As you may have noticed we have had some performance issues on Tranquility lately. To address this we are running at decreased hardware capacity, while we work on this at hardware, software and content levels. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you and we assure you that we are working hard on fixing it as fast as possible.
Please check this thread as often as you can for updates!

I'll have to rephrase Garrett Crowe' question.. Do I understand it correctly that in order to combat lag issues, you just decreased (reduced / lowered / scaled down) your hardware? Is it some new method to bring more fun in game? -- note: it took me more than an hour and 4 (four) relogs yesterday to just pass through Jita. without even docking to a station. just passing through. that's some fun!

So can you explain to me/us why your not replacing lost ships from X-R3 from the CVA/IAC versus TOXIN/UK and friends on saturday night ? The lag was so bad that for 5 minutes i couldn't see a single hostile, yet we were all being picked off one by one, and not able to even warp of to save ourselves.

Its fairly simple. Lag is caused in part by hardware issues. If they reduce the amount of hardware in use, they will reduce one component of the overall lag. Ie, less hardware with lag issues = less lag.
This type of resource management can provoke other solutions. Another route to resolve lag could be to limit the numnber of active clients. Heres an easy formula to understand it :
total system lag = number of people able to play x perceived lag per person.
Reduce the number of people playing, total game lag is reduced accordingly. The whole lag issue could be resolved by taking this solution to its natural conclusion. At some point in time the number of people playing can be reduced to a level which can be accomodated by the amount of hardware used to support them, and the whole lag issue will just vanish.
I would suggest that this could be achieved by allowing characters with names starting a-m to be allowed to use their clients on monday, wednesday and friday. those starting n-z would be allowed to play on tuesday, thursday, and saturday. Sundays would be a free-for-all just to remind everyone why we are doing this.
And no cheating by having multiple accounts. Possibly these should be banned.
That should fixit.

talking about lag and petitions, I had a petition out for lag in gang fight the lag was bad we lost all but 1 ship that was somehow able to warp away. we made petitions for our ships to be reinbursed. 2 corp m8's got there ships back, I got standard no lag, cannot verify your loss was due to server issues. I asked for a senior GM to relook at this petition and they deleted my petition. is that there lag prevention mesures pretend it all ok and brush lag reimbursment petition's under the carpet and delete?

Why do some people get their stuff back and others don't? I too lost a ship, Friday night actually... when it wouldn't dock. I'm out 350m now, thanks. Got the standard 'server logs' response after petitioning.
CCP, you might want to give your subscribers the benefit of the doubt when they lose ships and lag is an obvious issue.

This should be the announcement as you log in...
To all Capsule pilots. Due to a collapse of two massive black holes, bubbles of time space anomalies have been detected throughout the subspace ether. Any capsule pilot encountering these anomalies will experience the effect of being in two states at once. Both in hyper space and in real space. This can be lethal to any pilot in the midst of battle as your ship will be in both states at once and until your mind re-integrates with the ships systems you are completely vulnerable in real space. Avoid large conflicts, and be wary of these anomalies.

How is this hard to understand? They haven't permanently lowered the capability, its a temporary measure so they can have a rolling fix across all the hardware.
Mind you that being said.. eve's as laggy as ever even with the hardware fixing.. tbh I think its more net-code than hardware thats the route of the lag. That and the 30k users online at once.

I thought you were joking until I read this proposal ... This was more or less what some countries did to reduce air pollution in cities (e.g. Athens/Greece in the 80's - they allowed only cars with odd/even numbers on the license plates into the inner city zones depending on the day of week).

Originally by: Garrett Crowe What does decreased hardware capacity do exactly?
Well, if you have intermittently failing hardware, you have two choices. Leave it in to give extra capacity, and deal with it when it goes screwy. Or take it out and run at lower overall capacity, but with more reliability. And if you're not sure exactly which bit is breaking, you rotate bits in and out and figure it out by a process of elimination.
There's also the possibility that it's actually related to the software's ability to properly manage all the hardware in the cluster at once. If something in the cluster admin code is blowing up with too many nodes attached, then removing some of the nodes will help until you get the code sorted.
Yes, decreased hardware reduces the overall capacity of the server. But from the sound of it the issue's they're having have a bigger impact than the removal of the hardware. To use a car analogy, strapping a giant truck engine to a Yugo gives you lots more power, but you won't be going anywhere fast if the weight of the engine breaks your suspension. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

