And yet EVE's still here because the people who predict it's demise don't really understand the complex motivations 10s of thousands of people have to staying with or coming back to EVE online. Funny thing is it's some of it's biggest "I'm quitting" detractors who wind up propping up the game by not being able to leave it for good. EVE doesn't just draw people in, it' makes them it's prison ***** (you think you wanna go home after your sentence (sub) is up, but you keep finding a way to come back LOL).
Not quite, as i've been playing eve since the very start of the game in 2003( so it'll soon be 11 years, time flies), and do take long pauses away to try other games for weeks and even months, during wich time i only log in to check skills and maybe chat with people i know....Long story short, eve has been boring for the last few years and hasn't had any content for the really old vets to aim for, and no, PVP and overall fighting for the same pieces of space over and over again, with many players having joined so many different 0.0 aliances that i lose count, gets repetitive too.... And yet you're still here, exactly proving my point.
Well that's a point that can be open to discussion as in the early years, i was actively playing the game pratically every day of the week, with tons of objectives to hit and the same goes for skills needing to be trained up.....Now that i'm past the halfway mark on total skill points that are able to be trained up, with nearly 200 skills to lvl 5, all the isk i could want, the best possible implants owned and i'm able to fly every single ship in game as all combat ships are fully maxed( yes even all 4 titans), there simply isn't much left for the old farts of the game, and many people i played with back then have long since quit the game.
Since CCP focuses on new players almost exclusively for the last several years and their own database shows that the average player plays the game for 9 months and then quits, and considers the old players as an aquired asset that doesn't need any specifc attention since there here till the bitter end of the game no matter what happends, content for said audience, wich i admit is only a very small portion of the overall player base, has been non existant.
I hate being ignored but that's how the game is and so i only pop in every now and then, and mostly when there's new expansions released where i try out some of the new stuff for a couple of weeks, and then wait for the next expansion and until that point, i just chat with people i know, so the interest in the game is nowhere near what it used to be and has become a chat channel with graphics.

Im sure youll try... but as devs in SC stated
-"Chris is very against forcing people not to be able to PVP artificially and thinks we can balance the game in such a way that itGÇÖs not an issue. Beyond that which weGÇÖve already said, IGÇÖm not sure what else we could add to mollify folksGǪ itGÇÖs going to be one of those GÇ£trust us and weGÇÖll fix it if we screw upGÇ¥ things. - Ben Lesnic, Community Manager."
so ya, im sure you will do some things in the grey zones, people will get upset... and devs will fix it ! ;P ... SC is a PVE game firstly.

Oh I'm certain without raw PvP, certain individuals will find a way to make the lives of SC players painful. After all, initially in EVE Goonswarm was an organization that had rules. Hell, they even disallowed scamming and wanted to have a good reputation.
They became what you see today through being declared the cancer of New Eden. Anyone who shuns them when they come will be responsible for what will they do unto the world when they settle in.
The only way to stop the "griefing" is to disable player impact upon the world - and I'm not sure if CR is willing to do that. Is it Hotdrop O'Clock yet?

Well, here it is, the first ""crisis"".
On a "letter from the Chairman" issued today, Chris Roberts has announced the decission to delay the delivery of the dogfight module until it can be built on the backend networking of Star Citizen, rather than try to rush it using CryEngine's networking. This means a couple months at least.
The letter is long and detailed, and certainly the man is threading carefully.
But it is OK, these are no big news to anyone who's been following the development as the issue has been introduced previously and everyone should knew how this decission was on the making, and that it is the right way to go.
As a treat, the team will stream a demo flight with what's done of the module, on friday 20th.
BTW:
Quote:(...) I feel that the Dogfighting module, especially with Star CitizenGÇÖs greatly increased profile, needs to be more polished than a typical GÇ£alphaGÇ¥. There are a lot of eyes on the game, and more than a few people wanting us to fail. Because Dogfighting is the first module that will involve significant gameplay, it has to be good GÇô I donGÇÖt feel that we will get a pass just because it is pre-pre alpha. (...)

