10.4 was released 4.5 years ago. The last update to it was released over 2 years ago.
A lot of things have happened to the OS since that time and while I understand that you aren't happy about the situation, what do you expect CCP to do? Devote numerous manpower hours and equipment to test something so outdated?
Out of interest to those it may concern, I seem to recall that you are able to install the "update version" of 10.6 that only costs $29 on Macs running 10.4 too. But I am sure someone can confirm or deny that statement here.
Solana, though we are discussing the Mac client here your comment begs me to bring up the fact that Windows XP SP2 is supported and that it has been released in August 2004. This is more than 5 years ago, yet it is still supported (SP2c was released in 2007, thus about as old as Tiger).
I wonder what were the technical reasons to drop support for Tiger yet maintain it for Windows XP.

Though, I try to know as little about Windows as possible, I believe that Microsoft maintains reverse compatibility with all previous versions of Windows, which is why Windows is generally clunky. New Apple operating systems aren't reverse compatible, so they are generally faster, and can be released more frequently.
For instance, programs have to be re-released each time Apple comes out with a new OS, whereas you can still use very, very old programs on a windows machine. This, at least, is what I was told.

I can think of several reasons for this. XP is still the largest Windows in terms of users I believe? Because of that, drivers (like for your videocard) still see updates. A major contributing factor to this is the failure Vista turned out to be I imagine. This is not something that happens on the Mac side.
And specifically videodrivers is a big one. You can't get drivers for your MacOS from any supplier other than Apple, and only when Apple chooses to release something. On the Windows side however, you can grab updates for your card from the actual hardware manufacturer several times per year. No matter what Microsoft themselves are up to. This is something that ends up being a problem for gamers on Macs.

I do have the $29 Snow Leopard disc, and I think I'm going to preemptively upgrade since it seems I can do it without wiping out my current OS install. Nothing else I run has any problems with 10.4.11, but you gotta do what you gotta do to get EVE running.
I'm having problems downloading the full client anyway, so maybe the upgrade will fix that too... -- Man With The Plan, Starbase Setter-Upper, Doesn't Like Bunnies |

I'm running 10.4.11 and it won't even start after a full download. I knew my Pro was showing a little grey, but being left in the cold sucks more than a little bit. Believe it or not I do more than Eve on my computer; I'll probably have to look at getting that $169 box set. Which I can't afford. Who knows, maybe my graduate school software site has a discount available....

I have had the same problem with being unable to get in-game with a pilot subjected to multiple client freezes.
I keep multiple clients on my hard drive because sometimes I run with the smallest window, and that messes up the window placements. Each client has it's own prefs folder. They all share the resources folder in the application package. If the resources had become corrupted, it would probably have ruined all the clients. For now, because I have so many clients, I always have one prefs folder for a working client. When a client refuses to let me enter the game, replace files until it works again. Don't get me started on how that messes up my client's UI :)
So far, I have narrowed it down to the p_drive folder.
Of course, it could be a random file which becomes corrupted, but as it continues to happen I will continue to isolate it.
I submitted a bug report with all my experiences too.

After upgrading from 10.4 to 10.6, I was able to get the game running normal for about a day. Now its crashed for the 1st time, with about 10 error boxes popping up and locking the game. I was unable to read the boxes.
- What you were doing at the time of the crash. running a radar site, great timing
- What Version of OS X you are running. 10.6
- What hardware and specifically what graphics card you have. macbook pro 2.2 ghz, 2 gb ram graphics: ATI Radeon X1600:
Chipset Model:ATY,RadeonX1600 Type:GPU Bus:PCIe PCIe Lane Width:x16 VRAM (Total):256 MB Vendor:ATI (0x1002) Device ID:0x71c5 Revision ID:0x0000 ROM Revision:113-xxxxxx-158 EFI Driver Version:01.00.158
- A cider Trace of when you are trying to start the client back up but it fails to load (Info about Traces can be found at the bottom of this page: http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Mac_Bug_Reporting) I'll work on this
- Any workaround you have found. I've looked for the preferences folder shown in the above CCP post, still not there <insert witty comment here> |

How does a Cider trace work for the "Splash-screen + hang" bug? It never crashes, it just sits there. Force Quit does not generate a log file.

Very good point, Solana. I had not thought about the driver issue. It may get complicated if Cider makes use of newer drivers to match the updates on DirectX (the main reason they have to use Cider is DirectX, I think).