Lol thats a verry short turn of looking imo,btw i've got 2 chars i pay for both of them so i do not see that as cheating ? perhaps you could tell me how that is cheating ...
Also the a-x solution is a funny 1 ,i doubt ccp will go to such actions if they will i quit ,and no i'm not giving my stuff away i will trash it all

I lost a ship the other day when the lag was so bad you could not even see the enemy ships nor control any modules. And the response to the petition was server logs show no lag. That's some customer service for you huh? Just making it up as we go.
I really see no rhyme nor reason why some peeps get their ships back and others don't in the exact same situation.
Obviously there is lag and obviously it is server or software related - either way it is not the customers fault yet we have to lose hundreds of millions. So when it is well known by ccp that there is lag then ship reimbursement should be a matter of course and not the typical nonsense.
And I am trying not to coment on the abusrdity of reducing the number of servers to address slow performance. Like f&%*ing for virginity or fighting for peace. Oxymoron.

As a new member, i have little to add that has not already been covered NUMEROUS times, except to say that already I have encountered several players on trial accounts that instead of becoming a member, they simply change to a new trial account when thier 14 days has expired.... Perhaps it might be possible to limit trial accounts to 1 expired trial account per ip address per every 6 months. thus allowing for people to examine eve, and if they decide not to become a member, allowing them the opportunity to rexamine there decision again in 6 months.

START a 2nd SHARD !!!
Please tell you will someday give up this 'One Sacred Server' non-sence and open another shard every 2-3 years.
Besides - One Size does NOT Fit All !
Another shard or two with slightly more or less PvP would boost your revenues and EVE Online would still probably hold the world's record in any one shard.
Example: eBay was built on junk auctions, but they enjoyed further growth by allowing ''Buy it Now'' pricing, ''Power Sellers'', etc.
Empire Lag is not the only reason many players quit EVE, the idea that so many other players are 3-4 years ahead in skill points ...
I'll stop now before it's all just ranting, somebody Eve-mail me in game if there is a petition or thread just to beat on this ''One Shard'' issue. It's nuts to me.
by the god on Amarr, let 5 years be enough, START a 2nd SHARD !!!

No, No! The best idea to reduce lag is to encourage more action in the NEW REGIONS.
All you have to do is to insert a bunch of STATIONS with REALISTIC PLEASURE HUBS, exotic dancers, and real holo reels!

Edited by: Katana Seiko on 14/05/2007 22:18:16 Umm... I guess CCP should put the next content update on ice, next to the whisky and the fish... And when the Hardware and Software is good enough to show no problems at all anymore, you take the next step. I guess bringing two content updates without the necessary repair measurements in between bugged it up...
Umm... Otherwise... Add stations interiors, add a nice view somewhere (exotic dancers?), have some minigames (casino, paid in ISK with some chance to win something?) in them... should reduce the lag outdoors a little... From what I've read you have the station interior ready... I think I'm okay if it's not THAT detailed and THAT much content in them yet... That would give you some time to work on the problems... --- The future begins now - in EVE we live it, in real life we create it!

Maybe that's how long the connection has been bad for. I haven't heard a lot on it but the issue does keep popping up in the forums.
At any rate it's wrong to blame Tranquility performance for this cause of lag.

Edited by: Thargat on 15/05/2007 00:09:48 I rarely have LAG issues. I play on several different rigs, a crappy laptop on cell-phone dialup while I'm at work (alot of travelling). A 100/100 optic with a couple of good puters when I'm at home (weekends). Running EvE with alot of other programs (especially anti virus) does clog up things a bit, when I'm alt tabbing while in Jita for example. Running the game in fullscreen, with smart overview settings and keeping the number of chat channels to a minimum has almost always worked fine for me (doesn't matter if I'm at home or out travelling). People tend to whine alot about lag but as far as I've seen most lag issues are at densly populated systems with lots of (I assume) database access going on and when there's a glitch in the system (like last week when things got a bit messy and I had a hard time logging on).
The only TRUE lag that I've (personally) encountered so far (wich isn't client lag due crappy Python UI code, wich as previously stated can be countered by minimizing the overview use) has been on the SiSi server.
Set up your client smart, and try loading minimal overview and graphic settings and the lag will be minimal (I've played this game on so many different puters and connections and it allways works). I'm sick and tired of all the peepz complaining about lag instead of doing something about it. Don't like the game? Don't play it. Like the game? Then be positive in your criticism.

5 months in game thus far said I'd give it 6 as I have paid that much....but there should be some solutions that could be quickly implemented to remedy issues players are having...my losses aren't uber substantial but they are having an effect.

