I have XP Pro 32bit with all current updates. When I started my computer this morning it failed to load XP. I did a warm restart and it tried again saying it's using the Boot.ini file from the C:\Windows folder. Everything started up fine from there.

So... should I uninstall the original EVE installment, and just download the new one? Is that the only way I can avoid all this computer BS cus honestly, I can't afford to f*ck up the computer lol I wouldn't know how to fix it, or where to start.
Yes if you completely uninstall EVE and redownload the whole client you will be fine. The only people who are having problems are the ones who upgraded thier clients before 4pm.
You will be fine if you didn't do this. But just to be on the safe side install EVE onto a seperate drive or partition to avoid any possible complications.

Originally by: Vertisce Soritenshi What bugs me is the fact that this program even needs to touch the boot.ini file. It shouldn't need to and there should not be any editing to that file for a game like this. Im going to have to reinstall my entire OS now. This was a huge screw up.
That is unnecessary - follow the info in this post and it won't take you more than 5 minutes to fix.

boot.ini does not necessarily show in C when displaying hidden files. A very quick way to see if it is there (and by the way to find those virus files those freebie versions of the virus checkers won't let you delete) is to go: Start - Run - C:/boot.ini and hit enter (it won't harm the PC running it - it will jump up in notepad if it's there). BTW - if you are virus hunting do the same, but just stop at entering the directory Windows wouldn't let you see... |

Well a bit late actualy with the discovering. After the patch, last night when downloaded i turned off my desktop where WinXP Media Center with SP2 was installed, this morning i discovered the problem.
Luckely my Laptop has Vista, meanwhile i'm now reinstalling my entire desktop cause i don't know what happend, but i had to format my partitions before i could re-install an new OS on my system.
Before formatting my partitions i just tried to reinstall. First on my C: Drive, didn't allowe to copy boot files.
Then i thought i try my D: drive to install it on there, i received the message that it couldn't create the Folder \Windows, the last thing i could do was using an bootable CD where an OS was on, copy all my documents to my external HD and format my partitions. At this moment i'm re-installing Windows XP Mediacenter with SP2 again.
Nice game which messes around with OS Bootfiles.

Originally by: Kalane Vataros Ok, on the boot.ini, there is a second box you have to uncheck on windows xp, (yes, i had to make a new boot.ini) and to be honest, they told you most everything of what to do...tools/folder options/view, Show hidden files and folders and uncheck hide protected system files.
This is a very easy thing to do, and if people like FHPhantom would start doing what is stated instead of yelling about it, it shouldn't be hard to make a boot disk and then from there make a boot.ini. All the information needed is already IN THIS POST.
So CCP made a monumental screw up to a file, which microsoft really should have protected better in the first place, do you think they have some sort of illuminati ring designed to destroy the computers of anyone that played wow or everquest to be the sole dominator of the MMORPG world?
LOL and the gun manufacturers are to blame for murders. CCP made a MAJOR MAJOR mistake, i've been in the PC gameing worl for over 15 years... can't remember this ever happening, but mistakes do happen and it could of been worse and it is simple enough to fix.. for some, some people just know where the power button is

Originally by: Pacarus Maxilus I do have a question. I restored my dll last night. But does that mean that I can not run the download that caused this in the first place?
Surely the patch is updated then? So long as you don't run this patch again, you'll be fine. Once your dll is restored you can play EVE itself - just don't run that faulty updater again.

I think I have just been inspired to upgrade my computer...
So I can get the most from the Trinity upgrade, and the lack of ability to access my current computer.
I am not computer savvy and dont want to pay some techie at PC world ú100 quid to install a small file.
If I have ú600 what would be a good system to go for ?

Well, after having done a system restore it looks like the entire EVE game got reverted back to classic however when I go to load EVE i get a message pointing to a slew of missing files relating to Trinity. So now that I have EVE completely uninstalled I suppose Ill have to download the client and Trinity over again.

