A rail ferox with no skills (using skills will only make the rail advantage higher as they add more to gun damage then to missile damage, surgical strike 3%/level, warhead upgrades 2%/level etc) will do 20% more dps than a missile ferox if using anti matter, equal dps with thorium.
Only way for a missile ferox to outdamage a rail ferox is to use it's fitting advantage to fill out the lowslots with ballistic controlls (where the rail user would have to use PDUs to fit his guns).
The advantage from a missile ferox is not damage but fitting, you can fit a much better tank.
I fitted out a railgun ferox over the weekend, and I must say I wasn't impressed by it. Either it's because I was using iridium (in 5 250mm's) or that I only have 338,426 sp in gunnery (I have 482,733 sp in missiles, and 5.4mil in total).
But yes, using missiles allows for a much better tank, with 5 250mm rails fitted, I had used 95% of the grid.
Just noticed I don't have Surgical Strike, so that may be it.

Go with 5x250 (or if you have problem with the fitting 200mm) + 2x assault and then add a good web. I use a 90% web, cost about 5-6m but but it's worth it. A note about webs, a 90% web will half the speed compared to a 80%, the higher you get the more each % is worth.
For rails I use my Brutix, as it's far more deadly with the bonus (I have all major gunnery skills at lvl 4/5) and that then leaves me to use the Ferox as a missile boat.
High: 5 x Arbalest + 2 x 250 Med: AB II, Med Bosster II, EM, Thermal/Kinietic, Target Painter Lo: 4 x BCU
Does all lvl 3 missions, except for spy stash. Got warp scrambbled and it was adios muchachos. Had to use my Brutix with my webber, and target painter to finish that mission. (Note to self: Always take out the warp scrambler before the webber )
If you want a rail platform, then the Brutix is much better, and with the increased power grid it will get from the MKII project fitting 7 x 250 won't be much of a problem using max skills and a couple of pduII.
As for the Ferox I lost, well I had a spare one sitting in my hangar and the money came in handy. I'll use it to kit out my Ishtar in 3 days time.

I've tweaked my set up since I last posted in this thread and have yet to have any worries about the spy stash mission or any other lvl3 mission with this set up. Havent gone below 50% shields, if that, with this setup. And the only mission that brought me down to 50% was spy stash.
High: 5x limos heavy lanchers 2x 150mm Scout rails Med: 2x Active hardners (rat specific) 1x T2 10Mn AB 1x T2 Large Shield extender 1x T2 Small shield booster Low: 3x t2 PDU 1x BCU
With this set up you can run the small booster and the 2 hardners the indefintely. If the need arises to harden vs 3 dmg types you can sub out the AB for a 3rd hardner and run that also indefintely. The 2 150's and a drone bay of 5 mixed med drones takes care of the frigs. With the small t2 booster givin you 30hps every 2 sec and the ferox's natural resists coupled with the hardners you will be hard pressed to find a way to get your shields below 50% in a lvl 3 mission. Woudl not advise sitting in front of those sentries in spy stash too long though. Still leaves ample time to take care of them though.

This is my take on the ferrox/ lvl 3 kill missions
Tried the 5 heavys 2 150mm rails to start with meds large shield exp/shield amp/shield booster/2 act hardeners lows 4 pds Is total crap heavys doing crap dammage took an age to kill anything
Next 5 arby assaults 250 rail 150 rail 2 large named shield expanders/shield booster II/2 act hardeners 4 pds Is
really tough tank can take all lvl 3s including spy stash/black market hub and modrus without running or warping...can smack down those crappy webbing frigs pretty fast even when they close and orbit
cons....slow to kill bigger cruisers /relativly low firepower
have done 6 weeks of lvl 3 s with the above set up without probs....
Current set up i am trying atm 4 250 comp coil 250s 3 arby assaults large shield exp shield boost II 3 act hardeners 4 pds IIs
looks promising so far :P

Each to there own I guess but with all the missles skills at least at lvl 3 you should (and I do) see some decent damage. If the lancher set up was so awful you would not see about 85% of the set ups here using heavies. But I'd like to also try the rails and lancher combo but I'm hard pressed to give up the Large T2 extender and the grid is too tight otherwise with the rails, least atm.

Yup found the 5 heavies sucked big time to start with then after some training(mainly for the assaults)...all new skills to lvl 3 tried it again was better but not much .... I can kinda understand the real bad damm against frigs but what gets me is even after training the new skills...was getting hits(using the correct damm type for the rats) on Cruisers of 120/45/65 etc the odd decent hit mixed in with a lot of unexplainable crap hits...btw hitting on the same cruisers consistently with light missiles(again using the correct damm type) of 65 or so have a rate of fire with assaults of 8.2 secs 14.5 on heavys....... I would really like to try the 5 250 rails as well but for that would have to drop the large shield extender and i like the 6000 plus shields with 60/80 resist to all

I'm thinking of a 5x heavy launcher, 2x medium NOS setup for my ferox. Would a target painter be a good idea in one of the med slots, or would it not make enough of a difference against intys and other fast frigates?