Hell Yeah get rid of them all. they are Taking up too many resources and the paying customers are paying the price . CCP thats not right, cancell the trials and allow us paying customers to use that bandwidth, or whichever term you want to give it. if reducing the number of players will free up some resources then reduce thier numbers and let us blow each other up !

i have a most irritating problem with my hud not displaying shield and cap correctly. they show full all of the time. this makes it very hard to know the proper time to activate cap boosters and shield boosters and even armor boosters. it makes it so hard that during combat with more than 1 ship it is impossible to keep track of the enemy and your own ship. i recently lost 2 ships to this problem so i have quit playing eve because i simply cannot feel safe/in control of my ship with this problem. of course the gm's are giving me the run around with generic answers and i bet a million dollars gm's never look at any logs or anything like that. i now find out (after they blamed this problem on my client even though i have changed routers, upgraded my internet connection, reinstalled my client, reformatted and reinstalled my os and client, cleared cache folder, etc, etc,) they are admitting they have a server side performance issue. gm's ..please stop the run around and give back the ships and start over after they fix the SERVER side issues.

amen to that, i'm kind of sick of these people complaining about things not when its a problem but when CCP is rectifing the problem. the reason why they are going minimal is a percaution. if your having problems with your car, and your driving it to the mechanic... you don't beat on it all the way there do you? (i would hope not) now when the mechanic gets there, and he thinks there may be something wrong with the engine, he dosn't rip everything out including stearing wheel to fix it? the point i am trying to make is that to properly diagnose the situation, and resolve it it must follow certen steps to reslove it. this may include using minimal resources to operate. (eve has grown since release/beta) i don't think they expected for it to grow as well as it had, i think they are happy about it, however. to fix this, they need to get there servers so there not being over-loaded. as it is difficult to diagnose a problem with your car's engine, when your in the trunk. this may not at all make sense to some people. as it has a complicated apeal. (although if your reading this, you most likely play eve, and if you play eve, than you have been confused in the past and still may be to this day.)
anyways, if the few left of you grimpers think you can do better, than go and do it. than you can go fix your games problems on your own. that way when it blows up on you, the only one you can blame is you. don't tell the mechanic how to fix your car. don't tell CCP how to fix eve.
and just so you nubs know, CCP has always fixed these issues with haste. unlike some other company's running an MMO. (there names won't be disclosed as i don't want to turn this into a slaughter.) if they were like these other company's they would take eve down completly, while they resolve the issue. and than let the few, the proud, and band of brothers to still log in to help with the diagnosis of the issue at hand.
Thank you! RocK On CCP.

You have a seperate issue recon. Your system bios clock, windows system time, and eve time are not synced up.
To fix it, get an external time source, a watch will do nicely. Boot your machine, log into eve, quickly sync the watch to whatever eve time says. Reboot the machine, get into your system bios, usually f1 on most machines, sync the bios system clock to the watch, save/exit, reboot. When windoze loads, sync windoze system time to the watch.
Now it should all be a happy thang. For whatever reason with eve, the codies have the game somehow reading/referencing the bios clock for the GUI timings for all things like cap/sheilds etc. My experiance with this would be anything with a timer, eve time, sheilds, refining arrays, anchoring/unanchoring timers, anything like that, would accelorate/run fast the longer i stayed logged on. If your bios clock is off from eve and windows, you get the problem you have, as well as a few others.
Hope this helps.

ironically enough, Eve and X3: Reunion 2.0 are the only games that have been running beautifully since i built this new machine and installed Vista.
i haven't put it to the blob test yet, but all the empire systems i've flown through (gotten close to jita) i haven't even seen lag (which leads me to believe what i perceived as lag before was video lag).
130 FPS, Fraps running with vista and an 8800 pushing.. i haven't loved Eve more! i know many others may be experiencing otherwise, just figured an optimistic response would be refreshing..

Take an hour to completely kill all drones abandoned to float helplessly in space. Also, please reconsider the giant secure can anchoring masses in 0.5 - 0.7 asteroid belts -there are more cans than roids most of the time.
Also... reconsider the "suicide stealth bomber" Use of Gang Warp by fleets only results in a huge number of ships all ending up in a 15-20km area.

Well firstly the lag they are referring to has nothing to do with your PC. It is network lag and and lag on their servers. Jita is fine with so many servers holding up that node. The problem arises when you have 2 fleets fighting in a smaller node ie most of 0.0 When 5 seconds lag can mean your side losing 100 Battleships or not. Imagine your fleet warping into a battle and have a enemy titan uncloak that extra 5 seconds could be enough to warp your fleet out. Most of the time the lag is closer to 39 seconds +
Although even having a mere 5 people in system i have experienced weird behaviour with half the people dropping out or taking a minute to initate warp.

