Eve has about 80k subscribers right - so over 1 million in revenue every month. This is *WAY* enough to run a resilient service.
Somebody hasn't planned for the increase in traffic/users or they're having development issues. Neither of which is an excuse for binning 18k users at peak UK time. Lets think about traffic shaping/throttling - hello CCP what are you doing?
Given that CCP run bleeding edge servers chucking about mind boggling amounts of transactions every second for 23 hours of the day I think it's surprising they don't fall over more often.
For those who do work in IT related fields surely you must understand it's not merely a case of 'hire more staff' or 'buy more servers!'.

Edited by: DIABLOII on 13/12/2005 23:48:47 I think CCP are having several Problems with the load :)
EVE is simply to good .. but as you can see on evenews.com there were a couple of problems also yesterday around the same time , I have the feeling since 2 Month the system isgetting less stable every day and the people on the server are rising.
It is time to discuss if there shouldnt be a stop to new players or at least to trial account until the new 64Bit hardware ist installed. It would be very intrested how hi the load is just from the Trialaccount players ?
Kieron thanks for taking the time and informing us on that "large scale" outage, I dont think that you will get much sleep tonight :)

Just one last question: Why does somebody see the countdown and somebody just get the "unable to connect to..."-message? Germany here (Arcor) and just getting "unable to connect..." - no countdown.

usually they do these optimizations and changes during the downtime....and if they are changing something and want to update it, they tell everyone in-game that they are doing it before they shut it down...Perhaps they are resetting every node and then their going to turn it on....
P.S: I have no idea what im talking about lol

At a rough guess I reckon they are blocking some player/country IP's from connecting straight away to avoid any server problems as people flood back in.

Somehow I get the impression you work in IT, and may I suggest not more staff or servers, better staff and servers instead?

It's a conspiracy, to get teenagers to do their homework after school instead of playing Eve... crash the server right when they get home.

It's not an ISP issue on this end. And it's not a UK router problem on this end either.
