I have an 8800GTS and EVE still gets crappy framerates (30-60 in combat)...
My Setup
As you can see, my system chews through other games and high-end benchmarks. None of the mentioned tweaks help me much in EVE. Turning off sound both in-game and via prefs.ini makes no difference. Process priority makes no difference, even when exefile is set to be the only process running on the second CPU core by setting it to "realtime" and disabling the CPU 0 affinity. Even turning on/off anti-aliasing via drivers or the advancedDevice=1 tweak has very little bearing on performance. I do have vsync off, both in driver settings and via the "present interval" setting. Increasing the buffersize hasn't helped either. The only thing that really makes a difference is turning the LOD on, which has a downright stupid implementation in EVE. There are 2 detail levels for all objects: on & off with nothing in-between. Either objects get rendered at full polycount or they turn into dots past a certain distance. X-(
Basically the EVE engine is just murderously clunky...
I won't be surprised if the DX10 version runs faster as well as looking better. :-S

Navigate to your CCP\Eve\ Directory, usually C:\Program Files\CCP\EvE\
Right click on "eve.exe", check "Run this program in compatibility mode (Windows XP SP2)"
Then you should get the advanced device options in the Esc menu while running eve.
I could be completely off base in saying that Vista wont run the advancedDevice=1 line, but I couldn't get the adv options to show up until I ran eve.exe in XP Sp2 compatibility mode.
just my 2isk, hope this helps some frustrated people out there
I tried checking the SP2 compatibility you spoke of, but I am not seeing a XP SP2 in the compatibility listings.
Any other suggestions?

My, my. Isn't this a fun thread? It doesn't seem like many people are getting helped, so allow me to make a suggestion:
With the change of just a few random nVidia GPU 3D options I can drop my framerate from 200 in station to 20. 80 in busy areas to 8. I'm not kidding. Give it a try. Learn the nVidia control panel and kill every advanced option and fiddle with each one at a time. It might take a while, and honestly I'm not even sure what all I did to get my good framerate.
If you use a nVidia GPU be sure to navigate to your advanced 3D configuration profile for EVE and list what each option is set to. Once there are enough configs + framerates in the thread readers might extract some useful information regarding their 5 frames per second issue. I'm afraid to do it myself right now because my nVidia card is controlling my monitors btightness and whenever I open the panel my screen goes dead... (die nVidia!)
I'm really not sure how CCP missed by so much with this. It would be nice to take a gander at the code and figure this one out. Trying to understand it from a blackbox model just isn't going to happen. I mean, it's all so unpredictable:
For example just today I left a station and set a waypoint. The SECOND I set that waypoint my framerate dropped from 80 to 40 and stayed like that until I reached my destination, and the framerate jumped back up to 80. It isn't just setting waypoints that does this. My framerate will randomly jump between the two depending on what I'm doing in game.
Another strange issue, when entering an area with lots of dust in space my framerate will drop quite significantly, however, this did not occur on my old SocketA computer.
The interface seems to be connected with the 3D in the background (which is unbelievably annoying) and freezes everything or drops frames when something menu related is changed.
Nothing seems to stay cached. I can enter and leave The Blockade a thousand times and still get that 5 second freeze upon entering.
And finally: Python, lol. |

Despite the higher res monitor and max graphics settings, I expected the graphics for this system to be smooth as silk; instead I got these numbers 50-55 FPS in station 20-30 FPS floating in space 9-12 FPS when missioning (lvl 4 Angel Extravaganza)
Something was definitely wrong and it sure wasn't going to be fixed by with a second 8800 in SLI... I could have cried.
Eventually it was apparent that I got shafted by the internet-based computer business I purchased the system from. While I rebuilt the computer to upgrade video, power supply, cooling, etc., I never re-installed the OS from scratch. Bad move on my part. While the BIOS setup wasn't too bad, there must have been some issues with the hard drive image they copied for the windows installation. Obviously I had to reformat and start over at that point.
After a long afternoon I restarted EVE with fingers crossed... 190-200 FPS in station 60-90 FPS floating in space 50-60 FPS when missioning (lvl 4 Angel Extravaganza)
Didn't cry but I was rather misty eyed... Big s--- eating grin too
Here's the step by step process I did to get everything optimized. This may be of particular use to those who are less experienced with computer setup, and also for anyone with my motherboard/video-card setup:
1) Optimized BIOS settings for the computer configuration ( get help from someone knowledgable on this one if you need it)
2) Reformatted the drive and re-installed Windows XP
3) Run windows disk cleanup and disk defragmenter (Windows install is sometimes messy)
4) Installed the ASUS wireless internet driver to get online. Nothing else from the ASUS driver disc. Note: Don't leave the ASUS driver disc in your drive when rebooting. It won't work. Just remove it.
5) Activate the Windows license and download all updates
6) Download the nvidia driver pack and audio drivers from the ASUS website for the motherboard and install. reboot as required
7) Download the nvidia video card driver and install. Reboot as required. After this step, the windows device manager should show no hardware components with question mark symbols. If you have a different configuration, use this information to gather/install any other drivers you may need
8) Downloaded the nvidia nTune utility to the display control panel. Walked through the optimization options, setting for application to determine most settings
9) Downloaded the recommended TuneUp utility (http://www.tune-up.com). Great piece of software! Used all optimization tools except for the display since that was covered using the nvidia utility.
10) Installed EVE and updated the prefs.ini file to increase the buffer size to half my RAM (1000), and add the advancedDevice=1 line. All color settings maxed at 1920x1200 ...
Can you try so "disable" the SLI feature and then measure your frame rate?
I have just installed Windows XP pro 64-bit edition and all of the laterst drivers and so on.
BUT: My SLI indicator is not showing any results and i'm not getting any preformance increase with my SLI cards enabled.
The SLI indicator is present (but no activity in EVE) when i choose AFR and so on. And it's gone when i choose SINGLE GPU rendring.
So whats wrong with EVE or my EVE profile for the Nvidia drivers?`
PS: My Computer Specs is atm
ABIT KN8 SLI motherboard AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 1GB PC-3200 RAM cl2. 2x 10000rpm 150gb Raptor's (in raid Stripe mode). 2x XFX GF7800 GT 256mb in SLI
Running the game in window mode and 1024*768 32bit. Getting about 150-170 FPS in station 50-60 FPS floating in space (outside station) With or without SLI enabled.

