Just my thoughts. Many years ago, when I started, I focused on ships that had good drone bays, aiming most of my training time toward drones.
If properly babysat, Drones make excellent weapons, use no ammunition and free your ship to tank or providing a supportive role to your drones.
For this reason, favored cruisers are the Vexor and Thorax. For frigates, I agree, the Rifter is one incredible piece of work for a cheap ship.
I disagree with the consensus here that battlecruisers should be your primary target for a good missioning boat. Get a HAC. Like an Ishtar. HAC's tank really well and dish out nice amounts of pain. They cost a lot more than than a BC, but I think they're worth it.
BC's are a good direction as well, don't let me discourage that _too_ much. I trained BC 5 myself, and it's quite nice having 8 battlecruisers accessible to me that have maxxed bonuses.
If you looking for more racial lined cruiser suggestions, for Amarr, I like Arbritrator (nice drone bay, missles), Rupture for Minmatar is my choice (again drone bay, nice choice between guns or missiles), Bellicose is overlooked often, I used it a lot for early missioning. Caldari: no recommendations from me. for Gallente, Vexor all the way. break the mold and train for rails. sentries + rails are a nice snipe combo. Good in pvp and pve.

Learn to Dictate Combat and predict the pace of engagement.
Learn to Disengage and Run away when Combat turns against your favour.
Learn to Directional Scan and Assess Targets before even landing on them.
Mechanics of Frigate PvP Scale-up. Once you can fly a T1 Frigate well, Learn to Apply that knowledge into Larger Ships and Longer Fights.

Any decent frig, doesn't matter if it's T1, T2 , or faction.
Personally I love flying T2 frigs for small gangs, as they always serve a purpose. They can be Good DPS against other Frigs, they can hunt drones of drone carriers, or simply provide tackle that has a decent tank.
Above al,l I like the EAFs, all of them can truly boost the effectiveness of a small combat group. Kistunes FTW |

The Drake is a very, very good BC with an amazing tank and it can moonlight for you to make isk in hisec missions very well. The Harbinger is an excellent BC as well and does very well in small to medium gangs. The Myrmiddon is not a gang ship. It needs very good drone and active armour tanking skills to fly well.
All of this is subject to change this winter, however, as CCP has stated they're going to buff Gallente in some way, which could open up PvP to seeing many more Thoraxes, Brutixes and Deimoses. |

For manufacturers, traders, miners this is a must have, also useful for others. - Suicide gankers cant take your stuff. - Can haul your mining ships and other smaller industrial. - Can haul useful ships for PvE, command ships, salvaging ships, T3, loot. - Can support PvP'ers (even suicide gankers) in the field by spitting out ships for them, also allows them to refit. - Hull tanking ftw.
Biggest drawback is cant fit battleship. |

Rifters are the best T1 frigs out there. They are versatile and can be both armor and shield tanked and have a great slot layout. But it seems like everyone wants to go bigger fast. I only fly frigate sized ships so I went to a Wolf next for the armor tank and added DPS. For missions you can go to a Jaguar with an awesome passive shield tank and some more speed.
I also recommend the Firetail for missions. Level 1 and 2s are easy and fast with it. With minimal skills you can get that thing up to 1500 m/s with an afterburner. |

I have played at eve for some time and in my own estimation I have sucked badly at it because it's the only MMO I have ever played and I don't really get how they work... I usually play RTS FPS and you instantly out think out reflex your enemy and they go down... in MMO... erm still not sure.
However I still do have a tale of two to tell of victory and these support my opinion that destroyers are the ship of choice for new players and people who like to win.
From very early in my eve time I heard it said that destroyers were useless in pvp because they were large and weak. Even as I used my destroyer to annihilate any and all NPC enemies while salvaging quite quickly.
Again and again people say FRIGATES! RIFTER! and I say... destroyers are like the ultimate Frigate with evil dps and tracking they make mincemeat of frigates who stray too close. I very much enjoy the memory of humiliating my badass FC who had come from 0.0 to train an army in the ways of pvp and my noobish cormie handing him his ass as he shrieked over comms to HOLD FIRE! HOLD FIRE!(my stupidly expensive Rifter can't break range!!!)
While I have always found it really really difficult to tear myself away from industry and science I do have a couple of pvp victories that I treasure and they all happened in the Cormorant whose T2 variant has rockets
SO... to sum up. every player should get DESTROYERS and support skills as high as they can stomach the trains for.
Unless Hybrids have been nerfed since I've been gone I don't know what the problem is.... they occupy their intended spot in the weapon line up perfectly.

