have their HP and/or resistances buffed a bit to take more of a direct beating. I just threw in the idea that the RL counter is to shut off ECM, for discussion. It's not a refined idea for EVE and it would be a bad move to allow ECM modules to be simply switched on/off.
The missile would still work under the current circumstances though, where you cannot turn your ECM off instantly. You would have to use defender missiles - or get a better tank by ship buff.

I love how people keep saying ECM ships are fine because they have low tanks, apparently not realising that they're jamming at anything from 70-150+km. You'd be surprised how small an issue lack of tank is when you're that far out.
Also most proper ECM ships will still carry some buffer, my Falcon has something like 20k EHP which, while not award winning, is a long way from the "look at them funny and they explode" description people keep giving them. |

I think this would be an excellent change, however, it would definitely need some re-working of all the jamming bonused ships because its kinda uncool to give them zero tank AND make them primary.
But yeah, I support this, or at least some form of this. And yes, it does make sense that jamming would be a big obvious scream to your sensors. |

If you're getting jammed at over 100 km, you can warp on top of them and use drones or FOF missiles. "But I'm being pointed by an interceptor and shot at by a hurricane!"... well then that's 3 vs 1 isn't it? You expect to win?
Falcons are tech 2 ships. Try getting 20k EHP on a Blackbird. You can fit less than half that on a Blackbird.
I like the idea. ECM is balanced but boring. This would make it a more interesting EWAR. Though ECM ships SHOULD be given additional buffer to compensate. |

They work sort of.
TPs obviously work but don't actually protect you from anything, so shouldn't really be included.
TDs work in limited situations. The problem really is that unlike falcons the TD boats aren't just about TDs. In fact they are seldom if ever used for TDs, they are all about neuts. TDs help in small gang situations, but you don't take a ship out of the fight the same way the ECM does.
Damps have the same problem. The ships are more useful for long range tackle than for damps, and ditto TPs. And that's the real problem. |

I have no idea why you have such an aversion to real life. News flash for you: space shuttles exist in real life, you'd better quit eve. And while the devs can make the fluff whatever they want, it's always better if the stuff they're making up makes sense.
Besides, I think this idea would be great in terms of GAME BALANCE, which is what you ironically seem to have ignored. ECM isn't broken, I'd say it's balanced by the weakness of the chassis that use ECM. But it's a bad, unfun mechanic. I'd much rather have this suggestion applied, as it provides a layer of strategy and depth and fun to the module. (But ECM boats should be compensated).
I've fought ECM before, I've used ECM. It's not so amazing that it breaks the game and in most cases I'd personally rather just take out a combat ship. Maybe in alliance tournaments they can figure out how to exploit max-skilled pilots in tech 2 ships in an artificial combat environment against pilots who don't know what to expect, but that's not the most accurate way to judge balance is it? (This also being the same tournament that was rigged the year before.) |

Look, Threads like this tick me off, simply because these ships are available to everyone. If you think they are so OP then why don't you fly one? 1. ECCM is very Viable as it pretty much doubles your chance to resist ECM. 2. FOF is useless, if you want to argue a point, this would be better. 3. Drones WORK! If you see an ECM boat, swap targets immediately. This is where ppl fail... you want to talk range, close the gap or GTFO since you seem to refer this on a 1v1 scale. Also ECM drones are easily taken down by combat drones. I was just in a fight where the guy had a swarm of ECM, they got me on their first cycle, but I popped my drones out and when they failed a cycle, I locked (With a BS mind you) and my drones did the rest and I came out the victor. 4. Projected ECCM... why ppl forget this mod is beyond me. If you're running in small gangs and you don't want to sacrafice your precious mid-slot, get a dedicated Anti-ECM boat loaded with ECCM (2) and Projected ECCM (2), I can think of a few Armor ships that could fill this roll pretty well. Edit: 5. If you were to implement your idea, CCP would have to make ECM ships Tank better, cause atm, they're pretty much a paper bag... gee I wonder why?
Conclusion, ECM is fine the way it is... the Failure here is People who don't want to bother preparing for it... well boo hoo. Sun Tzu would be ashamed of you! Your failure is not CCP's problem, and you are your own worst enemy.

