I think it is important that we have an idea of how many accounts are running EVE Online under linux. I'm guessing that even the devs don't really know due to the number of people running the windows client under wine. Please post here how many EVE accounts you run under linux. Also, please post if you would like to run EVE under linux, but don't due to performance issues (official client blows and you have issues with wine). I will keep a running tally here. I myself run 2 accounts under linux using wine.
Total number of EVE accounts running under Linux
- Total under wine : 2 - Total under Official Client: 0 - Total unspecified : 0 ------- Total accounts under Linux : 2
Total number of EVE accounts that would like to run under Linux, but don't currently: 0 ________________________

I use crossover which is "basically" wine. It lets me use more resolutions (widescreen) in EVE than official wine for some reason. I run 2 accounts also

I don't think this is a good way to guage the number, most people are just happily playing on Linux without having to come to the "Linx" forum here.
The could include some code to check the Wine entries in the registry, and combine that with usage of the Official linux client to get a decent idea. |

I agree, but it's better than nothing, if people want to do some plugs else where to get them to post, that would work. I'm pretty sure that because most of us use wine, CCP is seeing it as a windows client connecting. |

Sadly, I only use this account for skill checks and quick in station things. A few months back, I installed a second smaller hard drive with XP on it again, and use that OS if I am going to be playing for longer than 30 minutes.
I may go back to using EVE w/Wine, but for the time being, this is my current setup. |

I've been using wine for years... but it's not an optimal solution and i was always hoping for the "official client" to get to a level where you could use it just as the windows client... But with them stopping the linux support that hope just vanished... Of course noone used that official client. It was a piece of ****... People were waiting for ccp to release a decent linux client.... Probably wine won't be able to handle ambulation...

When I play Eve, it's on the windows platform. It doesn't crash if I multitask with the old client, but the premium pack makes it choke.
I can't wait for March 10th. It'll be just like running the official Linux client again, only on Windows (slower and crash-happy) á ----------------------------------------- "Kill a man one is a murderer; kill a million, a conqueror; kill them all, a God." -- Jean Rostand |

Do you have two monitors? I have no problem with running a scout, hauler or salvage alt in one window and my main on the other. But then I play on wine.
It crashes about as often as the native windows client my friends run. Plus I have the problems with sound. (Thanks pulseaudio team, you only set Linux desktop sound support back by about a year.)
However, before PvPing I'd strongly recommend tuning your system. Windows is 'you get what was in the box' unless you buy more, buy more, buy more. Linux lets me tweak a lot of things (see some of the other threads here.)
I run: 2 accounts both under wine 0 under the official |

I run 3 accounts under WINE on Linux and under Parallels on OSX. My little brother (lives with me while I put him through college) runs 2 accounts under WINE almost exclusively.
That's a total of 5 accounts under WINE and 3 also frequently under Parallels on OSX.
This is a TERRIBLE decision, but not entirely surprising since they are a Microsoft shop right down to their choice of SQL server. My work occurs entirely on unix, linux and osx and the only "Windows" I have are as guest instances. I can understand cutting ancient technology as with the "premium lite" decision, but to cut Linux? That doesn't give me much hope for OSX (which is my primary gaming platform for EVE; Linux being my secondary).
I'd just as well play on OSX than Linux at this point, but it is frustrating that they're going to keep one and not the other. THey should be similar enough that it's not a huge pain and even if I'm not doing most of my gaming under linux at the moment, I want that choice.
I understand they don't have the manpower that a Blizzard does for maintaining so many branches, but it's the ability to play on a variety of systems that draws a lot of players to EVE and keeps them here. Not to mention, the same kind of person frequently drawn toward complex games like EVE (spreadsheets -- whoo!) are very often the same type of person who prefers a more powerful OS - be it BSD, Solaris, some flavor of linux, OSX or what have you.
This seems like a very crippling decision. |

o/ Linux representing. Sorry CCP I am never going back to windows, and i think your makeing a long term mistake dropping Linux support. I suggest dropping your transgaming requirement and using WINE to make your software run. That and get on board with OpenCL and OpenGL3. Windows and DX has been a stable business model for along time but the masses are dissatisfied and the tide is turning.