Yes, this is the first 3D MMORPG I've seen that runs well on vista. All you complaining about lag and saying get rid of trial accounts, stop it. At least until you do your part and clean up all the litter and tin cans everywhere which has a MUCH BIGGER EFFECT. I joined because of the trial system. Until it was introduced, I steered clear. The subscription is kinda pricy, but after a taste, I rather think worth it. The GM's are more than helpful. A second server sounds like a good idea. It would certainly help.
Perhaps a "Trial account" server with only access to high sec, and good ole Tranquility for the paying players? Just a thought.

One possible solution would be for CCP to implement a robust AFK policy. 10 minutes inactivity and you get logged out.
Anyway is it not more annoying to find that of the 30 odd people in your Alliance that you are the only one actually online.

Given that we are subscribers to eve, and that we pay a monthly rate for the servers to be up and running, any idea that limits our play time is a bad idea. I refuse to pay for a game that has bad servers, bad connections, or limitations on playability. Given, you could reduce the amount we pay, but that doesn't solve any problem. They need bigger information lines, bigger equipment, and better connections. I'm not trying to be harsh, but frankly I am paying for this to be stable.
If I wanted to lag out in the middle of a huge battle, I'd play diablo 2 on bnet. If I wanted to waste my money on bad servers, I'd pay for some clan's server on dod. Since I don't see either of these happening, I suggest you all stop whining and wait for the rep's response to this problem.

about lag :
the servers can handle 50k - 100k concurrent users easy, the eye of the needle is the database and it's transaction model. why do you think are big companies using commercial databasesoftware such as oracle? they are able to handle large DB's and large numbers of transaction. the redo-log model is compleately different from the SQLserver.(only one sample).
Reducing lag can take part in serveral steps. the most annoying thing is the market. open it take ages, because (i think) there will be send an "select * from ..' to get the data. make a performance analyse and u see, where u have to put an index on or where an index is missing. but remember -- too much indexes will slow down the performance! when i buy/sell something, why do you have to reread and refresh all the data and display it ???? it will be enough to refresh the row from the item I bought, not the WHOLE table !! any other wouldn't see the change until he refreshed the view of his market table. when I sell something, the same procedure is handled. insert a 'Refresh-button' in the market window, and the player himself can decide whether he want a refresh or not.
cans in high sec --- i think, there's no need for telling u more in karmokor there are anchored cans older than my ingame lifetime
there have to be lots of things to do --- don't talk about, do it !!
fly save ^^

Empyre wins the thread. Ever since they started the Vista optimization w/ the Dragon code branch, the rest of us have been suffering. Between the yarrrrrrdware upgrade and Dragon the game would run like a dream. 650+ in Jita with ZERO lag. Delicious. Then the vast improvements in Dragon ****ed it all up.

Originally by: Fixit Its fairly simple.

I personally have not had any real lag issues and im located in the southern corner of the land "down under"
My ping to the server sits normally around the 450-600 mark.. and i work the Tash Merk area a lot with the odd trip to lower sec space (.3-.2) and since returning after a year break i have not experianced server lag.. This maybe due to the number of player online while i am. (Normally anout the 12-18K mark).. Other playeer inmy corp have experiance some lag issues..expecially in early eveing (US time)... when a large amount of players are logging in for a few hours.
Another thing that makes me mad is the amount of ancored cans i find in High sec areas... These cans take up RAM on the servers cousing some LAG.. the worse i have had is about 15 sec's worth...

Well may be this explains why my cloaked ship was destroyed the otherday. it was showing as cloaked on my screen but was aparently in full view of the guys shooting at it.
When I petitioned it I was simply told by the dev "We will not replace your ship" I sent a second mesage saying I was not worried about the ship loss but I wanted to know if my cloaking devices could be relied upon. I have not recived a rely to that as yet.
BTW a lot of old problems have resurficed such as the over view constantly needing refreshing.
if eve was a box of eggs I would return them to the shop because half of them are broken. Sort it out CCP.

I can't help but wonder what all those cans do to node performance. On the one hand, it's got to be a small truckload of memory... on the other hand they're largely static. What would happen if they could only be anchored for 24 hours instead of permanently? Even if only in empire?

Some ideas could be some modifications in interface - why is needed to load all these in market...we can select e.g. only skills ..and only skills can be loaded from server . Of course the idea for this game isn't new - see Freelancer where i am going back ...too much lag in this game ...choppy in fight , bad controls of ships, interface not too handy , missions level not specified...and so on...mmm but was a nice experience that trial...too bad-just a lag and wait experience .

