Prefs.ini must be from a very very old version of EVE. There is no Prefs.ini file for the newest (6 months or newer) version of eve.
So how do we do these changes to a non-existent file?

You're right about the no buffersize variable in the prefs.ini. That variable was non existent for me (just installed eve last week on my new-to-me computer). However, on my laptop that has had eve installed for about 5 months had the prefs.ini file. So I just added the buffersize variable manually. That shouldn't hurt right?
Also - how do you tell how much memory a specific program is using?

buffsize made no difference at all unfortunately, the memory still use the same amount of MB.
You can go into your task manager. On the right hand side of the process list shows the amount of ram used.

An update to debunk the buffersize myth. Adding/Changing the buffersize to equal 1024MB or even 1024 on a 2GB RAM system, does not change the amount of memory used by EVE. Therefore ,this myth is busted :)

Just found prefs.ini. Using Vista Ultimate. Found it under: "Username" > AppData > Local > CCP > EVE > settings

This thread is huge and very long!
I've tried just about everything everyone has suggested and have not had much luck getting my FPS above 14 in station and 7 flying around.

Biggest improver of framerate for me has been turning cache to "off". The game is now really playable for me. It's been an amazing improvement! I'm tempted to start turning on bloom and hdr and all that!

Are you turning off the cache in the game or the video card? nVidia control panel has all kinds of options to choose from, it's hard to know what to have on or off.

I find this game to be a great addiction, and a thread with helpful hints on gameplay and machine performance is very welcome. If I didn't need the help, I would not come looking for it, and I wouldn't discourage the availability of it.
That said, a summation of what's currently useful and no longer useful would be a good thing.

Relas,
I had same issue with frame rate months ago.... turned out to be my CPU was running hot... try adding more cooling to you CPU. Hope it works for you.

Sorry Lucor, that won't help him much/at all.
The GeForce 6200 is your sticking point.
Relas, bite the bullet and upgrade your video card. I have a laptop pc and built a desktop with Intel GMA 950 Graphics (Integrated), which I later stuck a GeForce 6200 LE TurboCache into, and the GMA950 was better. The integrated graphics ran games better than the 6200. Oh the 6200 had Hardware Transform and Lighting, sure, but could it make use of it? No. Not in the slightest.
I initially bought the card as a stand-between whilst waiting for the 8800GT for my girlfriend's rig to arrive, so I could install Vista and get it up and running.
Absolutely abysmal performance. Not just in Eve. WoW was nearly unplayable, even Warcraft 3 wasn't that crash-hot at 1280x1024 and above.
The ONLY thing you can do (other than living with the poor performance of your card or upgrading it) would be to try these settings:
1024x768 (or if you can mod the config, the drop it to 640x480). 16-bit colour. Lowest settings for everything - turn all graphical effects off. Don't try to use premium content, I doubt Eve would let you download it anyhow, but if it did, DON'T.
Otherwise, it sounds like you've given everything a shot.
For a new video card (if you are on a budget/don't want to spend much), you'll need to get an AGP GeForce 7600GT/GS or an AGP 6600GT). Then you will be able to enjoy decent FPS with reasonable quality settings.
For reference all highest settings with HDR @ 1680x1050 on my X1900XTX 512Mb (not a new card) gives me ~35-120FPS depending on areas/number of objects. Just need to get AA going with it...
I have little doubt that it would lag to **** in 0.0/fleet battles, but haven't tested that yet as am on trial account to check graphics updates out...
My recommendation would be to purchase a whole new PC based around Intel's Core 2 architecture and a single 8800GT 512Mb, as that will give you the best performance for money.
Or if you want to go cheap, get an AMD Athlon64 X2, say a 4000+, 2gb Ram, ATi Radeon HD 3850 256Mb.

I just put an 8600gt on my HP AMD 64 desktop and it runs new Eve client very well, and its fairly cheap. Plus, 2 extra gb of ram ($46 from newegg) and Im getting over 100 fps in station, and averaging 40 to 75 everywhere else. So there are some inexpensive options for running Trinity with new graphics.

FYI:I just installed an 8800GT and one area where it makes a huge difference is in the rendering of clouds. These no longer have any significant impact on framerate. I don't know what the peak FPS is because I have interval=1 to limit it to 60fps but after several hours running missions the lowest I ever saw it go (during the height of L4 Recon 1/3) was 52fps.
That compares with the low 20s for my 7900GS. -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

On the topic of FPS increases during gang / fleet / pos battles. I have taken all the typical steps of minimizing overview, turning off effects and turrets, zooming all the way out, etc...and despite that I get abysmal FPS when there are more than a couple dozen ships / objects on the screen. I'm talking one frame every 2 - 5 seconds in extreme cases. My computer is a 2.4ghz P4 with 1gb ram and a GeForce 4 Ti-4200 128mb video card. Now I know that most of you will pick out my video card immediately as the culprit. I'll admit it's far from the newest on the market, but it plays every other game quite nice, despite it's age. Only with EVE does it suffer. So is there some mystery setting or system optimization I can use to get EVE running smoothly in fleet combat, or do I simply have to shell out a few hundred for a new video card and "brute force" the good performance I need? ----------------------------------- You will be assimilated...bunghole! |

Here's something I found, I hope this isn't a repeat since I didn't read the 17 pages of replies.
My system runs a NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti4200 video card. After warping to locations where there is a gas/dust cloud (found in mission rooms, exploration rooms and perhaps elsewhere) the fps drops considerably to about 3 to 6fps.
What I've found is after warping to these gas cloud locations if I hit alt-enter the fps increases to up over 10fps. For some reason switching between windowed and full screen does the trick. It's not a huge increase in fps but the difference in playability is indeed huge.

Do you switch from Windowed to Full and back again or remain on the new setting? I'd like to use that help next time. Alt-Enter, thanks for the tip.

Also if you use rivatuner and a nvidia card you can change direct draw settings to use more RAM for PCI texture memory if you are on a PCI video card like me, AND if you are on classic you can disable all shaders, period, and it will help alot.
I have a huge CPU bottleneck, and by doing only those two things I went from 3 fps to 20.

Im on a 1.8 ghz cpu with a 6200, if you dont mind using classic, get rivatuner (dont mess with the clock speeds) and on the main tab there are two little buttons with triangles on them under each listed thing. Under one of those tabs there is a way to change direct draw settings, and you can increase ram used for texture memory on a PCI card. Also disable shaders altogether using rivatuner under that same menu.
