Backed Star Citizen and found out my Geforce GT 330M doesn't support DX11 so cant run CryEngine 3 lol Fortunately CoolGuy McNeish found out and shared a way to bypass the DX11 check at startup and run the CryEngine 3 using this DX10.1 Warp feature that seems to emulate the hardware required found only in newer DX11 chips. Will definitely have to get a new computer to play the final version. |

One of the reasons why i'm not bothered with SC's requirements is that by late 2014, likely my rig will need or will already have got a replacement...

I haven't had any issues with the hanger. My current build has a gtx 670 so no problems there, so far. Even if I was using a hi-end system I would still expect some issues when the arena module comes out since it will likely be a couple weeks before things get optimized and some early bug fixes come out. If all you have to do is throw a low-midrange vc in I would suggest doing that before doing an alpha with new shinny wares you don't want to wreck. |

Yeah I hear you, just like CoolGuy McNeish wrote there, this is a risky thing to do, may cause your card to overheat, pop bugs or crashes in the software, do it at your own risk. |

Competition leads to innovation
Star Citizen is the best thing to happen to EVE in a long time. CCP had better wake up because they will lose subs once SC launches GÇô itGÇÖs just a matter of how many - UNLESS they innovate.
RIght now, EVE ins Blockbuster Video, at it's prime. Star Citizen is Netflix. We all know what happened. Companies that dont innovate eventually get passed by companies that do.
I know that the core of the games are different and its like comparing apples to oranges, but they have a ton in common.
Both sci fi
Both space based
Both have markets
Both are MMORPGGÇÖs
The lack of a direct competitor to EVE is hurting development. GÇ£ExpansionsGÇ¥ are really glorified patches, Walking in Stations is crap and we still have essentially the same UI that weGÇÖve had for years, just with a few additions here and there.
ItGÇÖs no coincidence that CCP is working on EVE Valkyrie, a first person shooter space game.

A bit of competition for CCP would be good. Interesting article here that has given me a bit more respect for Roberts
http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/200998/chris_roberts_on_star_citizen_.php?page=2
"A lot of the time, you can spend time on a feature and then when you launch the game, and people aren't using that feature, and they're using another feature you hardly spent any time on," says Roberts. Not so with Star Citizen. "Getting them involved so early allows us, especially in a sandbox game, to always do a reality check."
The team launched a survey soon after the initial crowdfunding boost to find out what players wanted to do in-game. The results surprised Roberts. "We had all of these things, like bounty hunter, mercenary, pirate, merchant, explorer. And I was shocked that 67 percent of the people said that they wanted to be an explorer." |

New SC contest: design a starship from scrap to ingame build and earn 30,000 USD.
Details: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/contest/the-next-great-starship
Summary: CIG is going to pick 16 teams, 3 persons each, and will ask them to fulfill a series of tasks along the process that starts with a concept ship and ends with it being added to Star Citiizen. On top of the glory of having the ship added ingame and delivered to them for free, winners will get 30,000 USD and a juicy package of goodies:
$30,000 in cash for the team members. + Their Starship will be included in Star Citizen and each team member will receive the first production models + An Autodesk Entertainment Creation Suite + Maya Premium + A high-end AMD based system with Radeon R9 290X for each team member.
They haven't commented wether the winners will get too an outdated reskinned rare ship, though. The Greater Fool Bar is now open for business, 24/7. Come and have drinks and fun somewhere between RL and New Eden! |

Yes it is someone different spewing out another idea of what EvE will become but frankly it sounds the same as all the rest and there have been so many I could not even name them all so I will just state the last big one
The team that will be doing modular POSs have to finish Crime Watch first as it is the same team. They finish Crime Watch and low and behold no modular POSs as CCP changed its mind again.
The only certainty about CCP is that there is no certainty, as they will probably just change their mind again.
So I for one am looking forward to Star Citizen and even if it turned into vaporware, it still means Chris Roberts will have broken less promises than CCP. Any spelling and grammatical errors are because frankly, I don't care!! |

I second that opinion being that i have been a subscriber of Eve online since the game launched......There's been so many broken promises and delays that i simply don't believe anyone at CCP anymore, no matter who it is or where the anouncement is made. |