Logistics don't have tackle or damage because they don't need it and I doubt you'd be shouting about that as a crippling disadvantage. Christ you're simple. Here, I'll give you a free lesson on how to fit and use an ECM boat. Seems you need it: __________________________________________ Fit 1 - Honour tanked: Signal Distortion Amplifier II x2
Experimental 10MN MicroWarpdrive ECM - Race specific x4 Sensor Booster II
AML II w/ defenders or just lights Small Energy Neutralizer II
Medium Particle Dispersion Projector I x2 Medium Particle Dispersion Augmentor I __________________________________________ 111km optimal 150km max jam range, 10 strength, no tank but when you're jamming from that stupidly far who cares? It only costs about 10 million and can single handedly ruin a small gang. The only viable way to beat it? Drag around a 100mil isk sniper ship with ECCM and a hell of a lot of luck. All that for a T1 cruiser.
Oh and said sniper ship can't be missile based, as from that far away defenders work very well. __________________________________________ Fit 2 - buffered: [Blackbird, New Setup 1] 1600mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten Plates I Signal Distortion Amplifier II
Experimental 10MN MicroWarpdrive ECM - Race specific x4 Sensor Booster II
Empty highs
Medium Particle Dispersion Augmentor I Medium Particle Dispersion Projector I x2 __________________________________________
Once again capable of jamming at sniper range and can actually survive being sneezed at. Nothing fits into the highs but once again, who cares? Without carting around a sniper ship that costs 10x as much, there's not much you can do to stop it. There's also a halfway fit that has a jam range of "only" 93km, but has both a buffer and highslot defences. |

Quote:1. ECCM is very Viable as it pretty much doubles your chance to resist ECM. You'd think so, but chance based mechanics can and do still result in stupidly high jam rates even against ECCM'd targets. In my considerable experience with ewar ships, ECCM'd ones are barely harder to jam than the regular ones, and in small gangs it makes no difference at all to the outcome.
Quote:3. Drones WORK! If you see an ECM boat, swap targets immediately. This is where ppl fail... you want to talk range, close the gap or GTFO since you seem to refer this on a 1v1 scale. ... I still haven't read your entire proposal, just fyi so you can omit the ECM discussion. My point is RL should never be a concern when balancing game features. Its a damn sci fi game that takes place far away in a universe years from now. It doesn't have to make sense in terms of our current reality because the reality that is a universe far away thousands of years from now is an entirely different reality altogether. As long as they mold it into the lore they create, it makes sense just fine.
Thats the part you don't seem to get. They can recreate the lore however they need to in order to mold it into game balance.
I don't plan on reading your proposal btw, because its about ECM and thus something that will likely not be touched even if your idea is fantastic. ECM was already heavily nerfed but only after quite a lot of indications that it was overpowered and excessive whining on the forums, oh and the creation of a fantastic meme (because of falcon). Its simply not a big enough deal right now for CCP to touch it.

This is indeed the best idea-thread I've read this year.
If I may offer a suggestion for further improvement to make the ECCM module more useful it could be merged with the Sensor Booster since both do basically the same job of strengthening sensors. This, along with the OP's idea, would make things pretty much perfect IMHO because it becomes feasible to fly a sebo that doubles as eccm without feeling like you're wasting a slot.
Also posting that ecm drones are overpowered. If a cruiser or bigger ship doesn't have its own drones -- and many ships don't carry drones -- then it's simply unable to fight them. |

Saying something is useless isn't going to help your case. The devs included it in game and I think they know precisely how effective or ineffective it is. It's there it works as intended. If ECCM give you the impression it's wasting a slot then don't use it. |

If ECCM gives you the impression it's wasting a slot then don't use it. Hahahahahahahahahaha oh wow. You know the devs included the Bellicose, Omen, and dozens of other broken ships and modules in the game as well right? And how rockets were broken for the better part of 2 years? They may have been making some great efforts recently, but when they introduced this stuff they rushed it through with no idea how badly it would work.
Quote:In the same way shield and armor resistances can not fully protect from damage only mitigate it so follows ecm and eccm. Adapt. Flawed comparison and yet more idiocy. Armor resistances always work, and are never a waste of a slot. Tracking computers are never a wasted slot. Sensor boosters are never a wasted slot. ECCM is frequently a wasted slot. It provides no benefit at all to the ship besides making jam cycles land slightly less often while putting a big dent in the ships tank, utility or both.
Also I notice you've not made a single valid argument as to why the OP is a bad idea. ECM stays powerful, but slightly more specialised - keeping the role it has in larger fights while no longer being stupidly overpowered in small gangs. |

The trouble with this suggestion is that you are looking for something to counter ECM when in a small gang.
As everyone in Eve knows you bring a modules to counter ECM in a small gang, almost every ship in a large gang will have it fitted and render ECM totally useless. Unless of course you are going to argue that that there would have to be a limit on the number of ships that could carry it (something that would be almost impossible for CCP to control) .
Your argument simple does not work.
ECM is here and here to stay. Stop trying to change something that will not be changed with a proposal that simple can not work in practise.