Edited by: Andrue on 13/03/2007 08:32:10 Having spent money on an upgrade recently and with the bits arriving over a few days I can give further insight into what helps FPS with Eve.
Starting system: AMD64 3500+ NVidia 6800LE 512MB RAM (one module had just failed) Realtec onboard sound (client runs with sound enabled)
Worst case FPS (Pirate Invasion in heat of battle):7 Outside a quiet station:45 Outside a gate with concord and a couple of player ships:60
Added RAM, fps became:15/45/60 (no change on last two) client returned to being smooth as it was before I lost one of my 512MB modules.
Graphics card updated to 7900GS:16/65/80 (minor change to worst case, big change to others)
CPU upgraded to AMD64 4000+ (single core):19/70/85
Sound card upgraded to Creative Xi-fi:25/70/85 (big change in Pirate Invasion).
My conclusions:Graphics-wise the NVidia 6800LE is more than capable of playing Eve. Sound is a serious CPU hog unless you have a decent card that can take the load away. You need at least 1GB of RAM. CPU is important.
IMO when upgrading the order of importance is: Soundcard (if you play with sound) CPU RAM (get the fastest your motherboard supports) Graphics card but really only if you have something truly dire or money to burn.
Edit:When buying a soundcard do check what reviewers say about mainboard CPU usage. I chose the Xi-fi because several reviewers specifically mentioned that it reduced CPU usage. It's possible that this is a unique feature of this card so be careful :) -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

I put this in its own post but I'll also add it here..
I've been looking at this problem for a while, I was wondering why my 8800GTX was only pulling 70-80 FPS in station and dire fps while in space.
Well, I c r acked it. In the graphics option there is a setting for Enable advanced Naturalpoint Tracker head tracking (btw its mispelt option says Trackir) enabling this effectively halves your running fps and causes the game to pause every second. I disabled the option and my orbit station fps shoots up to 170. Low for a GTX I know but I'm not running it on optimal hardware after only have a couple hundred quid budget but still bloody excellant considering.
So, for other peeps having FPS probs or unexplainable pauses check that this option is not enabled.

Same here. Anything other than 24-bit color gives me a 1.5 FPS.
16-bit Z-buffer has been my only really effective change. Well, buffersize too, since I run 2 gigs. Though I wonder what the effect is of running a gig in buffersize with two clients :-/

I,therefore, believe that vista, in addition to being absolute crap, won't run the advanced graphic lines.
The lines do,however, work wonderfully, as evidenced by my mom, who also plays, and has incredible success with that. Thanks,Brunis, for making her (and through that, my) life easier.

