EVE Online as a game should should be very worried about SC. Nearly every gamer i play with is looking to this game as a new lease of life for the space simulator.
From what i have seen i can only hope it comes out with some of the polish the Dev campaign is being run with it will attract huge numbers of players.
The ability for people who have flocked towards EVE over the years to be able to play a game from its inception and not to be left dragging by 10 years is also a massive draw!
To say SC wont be an amazing game, is to be childish and unproffesional, because you just dont know and if it is will CCP wish that it had upped its game now when they had a chance!!!

Why can't people play both games?
What I find funny is how some (not all, I say some) people affect a tone of "CCP better change Eve to appeal to the masses or it's screwed".
It'll be a fun game I'm sure, but the tone above I find very childish. |

Still waiting on things from the 2010 fanfest to be implemented, its summer 2013.
Vision and delivery are galaxies apart my friend.
I still think soundwaves vision of the game is legendary.
An I'm still waiting to see it.
Quote:Also, how could people say SC doesn't compete with EVE? Are you from CCP? They probably don't think PS4, BF4, CODwhatever, competes with DUST. Their opinion is pretty much invalid at this point.
If you can call 5000 players competition anyway.

IMHO, SC is a real threat to X Rebirth, not to EvE.
I cannot care less. I'm currently playing EvE and the X series, and I will welcome SC if it finally launches with all the promised features.

To argue that it is Chris Roberts with $14 million dollars, making a game with the potential to be great is literally going on blind faith at this point. Allow me to be frank. You will not like me. You will not like me now, and you will not like men++ a good deal less as we go on. |

All I'm saying is, let's see some kind of software until we start making sweeping pronouncements. All we've seen so far is some people throwing money at a dude on the basis of a web page with a wishlist of features.
If anyone thinks that every single one of those features will be up and working in a Star Citizen game that anyone can play by 23:59 GMT on Dec 31st, 2015, then I'll offer to go double or nothing on their kickstarter investment; that is, if all the features are present, I'll pay them whatever they've kickstarted; if not, they can pay the same again to me.

If it was just some dude I would totally agree with you, but it isn't, its Chris Roberts and I would wager that nearly every person who plays Eve has played a Chris Roberts game in the past and has loved it :)

Everyone said SW: TOR has potential, given that it was made by the (former) kings of RPG, Bioware. That went well.
If Chris will try to make a variant of EVE, he will fail hard. If he'll try to make a space simulator similar to Freelancer, he might succeed - but he won't be endangering EVE with it, as the only thing the games will have in common is space ships. That's all there is to it really. |

Funny as that is what I am saying, it will not be in direct competition with Eve, however all those players who only live in HS doing Indy, Mission Running, Incursions and who do not actively engage in PvP, you know those players who are under constant attack from the null sec elite pvp'ers.. they are the people who will most likely look at SC and go.. hell yeah that is the game for me and that is the worry. |

Competition is good. We will have Eve, Star Citizen and Elite: Dangerous. There's room for all of them I think. Star Citizen will be limited in scope (at least in terms of world size). Elite Dangerous is most interesting to me because it will eventually include landing on planets and will have a novel multi-player aspect.

Perhaps I am missing something here, but what has Chris Roberts done since Freelancer that has you so damn excited? His game designer credentials is out of date by, oh, ten years and like Derek Smart, I don't think very many in the games industry would hire him and don't tell me it is his movie producing career..
The only reason why the gaming press even mentions him is because of the insane amount of money that people, without the slightest sign of hesitation, donated while frothing. Allow me to be frank. You will not like me. You will not like me now, and you will not like men++ a good deal less as we go on. |

If those players are only in EVE because they're waiting for EVE to turn into something it's not, then they'll leave sooner or later anyway, either to go play SC or some other game. How can CCP expect to keep people who don't like the basic game?

Yes, how can they? Why I am playing EVE if I absolutely hate some of its core design decissions?
It's easy: I've adapted, carved a niche, and there's nothing else to compare with.
The very first game I played online was not a MMO, rather a buy-to-play game with a PvP multiplayer addon which ran on private and often modded servers. It still does that, BTW, albeit the core game is 12 years old and the last update was in 2006.
The potential to re-sell the game to private server players who just need that-new-star-system is a pretty interesting side of SC. God knows that private servers are addictive, even if they're limited to 64 players (SC's will be larger though); the sense of community is strong when you always fly along and fight the same people.
SC is just a promise, for sure, wereas EVE is a reality, sure too. But there are no promises for EVE's future, nothing to look forward to. As much as I am not overly excited with my "investment" in SC, EVE feels like wasted money -namely 55 euros each 6 months. And I count on paying even less in the future. CCP Unifex: -á"lurking single players (...)-áare the majority of characters on Tranquility"
...And so now we know why CCP hasn't done anything for soloers since Apochrypha. |

I believe there is room in the sci-fi game market for both to exist. There are going to be aspects within both games that players will hate & love. It will be up to the player to decide which game satisfies their sci-fi entertainment desires the most and invest their time and money there. And if time, finances, and real life responsibilities permit, perhaps players can enjoy both concurrently; just log on to the game that appeals to your whim at the moment.
Chris Roberts has a great track record when it comes to making games, past products he delivered were highly entertaining and profitable(big Wing Commander and Freelancer fan myself). So, I can understand why people invest in his kickstarter fund. But, I will wait until it is closer to the release date for SC before I make any judgements on the game's merits. And as others have written previously, if CCP considers SC to be worthy competition, maybe it will galvanize them into finally producing bug squashing patches, Drone AI fixes, POS overhauls, etc and finally content that appeals to all the playstyles which EVE's sandbox can offer. |