I still wouldn't know why I'd fly a Caldari recon ship with this nerf?
Take any damage dealing BC and you can take out a logistic ship as well.
situation as you would discribe you solutions.
someone is stupid enough to buy a 400 to 500 million ISK ship specificly to seek out a logistic ship that might or might not be in a fleet.
Yeah there is one lets jam the logi -> entire fleet turns to Recon 1.5 second laters recon is gone.
Someone takes a 60 milion BC targets the logi and blows the living daylight out of it, locks next target and start shooting again.
There is no reason to fly a EMC ship whit this adjustment and more reason to fly DPS EHK ships, not that I'm against a change though it shouldn't render the ships useless. |

Seems you didn't even bother reading the bit where I mentioned it jams out to 110km+. Thrasher outside station? Dead instantly from the gang said BB is with, or jammed while it warps off laughing at you. You really are just grasping at straws now, trying to come up with situations in which the ship is slightly sub-optimal and/or has a stupid pilot. Are you saying it being OP in small gangs is fine, because you can station camp it? What a load of crap.
Warps on top and fires FoF missiles? Warp out and back. 20 seconds effort on the part of the ECM ship, and the enemy probers have to start all over. You realise it's standard practice to be aligned out flying one of these, right? Oh wait, I forgot you have no clue how to fit one let alone fly it.
Quote:2. No highs? How do you defend against drones? By being hopelessly out of range of them. Are you really this stupid or are you just a troll?
Quote:P.S. Under 20k ehp for a cruiser is weak tank. Under 1500 m/s for a cruiser is slow speed. Under 200 dps for a cruiser is low dps. Oh dear. Seems I'm gonna have to put this in simple terms for a simple person: Armour HACs go under 1500m/s. They're incredibly effective. Scimitars do less than 200 DPS. They're incredibly effective. Sniper tier 3 BCs have less than 20k EHP. They're incredibly effective.
Notice a trend here, newbie? Different ships depend on different things to do their job well. ECM ships don't need DPS or speed to be good, because instead they have the ability to lock down multiple ships from stupidly long ranges. And I'd just like to emphasise here: this is in a 10mil isk cruiser. The only viable small gang counters to it usually come in at 100mil+ When we start on the likes of the Falcon or Scorpion, it gets even harder from there. Falcons have lower range but insanely powerful jamming capability, and Scorpions have even better range than the Blackbird coupled with relatively strong tanks and point defences. |

The Kitsune for one reasonable fast quick lock time and can carry it's own ecm and as been proven to be one of the most love Electronic attack ships as it can reach, lock and jam a Falcon before the Falcon can lock it, rendering the falcon infective and easy to kill and as most people do not fly this class of ship they are farely cheap.
Now yes i know you hate ECM and want nothing to do with it, but like i said earlier this idea will not be brought in due to the fact that it may make a small gang have a fighting chance against ECM, but as every ship in a gang will carry it it will make ECM useless in a large fleet

