After reading CCP Zulu's response, I'm just gobsmacked.
Thousands of people stating quite clearly they hate this for its uselessness, their obvious deception, and the wretched direction this points to, not to mention thousand of players protesting in game (ya know, that whole "what players are doing" thing)...and they are happy they sold 52 monocles? Out of hundreds of thousands of players, 52 dweebs paid over a billion in ISK for a completely useless vanity item that will go completely unused and likely unseen by 99.95% of the player community...and they are happy? That's just mind boggling denial on an epic scale.
CQ is wholly useless. It fails to deliver Anything of value, and what's more is that it detracts and detracts from my game experience.
I haven't seen anything this stupid since NGE/CU from SWG. That's saying quite alot.
It pains me greatly to say this: With all the decisions they've made, on top of making the game literally inaccessible to me due to hardware constraints, I've lost all confidence in CCP and cannot see every paying them another dime of my money. In all the years I've been playing MMO's, I've only claimed that about a single company, Sony Online Entertainment. I never in a million years thought I'd ever be saying it about CCP.
I can't say I'm done with them entirely. I can say that based on my experience, their practices and overall direction are not drawing me to them or their game. It's one thing to complain or dislike a single feature or even a few changes with any content/expansion...it is another entirely when the company as a whole shows that they have not only lost sight of what has paid their salaries for the last decade, but insist that they've done the right thing when it is as clear as an un-muddied lake they just dropped a loaf in the punch bowl.
What most players do not realize or accept even when informed is that CCP doesn't have to use player feedback. It's not our game, it's theirs. That's what sucks the most about this...CCP has been one of the few companies that tell their customers that they are a part of the development and decision making process. Other companies have the sack to state otherwise outright. In that, I see a great deal of dishonesty.
I find what they've done and plan to do completely disgraceful, distasteful, dishonest, and ultimately completely unnecessary. As I said before, I have but one option which they really didn't give a choice in (because I literally can't play it anymore on my laptop) and that's to not pay them any more of my money.
Nitpicking and griping about the details, slinging e-turds or giving commentary about what they've done and will do isn't going to solve anything. They've made it abundantly clear that they believe they are going in the right direction. 52 items sold to four hundred something thousand players is all the proof they need. So you go right on ahead, CCP, you go with yo bad self.
There really isn't much more I can say about this whole topic except this: They just lost a customer. They just lost 15 bucks a month. Additionally, they've lost the body of players and the money they pay when they elect to play their game because the guild decides to go there. If they don't care, will simply cannot continue to care and pay them.
You may be happy with your decisions, but we're not. My guild and I have spoken by cancelling our subscriptions.
CCP has Officially jumped the shark.
Thanks for all the fish and monocles.

Edited by: Nicolo da''Vicenza on 25/06/2011 05:09:34 So on opening day after years of buildup from a loyal playerbase around a quarter million, you only got ~$5000 worth of sales? And all it cost was hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars from years of development of the Incarna system? Good trade I guess.
Now, I love EVE. But CCP does not seem to have my enjoyment of the game even on their list of priorities in the near or distant future. So far all I have for 4 years of promises is a solitary confinement simulator and offers for expensive virtual clothing.
Wormholes and Incursions I feel were a step in the right direction, expanding PVE and PVP options for the player base, but there is still so much more to do in that regard (especially PVE).

ive had this greeat idea. instead of making the population of new eden rage by charging the select few that can afford a days wages for an eye piece that doesnt actually do anything other than make your pockets swell a little more.. why dont you put the subscription fee up by .50 c and take a tiny bit of everybodys money, then you can make everyone look blissfully gay with shiney clothes

Edited by: Dan Estrellas Amigo on 25/06/2011 11:45:56 Uh, no. If someone wants to spend $60 for a monocle let him do it, he is free to. It doesn't break my game nor raise everyone's subscription cost.
The cost of the monocle is a non-issue. One week ago you couldn't buy it for $120.
The worth of the monocle, of all non-combat vanity items, is in its rarity. That's the point of a high cost. If you don't want to buy expensive items that don't hurt anyone's game, don't buy them. Just like a week ago.
The cost of the monocle is hilarious, but there is no problem here.

