I've frequently seen indications of this both on forums(lol) and ingame(lol) and i cant refrain from making this post any longer.
nr1 "Minerals i mine myself are free." lets see...(heavily simplifyed) someone has self-mined minerals worth 100k isk... then manufactures an item.. wich he sells for 90k isk... possible profit=100% \o/ actual profit=90% /o\ wtf?! why!??! why do people biuld items and sell them AT LESS PROFIT then it would have generated to JUST SELL THE MINERALS?!?! i'm not even getting in to "datacores i get from my own R&D agents are free to" stuff
nr2 pvpers that are all like "wtf carebear stuffs gimmi more ships to pew pew yarr " (QR features any1 lol?) omfg?! "eve is a pvp game" "dont play unless you want to pvp" lets see with this one... pvp=ships to fly needed ships=player built whait.. what? PLAYERS build the ships that pvpers blow up?? eve has huge player driven industry going on? that couldn't possibly be the case could it? maybe there's a need to develope this industry system just like the combat system?
I'm NOT sayng people ARE stupid, just that some people SEEM TO BE stupid (ppl that seem stupid might be it to ofc) I'm also NOT saying this applys to everyone, i'm just hoping for some one giving me back my faith in players IQ
I won't say i'm not trolling hoping no one will call me a troll 'cause that would make me stupid |

Actually, the rule "Don't start sentences with a conjunction" is erroneous.
Language is the method through which people communicate. The purpose of communication is the transfer of meaning from one person to the next. The rules of language are defined by how the lanugage is used. The rules come AFTER the use of language, not before.
If someone starts a sentense with AND, and the person listening understands the meaning of the sentense, then successful communication has occurred. This is a way in which English is used, and so should be reflected in the rules, rather than disallowed.
The only "rule" that is left now, is that some people (language snobs) will look down on you if you "break" their little rule. If this isn't a problem for you, then good, but if such a snob is a potential empolyer / client, then you should be aware of it.
And yes, everyone is stupid to some extent... anyone who says differently is simply more stupid than average. |

This is true, but the discussion was taken into the technical discussion by the initial aggression, towards the use of "a lot" as a single word, and as such my reply towards the use of "and" in the beginning of the sentence was valid. |

Duh.... Yes?
No people are not stupid they just are not able to think further then their own little world. They think that everyone around them must be stupid because they don't see the world like they do, no mater if they are PvP players, PvE players, miners, buildiers or forum posters all of us have been and will in the future in some way or the other be guilty of limiting our views and ideas by the every day reality that we live rather then looking around us and seeing that there is more out there and our points of view might not be right.
So in short people behave stupid but that has nothign to do with stupidity it is simply because we are ignorant of the world around us. |

I can answer this one cause I sometimes do this and I KNOW that I am making less money selling the minerals rather than the manufactured item.
The reason is because I like to make stuff, and the process of creating an item is more interesting to me than maxing my ISK returns. When I sell a ship, it still gives me a weird fuzzy feeling knowing that somewhere out there in that big EVE universe is some guy in a Tristan that *I* made. Maybe he's a pirate, maybe he's a noob upgrading to a new ship, whatever it is, he (or she) has it, and I made it, and knowing that is more enjoyable than squeezing out a few more meaningless ISK.
EVE is a game (for most people) so everything that people do is altered by the "fun quotient". This is why there are sooooo many *newbs* out there doing the things that don't make them the max isk/hour possible, because they would rather be having fun than watching their wallet grow.

Your maths fails because 100k is not 200% of 0k. You are saying that you are making 100% profit by mining 100k of minerals, but profit is defined as (sell_price - buy_price)/(buy_price) . You didn't pay anything for the minerals, so the buy price is 0. This leads to a divide-by-zero error, resulting in an undefined answer. Profit is meaningless unless it costs you something to make that money.
However, you are correct in saying that minerals should be valued at the sell price on the market. A good rule of thumb is to treat every operation you do (mining, refining, manufacturing, trading, etc) as a separate transaction where you buy the materials at market price, then sell the products back at market price. You don't actually need to buy or sell them, but pretend you are when calculating profits. If any operation makes you a net loss, then DO NOT DO THAT OPERATION.

IQ completely fails to take into account the various types of intelligence that we all have.
EG: an athlete who is capable of running a four minute mile. Typically, this wouldn't be considered particularly intelligent.
Consider, however, how difficult it is to make a walking robot that can do this (currently not possible). The fact is, that running very fast is a hugely complex mathematical problem, requiring a solution to many differential equations.
The human brain has to solve these equations (to some degree of imprecision) in order for any of us to run. Regardless of the fact that this occurs at a completely subconcious level, it is still requires a high degree of intelligence.
So, in terms of 'motor control' intelligence, an athlete is far superior to a rocket scientist. Obviously, the athlete knows sod all about rockets.
Can anyone say who is more intelligent than whom? ---- Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa*coughcough*aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrr!! |

Whoa there champ, I think the OP is really copmmenting about the difference between people who HAVE a IQ...and those that actually USE their I!Q.
What used to be referred to in Ye Olden Days as the difference between "being stupid" and "be3ing a moron".
Being STUPID by that definition is someone who actually has a normal intelligence factor but simply does not use it - the same kind of idiot that'll toss a alcoholic drink into a lit fireplace simply because they didn't want it...and then are suprised when they get their clothes singed by the resultant fireball.
Being a MORON back then was being of subnormal intelligence - usually kept in "sanatoriums" for their own protection, as well as the protection of others.
Isn't it amazing how language has changed, even though people have not? These days, BOTH terms can refer to people who don't think things through before they act...the instinctive button-pushers, those who trust their autopilot, etc etc...

