My boot.ini file was missing however my computer still loaded up :S. Crazzy.
I found the copying the backup file and pasting it the c: was the easiest to do. ------------------ Nerfing things only leads to more nerfing, with an endless cycle destroying the game! Prevention is better than the cure! ------------------ |

Second that. Would like to see a big sign that basically says: Patches and installers have been thoroughly tested in field conditions and are safe for use again. Fortunately I have a long skill training, so I am postponing the update a bit. Hope you get things under control soon. Right now I do not dare let the patcher run. |

CCP, you should be ashamed! Once again you show a complete lack of any end to end testing.

+ Copy it into the root directory of your Windows drive (eg. C:\) + Rename it to "boot.ini" + Go to start, then Run and type in "msconfig" + Click on the "boot.ini" tab, and select "Check all boot paths" + There will be a series of popups for the invalid installation paths in the above files (14 if all goes to plan), and the correct settings will be placed in your boot.ini."
OK i have done this, once the popups go away and i try to apply the changes an error comes up saying i'm not the administrator of the computer (thing is I know i am, and i have only one account) and asks me to restart once i restart, again sys config comes up saying some changes have not been made and i get back to beginning (check paths)
(looks like boot.cfg is missing too)
Do you mean restart the whole pc, or just msconfig? If you are able to restart your pc already, then there is no need to keep doing this, as it is loading windows fine.
I mean reboot, now every time i reboot my computer a popup message appears saying that windows is running in some safe mode (not the one that disables anything somehow) and the sytem config program comes up again, everything in there "looks" fine, when i press ok or close it always asks for a reboot, very unusual
are you telling me i should keep it like this now? god only knows what's going on in here

Ok i found out when i started donwloading the broken boot.ini patch by reading history.txt file in my cache directory :
2007.12.05 20:52:21SHUTDOWN [468]User requesting close. 2007.12.06 08:58:26STARTUP [1740] 2007.12.06 08:59:27STARTUP [1140]
So i stopped playing at 20:52:21 yesterday. Then launched old client version 44736 or something like at 8:58:26 GMT today and started patching with classic. When it was done i launched the new trinity classic version at 8:59:27 and started downloading the trinity classic to premium broken boot.ini patch few seconds after.

You go to the trouble of installing all kinds of anti-virus software to protect your system then some company sneaks in a harmful download more dangerous than any virus that has ever made it onto my system.
Unbelievable.

To all who are afraid of loosing their workfiles/art/whatever/**** this is a good time to look into making backups of these files as its not IF but WHEN a harddisk will crash on you.
Sorry, I didnt meant to be a smartass, just a friendly advise..
CCP I feel sorry for you, this is a major screwup... but at least it was not intentional as SoE did with the NGE.

Double check that this is okay, by doing this:
Click start->Run
Type: msconfig <hit enter>
Click 'boot.ini', then click Check All Booth Paths - if this is successful, you're safe to reboot.

Originally by: Meat Missle Edited by: Meat Missle on 06/12/2007 14:19:52 OK, for those who know less about windows than a dog knows physics, here is a simple way to make a boot.ini for you.
Open My Computer, now open the C:\ drive. You will now see folders like "windows" and "my documents". This is the right place to start. Up at the top there is a list of options, file, edit, tools, help. Click on Tools > folder options. Now activate the View tab. Under here you will be selecting, deselecting boxes. Select: Show Hidden Files and Folders Deselect: Hide protected operating system files, Hide extensions for known filetypes.Click Apply, and OK. Now right click anywhere in the white space under C drive, New > Text Document. Name this text document "boot.ini", and when it gives you a message about changing filetypes, click yes/ok. Now right click boot.ini and select OPEN. if it asks you what to open it with, use notepad. Copy the line below into the text document and save it.
[Boot Loader] timeout=30 Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows
[Operating Systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows="Windows XP" /fastdetect
All finished! If you want to hide exensions, protected files and hidden files again, just go back into tools> folder options> view and select the boxes pertaining to them.
If you cannot follow this, contact your local computer service store and have them do this in 10 seconds, while charging you 300 of your currency.
Yeah but having done that my msconfig says that the boot selection is not valid. PC's are not like Macs, different set ups, that is the whole point of running a PC.

To all the people that want to sue CCP for data loss. Wrong target. Sue the incompentent person that caused that data loss by "fixing" your PC.
For any competent repairman fixing a missing boot.ini is a 5 minute job and done without any loss of data on the disk.

Same here, Lawn. I logged in this morning before heading out to work to see my beautiful ships (what a wonderful way to start the day!) I'm sure I share your dismay as my computer just sat there and mocked me with its file "missing or corrupted" message. It was as if it had turned into Nelson Muntz from the Simpsons. I clearly recall hearing a "Ha Ha!" everytime I tried to reboot.
On a suportive note, thanks CCP for doing what you can to rectify the situation. I'm sure all these other posts have been kind (yes, sarcasm intended!) I guess this is another item to add to the "What we've learned today, kids!" column on the chalk board and I do have every bit of confidence that you will help us solve this dilemma.

I have not DL'ed the Premium Edition and am currently running Trinity Classic.
My boot.ini file is safely out of harms way, and a backup is available in another folder, and have an emergency Boot CD available as well.
Currently running Windows XP home edition with all SP upgrades on a Dell, and would really like to test the Premium Download at this time.
I am also available to help troubleshoot the install, you may evemail or convo me in game (My Character = Taqai).

The problem is that it does delete the file regardless of Windows running or not, just so happens that when you try restart Windows the next time you will be greeted with an unfriendly error.
Use the steps provided by the opening post to restore your boot.ini

What bugs me is the fact that this program even needs to touch the boot.ini file. It shouldn't need to and there should not be any editing to that file for a game like this. Im going to have to reinstall my entire OS now. This was a huge screw up.

You know, for everyone whose so "enraged" and "in disbelief", you could sue CCP and put them out of business. Then you can have EA games or some other "big boy" company buy up their game license and forcefeed you nerf-patches until you choke.
Just look at the Battlefield series which places adware on your system, or Sony who KILLED the best star wars game out.
I invite all of you complainers to my low sec system for a party. Ihakana.

I'm not entirely sure about the time I installed the update last night and 4 GMT is like 6 in the morning...
It didn't work from inside Eve, so I used the downloadable "eveclassictopremiumpatch45017.exe" patch.
My computer went on perfectly fine this morning. But now you guys freak me out cause I can't find a "boot.ini" or a "boot.ini.bckp" on my computer.... And my computer doesn't even have a C:\WINDOWS\pss folder.
I'm running Windows XP Professional with SP2 and at least I think I have System Restore on. Isn't checked off in 'My Computer' - 'System Restore' tab at least.
Am I affected after the next boot after update or the second next? Do I have to bother with this or not?
Could it be I have my boot.ini somewhere safer through some security settings changes or third-party stuff like antivirus agent or some such? I'm worried now...thanks for making my day....

1) it doesnt need to touch it, it mistakenly used windows version over its own boot.ini
2) its as simple as copy paste to fix... enjoy reinstalling your OS though.
