Hello,
Thank you for contacting customer support. We apologize for the late reply and appreciate your patience.
The socket error is the result of the TCP protocol closing the connection as it deems the connection unreliable. This usually is the result of the protocol having to resend the same packet several times in a row without success and unfortunately can happen very quickly for a variety of reasons, reaching from interference on a wireless network or a squeezed network cable to a router experiencing issues of some sort outside of the jurisdiction of ours or your ISP's circle of influence.
Any issues within our own hardware that could cause this would be caught quickly by our monitoring and affect any player whose connection goes over that part of our networking hardware at the time and thus affect a large player base at the same time. If everything on your ISP's end is fine as well, then I fear the root cause for those issues lies on other hops along the route. If you have access to a VPN service that allows you to connect via other servers in the world, it can help checking whether or not those connection losses still appear when going through this different route.
Other than that, there is unfortunately nothing else we can effectively offer as support in this regard. If speaking with your ISP or using a VPN resolves the issue, we can forward this to our Billing department for reimbursement of any time you were unable to use due to this issue.

Can people have a look at this thread and see if they meet the conditions in it? Try it out - could fix your issues.
Seriously? I'm on Cable modem, not DSL. Also, I ONLY experience a crappy connection to Eve when CCP routes their subnet through Verisign. Every time you do this I experience delays to Eve services (forums etc), authentication in the launcher, and socket closed in the Eve Client. However, as soon as CCP normalizes routing, all of those problems go away.
So please, stop redirecting the blame and stop rerouting through the crappy Verisign network and I'll be happy. |

My problem always seemed to occur around 4:00PM right when kids came home from school and internet usage in the area increased and then around 10:00 PM it went away I assume they went to bed and usage declined. What seems to have worked for me was to adjust my QOS (Quality of Service ) rules on my router. It came preconfigured with some rules that conflicted with EVE. The games that I know of that use the same port (26000) as Eve are Quake series, Enemy Territory, and Elite Force. The router had Quake preconfigured so I deleted those and made new ones for EVE and a MAC address rule for my PC. I don't know if this was the problem or if itGÇÖs just a coincidence but I haven't had a packet issue for 2 days now. |

I'd like to check in. Two and a half weeks ago I posted in this thread about socket closing issues. I decided to unplug my router and go straight from my cable modem to my computer, to see if it was any way router related. Since that time I have not had one (knock on wood) single socket close. I'll keep it going until the end of the month and plug my router back in starting in April, and I will see if the closings come back. |

Well if you have a cable box/router set up like me, just unplug the ethernet cable from your router and plug it directly in the back of your cable box. |

Been researching a possible solution for this and none found so far. The game is unplayable currently with socket closings happening about every 5 minutes. Has anyone come found a solution besides the ADSL, VPN or new router recommendations. I ran a tracert to the Eve Servers and here are my results:

To those having PERSISTENT socket issues, attempt a VPN tunnel connection. You need to re-route your packets via a different network. It doesn't come without costs however (from extra TCP overheads), but at least you can login and do stuffs. Temporary workaround until CCP gets their head from under the sand.
Plenty of options for VPN clients, but imo, stick to freeware open source unless you don't mind paying.
One suggestion, check - http://www.vpngate.net/en/ Read. It's almost painless to get it working.

I'm skeptical with the flush DNS and renew IP suggestion tbh. This socket closed issue seems to be pointing out to be a NAT traversal issue, or at least related to it, judging from some of the posts. Some folks that bridged their connection seemed to resolve their issues, but bridging has its own set of problems, foremost is the security isssue.
The packet lost/congestion theory is certainly a contributing factor, but I don't think it's the main root cause. A short test with a lossy route showed that the EVE client can handle packet losses .... up to a point.
The root issue, imo, I think something in CCP's client code isn't handling NAT traversal as elegantly as the ubiquitous BitTorrent clients (i.e. you can learn from them) Maybe CCP should look up this avenue if they aren't already aware of it. (that's assuming they're still reading this thread.)

Well I woke up this morning wanting to play Eve, tried to log in but the authentication through the launcher is not working for me. So, tried to log in through the Eve Client and it's extremely slow.
I checked my trace route and oh look, no surprise, CCP is routing us through the crappy Verisign network again.

Yeah, they re-routed through *vrsn.net (Verisign), presumably after that 15th Mar extended DT. Packet loss is even worse than what was (*.telia.net) previously. |

And yet again, CCP sidesteps any real troubleshooting and responsibility and hands ppl a debatable temp fix to this situation. The fact they locked that thread without explaining the how/why themselves as the 'experts' doesn't bode well for me to trust the 'i know what i'm doing' self proclaimed expert.
And no, i cannot just plug my modem straight into my PC as i have multiple (several PC's and gaming consoles) devices in my home.
CCP, man up and take responsibility. This is not caused by being alt-tabbed out or simply not interacting with the client. This happens more often when i am actively trying to use the client, and oddly, less often when i am AFK for hours at a time. |

At first it started with 1 toon staying logged in while the other DC'ed to often to count; this happened for a couple days. Then it progressed to having one toon be able to log on, but the other just DC'ing on a black screen after selecting a character. Now, going on over a week, I've not been able to log on either character.
I can open the launcher and it loads just fine. It says that tranquility is online and the server is running. I log in and the game loads up slowly to the character selection page. I select my character and get a loading icon. The screen goes black and I get a socket closed message after 2 mins of being on a blacks screen.
To add some more information, I lived in China (I'm not Chinese so no I won't play on Serenity servers) for 3 years now and this is the first time I've had this issue. I get the occasional DC to the stupidly slow internet speeds, but this is the first time I've not been able to actually log on. Also, the whole contact your ISP and get them to come out isn't plausible (you think customer service is bad back home....) considering the network requirements and language barrier.
Please help, I'm having EvE withdrawls.... |