After crashing up my MacPro this morning 5-6 times, I deleted the entire install, including prefs and transgaming files. Re-installed from a fresh client download and ran for about 4 hours without problem.
My MacBookPro suffered the same fate. It just crashed after about 30 minutes after upgrading from Apoc to Dominion. I just deleted EVE and will reinstall before trying it again.

I guess that i am also one of the few 10.4.xx users (or not so few?) I am very happy with the way my computer works and everything else i have works just fine on this OS. Im not interetsed in Snow Leopard. Is it possible for CCP to allow us to use apocrypha still? It worked on my compter just fine while i was using Tiger.

EDIT: That'll teach me. 2 minutes after posting that, it crapped out trying to dock up. ... no crash dialog, the screen just froze.

i dont have thewillpower to bother going through all the steps to log in again , but was also curious to know, given that this looks to be a file going corrupt somewhere, if people's time machine is running when the client fails....
...though that wouldn't make difference to those suffering the same problem on pre-leopard OS....
just fueling the rumor-fire

From your home directory, go to Library/Preferences/"Eve Online Preferences"/p_drive
on my machine, this is the folder that had to be replaced. And it's STILL not a meaningful fix, just not as bad as all the prefs :)

Originally by: CCP Casqade Hi,
Please try clearing your cache and settings by removing the "EVE Online preferences" folder under Library/Preferences.
1. Open finder 2. Click your username to the left under "Places" 3. Open Library 4. Open Preferences 5. Locate the folder "EVE Online preferences" and move it to the trash
This works to get the game going again, but so far I've had to do this twice. After the first time the game crashed while I was flying through high sec and I ended up in my pod thanks to Faction Navy Aggro.
Right now I don't honestly feel confident in the client to fly in combat on my Mac. Not trying to ***** because I expected some problem with a major upgrade, but I hope this gets sorted soon.

Same problem for me. Ran fine until this evening. However was in same system all of that time until this evening. Then traveled about 5 jumps or so on autopilot and crash/no restart even with rebooting. Removed preferences, caches, and transgaming files and was able to get back into game, but crashed again on attempting to jump.
Running: MacBook Pro, Intel Core Duo 2.16GHz, ATI Radeon X1600, OS 10.5.8
Trying to download fresh client now but taking 2 hours. Any way to save any of those preferences (I have a copy) or do I have to assume they are corrupt? Be a shame to lose all the notes, bookmarks, buddy lists...
BTW, love all the tweaks in Dominion and hope it works soon for Mac. ------------------ Dr Soze Chief of Staff - C.O.R.E. |

Edited by: Viperthe2 on 03/12/2009 05:53:24 I have the same issues as everyone else. Started off after my second hour of enjoying the new client by getting a strange disconnect and freezing making me have to force quit. After i did that i could get to the login screen and put in my username and password, but it wont get past the loading bars. They'll all load up all the way and just as its about to go to the character selection screen it gets stuck and i have to force quit. I've followed CCP's advice on deleting and starting fresh, its worked for the last 20 minutes but i'm not enthusiastic about flying around 0.0 with the chance of another epic fail.
System: 17" Macbook Pro 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo 2BG 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM 220GB free hard disk space
ATY, RadeonX1600 graphics card 256MB VRAM
running Snow Leopard
Also.. Recommendation for those of you that don't want to lose your bookmarks, fittings and settings. Move the EVE Online preference folder and original client(cuz im not sure if they're linked) out of the library completely to say your desktop and save it there. Then when you install a fresh client it will make a new one in the library. You wont have your stuff in game but you can save the data for future use when CCP fixes the issue, you can put your original EVE Online preferences folder back in the library and delete the "temp" work around one.

You should be ok once they fix the other problems with the client.
Is anybody else just keeping a good copy of their Preferences stored on a thumb drive for all the reinstalls?

Numerous freezes & crashes. Occured while entry/exit of warp in gate approximity. It either froze, or I got a blank screen or that "connection lost" window spam. Afterwards I wasnt able to start the game respectively getting past character screen.
After removing cache/preferences and a fresh client install I was able to get into the game again but it didnt solve the problem of crashes. Did this twice and still got crashes wasnt able to run EVE afterwards.
Another notice: split second freezes/lags whenever approaching gates or moving ship again after having used gates. The same lags also after undocking/before docking at stations. Thw whole game runs more laggy than with Apocrypha. Feels like I'm playing on a low-end machine.