This reminds me of when the first brought out 'non breakable' bottles. My brother bought a pint of rhum, he was sitting in the living room and chucked it up in the air. Let it land on the floor. The cover split in two but the bottle did not break. All the rhum poored out.
That was not uninformed. That was just stupid.

But of course, the so called "IQ" that is so popular is simply a measure for logical intelligence. It doesn't take into account creativity, emotional understanding or any other form of intelligence. Pure, simple, cold logic. Science, if you will.

The reason for selling at below mineral values is to produce isk from the sale as fast as possible. Yes, one could simply sell the minerals and get 100m isk in 2 days, or make an item with them and sell it for 90m today. In their books, 90m today is better than 100m in 2 days.

PLAYERS build the ships that pvpers blow up?? eve has huge player driven industry going on? that couldn't possibly be the case could it? maybe there's a need to develope this industry system just like the combat system?
The reason for this is because of what pvpers do, versus what industrialists do. When pvpers get new ships, it opens up new tactical situations for them to factor into an already complex system, making it more fun. When industrialists get new ships, they get to make isk faster. I imagine CCP thinks that combat can always use more tactical variation, but industrialists make enough isk/hour.

Unrelated to my above two points, in general, yes I find the majority of people stupid. |

Yes people are stupid. Even worse than the ones selling 100k worth of minerals in the form of a 90k ISK item, are the ones trying to "educate" them to sell the item for 100k ISK.
Where's the profit margin for the real traders, if the "minerals I mined are free" crowd get all edumicated?
And you can start a sentence with a conjunction. But it's something you only do for dramatic effect.

Edited by: Sagacious Z on 19/01/2009 02:45:51 Dear Annacron Adaptive:
You asked if "people are stupid". Let us review your post: Paragraph 1: I, not "i". Can't, not "cant".
Paragraph 2: Cap the "i". Let's, not "lets". Simplified, not "simplifyed". Which, not "wich". Your math fails in a galactic sized manner. 100-90 = 10 / 100 = 10% loss, NOT A 90% GAIN!!!!!! Build, not "biuld". Than, not "then". Cap the "i'm". Cap "i".
Paragraph 3: Give me, not "gimmi". If you desire to use slang, it is "gimmee", not "gimmi". Don't, not "dont". Let's, not "lets". Wait, not "whait". Eve has a huge..., not "Eve has huge". Put a comma after the word "case". Develop, not "develope".
Paragraph 4: Saying, not "sayng". Applies, not "applys". Someone, not "some one". Players' IQ, not "players IQ". Will not, not "won't". I'm, not "i'm". You used a double negative in your last sentence: "won't" + "not trolling". Because, not "'cause".
Once more, your question was if "people are stupid".
It is very possible your answer is imbedded within your own comments regarding your question, so I won't expand on this further.
Regarding "why would a player sell an item at a loss"? If so, that could be a smart move if the goal is to drive a competitor in the trading arena out of the local market and this tactic succeeds. Also, time is precious, and perhaps the player decided the second or two it takes to sell the item is preferable to the additional few seconds it takes to recycle the item.
So, sometimes people are not as stupid as you may believe they are. Then again, read your full original post once more, paying attention to spelling and correct grammar usage, and ask yourself once more this question "if people are stupid".
The EVE community is much smarter than you give them credit for, and new players are excused as there is a steep learning curve. I believe that the GREAT majority of our players can spell well and have basic grammar skills(as we see here in your post, a rare few fail) and the average age is in the 30 year range. There are quite a few players 50 and above, many with vast experience in their careers. I was VP of two Fortune 500 companies, have a BS in Business, I am Oracle Certified, I have a CFP, a 214 license and other advanced educational assets, and I was "smart enough" to be able to retire early so I can play EVE--there are many others like me, with similar backgrounds, who are "not so stupid" as you paint us. I was introduced to the game by a highly intelligent business owner who owns his own successful software development company. CCP and the EVE community should be very proud of the average intelligence of their player base.
Finally, do not criticize your fellow players. Be respectful. Just ask questions without the questioning the intelligence of your fellow players, especially since, in this case, you must have been looking in a mirror when you asked "if people are stupid".
Cheers!

Dear Annacron Adaptive:
Your math fails in a galactic sized manner. 100-90 = 10 / 100 = 10% loss, NOT A 90% GAIN!!!!!!
Someone else attempted to call the OP on this "wrong math", but both of you failed Reading Comprehension. The 100% Profit is selling the minerals at 100K ISK. By selling the manufactured unit for 90K ISK they make 90% of the 100K they could have got had they sold the minerals without building. That is the 90% actual profit when compared to the sell-the-minerals total potential profit.
You guys fail at failing others. |