I really don't know where I'm going wrong with my setup. While I'm content with my current FPS, it boggles my mind why others have so much better than me (who often have far worse system specs than I do). As far as I'm concerned, 20fps is perfectly fine, as it's not jerky, albeit noticeable when compared to 50fps.
I run in station about 50fps, quiet station at 35fps, and it can cut all the way down to around 15fps during missions (due to having dialup, I don't know what it would be in fleet situations).
I am running an aBit motherboard (NV-8 I believe), AMD Sempron64 3200+ CPU, Sapphire Radeon x550 Video, and 2048mb of OCZ Platinum PC3200 DDR @ 2.5-3-2-8 timings (wish I knew about "you can't have 2-3-2-5 with two double sided DIMMs" before I bought it ). I am running Windows XP. Only thing I have running usually is my antivirus (guess I could try to disable it and see how that works out). I run it at 1280x1024 resolution, at 24-bit w/8 bit alpha and 32-bit z-buffer w/8 bit stencil (it won't let me change it, as every time I click close window it goes back), Z Buffer (no buffer makes ships and stuff disappear).
I know people who use slower processors, half the RAM, and 1-2 year older video cards who are shocked that I can play EVE at under 70fps.
I have turned off sound using ctrl-alt-shift-F12, and got 1fps boost.
I have enabled the advanced display and found Interval Immediate was already enabled.
I upped my buffer size. It didn't boost FPS, but did take the 1-2 second menu lag out (whole client would freeze until the menu appeared 1-2 seconds later).
Turned off "ship occludes sun" for 5fps boost.
Turned all windows and UI to 0 transparency for about 3fps boost.
When I ctrl-tab twice, I see it jumps up to over 80fps immediately.
So now my video caps out at 57fps in station, unless I turn off the UI (not really viable except in limited situations).
Someone must have an idea what else I can tweak to turn this up. I have a great sig that I was once proud of. After much moderation, I've found the world will never see it again. |

(tried to edit, but it said thread does not exist )
I turned off hardware acceleration of my sound card (Realtek AC'97 on board integrated from nForce 4 implementation). All it did was:
1) Make my sound card go into "emulated mode"
2) Make all sounds end harshly, as if they are cut off a millisecond too early.
3) Cut my fps by 8 instead of improving it
Turned off Anti-virus, no effect on fps at all. I have a great sig that I was once proud of. After much moderation, I've found the world will never see it again. |

in first to make it objective i must say when i got playing mp3 and eve sounds on my fps are sometime falling down from xx to 20 +/-. when i turn sound completly off fps stays on same line, like 90-100 in the belt, on the POS i got 45-60 in case of zooming with sound on, but no pcs or npcs here, nothing to make a sound ... my rig: Asus P5B DLX, i965P Intel E6400 2.13 @ 3.43 Ghz G.Skill 2x1GB 800mhz @ 866 5-5-5-15 2.15V Asus X800XT 256MB PCIE in first case i think to have sounds on there is a need of discrete sound card... any1 have experience with cards like SB audigy, live or X-fi?

Nothing overclocked til now and all the latest drivers installed. fps in station close to 350 fps in space close to 170 while warping fps in space close to 90 while sitting undocked in front of a station fps in combat around 75 All with standard settings in eve except i gave it 512meg buffer.
And now to my big problem...
Everytime i hoover the mouse over one of the other running progs in the taskbar (my browser for example) i get a nasty popping up tooltip telling me i hoovered over this button and my framerate is totally broke at 0.5 fps... as long as this tooltip is shown. I tried every setting in the ATI controlcenter with no effec the fps is basicly the same with drivers set to performance or set to quality, fps ends up the same with any setting The only thing changing is the quality of the graphics and fps in station , but fps in space stays the same Expecting a huge fps boost by buying a 160 dollar videocard and barely get any,is pretty dissapointing Having 10-4 fps with the 9600xt and now having 20-10 fps isn't worth $160 imho I tried every optimalisation suggested in this thread with no effect In missions the game has still unplayable low fps dropping below 10 fps making giving commands to drones and modules getting delayed responce Launching and docking drones makes the screen freeze for a few seconds which is vital for getting out of missions before beeing blown up etc (rather don't leave my t2 drones behind every time it gets hot) I have sound turned off because it takes off another 5 fps Running a p4 [email protected] 768Mb Ram Asus p4s533 mobo sb audigy soundcard His radeon x1650xt Turbo IceQ video
Seems to me this game is more cpu then gpu effected Tried this new video card on other games and am very excited about the awesome graphics and fps with all settings to max , but in eve ,the game i play most of the time it didn't help me I'm playing nfs carbon and x3 reunion on max quality settings without problems now ,so guess what i play all day now, not eve thats for sure My 14 hrs online time dropped to more like 15 min to change skills and chat a bit with my corp

Dual core processors are now under 100$
You could probably get a new motherboard + CPU for 150 that fits all the components you already have.
Then just set a client to each core, and your fps should be about 3x on each client than what you are getting now.

Also for vista users in addition to running in xp2 compatibility mode - disabling desktop composition will, if you have dwm (desktop windows manager) or aero still enabled, basically knock out aero so vista is not utilizing your graphics card for its fancy transitions and glassy transparencies. Even if you are in full screen, vista is still using your graphics card to keep this up in the background. So to do this, check the box next to the disable desktop composition option in the same spot you chose compatibility mode.

And now my question is why the hell my fps in space is 40fps... in space fight it is something like 3/9fps... When I'm in the space and in my sight are some ships my fps drops to the 9... So... I do not know what to do. Upgraded BIOS, reinstalled system (even created new partition), installed new graphic drivers... still it doesn't work as it should be.
And as everyone I have this funny thing with hiding UI, FPS jumps to the heavens... (80?)