I don't think it's that simple. CR's seems to be all about immersion and emergence. I would take it for granted that if it's actually "griefing" it will be dealt with, but if we are talking piracy, politics and graft it will likely not be restricted beyond the game mechanics. |

CCP already bans griefing and player harassment. They like emergent gameplay, too - they love it, it's the crazy schemes of players that earn them publicity.
Many who already declare that they'll run from EVE to Star Citizen have trouble distinguishing between emergent gameplay and griefing. Suicide ganking for profit isn't griefing, neither are hisec wardecs, theft and many other ways to earn money at the cost of someone else. They will likely scream about it and he'll either have to face rage/disappointment or start nerfing the precious 'emergent gameplay' (have a look at EVE's forums from time to time, now multiply the whining by the amount of people who were ~promised~ greener, safer pastures.)
As for immersion - well, let's see if he can duplicate the whole "I was there" thing.
Also, I will laugh if CR - despite the delay - will shout "Donate donate more. We're delayed yes but give us more money!" - I won't really mention the lack of planning the entire situation shows, the fact SC had to have its own netcode was pretty obvious from the get go and it sounds more like an excuse as to why it's not ready. Is it Hotdrop O'Clock yet?

CR promised, CR announced a delay, a lot of people are saying "called it" and betting on even more delays - and not just in ~that one feature~ department.

The only way Star Citizen will have a real impact on the core player community of EvE is if SC PvP is just as brutal. If not... sure people will go play it... but they will always come back to the gritty, painful, agonizing destruction of EvE Online.

I think we're heading for quite the show with the dogfighting module release:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qRNYF12Us4
Pay close attention to the ship UI using holograms and the damage model being used where one can litterally tear the ship apart piece by piece with weapons, as well as the lighting work done on cockpits.....Makes EVE look dated in some respects to be quite honest... |

And, 35 million reached.
This goal has been achieved through contributions from existing pledgers but also with pledges from over 6,000 new pledgers.
The 35 million stretch goal was the unlocking of a specialyzed information runner ship:
Drake Herald GÇô Knowledge is power, and one of the most valuable commodities is pure information: the 1s and 0s behind everything from UEC ledgers to Citizenship ratings. Whether itGÇÖs colonists struggling to stay in contact with the UEEGÇÖs central worlds or criminals trading in illicit data, there will always be a need to securely move data. The Drake Herald, small, armored ship, is designed to fit that need and safely get that information from Point A to Point B. Featuring a powerful central engine (for high speed transit and generating the power needed for effective data encryption/containment), advanced encryption software and an armored computer core, the Herald is unique among personal spacecraft in that it is designed to be easily GÇÿcleanedGÇÖ when in danger of capture. The Herald includes an array of heavy duty internal options for data protection, including redundant power subsystems and EMP shielding, and a high-powered broadcast array for data transmission.
The goal for the 36tth million was voited by the community and willb ea star system showing a blach hole event horizon.
The goal for the 37th million stretch goal has been voted as a stelar graveyard:
Tanga System GÇô At the heart of an unusual rectangular planetary nebula (see reference), lies Tanga System. The inner planets engulfed the star entered the red giant phase. The expanded habitable zone unfroze a small world on the former outer ring and for several hundred million years made it habitable. Life began to emerge and was just reaching a primitive state when the star collapsed into a white dwarf, throwing the planet back into a deep freeze, then blasting the atmosphere away with the resulting planetary nebula. ThatGÇÖs how the system was found: Only two worlds (speculation that there could have been three to four more) but both are dead planets with no atmosphere.

Initially it was, but that was with it using the multiplayer code that's built into the cryengine 3 dev kit, as the initial alpha involved a lot less players being eligible, so that would have been good enough to handle the workload.
Given that the amount of alpha slots has doubled, and that servers will be set up in europe and asia, and not just in the USA as was the case with the original plan, the dev team has to develop their own network code to handle all that extra workload....Cryengine's built in network won't handle it basically, hence the delay. |

Does have a persistent universe where the actions of all players affect the game and it's economy, so that covers your first 2 points as it does quality as features of an MMO, but you are right it isn't done yet so we'll see what happens.
So far, the main distinction with EVE is that EVE runs on a single massive server and has no instancing, so anyone can find anyone else at a given moment and **** on their parade if they have the means to do it......Star citizen will be split across multiple servers and will have instancing for at least some of it's content..... |

For some of those reasons is that I am personally not that convinced, because SC seems to behave with today's laws of physics, engineering and flying models. For a futuristic sim, it doesn't seem to look too far ahead into the future, like EVE. If I want to fly a thing that resembled a plane in today's world, I'd stick to my DCS A-10. Maybe it's me, but the rookie ships, look really bland. They're all symmetrical, and even have wheels. EVE spaceship design is far ahead in that dept. Perhaps Valkyrie will bring some of the elements from SC, that EVE lacks. Like walking inside the ships and hangars. My theory is that Valkyrie could be the answer to SC. But somehow I doubt they can take on Chris Roberts with the absolute lack of knowledge in avatar gameplay that CCP has got. I for one, will play it. And since I've only got time in life for one game at a time, will unsub while trying SC. |