probably the best small ship out there.
Once you've trained it fully you will have good drone and gun skills and be rdy to move on to bigger and better ships.
Don't aim for titan or mom ships as once in them you wont be able to leave them safely.
(If ccp created a super station that super caps could dock in say 1 per region then I might get one myself but until then not worth the long skill training and effort if you cant get out of them safely and go blow someone up in your cruiser size ship) |

It all depends on what you wish to do in New Eden. If your looking to mine and run industry then you need Hulks, Orca and Frieghter for your race.
If its PvE ratting/missioning then you cant do worse than going for the Hurricane its a versatile ship that can if skilled right do level 4 missions solo.
PvP is a mixed bag. I prefer the Hurricane again due to its damage output speed and sheer tanking ability. But I also like the Rifter and its variants. I have a Jaguar that has busted through some big gate camps in 0.0 and it still lives to this day. Tough little ships.
My one piece of advice is to concentrate on one race first get good in their ships then look to cross train. And of course only fly what you can afford to loose. |

There is no definitive answer to this question.
I think the most important thing would be the direction the new player wants to take their game in, as in focusing on PvE or PvP.
Further, after playing EVE for 5-ish years now, what makes the best missioning boats and PvP ships now, is all probably going to change in a few months.
Besides that, I think EVE is starting to move in a direction where the community-within-a-community aspect of the game is becoming more important. The best advice about what ships to fly is going to come from the corp that the pilot is currently in, because that corp is likely to be dictated by the player focusing more in PvP or PvE, and there are likely to be certain tactics that the corp uses which require certain ships to execute.
Probably the best thing newer players can do is find a good corp to join. On the PvP side of things that can be very challenging for newer players because most of the top corps and alliances will have steep skillpoint requirements to even be seriously considered for membership. Even then, some people with certain personality types are probably not going to enjoy the more structured PvP warfare of the larger superpower alliances, and while there are still options for corps that run small gangs or finding a pirate corp, it seems like the landscape of EVE warfare continues to shift in favor of the numbers game, and more importantly the SUPERCAPITAL numbers game. While it might be difficult to get into many of the top corps, a lot of them have training corps or alliances that give newer players the opportunity to learn the finer points of flying spaceships while accumulating the skillpoints required to fly the ships the main alliance uses for it's fleet doctrines. Even training corps can be discouraging for new players though since many of them require players to stay for long periods of time (often 3-6 months or more), before advancing.
So if you wanted a firm answer today on this question, I would suggest new players getting into PvP get a second, maybe even third account and start down the long road to owning a supercapital of some sort. It doesn't really matter which one, or whether it's a supercarrier or titan (though a supercarrier is obviously a lot cheaper and easier to get into). Having a supercapital does two things: it assures you a position in a high-end corp and alliance, and second makes you competitive at the highest levels of PvP, given the state of where the game is RIGHT NOW. As awesome as huge supercap fights are, it is something I hope CCP is seriously looking at rebalancing, because we are rapidly approaching "SUPERCAPITALS ONLINE" status. Oh yea, and just having a supercapital is cool and all, but if you fly it like a moron just remember you deserved to lose it when it gets blown up. Is also a bit ridiculous to suggest a player train and accumulate isk for a year or two before they're useful? Absolutely. It's not that there aren't other ships to fly or roles to fill, but we are currently on the supercapitals online path RIGHT NOW, so if I had to advise someone what to train for, that would be it.

Those whom are going on about a Bhaalgorn or expensive. Cerberus were obviously never newbs. I rememebr it took me about three months too jump into my first battleship back in '08. I had no idea how to fly it. Thats the biggest thing, whatever you plan on flying, learn how it's flown, and ask yourself if thats how you want to fly. Like speed and guns? Minmatar. Like big ass missiles? Caldari. Like good looks? Amarr. Like in your face DPS? Gallente.
Second suggestion about ships is cruisers first. They provide decent firepower without being nutty expensive. If you want to improove upon the effectiveness vs power, Teir 1 battlecruisers (ferox, prophecy, brutix, cyclone) aren't always half bad. The teir 2's are even better if you want to fork up a bit more cash. For L4's, first best ship is a battleship, preferably a missile hurling one. After that you can upgrade to a T3/marauder. Last bit of advice: After flying a Tengu in missions for about seven months now, I have learned the lesson that the fastest ship at a certain task is not always the best. Fun/hour is a lot more important in a game than ISK/hour. |

