Same here. At the character selection the background is black, the single character windows are flickering and it looks as if parts of the background picture and the ship picture changing place with the character picture for splits of a second, creating this flickering effect. Docked in station, the flickering goes worse when moving the mouse cursor. Normal windows like settings window are stable. It seems that movements/activations on the background activates the flickering. For example the old login screen (when you start ExeFile.exe) is stable but only until you press Esc for the settings window: the background picture becomes blurred and the lower part of the Screen (where you put in username+password) starts flickering now.

The logon screen after entering password, character select screen, static station background image, and when undocked HUD and brackets are all flickery. It looks like it's flipping between the buffer it should be displaying and a zero buffer or something.

and I also have 319.32 like Cpt Pugwash with Mint. The packages name is nvidia-331-updates and its the "highest" one I can see at the package manager.

Update: using LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 seems to "fix" the issue.
That is, while there's no flickering with software rendering, it being software kinda exemplifies the rendering part. You can see every frame of it. Not really hard, having 1 fps and all. |

I saw that and groaned...99% sure that's what's caused this issue. Last time they fixed an API call to the gpu they broke Captains Quarters...not that it really mattered, but since then CQ wont work well in linux |

In fact, what i see is just the opposite. After this (04.02.2014) patch I have driver crash right before the character selection screen (after bulk data have been loaded and processed). I have an AMD card, Ubuntu 12.04 with standard wine. Yesterday EVE was working perfectly for me. Please revert the patch or fix it ! |

As a side note, the only thing not flickering is the overview and the chat windows. Also when opening the radial menu and hovering over one of the icons all icons change into this one from the radial menu. In "normal" broken state I've the contract icon as my speed indicator and the rest of the neocom icons as capacitor indicators. Most of the flickers. I also flew past a contract icon in space. |

+1 reporting in. Was fine yesterday evening on TQ, no change to my setup.
Currently flickering/missin login screen components, flickering neocom bar in station, capacitor & modules in space are all smashed around where the capacitor should be, looks like a major UI positioning bug. They're spinning & doing all sorts of weird **** when I move the mouse. The neocom icons seems to be juggling position, not just blinking flickering.

... Also you can change the shader, postprocessing and LoD settings within the larger device block without it failing too (as those do for me via ingame menu atm iirc). Fairly obvious variable names, change the end value only. Values 0-3 in most cases, simple mapping between ingame options and increased quality. For non-fullscreen I think you'd need to set PresentationInterval: 16 or 17, don't think it's meant to offer Iterval options other than Immediate or One for such screen settings. |

I too have the flickering issue. No changes have been made to any software on my system except for the EVE update.
The character selection screen is really messed up to the point I can not really see anything. I just click where my character should be and I can log in. Inside the client I can chat but that's about it. Icons flicker with other icons. Lines appear all over the screen, graphics are glitched and torn. I have not tested undocking yet as I don't feel like getting in a fight where I can't shoot back.
Graphics are at their lowest settings. I currently run the eve client full screen in a wine window.

I've just moved my assets to safety, (boy that was painful) and canceled my subscription. Select technical issue, and lack of linux support. I'd advise anyone with a reoccurring subscription to do the same until this problem is fixed so CCP understands this issue hurts their bottom line. Of course my account is active until march so I'll be trying on occasion to find a fix, but given the issue seems to effect all major chipsets, and drivers I doubt there will be a fix outside CCP.
PS- Eve devs. Would it kill you to at least have one Linux box some where, and test new patches and releases on it? At least you'd know when things like this were happening. Former forum cheerleader CCP, now just a hopeful small portion of the community. |

After the patch I logged in simply running the and I got to login but could not really see the characters I managed to select main and login but everything was sort of transparent and unresponsive.
Solution: * Clear EVE cache from Launcher settings * In wine trick I disabled virtual desktop * cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program FIles x86/CCP/EVE/bin * sudo optirun wine ./exefile.exe
Game now runs with no problems but only in full screen cant run it in windowed mode and cant turn shaders from High to Low. |

Just to make this thread a 'lil bit longer:
Confirmed.
But because CCP does not support linux we should brace ourselves to install some random Windows (and we all have something like that laying around - be honest). But meh. That's what I pay three Accs for? Not one guy smart enough to test this **** thoroughly before it deploys? How hard can it be to fire up a wine and just test a quite hard shift in the graphics engine like that? And since even Windows users are experiencing the same problem: They will not give a rat's arse. For solutions turn to WineHQ.
But keep on complaining - maybe we'll get a "supported client" - again. If they believe they'll lose to much subscriptions.

I also don't think they feel threatened when 0.1% of the player base cancels their subscriptions.