The monocles are bad enough, but now it's ships for AUR, and coming soon Mods for AUR? CCP used to make fun of stuff like this. http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&bid=549
Now, after enabling AUR, you can just click on the ScorpionAnywhere! button and CCP will automatically bill your credit card for the transaction as part of the Customer Experience Process. No hassle, no fuss, instant Scorpion!
As they continue developing AUR 2.0, you will almost assuredly be able to buy T3 BS's Only With AUR!(tm). With the release of AUR 3.0, even poor children from Zimbabwe will be able to afford a 10% bonus on their existing ships for a mere 2 or 3 USD.
Just remember, Only With AUR!(tm). If you don't have the money, or don't want to spend it, you LOSE!

Edited by: Aidan Brooder on 25/06/2011 17:42:30 The whole monocle or shirts-thing doesn't make me worried. The leaked CCP internal note does. As long as items are just vanity items, what do I care? I like Roleplay and I think Walking on stations is a good thing.
Even "ships for real money" has been an option for a long time now. You buy two Plex, you sell them, you buy your faction battleship or whatever.
There are three things that greatly worry me: 1. If I decide I need e.g. a Scorpion now, another player has build it. It doesn't just beam in. Items with an actual game effect that can be bought directly from CCP will ruin the complexity of the economy model.
2. I play a lot of MMOs. I always return to EVE, because the playerbase is refreshingly different, as is the game concept. I know CCP obviously - like all the others - wants to absorb a broader playerbase. Some more RP types will be attracted once Incarna is finished. That is good. I know at least six people who want to give EVE a try now. But why annoy the old players with things like this over-priced shop. You cannot incorporate players who like games like STO, the coming SWTOR, etc. It is just not your piece of the market, CCP. If you transform EVE into a game like STO, e.g., you will lose everything that distinguishes EVE and makes it a mature game.
3. I have the feeling you just hired a lot of marketing-mercenaries and analysts that definitely point you the wrong way, when it comes to EVE. They do not understand the product. Listen to your playerbase, not some guys trained to milk a dead cow. That is, squeeze money out of EVE in short term, forgetting that EVE always survived and was great, because the long term goals were good and aligned with player interest. Because a certain credibility and not going with the latest MMO trends is something that also makes EVE attractive in many players (active and prospective) eyes.
I will not kill my subscription just yet, but if the way you want to lead EVE is to make it a standard boredom questy "buy what you lack in skill" game, I will reconsider in a few months from now. It's the best, because it's different. Take it's uniqueness away = Take attractiveness away.

As for all the 'promises' ( we know what those are worth, right? ) that game changing items won't be for sale for Real Money: does anyone honestly believe that? Every company out there in the F2P market offers game changing, balance shifting items for cash. Short on skill points for that BS you want to fly? Press the 'Instant Battleship Pilot' button and your credit card will be charged instantly. What? You don't have a BS? Step right up to the Ship Shop ( Shop smart, shop Ship Shop ) and you credit card can buy you the ship of your dreams...
Yeah ... as a somewhat veteran of F2P/cash shop games it takes Z E R O stretch of the imagination to see this happening. And we've all seen Hilmars E-mail where he drinks the sweet nectar of success over 52 monocles sales.
And perhaps most interesting about this 'slippery slope': have you at CCP fully looked over the legalities of this 'item bought for real money is stolen/destroyed by another player/person'? Almost every F2P cash shop game ( and most P2P also ) limit real money items to what can not be removed/stolen from the purchaser. In case the term hasn't been mentioned before, it's 'Charge Back'. Most credit card companies will side with the consumer ( who pays them money and affects their company bottom line of all things ) when faced with any complaint, especially when they've paid real money for an item/product and it's now gone.