Never mind, I just tried, and the answer is no, it would not be a good idea. Now I just need the grid and CPU for a shield extender and I'll be good...

Been flying on the test server for a laugh:
5 arbies, med nos, modal ion blaster 2 large shield extender, med booster, em + thermal hardeners 4 PDS II
Rock Solid i must say, probably going to use it on TQ for NPCing.
Will run the booster + hardeners for a looong time, maybe forever. With booster running, and at ~30% shield, your regen will be about 65-70/sec total, with resistances 50%+. Bit slow, no tackle gear, but has beaten a lot of pvp battlecruisers, so its solid enough.

Edited by: MWEI on 24/09/2005 00:05:05 Its pretty easy to do lv3 missions with ferox the problem is, it takes WAY too long. Im looking for a way to fit my ferox so I can finish Gurista extravaganza in under 3 hours. So far I have come up with this
5x "malk heavy launcher" (no need tow waste cash for tiny benifit) 2x 125mm prototype for those annoying time consuming webing frigates 1 large shield booster 2 hardners 1 10mn AB 1 web (finish the frigates much faster)
3 ballisic control 1 pdu
I figure it should be able to finish lv3 pretty fast with plenty of tank, my old setup with rails and drones takes way too long for my liking.
Any suggestions for a fast mission setup?
btw, whos idea was it that you cant use MWD in deadspace?

My Setup: Handles all the Lev 3 stuff:
2 Malkuth Assault, 3 Malkuth Heavies 2 250 Scouts
Med Extender Med Booster II Boost Amp 2 Eace specific Passive Hardners
Local Powerplant Tracking Mod, Damage Mod, Balistic Control
4 Hobgoblin drones (soon to be able to use heavy drones)
The only missions I struggle with are drone missions, for them I use my Cara setup with 5 assault launchers and some tricks.

I use this:
5x T2 250mm, 2x heavy/assault 1x M T2, 1x amp, 1x web/10 MN T2 AB, 2x active hardeners 4x PDU T2 5x med drones
This is one expensive boat to fly and to lose. Costs well over 60m to fit all this. By the way, everything fits, with room to spare.
I have not done any of the hard missions so far. I just got the spy stash mission yesterday and have not tried it. I hope I dont get pwned. But other than that, this setup takes out any and all targets I have seen so far. Warp into spot at 40, lock all frigs, and they go down in a single volley from the guns. Cruisers take a little longer, but not by much.

I have a nice fitting for someone who actually just started flying ferox. Started using this setting after round about 1 month of playing. Still using it since I'm training basic learnings lvl5.
High: 5 x XR-3200 / Advanced "Limos" Heavy Missile Bay 2 x 150mm Prototype I Gauss Gun
Med: 1 x Med Shield Booster II 3 x hardeners 1 x Large Shield Extender
Low: 1 x Ballistic Control 2 x Mark I Generator Refitting: Diagnostic System 1 x Quantum Co Processor
3 x VESPA Drones
The hardeners are always different for different NPCs (Yes, I'm using 3 hardeners against guiristas, 2 x Thermal and 1 EM). The Rails get Antimatter ammo... perfect against EVERY frig/drone below 14km + the Vespas! Heavy Missiles are individually fitted (e.g. 4xHavoc, 1xEM for Guiristas or 4xWiddow 1xEM against Angels).
When skills get better the CPU will leave for something else ;)!
I can fly every LVL3 mission (my agent has q17,system is 0.6, 1900LPs max) with this setup. No problems with Angel Extra or Guiristas Extra! Don't even have to warp out inbetween.

The ferox is by far the best battle cruiser in the game. It can handle every lvl3 mission thrown at it.
Highs: 5xheavy missile launchers (try to get arbs) 2x250mm rails (try to get proto's)
Mids: 1xmedium shield booster (named) 3xhardner (named or tech II) (for angel missions) or 2xhardner & 1 painter/ab 1xlarge shield extender (named or tech II)
Lows: 4xpdu (tech II if possible) or 3xpdu & 1 bcu

4 X Advanced Limos Heavies 1 X Arbalest Heavy 2 X Proto 150mm railguns w/ AM/Iridium
1 X Tech 2 Large Shield Booster 3 X Named Hardeners EM/Kin/Thrm 1 X Named Webber
2 X BCU 2 X Tech 2 Power Diagnostic Systems
Seems to work well on all the lvl 3's so far however I have not done Spy Stash or Extrav etc.
I'm going to try the 2 Large shield expanders