For people that don't know, apparently this also broke the OS X client. And there will not be "official Linux" client again, since no one used it last time. And no one used it last time, because it was just outdated wine (like on Mac). So unless you want CCP to somehow make OpenGL client, there will never be "official Linux" client again.
Anyway, this bug will get fixed Soon.

Just another Fedora user affected and guess doesn't make much sense to post another specification. I think this issue shows quite clearly why multi-platform projects are having clear benefits as an issue on one system might occur rarely or hidden on another. Windows users then wondering for random crashs. There are quite some linux users in this thread... another three acounts here and CCP is seriously not able to put at least a single guy out there having a wine running with at least the latest specifications and giving it before release a shoot? I can understand if there are issue that occur somewhere hidden, but in the login screen and all over disco lights after that shall be quite easy to catch. If we are not getting a native client, then please give us at least some most basic support... |

You cannot expect them to test every patch in Wine. You can't even expect to even be able to run the game in Wine.
The fact that devs actually made a Linux forum and are watching it tells a lot about CCP. Not a lot of devs do this.

I have yet to see a single post by CCP, acknowledging the issue at hand. So at this point you can't really say they're monitoring this forum. There haven't been a great many posts by CCP on here anyways. And why is it that they can't have a single machine running Wine just to test if the new build works at all? Why is that so impossible? It's true that Linux users aren't a vast majority but we're paying customers and we expect to fly internet spaceships just like everyone else. |

Be Patient ! Indeed.
In fact, CCP doesn't support GNU/Linux, but, they accept their money, the money of the gamers who prefer GNU/Linux and don't want to pay for an archaic operating system. I play Eve on a GNU/Linux Machine, and I just have those Operating System. CCP do some tests before introducing a patch. And they don't care about GNU/Linux users, but, they accept the price we put in the game. Furthermore, this bug impact some Windows & Mac users.
Yes, it's a game, but it's a lot of money by the world. So CCP don't have to play with our money.
If I pay 2 days late, I have 2 days without access to the Eve World. But, if they inject a patch that is not functionning, and make my game unreachable, YOU say : "be patient"... No, no, no. If they make my game unreachable, they must compensate for the days I can't connect, or play correctly (I say play correctly, but here, I can't play anymore).
Please, Psychedemic, pay attention about the word you use. Yes, I will wait for a patch, and I hope they will fix the issue rapidely. But I don't want to be patient, I pay, I would receive what I pay for.
If you say : "OMG, it's just for GNU/Linux users", I would remind you that Mac and some Windows users have the same problem.
I can accept that a mistake is made, not that one mocks me, by the fact "just be patient".
Best regards

If CCP wasn't doing things to help Wine users, you would most likely not be able to play the game at all.
My point is, your argument Quote:we're paying customers and we expect to fly internet spaceships just like everyone else. is invalid, as it's not officially supported. You're paying for software made for Windows and OS X. |

The point is still invalid. I know, I know, I get your point here too. But still, your current monthly payments do not include official support for linux, so do not expect CCP to change their code in anyway just so it would work with wine. They will fix the issue that is causing windows-clients to not work properly, by testing it on windows only. |

I don't said that, it's another person. Please, do the right things, and put the right things in the right place. So, I said that it's not just a GNU/Linux problem, it's a windows & mac users problem too.
So, I know, that they are not officialy support GNU/Linux Operating System, but, they made a Linux forum for... Oh, yes, for the windows & macs users, sorry, I am so stupid.
So, if they doesn't fix those problem, some will leave... and they (CCP) will lose some precious money.
Yes, I pay for a game for windows & OS X (Operating System Ten/unknow (at your convenience)), and OFFICIALY CCP doesn't support GNU/Linux system. But, they know that some are playing on that system.
I do not want to have a fixing problem right now, so, I know that those problem is for some windows & mac users.
If I don't want to play, I will go to another game, that's right. If they doesn't officialy support GNU/Linux users, I am supporting what I do. But, in fact, they don't want to have a "linux" place forum. And they have one...

You call CCP crazy for a problem with EVE on a operating system they do not officially support? I'm not happy with the problems, but I know, that they can occure and that this is my problem. I pay my subscription fee for a working windows (and mac) client. A working linux client is not part of the contract with CCP and you can't complain about problems with EVE on linux.
We should be happy that EVE runs with wine and I'm confident, that CCP will fix this problem - sooner or later. eXeler0n ============================ Quafe:-á http://quafe.de Blogpack:-á http://eveblogs.de |

Indeed. Some are looking for solution. But, the reason of this thread is not to find a solution, but to show to CCP that we need a solution. All GNU/Linux users are not programmers, engineer, what else, but just end-users. If you have a solution, please, gives it !

I have taken the following steps trying to resolve the problem:
Full Power-Cycle Clear all Cache Files Running the repair.exe Tool Removing the CCP folder under Local Settings Upgrading to the latest Nvidia Driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-331.38 32-Bit) Removing the CCP folder under Local Settings (again).
But nothing of the above has fixed the problem.