Hello Readers, First and foremost, this message is intended to those who are feeling that eve dev group and ccp overall arent addressing the lag issue
" Silence You Insolent Swines, Bow Down to the ALLMIGHTY CCP CORP , EVE { Tranquilty GODS' } "
Bear in mind Gods do make mistakes thats why we are here ! now about this lag issue let them do what they are good at. If you guys know so much on how to resolve lag issues then shouldnt u be working at ccp ? Exactly !
Quit being upset ! Say thank you eve gms' and tell them that they are doing an amazing job .
Personally I started off as a trial member and now Iam paid and so did most of you guys as well ( complainers ) no need 2 have mulitple servers ! one is good ! As for load issues I bet ya when you were ( complainers ) were sleeping last night some1 in HQ of CCP was up and fixing this issue and they still are .
Be happy that we are getting on eve , Appreciate the fact that GM's are kind enough to notify us and creating posts like this for updating us .
Most companies dont even do that. They pull down servers for days ! and all they write is
" Sorry Server / Client Unavailable "
Let them do their job. You do your part by playing. Make ISks , Shoot down Noobs , Mine , Provide Escort to fleet , Eat food and drink Quafe' get on red bull to stay up that night where you saw a nice huge chunky iteron IV on autopilot and wolla some 1 got rich that night , and keep a smile on your face not just your avatar.
:) CCP you guys are amazing cant wait for KALI :)

I'm finding that Jita isn't too bad most of the time, but when it gets to like 7-800 people on a Friday and Sunday night the lag can be annoying - not unplayable.
I get the impression that Jita has hardware set aside to keep it running, but for me the bigger problems are the mission hubs -- Saila, Kaunokka, etc. -- which fall to their knees at much smaller volumes. Even 100 or so players in Saila renders it far worse than Jita. Presumably, these system don't have the hardware priority (exclusivity?) that Jita has.
Of course, I appreciate that CCP can't run every system on a dedicated server, but clearly it is possible to handle the larger volumes of players.
Peace Out

Edited by: Thargat on 15/05/2007 18:03:50 CCP does a GREAT job. Can't give them enough cred. Best MMO on the market. I was even planning on sending them a bottle of scotch when Revelations hit the server but I'm waiting for rev 2. ;p
As I mentioned earlier I've played on ALOT of different connections (from 3G cellphone dialup to fiberoptic-cable and about 7 other connection types inbetween), on several different rigs (from 1.6ghz AMD singlecore, singlecore laptops and quadcore puter with 8800gtx, win 2k, XP and Vista) and the only lag that's not possible to fix from my end (with smart client setup and graphics setup) has been in Large fleet engagements (sometimes) and in densly populated systems like Jita (and still decent enough to enjoy the game).
There's ALOT of things that can go wrong with computer software. But since there's plenty of people who seem to be doing fine in this game you might wanna make sure to eliminate any possible errors from your own end before you go blame CCP. Starting with your own coputer (software, OS, hardware and client) then your internal network (routers, modems etc) then moving up to your ISP (IP release times etc, try a different ISP) and THEN go post bug reports to CCP (AFTER eliminating as much issues as possible from your own end). Oh, and after that you can whine.... a bit. ;p If you don't like what I say, just ignore it, or admit I got to you. |

Originally by: JJ McHawker I get the impression that Jita has hardware set aside to keep it running, but for me the bigger problems are the mission hubs -- Saila, Kaunokka, etc.
How many players they can handle in a system depends as much on what those players are doing as whether they have a dedicated node running them. If you jumped one player in at a time, and have them all warp to a safespot in a different grid to everyone else, and then sit there doing nothing, you could probably stack a massive amount of players in one system with minimal lag. Get them all to warp to the same gate, and you're going to kill the node.
The mission hubs tend to generate more load per player due to having to operate the missions. For example, open your map and switch to the "pirate and police ships destroyed last 24 hours". Saila is currently reading 35503, and the systems around it are all in the high 20k's. Kaunokka is at 21154. Jita is at 13908. Which suggests Saila sees approx 2.5 times as many missions as Jita.
To put that into context, that's on average one NPC popped every 2.3 seconds. Given the usual distribution of activity during the day, peak times are likely to be going much faster than that. And that only measures the NPC->wreck loading, those NPC's will be running AI while they're alive, the wrecks will have timers and pop, there will be all the mission scenery appearing and disappearing as well, not to mention the hundreds of deadspace bubbles appearing and disappearing, and having to be enforced on every warp. And of course the load of the player warping into that lot and having to load it all and keep getting updates on loads of items for the duration of the mission.
If we then assume that 700 players in Jita produce the same load as 100 players in Saila, and every player in Saila is running missions, we can say that just 40 players in Jita are running missions. We can then say
660p + 40m = 100m
where p is the load generated by the average non-missioning player in jita, and m is the average load from a missioning player (including all load related to spawning, maintaining, wrecking, despawning etc the mission).
Rearranging that equation gives us:
m = 11p
in other words, one missioning player could be generating 11 times as much load as the average non-missioning Jita player. Given that lots of people are in Jita just to sit in 4-4 and trade stuff, or pass through on autopilot, compared to all the stuff that needs doing for someone to run a mission, this isn't an unreasonable ratio. Especially if you bear in mind that the market is run on a different node to the system. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

