Some time off to spend with your family (or start at making one :D) or Gametime extended for unexpected downtimes and forcing CCP to make people PAY for content updates instead of being FREE like they have been since release?
You know it makes sense. Just give those devs a little love and milkshake and go play your PSP or summat :D ______________________________________

To people who wonder why CCP can't test everything:-
Consider just the login scenario: 1) User has to select server - 1 code path 2) Server status check -> good -> bad -> unknown -> startup - 4 code paths 3) Enter password -> good -> bad - 2 code paths 4) Type of account -> subscriber -> trial - 2 code paths
That is 10 code paths to test in just one simple operation - select server and log in. I've simplified the process somewhat as well. Given my day job is an intergation and test engineer for comm's systems I can understand why CCP haven't caught all the issues before deploying the patch. However what it does not excuse is inadequate feedback and lack of a realistic timescale for patch deployment, regression testing and then starting to allow the great unwashed back in.

It's all a conspiracy, the server is denying you logging in because the devs are mining for a titan in Jita. They'll let you in when it's done.
Really, it's not the end of the world. EVE is fun, and good and a marvelous game, but there was The Time Before EVE when you did other stuff, like spam forums, troll tha' intarweb, watch films or TV, or just go to the pub and have a few beers.
Personally, I'm quite pleased. I got a good long session in the swimming pool (3225m, which is a personal best).
I feel somewhat sorry for the dev team. A major overrun on an upgrade is a nuisance. For all those moaning about testing and QA, please save it. When your production environment isn't an identical copy of your test environment, with _exactly_ the same conditions, it's just not possible to test exhaustively. You do as much as you possibly can, but then you just have to start going, hope it works, and plan to rollback if it doesn't work.
Which is exactly what CCP are doing. Best of luck guys, and enjoy the well deserved pint when it's done (one way or 'tother)

Originally by: Nosferatoo Martok I'm finding this extensive downtime totally unacceptable. Haven't CCP ever heard of testing?!?!
Unsatisfied customer+1.
Maybe if you'd bothered to read the dev blog about this upcoming patch you'd know that a) this patch WAS tested in no less than 4 stages on the Chinese cluster and b) the fact that Tranquility has a database of items spanning over 3 years makes the patching here a LOT more complicated than patching on the Chinese cluster.
How exactly would you like CCP to test this patch against TQ's database with TQ's user base (~20,000 people online at once) without deploying it to TQ?
CCP have heard of testing, and you obviously have no clue about testing.

If u people have really nothing to do (like me :) you might aswell read up on your eve-knowledge: EVE Backstory
Some chronicles are really a good read:
How many of you know how the dread guristas came to be ?
As for 'Patch Day Syndrome' as Kieron well states is something most veterans are very familiair with. It's just a well-known fact that TQ is incredibly complex. If the Dragon patch is already 1 million lines of code, can u imagine how long the TQ code is ? I'm betting if u printed it, you could cover London in paper.
The ONLY comment which is viable is that this happens pretty much every patch. delays, more delays and so on. But tbh, CCP has always come through. so keep ya pants on people. It will come back, it will be better. it always has
We know ur doing ur best CCP

I m playing MMO online since 10 years now. UO, Everquest, WOW, Everquest 2 : I could tell ya this ... Eve is one of the best developper service i have seen since 10 years.
Running a server with 28 K player, (grats, hope we break the 10 K ) , doing patch and upgrading game with new item, new toys, new skills without paying any money (try wow or Everquest, any new content cost you 30 E ... and ya still pay month fee !).
The Dev are working to improve that game and making it more fun for our pleasure. Knowing that : Let them do their job , they do want see ya play on the server more than ya want ! (hey, they are payed for , no more player, no money, no ! ) If ya checked test server (how many logged there) you ll have an idea of the new game !
Thanks Dev , you are working more harder than you should for some bunch of whinning people who have no clue what s going on, while you should be back to your home with your family ...
Think about it : while they are working on the server, they cannot enjoy their evening with their family watching a DVD or having sex ! YOU CAN ! well, if you have a wife !
Being say : i love that game !
O/ Safe fly all (once server back on !)