I do not have any trouble with the official client on my laptop, I did have some difficulty getting premium Eve running on wine. |

I tried official a number of times, but it *never* worked for me. Wine always seems to have worked. There are some issues with premium client+premium graphics and current devel version of Wine. Eve runs very stable with Wine and premium client+classic graphics.
If CCP choses to develop an OpenGL frontend for Apple platform, then they really should get it to work under Linux as well. But if they just plan on using Cadega for Apple, then don't bother with Linux. Cadega is just not good enough for me (ie. segfaults at start).
They would be better for them to use Wine as a debugging platform. If Eve crashes or doesn't run correctly under stable/devel. version of wine, it would be great if CCP could exclude possibility of bugs in Eve and simply report bugs with Wine so they can be fixed.
So please, CCP, "semi-officially" support Linux through Wine.

Official client was awful - I only used it on my notebook for skilling. If the normal client will stop working unser wine, maybe, I'm gone ... I've been happy, when I read, that a new premium client for linux should be released, and now that
If they really keep on working for a mac client, why not also for an linux client?

2 accounts, both running the official client, primarily during the (many) times that I can't stop everything and boot into Windows.
I'll likely switch to running under Wine, but it might be a while. Linux is where I do most of my work, and I can't afford the risk of breaking my development environment chasing down cutting-edge Wine dependencies. Looks like more reason to go idle. I'm holding off on starting yet another account until I figure out how much hassle tracking Wine updates will be.

I can't get the official client running well under 64 bit linux, so I got it running in Wine in about 10 minutes. Was running under wine 2 years ago and now I find that the Classic client runs faster and more stabily under Wine on Linux then it does in Windows.
I guess being an RHCT with 10 years Linux experience helps me a bit though. [Y] Yorik EVE is a game, THIS is real. |

Wine (used Wine-doors to install it) on Ubuntu. Classic runs beautifully well, have an odd graphic glitch with premium, but am sure will get to the bottom of that eventually.
CCP: looks like testing EVE on Wine is the way to go, judging from the posts here so far.
Might I suggest to fellow Linux and Wine users here that those who sensibly can volunteer to (a) submit bug-reports on new builds of EVE and (b) if CCP's interested, volunteer to help beta test EVE on Wine before it gets offiially released? (I note that in email correspondence with CCP I was told that they received very few bug reports re the official client. Clearly this is because as Linux users we have options, so rather than use something reported to eb shoddy, we go to something better, rather than us having to twiddle our thumbs until the only option open to us is fixed.)
Put me down for (a) (bug reportng) for definite, and I'll happily try my best at (b), beta-testing, if allowed.

The last time I tried to submit a bug report, the system refused to accept my gzipped log files (and also refused to accept them after i unzipped them) because they were the wrong type of file or something. If this has been fixed, I'll start trying to send in reports again.

I used to run the premium version with premium disabled, even that my computer support the premium, but it runs better in classic mode. I tested the new SISI client and even with the premium enabled I still have issues with station graphics and stuck on login. Anyway, count me in to support the "we want to play under linux too" petition.

Also, please post if you would like to run EVE under linux, but don't due to performance issues (official client blows and you have issues with wine).

I haven't used Windoze since Eve stopped working on Win98. For me, if it stops working with Wine then I stop paying CCP. No, ifs or buts about it.

at least I did until this last patch. the premium client will not run properly without pixel shading on. and when I turn on pixle shading all the text in the game becomes a while box. I now cannot play eve until this is addressed. if anyone knows another workaround for the pixel shading issues please advise. Subvert the dominant paradigm. |

I use linux on my desktop because of the work I do. I liked the fact that linux was supported, but now it is not. Even though it is not officially supported anymore, I hope CCP does not fall into the normal windoze way of doing things, bloated and ineffecient.
Models did not show up for me when I tested Apocrypha on SiSi, but hope that it works now.