A new Shard would be the end of Eve.. Eve¦s advantage is and always will be.. ITS one WORLD!..
Besides i havent felt that mouch lag in the last month time, and i travel a lot from 0.0 to empire.. mabye i am just lucky.. ofcource jita is always laggy but else its running fine here... pvp even isent that laggy..
what i dont understand is why the servers are running windows.. its just dosent make sence to run "high" performance stuff on windows, it WILL always run more stable/faster in a unix/linux system.. even with windows 2003 you can get better performance in a prober linux system.. how about using Gentoo and fully optimate that system to the HW it runs on? It will FLY!! ofcource that gives a problem with MS sql.. but then again you could set up a few ms sql windows 2003 servers and just query them from the linux systems.. oh well i guess u know what you are doing when u chose windows over linux/unix for a server system?
and yes at MY work we ONLY run Windows 2003.. and its a ok system but for high performance i WOULD chose Linux/Unix ANY day!

The only thing that bothers me is that we read about plans to add more interior stuff, give people full-body avatars, what people refer to as "walking about in stations". We have dev time being spent on Eve Chat, which doesn't do anything that assorted TP utilities can't do. And in the meantime, the game has problems like this. Fiddling while Rome burns IMO. Ultimately Eve is a pretty spreadsheet, the more info in it the more info handling issues it'll have. Can't understand the logic which leads to this at all. And CCP must want to expand... But they can just barely handle the universe they have.
I'm sure it's all well meant, but for me getting the game we have to work is more important than developing the next big thing.

Every time I have tried to log back on after I was kicked 15 minutes ago the loading stalls at "Character Selection: Entering game as..." I would ask for a few mins of training time that I've missed since then (a skill just ended) but, its not like I would know the difference since the SP totals in the character sheet havent refreshed in 2 days.

Ok, I just wasted the whole time I get to play on eve today jumping 2 systems through 0.0 after the lag kicked in while i was ratting.
The only blessing is that i had my good tank fitted and that I didn't see anyone else in local. This is because I would have been destroyed at the belt first. Then the first gate i warped to as there were rats there, then also at the next 2 gates as rats were also there.
I could have earned AT LEAST 20mil ISK by ratting tonight. This is completely unacceptable. I wouldn't be as bothered if i was unable to log on due to a max user limit, as i would not have been at risk of losing my ship, as my corp mate did tonight. (oh look rats, oh wait pod, wreck and burning ship with 0 structure and 100% shields)
I think while the hardware has been downscaled, the should put a cap on the max nuber of users, or at least implement a policy of only one account per IP address. I understand this may stop some couples and families from playing together for a while, but this would only be a temporary solution while the hardware is offline, and they could stagger when they log in.
This is completly unfair. I mean, I was in 0.0, with only my corpmate and I in system.
I understand there is a problem with software/hardware. However, just saying there is a problem, there will be lag, is not really aceptable. CCP should implement some kind of plan to reduce the amount of lag perceived. To at least make the game playable.
Sorry for the whine, love the game when i can actually play it, so please fix it soon.