I suggest a "tech beer fund" having worked in large scale it support myself I know it's no fun working long hours esp with peeps *****
/me glares @ people neglecting to read EULA.
Though maybe a 24 owntime period would be better then ther's no rushing, you may need to credit people one day (rather than having the ball ache of changing the payment dates across all the customer record by one day - (Unless you have an intern or student, make them do it! "so you wanted a career in it did you!!!!! YOU WILL LEARN!!!!") )

Well in 12 minutes I guess we'll all find out whats happend.
To be honest, on a 1m lines of code project which probably has a high mccabe complexity score, which needs 'real world' testing for loading conditions etc a 5.5 hour overrun is nothing to moan about.

Major Kudos to CCP. They post estimated uptimes and keep us informed of what is going on. Previous MMORPGs I've played never had the respect for their customers to do the same.
As with all computer issues, you may think you're on the right track, only to find that you missed the mark. It's the nature of the beast. I have full confidence that CCP will get the servers back up as soon as they can.
One of my favorite things about eve-o is the maturity level of the player base. With a sophicsticated game comes mostly sophisticated players. It's great to see other users defending CCP, as they deserve it. Anyone who thinks they're doing anything less than a great job during upgrade time has not played any other MMORPG or worked a day in their life.
Thanks again CCP for an awesome game. I look forward to playing it again as soon as the phantom bug is squashed! Gardoon Kahn |

Sorry Jihaddi, but you need to re-read the EULA. <snip>
point taken, but why bring the eula into it? i'm certainly NOT claiming that the eula mandates the compensation: otherwise i'd just ask for my time back rather than posting here. it irritates me too when i see people asking for things they don't deserve.
what i'm saying is that ccp _should_ payback lost time (not cash), not that they _do_ (see eula). it makes for a better world for all. just an opinion 's all, not a statement of fact
btw i take it you're reading the eula simply cos you're waiting for tq? you might want to get out more if not.

For those that are saying this extended deployment time is the result of incomplete testing, the server issue we are trying to resolve is only occurring on Tranquility. We cannot duplicate it on the internal test servers, or Singularity, the external test server.
I would like to make this clear to a number of players. Due to the differences between Tranquility, Singularity and Chaos, not all the code migrates between the three flawlessly.
A poor analogy, but an analogy, nonetheless. Say you have a motor (code) you know works in your car (Chaos, internal test server). Move it over to a buddy's car (Singularity, external test server) and it works there, too. Put it in a different friend's truck (Tranquility) with a fuel system (server start-up code) that's supposed to be compatible, but it's just not working. The fuel system floods the motor and kills it before the motor starts.
I hope this gives some insight into what the team is trying to resolve.

You want them to go through the hassle of editing everyone's payment date for what? Is it really going to make you feel better to pay the subscription cost 12 hours later than you were before? Is it going to make you feel better to be refunded 30 cents?
2 days from now you won't even care about this extended downtime anymore, it'll be a fading memory (unless the servers are still unstable....). I really, really don't understand why there's always a few people demanding a 30 cent refund every time a free update doesn't go exactly as planned.

If I may recommend to help reduce load on the server on this new patch development, to give it a 72-hour torrent file. That way the massive leeching will also alleviate the congestion by spreading it across the downloaders. And after 72 hours the rush should be over for the new patch, hopefully. Just a thought and looking forward to playing again.

Quite true.. and yes it is slightly annoying not being able to play, but only because this is what I consider THE best game i've ever played.
But, CCP are doing their best in a situation they pre-warned us would be volatile, due to the nature of tranquility, and the testing that COULDN'T be done prior to deployment. If they do credit people I sure hope they offer us the option of not taking them up on it, as I think a LARGE portion of the playerbase would refuse, me included.