Hold on a moment there CCP Pete, what makes you think that people who upgrade their game client will also have their Inernet Explorer/Firefox or other browser open when doing the upgrade???
Luckily you've stated that Vista isn't affected because after installing the upgrade the first thing I did was shut down my gf laptop. So can you imagine I haven't read this post at 02:00 am GMT as I was dog tired and just went straight to bed without any incling of any issue at all.
What you should have told people to do was to make a 'System Restore Point/Check Point' (Start-> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore) before doing this upgrade. That way you at least give people the chance that they may be able to salvage the old system settings after the botched install, but no that's not what has happened and now people may have a serious pc issue with deleted system files for which many will struggle to restore.

Sorry, I didnt meant to be a smartass, just a friendly advise..
CCP I feel sorry for you, this is a major screwup... but at least it was not intentional as SoE did with the NGE.
SoEs NGE turned a good game into a sub standard game, CCP have turned my PC from a working computer into an expensive fan. There's a qualitative difference....
C.
At least you can fix your computer... SoE is still trying eh!!

no idea if anyone pointed it out already but there's another way to see if there's a boot.ini present.
got to start/run or press the windowskey+r type in "msconfig" - without the "" of course. :)
you'll get into the system configuration utility, there should be a tab called boot.ini - if not, start fixing.

Edited by: JeanLuc Rome on 06/12/2007 14:33:51 I did this solution and it work just fine ^^
Repair boot.ini at About.com Access Recovery Console
You don't need to own a Windows CD... I had to repair Dell laptop with a HP laptop OS CD... as long as it can load windows from CD-Drive you should be fine.
You won't have to delete your drive or install Windows again neither... OS CD is just so you can access Recovery Console from it and not from your Hardrive

Everyone makes mistakes. This is a sucky one. But you people who lost all your important documents should have a backup. You cannot blame ccp for this, you could have lost the same data any other way.
In general if you are doing important stuff on your computer then you should have another partition for video games.

Hey I have the Win Xp Pro Service pack 2, and I went and looked in the system start up and edit and I read this in the edit menu. [boot loader] timeout=1 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
now how can i tell if I am ok or not? I read all the instractuions but it keeps confusing me,I havent rebooted yet but I did install the patch lastnight 20h00pm Canada-Quebec-Eastern Time Dec 05.
I also tried this and got no answer from Windowx XpPro
Check the root directory of your hard drive and see if you have a boot.ini file, if so then you are not affected. The file is normally hidden so you need to click Tools : Folder Options : View and select "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" to be able to see it.
You can also check for the presence of this file by clicking Start : Control Panel : System : Advanced : Startup and Recovery : Settings (third button down). Windows will alert you if the boot.ini file is missing.
So what can I do? or what am I supposed to do?

OK
I followed the original instructions and d/l the file, renamed it to boot.ini and put in in my e: drive (where windows is installed, not c: ) When I type msconfig, I dont' have a boot.ini tab to select.
I kept reading the other posts and someone said to use the boot.ini backup in the windows/pss folder. I just checked that folder and I don't have a boot.ini backup file in that folder.
I am running WinXP Pro 2002 w/SP2 installed. I have a c: drive that is for storage and my e: drive is my windows / eve installation drive.

If its all installed and was installed before you did the OS reinstall the damage was done and repaired you will be fine running the game.

+ Copy it into the root directory of your Windows drive (eg. C:\) + Rename it to "boot.ini" + Go to start, then Run and type in "msconfig" + Click on the "boot.ini" tab, and select "Check all boot paths" + There will be a series of popups for the invalid installation paths in the above files (14 if all goes to plan), and the correct settings will be placed in your boot.ini."
Ok so when I run msconfig the program locks up and I have to press Ctrl+alt+delete to end the unresponsive program.
I do not have a backup file in my PSS folder. Out of the box user here with a lot of important work files on this PC.
Any help with this? |