I have done 2 missions of lvl 3 so far, but I had lots of trouble with them. One was Silence the informant, which is a tough one as I understood. The other was one with sansha's for a 73k reward, can't remember the name of the mission but it seemed easy: kill some rats and return within 2 hours.
The Silence mission wouldn't let me kill more then 2 drones before I took armor damage. My setup was horrible: 3 x limos heavy launchers 2 x arbalest light launchers 1 x 250mm scout railgun Iron/AM 1 x med nos
1 x Large shield booster 1 x Kinetic hard. 1 x Thermal hard. 1 x 10mn ab. 1 x Cap recharger 15%
2 x ballistic control 2 x T2 PDS
I then changed my setup to: 3 x limos heavy 2 x Xr-2000 heavy 1 x dual scout 150mm iron/am 1 x med nos
1 x named med booster 1 x large shield extender 1 x em hard 1 x thermal hard 1 x 10mn ab
2 x T2 PDS 2 x T1 PDS Then I did the 2nd mission which seemed easy from the description, but wasn't at all. I did better, but not near enough. My cap was gone too fast and I had to use my booster nearly all the time.
Now I'm going to try:
3 x Limos heavy 2 x Xr-2000 heavy 2 x med nos
1 x T2 Med booster 1 x EM hard. 1 x Thermal hard. 1 x large extender 1 x T2 cap recharger
3 x T2 PDS 1 x cap power relay (20% cap recharge -10% cap max).
Hopefully this setup will work better, or the missions get easier :) I also had BC skill at one, now at three. Most shieldskills at lvl IV, some at lvl 3. Missile skills at lvl 3-4.

I will be able to use the T2 shield mods in about 2 days. Yes they are available, but I probably can't fit everything with the powergrid available with the 4x-10%=-40% max powergrid.
A standard ferox has 925powergrid. With my skills and the 3PDS I have about 2k powergrid. Take 40% off that and I'm just above 1k. The 2 T2 large extenders alone will take 2x440powergrid...I'll never have enough for the heavy launchers.
But how do you deal with the 4x35%=140% loss of cap recharging? I'm worried about not having fast enough cap recharge to keep on going..

Your initial setup was horrible as you said. You must decide what weapons to fit and use all of the same type for maximum effect. If you use the Ferox as a missile boat as I do, then perhaps once your skills are ok you could try the following:
High: 5 x Limos/Malkuth (Arbalest if you can afford them), 2 x 200/Dual 150s use lead ammo to save cap
Med: Medium Booster II(when you have the skills) EM Hardner, Med extender, AB II, Target Painter/Cap Recharger/Cap Booster with 200s/400s
Lo: To tank go with 4 x pdu I/II. For damage 4 x BCU Drone: 10 Warriors/5 Valkyries
To save grid go for the dual 150s as they only use 80 grid. This frees up grid for other items, and they are only really needed to agro the rats since your missiles are the main waepons.
If you want better tanking drop the med extender and fit another hardner, Kinetic or Thermal. Also drop the guns altogether and fit 2 x Med nos to help with your cap.
I prefer to use the target painter since the missile change as this helps increase the damage the missiles do.
There are so many different setups that you can try and you'll just have to try what your skills will allow for.
If you want good cap recharge then at some point get Energy Systems Operations to lvl 5, and also get the new Shield Compensation skill. Any little place where you can save cap will improve your durability and help you in battle.
I think the ultimate tank in a Ferox would be something like this:
High: 5 x Arbalest/Tech II + 2 Med Nos II Med: Med Booster II, Shield Boost Amp, EM, Thermal, L/M Extender II Lo: 4 x PDU II
You will be very slow in that setup, but you will last a long time if you have all the right skills at lvl 4 or higher.
Hope this helps (message me in game for more ideas if you like )

Here's my current Ferox setup:
5 Heavy Launchers (2em and 3 expl) 2 Medium Beams (microwave)
2 T2 Large Shield Extenders 3 50% Active Hardeners (em, thermal, kinetic)
2 T2 PDU's 2 Shield Power Relays
3 Drones (that's all I can control)
This gives me about 9k shields, with a passive recharge of 50hp/s. With Battlecruiser lvl4 and the hardeners running the weakest resistance is EM at 60%.
Personally I don't change hardeners or missile type between missions.
I don't have any problems with level 3 missions.

3 hardners f90 large shield extendor large tech 2 shield booster
5 pdu II's
Gives me almost 7k shield with very good resists.
I can drop the extendor and fit tech II hardners and put an amp, but i find that the the lower shield and highejr % are worse at tanking for missions.

Let me answer your questions.
You missunderstood the description of the Shield Power Relay. It has the same powergridboost like the Reactor Control Unit I. So its not a -10% decrease of your PG, but a +10% increase of your powergrid. So you will end up with 1692 PG.
For your concearning about your cap. You dont need cap, only for your 2x 250mm II. With my skills, i have 2k cap and a recharge rate of 1327 sec. Sounds crazy it is ;)
But the only 2 modules, the 250mm II, that will consume your capp will only use 2,5 cap/s, while you will recharger more than 3 cap/s. This was calculated with the formula:
"mcp = (mc * 0.63) / (ct / 5)
mcp = max cap recharge per s mc = max capacitor and ct = recharge time"
which i wrote down from a post somewhere. Its pretty accurate from my expirience.
Your cap will never ran out. you will be able to shoot and tank nonstop. Only if someone would start drain your cap, you would have to stop shooting with 2x250mm II wich arent your mainweapons ;) _________________________ WANTED Dead or Alive
