The thread you refer to is this thread. The suggestions at the beginning of the thread don't solve the problems but you are able to at least log in. After 20 to 30 minutes you crash again and need to start from square one.

Is there any reason why this issue (and link to the workaround) do not appear in the Dominion 1.0.1 known issues list at http://www.eveonline.com/updates/knownissues.asp
It seems pretty well known to be an issue at this point. :)

The reason I posted a link to the workaround is because I updated it with new steps. Disabling sound might make the crashes appear less frequently.

So reading after reading all the comments, I guess that either us Tiger users are going to have to upgrade to Snow Leopard, or wait for an updated patch or perhaps both - as the people using Snow Leopard still seem to have issues.
Is there any information as to roughly when a new update for Eve will be ready to download?
And I guess this would be a full re-install of Eve as us Tiger users can't even launch the application.
In the meantime I guess I'll start looking at reactivating my Wow account, or I'm going to get SO bored!

Hi Guys Strange - I feel relieved that I am not the only one suffering the new update issues for apple machines - however it doesn't detract from the frustration of having this problem in the first place!
I recently (2 weeks ago) purchased a new iMac 27" i5 Quadcore / 4 gb / ATI Radeon 4580 memory dream boat. Loading Eve was quite an experience - compared to my old windows machine (out of this world) - and I dont want to go back!
Following the recommendations, I am still experiencing issues with Dominion + patch. Much the same as most in this arena (including - strangely CAPs lock!) If this isn't resolved soon I may be forced either to return to my old Windows machine or leave the game, I hope neither. Come on CCP please sort this problem - and soon !

I'm running a white macbook... Apocrypha used to run on OSX but not very well so I installed bootcamp and ran it on XP. Which worked awesome far better than OSX but since Dominion release I can't even get it to run on XP. The client will start then the screen goes black and I have to turn off my computer and then turn back on... the only success I have had is uninstalling and downloading the entire client again.
after reinstalling the client it will work right after installation and I can log in and undock but once i jump to a gate or anything it goes black again. Still have control of the mouse but that's it nothing else works. CTL ALT DEL doesn't even work. Have to restart my computer then the same problem persists, once i launch the client screen goes black and i can move the mouse and hear the eve music but that's it... and back to reboot and then the pattern repeats itself.
Only way to log in to change skills is to redownload the client, install and hope it doesn't crash before I set my skill.... hope this helps

Originally by: CCP Casqade 5. Locate the folder "EVE Online preferences" and move it to the trash 6. Launch the game 7. Press ESC 8. Go to the Audio & Chat tab 9. Uncheck the "Audio enabled" 10. Play the game
I trashed the preferences, started up, accepted the EULA, disabled sound, logged in, EVE crashed while loading character portraits.
So I trashed the preferences again, started up, accepted the EULA, disabled sound, logged in, waited for the news on the right to load. It loaded, as did the character portraits. Moused over the "selected" character portrait (the top one, which would be used if I clicked "Enter Game"), EVE crashed.
So I trashed the preferences again, started up, accepted the EULA, disabled sound. Quit EVE. Launched EVE, waited for the news to load (after dismissing the intro movie yet again). Waited for news to load. Selected "Enter Game", can now log in with the troublesome character. Changed some settings (put all the services and accessories in submenu, collapse the left bar), quit the game. Launched EVE again, logged in, and can get back to my character to spin the ship around in station.
That's my morning gone, off to work.
Will submit a Bug Report this evening. [Aussie players: join channel ANZAC] |

9 crashes after patch today alone. The last one resulted in the Black Shroud of Death! My patience is at an end. I'll log on to keep my skill training going for awhile, but that's 4 accounts that won't be playing until this issue is resolved.
I certainly appreciate the fact that us Mac users are such a small percentage of the Eve population, and as such I try to be patient. But Eve is totally unplayable at the moment and that seems to be a bit much.
Please fix this issue as soon as possible. Thanks.

for those who are panicking and upgrading to snow leopard, that isn't going to solve the problem.
although eve isn't officially supported on tiger, this bug seems to knock out eve on all OSes

I think that there are two different problems with the client. One that is affecting everyone on Leopard and up and one that affects only Tiger users.
When using Tiger the game won't even launch. I think it has something to do with Cider, bit TransGaming told me that it is due to something on the EVE client (still discussing the issue with TransGaming, though) and CCP support won't discuss anything at all, since the game is not supported for Tiger and, thus, we're on our own.
From where I'm standing now I have very low expectations to ever playing EVE again on my white macbook. It ran "fine" till the update, but I guess I've overstayed my welcome with an old computer.
Anyhow, I'll hang out a bit longer, waiting for the fixed client for Macs to come up (eventually) and check if it works for me. If not, then it's been a fun time playing.