Too bad Linux is not officially supported anymore, but I never got EVE to work through Cedega and as I suspect there's a lot of that around there's no wonder the CCP guys thought Linux was not the way to go..
Wine works more or less perfectly, however. I just prey that it stays that way so I don't have to pay for an OS which I consider inferior in order to play my favorite (or, in fact, only) game. ;)

n.b. Apocrypha seems to have greatly increased performance, and high shader + 8xAA is slightly slower than high + HDR + bloom + AA on vista (9600gt, ubuntu 8.10). Not actually tried shooting anything yet - but it might be good enough to actually use for more than skill changes, travel, and occasional mission ;)

Two accounts. At some point soon I am going to bail from Windows entirely-- probably when they ask me to shell out money for the bugfixes that they should have put in Fistula in the first place, that is Windows 7. If Eve isn't running on Linux, you lose 300 per year from me alone, in perpetuity.
I just don't understand why you would want to drop linux support. Linux users tend to be highly-connected loudmouths with wide online networks of acquaintances. There may not be many of us, comparatively, but we undoubtedly influence disproportionate numbers of other people.
Furthermore, linux users are huge geeks who love Star Trek. Thus they should be a perfect target market for Internet Spaceships. If I were CCP I would do the best I could to get the Eve Online client added to the official Ubuntu repositories...

CCP Claims about 300k accounts or so. So 500 would be 1/600 or 1/6 of 1%. Even if rounded up, that is 0.2%
1% would be 3k.
Even in terms of max concurrent users, Linux only reaches 1%. Max concurrent was about 50k so 1% of that is 500.

After hours of fighting with it (and it locking up my machine some half dozen times) I got it working well enough to run missions and another account salvaging behind it. Wine works, it's just a pain in the ass to GET it to, especially with ATI cards.

The main thing IMHO that prevents EvE from being properly cross-platform is DirectX... it's mostly a python app with a set of windows api calls tacked on AFAIK... I wouldn't cancel EvE if it became impossible to run it under Linux, however, I would definitely play much less and downsize to 1 or 2 accounts. |

I am also on the side line getting Eve to work on my older laptop with wine. Came across d3d mod by transgaming called swiftshader that enables older gfx cards to work once again.

They don't work, as ATI has moved a lot of cards to Legacy (some which aren't even actually that old tbh) and mine was one of them. The X Org drivers therefore no longer provide 3D support for my card, so while I can do general stuff, any gaming is out now.
Think I'm going to go Nvidia as I'm very disappointed with ATI support in general over the last couple of years, and I've always been a big fan of their cards till now. .

I have run Eve in several different clients (Full Cedega client, Crossover Games, and Wine). I have currently run the Eve Client under two distributions Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and Fedora 10 (at first with Crossover Games and now under the official release of Wine). I have been able to successfully run the clients without too many issues (although if you use Pulse for audio this can be a literal pain).
I can run multiple clients, although at times one of the clients will crash, as such when I am running multiple sessions I tend to use my Windoze 7 box (which is really only running Eve at the time ).
I really wish there was a full native client for Linux at some point, as I am looking to just move away from Windows completely, and this is about the only application I use a Windows machine for; it's nice to have a dream at any rate .

Edited by: Meverkal on 04/08/2009 16:24:26 Yo, I'm running Eve under Linux, wine 2.2.24, as wine 2.2.25 had some stability issues. Debian Lenny with compiz, Core 2 Duoo E3100 I think 2Gb DDR3 1Tb HDD, and Nvidia GForce 9800.
Cheers,

Roger - 1 account.
I am desperately trying to run eve under wine in Ubuntu 9.04 64bit. I have followed the instructions several times...each time getting to a different place before giving up. I can't wait until I don't need to reboot into windows anymore.
Better support from ati/nvidia would probably also help.

I've more or less played with this account on Linux since the very first day (1 Year and 9 Months), and I'll never go back to Windows after 3 years of Linux.

Originally by: ThaMa Gebir Wine none.
Would use if I could figure out how to on my netbook.
Linux dual boot at home, not as yet tested or tried, but will very soon.
Finally took the BIG plunge.
I have *had* to install linux because the hadd wasn't recognised by windows/corrupt iso or whatever.
Installed Ubuntu linux, complete newbie and installed eve under the latest wine.
Runs well.
Happy now.