Since the game is forced into DirectX 9, I assume the D3D dll is from DX9. I'm not sure if you can override it to native, but I have a Windows XP VM that I can pull it from to test if needed.
Also, a get spammed with "fixme:d3d:resource_check_usage Unhandled usage flags 0x8."
To me, it's looking like a wine issue. Can someone with an older version of wine and on different distros test this? Maybe we need to talk to WineHQ about it. |

wine 1.7.11, catalyst 13.11 beta6
following things did not help:
- turning off desktop compositing - clearing cache and settings - running Eve in fullscreen mode - running Eve in an emulated desktop - removing dll overrides - changing emulated windows version - new wine prefix - setting the DirectDraw renderer to "gdi" - setting AlwaysOffscreen to "disabled" - setting OffscreenRenderingMode to "backbuffer"
I did however notice that Eve apparently doesn't need any Windows-native dlls to run, so that's good.
Axel en Thielles wrote:To me, it's looking like a wine issue. Can someone with an older version of wine and on different distros test this? Maybe we need to talk to WineHQ about it.
Older wine versions as far back as 1.4.something don't work either. |

It's more than likely that this issue will get fixed soon. It's not just Linux and Mac OS, many Windows users are still having troule as well, some of them are even reporting issues quite similar to our flickering. Eve is borked somehow, wine is probably just amplifying the problem. |

I have the sensation that this could be a good initial point for chasing the problem. Any idea on wich d3d dll operate eventually in wine configuration to workaround the glitching? Since the game is forced into DirectX 9, I assume the D3D dll is from DX9. I'm not sure if you can override it to native, but I have a Windows XP VM that I can pull it from to test if needed. Also, a get spammed with "fixme:d3d:resource_check_usage Unhandled usage flags 0x8." To me, it's looking like a wine issue. Can someone with an older version of wine and on different distros test this? Maybe we need to talk to WineHQ about it.
I've had that problem for a long time, didn't affect the Gameplay though.
Been trying several Wine releases (Stable and Development), and searched high and low to fix the error, but no luck.
But again, I don't believe it has any relevance to the problem caused by the 1.1.4 patch.

Like so many posters in this thread before i am affected by this aswell. The graphical glitches resemble what has been posted before.
- starting to mouse-over the character selection, the screen turns into something like wheel of fortune while its pitch black
- loading into the station environment works ok, things go south the moment i mouse-over the icon-bar and/or blinking chat tabs
- undocking, the flicker affects the UI parts that make the cap-pool, throttle and all the assortement of icons usually located alongside it. the eve-menu icon-bar keeps flickering (as before)
- the other parts of the UI (drone menu, overview, selected items) are not affected by the flicker at all
- ship models, celestials, station/gate guns are also free of any flicker
- console output while running the game has two (repeating) entries that i never saw until the patch hit on tuesday:
- fixme:imm:NotifyIME NI_CLOSECANDIDATE
- fixme:d3d_texture:wined3d_texture_generate_mipmaps texture 0x126f6a18 stub!
- those are not coinciding
Running Eve from Ubuntu Saucy.
Ubuntu 3.8.0-21.32-generic 3.8.8

wine version 1.7.11
The fact that this glitch seems to affect people on multiple OS's makes me feel that this issue will get resolved in the not so distant future. In addition to the attention from CCP Snorlax and what he hinted at (iirc he has a reputation for "saving" the not officially supported customers before) |

CCP was an early supporter of Linux gamers, even if only through a contract with Cedega. Props to CCP for that. Of course a few years back they dropped Cedega (and with that, offical support), but that is mostly because Cedega was falling on its face as the original wine flourished
Why stay partners with Cedega, when wine was already doing a better job? And without a direct contract, it would be foolish to advertise support for Linux.
An overhaul from DirectX to OpenGL sounds like it would take quite a few resources, and probably retraining employees to learn OpenGL. So a native Linux client seems a bit unreasonable to focus on at the moment.
While a 300 post Linux thread, which likely translates to more than 300 subscriptions, is simply amazing, it is still not a significant part of the user base to focus a large amount of resources on. However, I think it would be a good idea for CCP to keep Linux in mind, considering the massive explosion in the Linux games market (Thank you Valve). |

Nnnah. Say what you will, but eve doesn't have much problems to sort oun on linux. Actually one of the reasons I'm playing on linux is I had no time to sort out mic problems on my laptop under windows. I used to run EVE on windows for critical stuff that required high performance and stability (like CTA bombing runs), but one of those days my mic just refused to work on windows, and I had to do it a linux way. It didn't break under pressure unlike I feared, so I just switched over completely.
And the reason people don't post much here is simply because... Well, honestly, this forum sucks. Bugged notifications, stubborn text editor (I almost forgot the last time I had to save a composed post before actually posting not to lose it for some or another reason. Until I met this forum. I think it was back when IE6 was the cool new browser. Errr, the last time I had to save my posts, not the first time I've met this forum). Overly zealous mods in certain sections. No custom avatars. Yadda yadda. Well, you can usually tell a forum is a zombie when there's no MLP threadnaught on the first page of the offtopic section. |