Edited by: Sly Noble on 03/12/2009 22:34:18 Well i've been having the same problems as everyone else. Get stuck in black screen when entering the game with my char. The preference folder/no sound solution seemed to work but there is no way I will run missions of PVP when the game is this unstable. I do credit CCP for addressing the problem and working out a temporary fix quickly.
** Also of Note **
CCP - When are you going to make the apple command button an option for mapping keys? Thought I read something about fixing mac keyboard function in the new patch but haven't seen it yet. FFS, and seriously so, mac users have been requesting this for several years now. The control and alt buttons are in terrible locations for mapping any more than like 3 shortcuts. If I am missing something glaringly obvious let me know. Thanks.

This is still not working :( I've reinstalled the full client, crashed again followed the steps and it worked for 20 minutes and then crashed again and now it wont even load dominion at all. I see the dominion baner come up when starting the game and then nothing happens just crashes again and I have to force quit to get out. CCP please gives us a update to fix this.

Just thought I'd post here as there is solidarity in numbers. Same problem as the above posters - splash then nothing...just the infinite silence of my Sacriledge cruiser wallpaper...
2009 Imac - posting at work so I don't have the specs...but it should run this no problem.

I do not know if it helps or not, but since I installed the patch for Dominion, I have no sound in the game, nothing. However I can play perfectly, seemingly without fail.

It's funny; I'd stayed off the forums for a bit- content with a few hours gameplay after FOUR reinstalls and FIVE cache erasures . Of course, no sound and lowest graphics (not that that's a problem, but just to cover bases)... and right as I was explaining this very thing in OS X ingame channel, and right as we were discussing doing everything that's been covered here and as I typed how I'm no longer getting the "splash crash" (where it gives the splash screen and then ends)- that's now where I am . So day three of three, after regrettably tweeting how the patch is greatness... I'm still in the same boat as all the others who've paid CCP for.... I forget at this point- I'm sure they're working to rectify the problem; but a status report would be nice- it wouldn't be too much to expect say, a note to everyone about "where the debugging process is" or "what's coming and when it will arrive". A lot of people have raised the notion that CCP will plex-appease our time, but as someone said before: "did anyone from CCP say that?". So, CCP, please say something

Just FYI I am getting all these errors. (24" imac, 4GB, >100GB avail disk)
I have deleted my cache perhaps 10 times and it will work for a while.
I only saw the "dozen dialog box" failure once. I lose connections or sockets. About half the time clearing the cache is not required. It is not uncommon for quit to no longer work and have to "FORCE QUIT" it.
It seems to be even more likely to die if some background process starts up ( e.g. Time Machine backups ) It is not uncommon for there to be a EVE menubar but no screen/window up. and quit from the menu does not work. I have even had a time when Escape quit worked but the menu entry does not.
Anything we can do to help get this debugged? |

well, i'm just one more mac user to complain about the same things everyone else is.
using mac osx 10.5.8 leopard.
have dumped the cache 6 times so far.
eve crashes are various times, while doing different things. so it seems to be a random cache corruption.
filed a bug report and was redirected to file a petition. don't know what that will do because i haven't lost a ship. after reading everyone else's comments, i'll keep my preferences intact and wait til a patch is available to correct the problem.

Truth be told, I have a ton of respect for what CCP has accomplished for a relatively small company. But I don't think they ever had the Mac side of things totally figured out. Even before Dominion, I had relatively frequent crashes, that happened mostly during combat. I learned quite some time ago that the game ran better when I played on the windows side. I was somewhat encouraged when the character screen loaded faster today. But I came back to earth when I too experienced a connection loss. And I'm using snow leopard. I think there are too few Mac users out there for CCP to really put a lot of time into making things run well for us. We are an afterthought. And I think there are many Mac users like me who only fire up in bootcamp to play Eve. I'm pulling for you CCP, but for now it looks like I'm gonna have to play on the windows side.