This is truth. While I haven't been flying recons anywhere near as long as Dutchess, I can categorically confirm the truth of this statement.
I also agree that ECM can be ridiculous in small gangs, especially if you know what you are going against. However, it can also fail spectacularly. I'm recalling an engagement a couple weeks ago where I in my Falcon and a few bros in mostly cruisers and thrashers r4ped a Dominix, Apoc, and Wolf, due to my permajamming 2 of them, and getting about 50% of my jams on the domi.
In another engagement, with a rack of correct racials, I had to warp out sooner than I wanted due to missing a lot of jam cycles that I usually don't and getting drone aggro from an approaching Ishkur.
My point here is that ECM is still fairly random, so long as the targeted ships have a decent sensor strength. It is not reasonable to say that it's unfair that your Dramiel, AF, or other fotm angel/winmatar ship can't kill a dedicated ECM ship and all my bros solo. Of course it can't. It's like going to Compton in LA and picking a fight with a big black man. You're on his turf and he's got the advantage. Proper planning and tactics are needed.
ECCM works fine, so long as the ship it's mounted on has a reasonable sensor strength to begin with. Logis and recons are prime examples of this. If I know I'm going up against other ECM ships, I fit an ECCM instead of 5th jammer. OH, GOD! I just gave up a useful item to fit a not useful one!!1!!!1! Oh, noez! Wait, that enemy Falcon didn't jam me after all. I can still fight!
A jammed ship is useless. An unjammed one still does damage and has to be considered, even if it has slightly less EHP or can web/scram.
Drones work very well vs ECM ships. But as stated, the controlling ship has to be in range for them to work. Fast drone boats like the Ishkur, Ishtar, Dramiel, and Cynabal all carry lots of drones. Get closer, wait for him to miss a cycle, and let him have it. Or, like the domi, use sentries and fit for range.
FoF missiles suck. They need a serious buff in damage. They also only target the closest aggressor, even if its a drone. They need to target ECM ships. ECM pilots would then have to adjust to counter the counter. This is good for evolving pvp and I would support it. It also fits the backstory as most missile ships are Caldari and Amarr.
However, I would like to see a turret equivalent. It is not right that only missile slingers have an option and turret ships do not. Perhaps reworking the passive targeter along with the target locking formula can be done.
I believe the way it is done now is that a hit with an ECM module reduces your max locked targets to an absolute value of 0. Perhaps a better way would be for the ECM module to decrease your max locked targets by whatever you max is, minus the passive targeter bonus of +1 per module). The passive targeter bonuses would be a different subset of locked targets that ECM cannot touch. This would be fair. In order to counter ECM so effectively, you would have to give up that slot. In fact, it might be OP vs ECM so that a damage reduction should be applied that would reflect the properties of a less accurate targeting system.
I don't want to hear about "I have to give up tank/dps slots so I can counter ECM. Wahh!!!" What do you think we are doing by fitting ECM? ECM modules are mid-slots and our bonusing modules are low slot items. Our ships do crap dps. The only thing we can do is jam or run. Thus we jam very well. It is also one of the few reliable ways of killing or neutralizing winmatar ships.
OP's suggestion is one of the better ones. But no one ship or fit is capable of dealing with everything out there. Not even Falcon. "How do you kill that which has no life?" |

If you'd bothered to read any of my posts, you'll see I listed a few counters of my own that are a lot more viable than "fit eccm roflz" or "JUST UES DR0NES!11!". The catch is, they're all either: 1. Just more ECM. When the only counter to X is more of X or overwhelming force, something is wrong. 2. Horribly impractical or significantly more expensive than the ship they're meant to beat.

ECM was nerfed, and atm needs no tweaking IMO
Every Race has their big s++ecialisation or what you want to call it
Minmatar has some of the best raw damage speed and tank ships, guess why everyone is flying hurricane at the time
Amarr are Long-Range Evil, Abbadons will tear you apart from insane ranges
Gallente are the best Drone users whatsoever, making them actually pretty good against ecm in small gangs
And guess what, Caldaris specialisation is EWAR, and thus their ships have the most CPU and the best EWAR class
So, by nerfing ECM so far that anyone using it is without any protection, and even making ECM solo (unless using drones) completely useless no one is helped
Just because Minmatar is pretty weak against ECM and people tend to fly it often in PvP just means that only using Run&Gun or Ganking ships is not gonna end well

*Obviously the Dominix can as well, but really what kind of small gang lugs one of those around?
Quote:And guess what, Caldaris specialisation is EWAR, and thus their ships have the most CPU and the best EWAR class Yes, it is, hence the great EWAR ships. That doesn't give them a free pass to be overpowered, though. While you're not actually wrong on any point so far, you've not really given any reason why the OP idea is bad.
Quote:If you want to counter ecm, take a sensor boosting sensor dampener specialist with you Congratulations on being the first person in this entire thread to point out an ECM counter that isn't stupid. Damps are a pretty good module to use - with the drawback that their optimal range is actually pretty small. The result of this is that the damp ship is a pretty unreliable thing to use a lot of the time.

