We are proceeding with our investigations into the four allegations brought to our attention - alleged misconduct on the part of two developers in separate incidents, removal of a volunteer from the program and bias within the event team concerning an event arc, the last an incident which has already been investigated in the past.
While we are not able to address all four incidents in this announcement, I would like to take the opportunity to report the results of one investigation, CCP Sharkbait joining a player corporation.
In the past, CCP Sharkbait has joined player corporations when CCP has been petitioned with issues and specific case bug reports. In these rare instances, he has joined the corporation, verified information not available through the server interface and removed himself from the corporation. His departure from the corporation leaves an eve-mail in the CEO's inbox, thus showing his presence in the corporation for a short time.
This instance was brought about as the result of a player-submitted petition. Sharkbait joined the corporation to investigate and resolve an issue reported by a member of the corporation in question. While the method may be viewed as unorthodox, the information gained is vital to the continued QA effort and enjoyment of EVE by the corporation in question. Our investigation shows Sharkbait was not involved in any malicious or nefarious actions requiring administrative action.
We will continue to post updates on the status of the other investigation when information is available. We will also announce our findings when they have been completed.
CCP Arkanon
UPDATE: For further clarification, the petition (Petition #631627) which prompted CCP Sharkbait to join the corporation was created on the 6th of May. Note that our policies prohibit us from releasing details of the petition, as well as who filed it. After GMs were unable to fix the issue, an email was sent out asking for developer help. CCP Sharkbait reported the matter as resolved the same day, on the 9th of May.

Edited by: Evelgrivion on 27/05/2007 21:03:23 I figured the allegations against Sharkbait would amount to nothing. He's got no real motive to do anything malicious, and even if he did... He's a database administrator If for some reason he wanted to change something, all he has to do is modify a few table entries, which is what made this piece of allegation so silly to me in the first place

A reasonable and nicely-worded response. Thanks, Arkanon.
Of course, this was the least of the concerns -- nice to have it cleared up, though! I'm sure we all look forward to hearing the results of the other investigations.

Edited by: Takahashi Arran on 27/05/2007 21:20:20 CCP Arkanon you have investigated the issue thoughogly and well. However i fear you have missed the main IA point. I doubt anyone (cept maybe a few goons) had enough tinfoil on them to seriously suspect ccp sharkbait of wrongdoing. however the IA issue which was really raised and which ****ed off GS was why the petition that was filed (assuming goons weren't making that up) was deleted without response? Some clarification here would be nice .

I don't envy your jobs at all right now, having to listen to the kind of b.s. people post in these forums. It's nearly impossible to sift through all the garbage to have any sort of intelligent debate about it with players.
Of the issues brought up, the one involving Sharkbait seemed most obviously trivial. The goons' overreaction was absurd, especially now that we know they petitioned it in the first place. However, if their claim that their petitions were deleted without response is true, then that needs to be addressed because that is a good reason to get upset.
The issues about MSNing devs, and more BoB nonsense, is far more interesting. I'm no tinfoil hatter, but if that stuff is true it's starting to really add up.

Could well be..
CCP really need to work out how to talk/inform customers tho, I raised a petition regarding some BPO's not locking down and got back a standard there isn't anything wrong reply despite sitting there watching them a GM fix the things.

By not telling DS1 or the public who filed the petition you have solved nothing. As far as the members of DS1 are concerned no petition was filed and by not releasing a name you only confirm that which invalidates your entire post.

How would releasing the name change anything?
If you're claiming CCP is lying now, what would stop them from lying about the name?

Because then there is a real non ccp person that could vouch for what happened. If they just pick some random DS1 member and say he filed it that DS1 member can say whether or not that is true.

Couldn't the player just deny having made the petition?
Then CCP would say "here the logs prove it!"
And then the tinfoil hatters would claim CCP fabricated the logs.
And so forth and so on.
The person who made the petition could come out right now and tell us if he wanted to. CCP naming him publicly won't change that.

While this issue may seem to be 'the most trivial' as one player stated, it was the first issue brought forward by the accusing player alliance and seemingly the root of their discontent.
We are still continuing with our efforts. Please keep in mind this is an extended weekend and not all the staff are in the office to assist where needed.

Your right the person could come out and say they did it. But according to DS1 no member made such a petition so there in lies the issue.
Also the response to the deleted petition a separate issue or is just being buried with this one?

How would a corp know whether a member made a petition or not? Such a statement by DS1 is dishonest at best. Originally by: Fofalus Also the response to the deleted petition a separate issue or is just being buried with this one?
I agree, that needs to be addressed. Why was the followup petition deleted?

Well its safe to assume there is a limited group with POS access and those would be the ones to file the petition. And from what I have been told DS1 has checked with all of the POS operating members.

Thanks for the partial reply, Arkanon. However, there are still outstanding issues regarding the incident.
1) Why was the petition requesting more information deleted?
2) Why wasn't the CEO of the Corp informed of a GM joining the Corp either before or after it happened?
It's good to hear that there was actually a reason why Sharkbait joined the Corp, however the procedure of his joining and the response to questions regarding it afterward were handled *extremely* poorly. I understand that these are not necessarily questions for IA, but they need to be answered to close this incident in a satisfactory manner.

I'll agree with many people here. I don't see any reason for Sharkbait to lie about what he was doing. I've seen/heard of him join corps and leave to fix POS on a fairly regular basis, so I ask:
Why was the petition that DS1 filed (to find out about what sharkbait was doing) deleted?
If this is something that Sharkbait has to do often, don't you think maybe you should start making more robust debugging tools (out of game) to mitigate the chance for situations such as this?

Now we only need to see all the MSN chatlogs between BOB and CCP, see a report on how the ISD reporter was kicked and why, if they were, the petitions and mails sent to find out why a CCP employee joined the corp was left unanswered and deleted. And when that is done every CCP employee having MSN contact with the player base(if the player knows he is a dev ofcourse) needs to remove that person or block him from his MSN(and ofcourse other meens of unfair communications). I pay to play, so either those MSN adresses are made avalible to all the playerbase or else no one gets them. The same with BPO's spawned by Devs and everything else. Fair play, even if you havent been around from the beginning and is bestest buddies with the devs.

It is not possible for a GM or Developer to delete petitions. Those tools quite simply, do not exist. Claims of petitions being deleted are therefore utter fabrication and completely groundless.

I'm glad to hear that Sharkbait does not appear to have committed any misconduct, and that it seems his brief joining of DS1 and granting of senior roles to himself was a necessary function of his job.
However, it should be pointed out that had DS1 been notified in advance of his actions, or if DS1's communications after the event had been responded to, that Sharkbait would never have been caught up in the 'open letter' of Friday, and any stain on his reputation incurred over the course of this weekend would have been avoided. It would not have been neccessary to reveal any details of the petition to any parties, merely informing them of the existance of a bug would have been sufficiant. As it is, it is hardly surprising that his actions when combined with a total lack of communication aroused suspicion, as innocent as they appear to have been.
I hope this will be taken on board by CCP's developer and GM team so that any future misunderstandings of this nature may be avoided. |

Pardon the tinfoil hat moment, but... There is a possibility that a BoB member filed the petition because he noticed some function or behavior that appeared bugged (possibly due to past experience), and it was then dealt with as needed. The GMs could potentially have not responded to the petitions due to fear that the rabid lot that is fueling the current thread would go bat-****-insane about accusations of the developers being in BoB's pocket.
Kind of how things ended up anyway though