I hope this isn't true, I have only been playing 2.5 weeks. I gave up 3 WoW accounts and over 100K gold to come here and play with a friend because I was told they had the Mac platform stable. I never had as much as a hiccup the first few weeks, but now I can play for hours as long as I don't leave the dock, I am afraid to jump because I have about a 35% chance of not coming out of the jump in tact.
I do not have access to winblows and do not wish to sully my mac with anything from micro$haft, so I guess I go back to Blizzard.......

I left WoW because it was boring and a bit shallow (for me), while EVE offered me more freedom and depth. Also, my friends are playing EVE now, so I joined them again (played a couple of years ago on Windows).
The main difference that you may not know is that WoW has a native Mac client, while EVE uses a port through Cider. Many games do that, since they use DirectX and do not want to write everything from scratch for macs.
Apocrypha was indeed stable even on Tiger, but it seems they had a bit of a hiccup on Dominion. Maybe they should have waited for a more stable Mac client before going live with the expansion.
I'd wait for a few more days.

Edited by: Gunther Gabel on 04/12/2009 03:25:10 I am VERY aware of Cider and the challenges that CCP faces. Honestly, if they aren't thinking of a full Native mac client, i think they are messing up. Blizzard has many things over them on a UI base (Full screen windowed mode and Movie recording from open GL) Those are 2 dynamite examples of what a native port could do, but then again they would have to put out the money for a full Mac team. I assume they send the windows version to Cider and wait for them to cobble something together.
As far as direct X Uggh, once Open CL hits, i am hoping that microsoft wil lose some stronghold and games will go to Open CL, that will open alot more doors for macs.

I didn't know OpenCL could be applied to games. I thought it was more directed to math applications, as it is already being used nowadays.
The idea of having EVE on a native mac client would be a dream come true, but I'm not sure they want to hire OpenGL programmers and redo the whole game to run on OpenGL.
Supporting Tiger with a "low-end" client would be much simpler (I guess) and they don't do it either.

OpenGL has been around for a long time, and CCP would have made a decision long ago to use DirectX.
OpenCL is not a graphics programming language, it's a distributed computing language which will allow computing tasks to be offloaded to whatever processors are available.
OpenCL is definitely not a panacea that will magically prevent Cidered DirectX games crashing. [Aussie players: join channel ANZAC] |

Agreed. I don't expect to ever see an OpenGL client for EVE.

Open CL, I thought replaced Open GL, as well as adding the new stuff for math co processing. That is the way Blizzard made it sound when they switched to it.....
Either way, none of this matters unless CCP commits to it :(

It is possible that Activision Blizzard will use OpenCL for their cinematics rendering work and/or for running some servers. Not sure. The only person I know that works with this sort of thing is in the oil industry...

My contribution to the documentation of this bug. I hope this is of some help. Cheers! ~~~
Mac: Dominion client crashes after splash screen Build: Number Inaccessible; the first build of Dominion. Server: Tranquility Cider: 3225 Description: Dominion client crashes after splash screen appears. This started while flying a ship a few jumps in space. A freeze occurred followed by a disconnect message. The client always crashes thereafter. I have two instances of EVE Online on this computer, and the same problem occurs with both instances The 'workaround' listed in the Mac Forum is ineffective, as the problem simply recurs after 10-15 minutes. Computer: 2009 Macbook Pro; OS X 10.6.2; 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo; 4 GB memory. Bug report ID is 88577 |

Edited by: Taizo Shinseijo on 04/12/2009 06:53:29 Same deal here. Clearing prefs and cache works for a bit, but it still crashes, a lot. I also have to manually apply the patches - the client borks when it tries to update on it's own. For the record, Apocrypha worked flawlessly.
MacBook Pro 10.5.8 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
I get the "Connection to Server Lost" error while changing sessions (jumping or docking). I also got this one once:
Quote: {'reasonCode': None, 'reason': u'The connection to the server was closed.', 'exception': error(10038, 'Socket operation on non-socket', 'WSASend failed with error 10038: An error has occurred of type WSAENOTSOCK\r\n'), 'reasonArgs': {}}
Hope that helps you guys at CCP. I've only been playing the game for a month and a half. The game rocks, and the new expansion looks great. I hope this gets fixed in a timely manner - I'm not too stoked about paying money for something that I can't play.