Well, if you want a reliable ecm counter, make a counter-ECM ECM fit, sensor booster for better si radius, caldari soecific jammers, and maybe use the kitsune to be a good and fast falcon or rook counter
the bad thing at this is that ecm ships tend to have a high sensor strength
however, the thing you want to do is make the ecm ships that are allready first target even more easy to kill though they atm have very little defense except their ecm, which after your kind of nerf will be totally useless as a defense and then suddenly the only EWAR completely useless solo
and about sensor dampening having too little range: 30km range and 60km falloff is not actually a bad range, and you can easily damp the targeting range of any ship to less then half its base targeting range with only two modules, and you dont need much time for your buddys to then get the drones attack the ecm ship |

Once you're in falloff, damp cycles only land half the time at best. That's why damps aren't reliable for this.
Then you've got the drones attacking - ok so we're assuming every ship on the field has about 70km+ of drone control range? Fair enough, not too far outside the bounds of possibility but not likely. Well, 1. My Falcon in particular has about 20k EHP and smartbombs. I think you can see for yourself what'll happen there. 2. This is for the shortest range ECM ships. The longer ranged ones can jam in excess of 100-150km. Good luck setting your drones on those unless you brought an Ishtar along. 3. You have the ECM ships' gang to contend with. That makes any counter a lot less clear-cut.
Quote:edit: and the best about sensor dampa is actually that they ARE reliable, they arent chance based at any way Correct - in optimal. In falloff, that goes out the window.

ECM nerfing has been around as long as ECM and CCP have no plans to do anything about it. It is overpowered when used in meta gaming but it's just another example of I-Win mentality in EVE. You can't use damps to protect your alt while he tackles you because Damps won't work at tackle range. You can use ECM to protect as many alts as you want because it's blanket treatment on your targeting but how many years later and CCP still look the other way?
Add a point to warp stab for every effective ECM cycle, that would solve the issue of meta chars ganking with I-Win ECM. Fleets could still tackle down a target that is ECM'ed but One man bands couldn't. |

i did not say ecm was easy to kill, but if the fleet can get a lock on it, it IS first target and they will APPROACH you, so range wont last long against a vaga or other ships,
20k EHP is NOTHING, most ships will tear you apart in under a minute

and dont say 150km range will help against every threat there is, that is IF you are at 150km range, and not if you jump through a gate and are suddenly in an enemy fleet at 5 km range, dont state situations that are highly unlikely as a given
also, if you fit only fightability (buffer, speed) and no ecm power (ecm upgrades in lows, meds full of ecm modules) on a falcon, you are pretty useless for your fleet, because then you can only jam about 1-3 targets the whole time
maybe you should think of a "fix" that doesnt make ecm completely balls and post it in a new thread

i thought about this a little bit, how about an Anti-ecm module saving you from one succesfull jam 100%?
maybe like a cap booster, it defends a succesfull jam with a charge, and needs to reload 20 seconds (ecm cycle time)
since ECCM does not work completely, and ecm counter is hard to manage, i guess this would be an actual kind of good counter and would still not break ecm in its entire function
Or maybe let ecm just take out some of your max locked targets, but not with a chance based success, but 100% success
this way you can fit against it by fitting auto targeting stuff or sensor boosters could be modified to add lockable targets for a ship it would be possible to fit against it, but when someone dedicates 2-3 jammers on you, you are jammed anyways, this of course limits the numbers of people the ecm user can jam |

You know, that thing ECM ships have more of than any non-sniper ship? How do you think ECM survives so well as it is? It's not like they're jamming the entire field, some ships will always be able to lock them, so why do they not die instantly every single time? Oh right yeah, because they're out of range of almost everything. So stop acting like just because a ship isn't jammed it can insta-kill every EWAR ship on the field. It doesn't work like that. Not being jammed is only the first of several obstacles you need to overcome to kill a decent EWAR pilot.
Quote:and dont say 150km range will help against every threat there is, that is IF you are at 150km range, and not if you jump through a gate and are suddenly in an enemy fleet at 5 km range, dont state situations that are highly unlikely as a given So basically ECM ships are fine because there are situations where the fleets they're in **** up horribly. Have you ever flown an ECM ship? Because it doesn't sound like it. It takes 2 slots to give a Falcon a 20k buffer, the rest goes to ECM. The resulting ship has 6 jammers with solid strength and range, and even has hislot point defences that can fend off non-sentry drones and a fair amount of missile fire. |