He hasn't got back in yet. He told me what happened over TeamSpeak. He also said Inaro was on a node with a bunch of 0.0 systems, so there might be a big battle going on out there. I don't know if the node info is correct or if there is a battle going on, but he went to go play something else since he couldn't get in. I'd suggest petitioning it.

now i am relatively new in terms of eve play, 4 and 1/2 months, i dont know of its past performance etc. i have a few ideas of my own,
1) have a 7 day policy on jetcans-if they are not used, they are to be deleted, 2) get rid of the STUPID numbers of conccord vessels by high sec jump gates,we all kno there is no need for 20 odd vessels in the systems. 3)delete un-used trial accounts after 2 weeks, 4)get rid of "some" of the useless collidable objects that are there to serve no purpose, 5)vast amounts of sentry guns in high sec space that are there just for show-a few for asthetics is plenty, 6)the vast amounts of ded "trainin complexes" the noobs dont kno about them and dont use them, instead they whine on channels for free isk 7)actually use the cash payed on subs and upgrade your systems on a regular basis 8)cut out a couple of planets and the countless moons that dont have orbitals around them,we get the point, there be planets here and there, dont go too far! 9)maybe introduce time delay ques in high "activity" areas so only 10-15 (x-amount) can enter the system per minute. will decrease lag in systems with over 600 pod pilots!
on a better note, this is a GREAT GAME, and i respect the vast amount of time put into it for us to enjoy, the fellow players support all pod pilots and the amount of help ppl give to younger players is admirable, i salute you all!!! ....... and the most important point of all....
11) pay attention to your subscribers,if they didnt pay for this, you wouldnt have jobs, respect their opinions and ideas, dont ignore them like you have, and you KNOW there are lag issues,u cant even keep the system stable for gaming,so stop preaching from your logs that everything is dandy and replace your paying customers vessels due and admit it is in fact poor management of the servers thats the problem, not hardware issues.

Edited by: Katana Seiko on 15/05/2007 23:50:00 Make secure cans decay over a week or something, let them loose armor over that time and allow remote repairs that way, and if they aren't repaired - let them pop. If you have 10000000 Containers hanging in a belt with 10 roids in it, you defo know what's the reason for the lag! A few of them might be hanging there for years now, with the one that originally left them there gone a long time ago...
CCP once removed a few belts... They forgot to remove the cans tho... Funny to see that the cans are still floating there while the belt is gone...
@100: 1) jetcans die after 1:30h to 2:30h 2) empty systems kinda look more stupid to me... 3) delete un-used trial accounts after 2 weeks - that's an idea to really look into... 4) get rid of "some" of the useless collidable objects - they allready did that... 5) vast amounts of sentry guns in high sec space - you know, they actually fire if you shoot someone close to them! 6)the vast amounts of ded "trainin complexes" the noobs dont kno about them and dont use them - *signed*, one or two of them per system where they allready are is enough... 7) actually use the cash payed on subs and upgrade your systems on a regular basis - you definetely are new here, the updates that CCP did were quite expensive... 8) cut out a couple of planets and the countless moons that dont have orbitals around them - a definete *no!*... be happy with the fact that at least they aren't moving anymore! 9)maybe introduce time delay ques in high "activity" areas so only 10-15 (x-amount) can enter the system per minute. will decrease lag in systems with over 600 pod pilots! - are you insane!? have you ever been on the run with some bad guys on your tail? there were times when there was that traffic control in place, the worst time eve ever had! --- The future begins now - in EVE we live it, in real life we create it!

How about;
after 15-30 mins afk, your ship puts your pod to sleep/you recharge your current clone in system.
bascially, you get logged out of all but the eve char sheet so you can watch your skills training; with options to wake up or to log outl.
if you are attacked in the cooldown time you are awoken.
that would certainly ease the whole server situation, wouldn't you say ? -=-=-=-==-=--=-=-=--=-=--==-=--¼=-==--=-=-=--==-=--=-=-=-=-=-==-=-

Nope. Won't do jack ****. Eve is event driven. Well, it might actually make it worse because you are creating system wide afk events which will be promptly woken up again by the active pilots.

The best way I see, as an network administrator and part time programmer myself, is to rewrite part of the client, and part of the server code that has something to do with warping.
Most warps take anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds, which is sufficient time in most cases to load the "environment" you warp in to, before you get there. During this time the client and the server need to load the environment you are to warp into before you actually arrive. Basically, it'd be a Prefetch routine built into both the client and the server. The server would send the information about the destination, and the client would then load the information during warp, making the travel a bit more seamless.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but that long pause doesn't occur until you actually reach your destination. It goes something like this. 1, warp. 2, wait to come out of warp. 3, long pause as your client receives a large chunk of data that gives out the positions of the blob. 4, start fighting.
After step 3, there isn't much lag. I'm not saying there isn't any at all, but it's much better than having to wait 30 seconds or so for a blob to load and not being able to activate any modules.
Some of the lag is also client related, a big chunk of data, including textures, positions, and the creation of sometimes hundreds of 3D objects can land quite a load on your computer, with that, you can only upgrade your computer, or turn the graphics down a little lower.
On a similar note, those who lag out at blobs are often the same people. I've noticed it usually (not always) happens to people with lower end computers. The problem is, once the computer receives the data, and starts to render the environment, it can become unresponsive for about 10 to 15 seconds, and this is enough time to lose your connection. That's not lag related, that's computer related, not to say that this is always the case, sometimes the server gets too busy, and is trying to send to much information to too many players at the same time, in that case, those with the slowest internet connections will usually get dropped, but that's a lag problem in nature.