It depends what the new pilot wants to do in EvE. Assuming he/she doesn't want to become an industrial pilot, there are two main paths:
For High-sec/low-sec: For high-sec missions, low-sec missions, or low-sec pvp, it's best to start with a Battlecruiser then go to Battleships. BCs do decent dps and have good tanks. Bships are great for missions and low-sec
For 0.0 (nullsec): Train Battlecruisers and then train racial interceptors. Battlecruisers will allow you to make money in nullsec. Interceptors will allow you to PVP. There is no fleet anywhere that doesn't require/accept interceptors. It may not be the most glorious, but you will learn tons about PVP and quickly become indispensible. |

Obviously there are a lot of options, but I'm going to stick to a progression of solid and cheap PvP ships that will get you where you want to be and can be used all over, followed by their high end/expensive counterparts:
Rifter - Probably the best T1 frigate in the game (unless you're Prometheus), get trained for it early and fly it, can be fit for ~2 mil if you ML3 fit it, only 3 mil of so if you T2 fit it.
Thrasher - This ship is also super cheap and pretty powerful. Will kill pretty much any frigate it can get its hands on. Very low skill requirements
Rupture - Probably the best T1 cruiser in the game (not counting the Blackbird which is insanely useful.) Also will set you up for...
Hurricane - The end all be all best BC in the game. 425AC Cane is THE ubiquitous fleet ship. Unless its like a whelp fleet then its some other hurricane fit.
Nanopest - It is to the hurricane what the hurricane is to the rupture. A bit slow for my tastes but its still a lot of fun, and cheap.
Maelstrom - Big daddy. Slow as molasses but can seriously brawl. Word of warning, you will not be able to leave a fight until all enemies are dead....or you are.
Note: Battleships should probably be held until later because it is unwise to fly them with T1 guns and training T2 guns for battleships takes a very long time.
After you have spent time flying these and feel comfortable fighting in them then you're ready for the T2/Faction stuff
Wolf/Jaguar - Rifter with teeth. Great AFs and tons of fun to fly, has that same feel of the rifter.
Sabre - Its a thrasher with extra mids that can bubble. What's not to like?
Vagabond/Cynabal - Kind of the penultimate solo pvp minmatar ship. Takes a lot of skill to fly correctly. Follows the Rupture.
Sleipneir - Similar to the hurricane but beefier and more dps, sits between cane and nanopest. Not my favorite and its expensive, but its pretty powerful.
Dramiel - Don't fly dramiels. That ship is for pedophiles. |

Really depends on what your planning on doing in game...
For PVE content even though its DPSmay be low, I like the Drake. The passive shield tank that it can be fitted with usually means that you can run either missions, exploration sites, Complexes, etc without much fear of losing your ship. When more DPS is needed I fly a Raven Navy Issue. Need to be a little more careful in this ship however as it does not tank as well as the Drake and if you're in LowSec or NullSec, you'll find that she will attract a lot more attention from those who you wish to avoid when in a PVE fit.
Solo PVP, even though I am far from an expert, i like the Rifter(or comparable Assault Ship hulls), Hurricane, Myrmadon, Rupture, Vexor. Although considering my combat log kills/losses ratio, you may be wise to listen to someone else in this regard

I've basically had to stop everything and go back to the start. I've completely changed path now and am training the support skills to properly fly a scimitar, will take roughly another month from today before my support skills are ready and i can commence training my logi skill up to 4-5 |

hmm..it highle depends on "the eve-flavour of the season"...
there were times where decent bs skills for tier2 amarr and gallente were the way to go; there was time where flying t2 hac was the only viable choice for pvp, there was a time where the raven was THE ship for mission runners, followed by nighthawk, agan followed by tengu..
atm drake and hurricane are ships of the hour...
better questions, and much easier to be answered what ships one would never fly and what ccp could do about it...

Have to agree with battlecrusier.. Harbinger if you are one of the chosen. up til then you really are pretty safe with any noobish frig. After the battlecrusier you have all kinds of choices to make about your role in eve.. Indy, pvp support, or combat.. then further defined goals after choosing a role.

oh so the answer is so not easy.
First it depends on what your doing. Mining, Trading, Wormholing etc.
I run missions in this alt. As such, I have a unnatural (and concerning) luuurve for Drakes. I luuurve spamming heavy missiles at NPC's.
Here's the reasons why: All you have to to do is target and and shoot. No need to worry about "transversal velocity" & tracking speed. I get to "distance tank" them for extra comfort. By far the easiest fit is a passive shield tank. no need to worry about managing active modules etc.

The Dominix is probably the most cost effective PvE boat there is, so if your main is young and you have no ISK, I found the best way to start out was grinding lvl4 missions in one of these babies. Save up your ISK/SP until you find out better ways of making ISK and having fun. |