Agreed. I tried to play many (windows) games with wine and eve is one of or even the least problematic of all of them. I'll take that as a sign of a well made program. |

Yep, fixed. Add me to the folks impressed by the size of the thread, and I can remember way back with the Trinity release which actually completely broke things, and took a week or so to resolve - mind you that problem ended up being a deficiency with Wine` s DX9 implementation . Any chance we can get an explanation for the cause of the bug? Just curious. Thanks again for the rapid dev response, I was fairly confident this would get resolved relatively quickly, and my faith was rewarded. |

- The mouse scroll-wheel works in the opposite way you expect (forward / push is zoom out, back / pull is zoom in)
- There is no option to invert mouse up and down?
These are game-breakers for me, so much for getting the flickering fixed.
I can't seem to find any options to change these to my preference. |

Depending on your distro you may be able to enable "Reverse Scroll direction" in your mouse options. You'll obviously have to enable/disable this every time you start and stop the game, though it may be possible writing a script that does it for you.
That said, I think you'll quickly get used to it if you give it a chance! |

If I reverse the wheel globally, then scrollable lists are reversed as well, not just 3D zoom.
Also, you did not tell me how to invert "looking" up and down, seems you can't do that either.
Anyway, peace.
I can't play a game with such fundamental flaws that have been around since, what, 2009?

I had the same issue, like the other fellow said, clear your cache.
I was being clever before and deleting the cache folder, that didn't work. Actually using game menu -> reset settings tab was the only way to fix it. |

Taking the opportunity to add yet another (enormously) huge "Thank you" to this thread.
CCP Snorlax (and the rest of the powers that be) yet again to the rescue.
Also Big Up's to all the *nix folks (and the odd Mac and Windows ones aswell) that weighted in on this and kept holding their horses until this got resolved. |

Btw is anyone else noticing a memory leak in the client? I have all on high and starting up ExeFile.exe uses 700ish memory but its slowly growing and growing for me. 1.4GiB usage after an hour or two. Yesterday my clients were using 2GiB.
Anyone else got this issue? I haven't noticed this before the patch but i could be wrong. It seems that the HEAP is growing constantly for me. Features & Ideas Tag shortcuts - Make an FC enjoy his position more! Overview - Show fleet members only! |

That the client uses 2 GB is normal. I read about it in the patch notes, it was written that the limit is set to 2 GB per copy. If Eve uses more - then there is a leak. But still can not use more than 4 GB - Eva is 32 bit program. -ƒ-Ç-¦-¦-¦-+-¦ -+-¦-+-î-+-Å -+-ü-¦-+-Ç-¦-+-é-î, -â-¦-¦-¦-¦-¦-+-ï-¦ -¦-¦-¦-+-¦-¦-é! -ó-+-é -ü-¦-+-ï-¦ -£-Ä-+-à-¦-¦-â-+-¦-+ |

The client mostly used about 900-1GiB memory, now it grows and grows. Yesterday it was at 2.4GiB usage. Just sitting in Jita at station and checking prices on items is enought for the memory to grow and grow and grow......
Also after this patch, smoke trails on missiles are missing and some people are saying that its behaving differently. Features & Ideas Tag shortcuts - Make an FC enjoy his position more! Overview - Show fleet members only! |

That's not entirely true with multi-threading, and PAE you could use a lot more than 4G. That said I doubt Eve is designed to use more than a couple of G. Generally I try and have at least 2.5-3G per Eve Client or I find I can't run a broswer and teamspeak/mumble, and play tunes... System kernel with support multiprocessor(multicore) and PAE and the program with multi-threading and 32bit is a little different. The system kernel can allocate memory at the request of the program, but no more than 4 Gb if it is (program) of 32 bit. And no matter system kernel is 32 bit , PAE or 64bit with 32 bit support. My system kernel is 64bit with 32 bit support and installed 16 gb ram. And use memory 5-6 gb with 2 Eve client and ~2.5 gb without. -ƒ-Ç-¦-¦-¦-+-¦ -+-¦-+-î-+-Å -+-ü-¦-+-Ç-¦-+-é-î, -â-¦-¦-¦-¦-¦-+-ï-¦ -¦-¦-¦-+-¦-¦-é! -ó-+-é -ü-¦-+-ï-¦ -£-Ä-+-à-¦-¦-â-+-¦-+ |