In that way ECM would become equal to other EVE e-war methods in that it is useful only is specific situations and and against specific ships instead of instant overwhelming force multiplier that can be used against any ship (except supper capitals and titians).
problem I see is that all ecm ships are such that without the ecm stopping the target locking them - they are dead. The ECM is their tank. This change would just mean that the targeted ship would only be unable to lock other ships in the short space of time it takes to rip the ecm ship a new one. |

Remove sensor strength and link jamming chance to sensor resolution. |

As one who has fought against ECM ships many times, I can say the ECM's are fine the way they currently are.
ECM ships are very fragile and if the jamming cycle fails they are good as dead.
ECM ships are not solo pwn mobiles as they have very little offensive capability, not to mention most of the mids would be used for ECM's, so they must either sacrifice point, prop, or other utilities to maintain their capabilities.
ECCM's easily reduces your chances of being jammed by half. You counter ECM by sending drones on them, using FoF missiles, smartbombs, disengaging and reengage, etc.
If you don't have the capabilities to kill the ECM ship you don't really have what it takes or planned poorly.
You proposal will make ECM ships rather weak to have. ECM is their tank, without it they are dead. |

ECCM needs A.)Buff (Maybe new complex ECCM mods for 1-2-3/10's?) B.)ECCM rigs ~50% boost per t1 rig |

Your comments reeks of fear, so I just had to check. And indeed, you are a perfect example of ECM not being fine. All you know how to fly is Sabres and Falcons, and you have basically 0 losses exactly due to Falcons. So of course you'd say they're fine, coz you're scared s**tless of an ECM nerf :-) My first PvP video: The Hunt |

If these guidelines are followed, you still shouldn't be able to lock the ship that put ECM drones on you, because the source of the jamming is not the ship. It's the drones. Therefore:
Sofia Wolf wrote:This would make ECM useless in solo ships...
This will not be true. ECM drones would be as effective in solo PvP as they have been.
Bubanni wrote:No thanks, ecm drones are already more powerful than they should be regardless of it being chance based... 5 light ecm drones have a 27.6% chance to jam a hurricane, while 1 multispectral ecm has 15% chance, and a ladar specific has 23% chance... ecm drones should not have a higher chance than a module (since the other ew drones don't either)
You need to learn how probability is calculated. Each Hornet EC-300 has 1 point of jamming strength. A Hurricane has 16 points of sensor strength. The formula for the chance to successfully jam something is the following:
Jamming strength / Sensor Strength
So, 1/16 = ~6%
Each EC-300 has a 6% chance to successfully jam a Hurricane. The probabilities don't stack together because each individual drone/jammer is counted separately. You don't get a 30% chance to jam a Hurricane with 5 EC-300s on it because they don't combine their superpowers and jam as one. |

You both have horrible fits. I've flown both Blackbirds and Scorpions(dual boxing ECM and DPS ships, mind you) for quite some time now, and in small gang PvP, the only tank you need is the warp button. If you're getting insta-popped because you don't have any tank, you need to re-evaluate your roles and how you play them.
[Blackbird, The only way.] Signal Distortion Amplifier II Signal Distortion Amplifier II
ECM - Spatial Destabilizer II ECM - Spatial Destabilizer II ECM - Phase Inverter II ECM - Phase Inverter II ECM - White Noise Generator II ECM - Ion Field Projector II
Medium 'Vehemence' Shockwave Charge Medium 'Vehemence' Shockwave Charge Medium 'Vehemence' Shockwave Charge [empty high slot]
Medium Targeting System Subcontroller I Medium Targeting System Subcontroller I Medium Signal Disruption Amplifier I
Smartbombs for drones, no need to be beyond 70km from the fight. You have to STAY ALIGNED when you fly an ECM boat. It doesn't matter what your tank is. If you see a ship with sniper capabilities land on grid, you warp out, OR, if you were planning this incredibly well, you warp to another tactical safe on the other side. Simple as that. To hell with everybody else, you're more useful alive than dead.
Now you know how to fly a blackbird like a pro.
With that said, I don't care one way or the other if this gets implemented. I'll still be a kickass ECM pilot who knows his ships and limitations, and I'll still jam your fleet, regardless of whether or not you can shoot me back, and I'll ALWAYS have my very first Scorpion. |

I like it. Possibly coupled with an EHP buff to pacify whiners, I could get behind it. Have a +1.
I'd back up Duchess and her arguments, as her arguments on how ECM is actually used are pretty cool, but the unverifiable claim of "I am an ECM pilot" on a character without combat history gets on my nerves.
