Hey Curzon, if you are quitting, I'd very much like my initial investment back. Look at it this way, you taught an investment newbie a very important lesson (don't invest what you can't lose). I've been honest with you in our Eve-Mail convos. Tried to contact you ingame but for some reason it won't let me.
Anyways, this is my shot in the dark. Won't fudge up numbers, my previous posts where I invested haven't been edited.
I hope I get my stuff back... if not, I'll keep my clean record of everything I invest in is a scam.
(Hopes I'm not too late)

Originally by: Vaerah Vahrokha Rep is bad because it can be built and engineered. You mention General Newbold and this shows you don't see the real issue. It's not with the "5B scam, if IQ > 20 = scam detected" but those who have a smidge of brain can gather tens of billions and then scam. Those are the danger.
A guy with 5B can act and boast like he had 50. He can have a shiny web site, an old character. He can have a collection of T2 BPOs or a State Raven. This will make gullible investors fall like fleas onto his trap, "BECAUSE OF REP".
So - since there's an unofficial "scam them more" race going there - one day we'll read about "hey guys I managed to scam you 1 trillion, aren't I l33t for this?" (assuming EBANK is not that one already).
And the guy WILL have this sublime well built up rep and the bunch of morons will smell the rep and fall for it.
It's really true. Those unable to learn from their mistakes are doomed repeating them.
MD is the testament to the truest of a darwinian humanity: trolls, flamers, scammers, thieves live all here and feed of dumb fat wallets whose brain is well inferior to their cash.
I think we are not thinking of the same kind of rep. For me, rep includes the things you mentioned (character age, wealth), but much more importantly experience making isk and trustworthiness, usually based on past investments. If someone has already taken 20B in unsecured funding, it is pretty safe to trust them with 20B again, whereas an unknown asking for 20B unsecured would be suspicious. I think we all agree on this.
On the other hand, it is true that rep can be built up, and a lot of people will fall for that. Just look at this thread. Curzon didn't have any investment rep, but he projected a fake rep of wealth that convinced a lot of people. We have also seen plenty of people trying to build up rep by taking progressively larger investments. However, you can usually tell if you are careful.
Originally by: flakeys Come on peole say names .. just stating 2 persons who possibly will scam is not enough to say told you so and you know it
Yeah. "2 of the biggest names" could be a lot of people, and it is fairly certain that there will be 2 big scams by big names at some point, so saying that doesn't mean much.

Don't know why gallchecker did post that statement - my reply was not motivated by the desire to be "right" (then I would have thrown some names into the discussion), but by the hope to get a few people to think for themselves.
Reputation is often used like a precomputed statement on some persons trustworthiness. Problem is that the group arriving at a consensus on some person's integrity/trustworthiness (i.e. the forum regulars) has a consistently bad track record when it comes to false negatives (false positives usually have the means to disprove any substantial accusations).
Second point is that auditors/external accountants cannot prevent a scam - they can just try to make the build-up for a scam a little harder. If the plan is to "take the money and run away" an auditor doing monthly income statements etc. can obviously do nothing to stop the scammer.
Third, in EVE it's "too big to survive", not "too big to fail".
Fourth, people get bored of EVE. If you are bored, the usual assumptions about profit maximization/rationality become pretty meaningless. It can be way more fun to watch the surprise and excited chattering after you've burned a "trustworthy" character than to go from bond <n> to bond <n+1>.
It's fun to exceed expectations, but once expectations have adjusted and paying out dividends becomes "business as usual" running a public offering means a lot of work/responsibility/commitments without much direct gratification. Result: you get bored.
In conclusion - before investing ask yourself "would I invest, if the investee was an unknown? why not?" and "how would I go about selling this proposal if I were a scammer?"

Well, I hate to say I told you so... no wait, I LOVE to say I told you so!!
Lets go over this lesson AGAIN shall we: If the plan makes no sense then investing isk into it is stupid. Rep is irrelevant if the business plan is crap, and in this case it was freaking ridiculous. Curzon was often evasive and unclear yet most lapped it all up, just because his name was Curzon Dax. How many Ionia's, Fast Learner's, Ricdic's and Curzon's is it going to take?!

What we really don't need is more "I told you so..." . That's so easy to say. You talk like it was us who did something "wrong", we did make an investment and it came out bad, but what can we do? kill ourselves because "you, already told us"? give me a break.
BTW I haven't got any ISK back, so I guess Cruzon is just trying to look like Robin Hood Gonna say it again, what a sad way of leaving a game with such big comunity.
Cheers!

Does "Social Engineering" = lying, to self-important nerds now?

Social engineering is the act of manipulating people into performing actions or divulging confidential information. While similar to a confidence trick or simple fraud, the term typically applies to trickery or deception for the purpose of information gathering, fraud, or computer system access; in most cases the attacker never comes face-to-face with the victim.
From wikipedia
So, sounds like "social engineering" is a fancy word for conning someone, so yes, essentially just lying and stealing, though some scams are more involved. The TV show Lost had some great episodes about this.

Wow, you really need to get off these forums, as well as EvE and go sign up for that GED program. May take you a few years to complete it, but at least you should better comprehend & follow when two or more sentences are put together in a post.

Wow, how does it feel to be so condescending in regards to his intelligence while in reality, you're the one who doesn't get it? It was a joke - a tasteless one, but a joke nonetheless. Perhaps your own sense of superiority is a bit misplaced?

Do not continue posting questions or feedback to Curzon either here or ingame. He will not be responding. Curzon has left EVE and all of his wealth has been gifted to others. The last thing to go is the character itself which is being sold here http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1241257
Do not contact this character either as it will soon no longer exist |

The terrible quality of the offering was pretty clear, but it seems that most people did not think that it would actually be a scam.