Being a long-standing fan of both Eve and Robert's games I don't really see how they directly compete. Sure they have similar overall features like economies, exploration, open worlds, persistent characters etc but the style of gameplay is very different, it's like comparing Quake to Counterstrike. We don't play Eve just because it has the features it does, we play Eve because of how they work together.
Another RSI game, Freelancer's MP was doing well for itself for a good many years but wasn't competing with eve for players in the slightest despite the similar broad features. Besides, you can't fly Eve's ships with a joystick, but I also doubt that SC will have the complexity of community that Eve has.
Valkyrie vs SC, on the other hand....
But like others have said, competition is not just a game of all-kill, it's also a motivational force. |

They compete as in "play EVE or f*** yourself" vs "play EVE or Star Citizen", where EVE is a kind of game nobody played before and SC is the kind of game almost everyone who plays EVE played before.
EVE has had the rare privilege of not having any serious competition for 10 years, but now everyone who ever played EVE because there were no online games like Elite - Privateer - Freelancer - X series, will have a chance to play what they used to play rather than keep coping with EVE's quirks.
Point in case, Star Ctiizen already haves 273,860 unique users, which likely are more users than EVE has had ever. 500,000 subscriptions do not equal to 500,000 users in a game where multiple accounts are the rule. And now mind it... Star Citizen is not even released yet. The Greater Fool Bar is now open for business, 24/7. Come and have drinks and fun somewhere between RL and New Eden! |

I looked at the Star Citizen forums a few days ago and it seems there is a pretty good hatred towards Eve players. That kind of put me off.
Also I do agree that Star Citizen does and will have a much larger user base then EVE will ever have. In my eyes Star Citizen is appealing to a larger audience then EVE. With shiny graphics, Twitch based, and less of a PVP focus being the big draws to the game. |

Damn the general eve player reputation all to hell.
I'm still on the fence about Star Citizen. I have not seen enough about the general gameplay to determine if I would like it or not. I tread lightly on pre-release stuff these days. |

As for "broken promisses", I'm more inclined to think that most of them didn't become reality because of development hell or they just aimed too high (which CCP is really good at) for the current tech level. I have yet to see CCP break a "promise" just "because".

While I sincerely hope Star Citizen will be a success, I'm not that interested in it myself. It's crowdfunding I want, not this particular game.
There's already some promising M-rated RPG's in develpment that would never happen through publishers who want lame, toned-down games that can be sold to children for extra profit.
Anyway, star citizen... it's not a single shard universe so it doesn't really compare with EVE. It could still be an excellent game, it's just not going to have the same depth as EVE simply because there isn't a hundred other people buzzing around every corner. |

Poll about content in Star Citizen resulted in 2/3 players voting for "exploration" as most attractive gameplay so SC devs focused on exploration + upcoming Elite is practically 100% pure unlimited exploration while in EVE exploration is the most frustrating and complicated mini-game one can imagine (I cannot tolerate scanning).
Same for avatar gameplay: besides sleeve tattoos and cyber arm as part of $150 package there is 0 new content for EVE while in SC I already got aquarium and buggy jumping track (and people didn't even ask for an aquarium).
3 months have passed since the beginning of this thread, some things changed: Star Citizen got alpha hangar module and 7 patches, CCP announced new expansion and now we have clear answer for the question "what exactly CCP is going to do to make EVE more competitive?": exactly nothing. CCP is going to give up all RPers / PvErs to Elite and SC without any struggle.

Probing in EVE is a mini-game and it is complicated? It used to be challenging back when it was first implemented, something that CCP has steadily chipped away at over the years and Odyssey that really put a nail in the coffin on whatever you can call complicated. So perhaps you are just impaired?
Sure, we got nothing related to playing with our toons and we don't have a aquarium. But we can undock in our shiny ships and play the actual game rather than run a "hangar module" to stand there and marvel at our purchases for real money, eagerly waiting...
EVE isn't competitive? Whaaaat? I have yet to hear either Mr. Braben or Mr. Roberts touch on the subject of PvE, while it is something that we can expect, and color me pessimistic but I think it is too soon to celebrate whatever PVE content in these games as milestones compared to what we have in EVE today.
Prepare to see Chris Roberts trying to raise even more money. Preferably in the billions. Allow me to be frank. You will not like me. You will not like me now, and you will not like men++ a good deal less as we go on. |