Forgive me skimming only pages 1 and 4 but I think we know whats going on here. I lost a ship just after a cosmos mission due to server problems (admitted by a kind GM), even attempted a rescue but friends ship was blown up. I received the ship back which as I see is more than most people though why should I now go out and buy the cosmos (and other expensive) items I earned and lost nearly straight away? Why only partial compensation? I even supplied a screenshot of my wreck and items.
CCP, people are tired of your lack of comittment to complete a job. The fact that you still rely on a daily downtime to resolve time related instability many years into the game is something you expect in the beta testing stages. Maybe the game is still in beta? Nobody told me when signing up or in the many very flashy videos.
I like the car analogy from earlier and I think CCP is lucky there is not registration required for games on launching or signing up new customers for EVE would never be given a roadworthy certificate.
How about this CCP:
1) Compensate your paying customers 100%. 2) Stop introducing more content to an unstable game. 3) Fix it.
Three easy steps to retain your customers.

Already done. That's what causes the little stutters while warping. It may not be a complete prefetch but it certainly does some. However, it's not really the traffic, or lack of, that is the problem for warp-ins ....
Quote: Some of the lag is also client related, a big chunk of data, including textures, positions, and the creation of sometimes hundreds of 3D objects can land quite a load on your computer, with that, you can only upgrade your computer, or turn the graphics down a little lower.

Spot on. I call this "stutter". It's not unresponsive, it's totally frozen. The client is locked up trying to process all the new data. A lot of that processing, as you mentioned, may be the data fetching from the HDD and from main memory to graphics card.
Quote: , not to say that this is always the case, sometimes the server gets too busy, and is trying to send to much information to too many players at the same time, in that case, those with the slowest internet connections will usually get dropped, but that's a lag problem in nature.
The server won't drop a client. The client has to send a disconnect event.
The client can get so messed up on packet loss that it stops being useful.

That is worthy of some testing. Kill the client without logging off. Then use a different account to go have a look at that system. You should still be showing in local.
I'd imagine that will hold until you login again or till DT.

I love the "Maybe the hardware was causing the issues, so that's why they took it offline" argument.
Hmmmm...
1. Performance isn't great, but is sufferable.
2. Hardware gets taken off line, performance is... LACK of performance renders game virtually unplayable.
3. Therefore the hardware taken offline was HELPING performance, rather than hindering it.

Do you have any specific information that they don't have their own nodes? Even with a dedicated node, they're going to grind to a halt at much lower user counts than other dedicated-node systems such as jita.
Originally by: DiaBlo UK I mean, I was in 0.0, with only my corpmate and I in system.
There are going to be lots more systems on your node than just the one you're in (averages out at about 30 given the number of systems and nodes that we know about). It doesn't matter if there's only the two of you in your system, if there's a fleet fight happening in any of those other 29 systems, then the node is going to lag. Which means all 30 systems on that node are going to lag, including your "empty" one.
Originally by: Lenus Daragio Most warps take anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds, which is sufficient time in most cases to load the "environment" you warp in to, before you get there.
This has been stated by the Devs as something they want to do many times. I suspect that it's waiting on the new graphics engine, the majority of the client-side pause is for loading and initial rendering of the graphics assets, and it wouldn't really be sensible to re-tool that into an engine you're going to drop fairly soon anyway, better to use the time to get the new engine out earlier.
Originally by: Berek Bladesong CCP, people are tired of your lack of comittment to complete a job. The fact that you still rely on a daily downtime to resolve time related instability many years into the game is something you expect in the beta testing stages.
The DT would still be needed even if there were zero time-related instability. Lots of database maintenance activities and high-DB world-maintenance activities (e.g. refilling all the roids) are done during DT. Sure, they could be changed to run in the background of the live environment, but that would reduce the performance of the live environment, and lead to undesirable in-game effects such as people getting stuck between roids when the previously-popped belt suddenly reappeared around them.

If the server is expecting a client response and doesn't receive one in a specified time, the server will drop that client, at which point you will emergency warp and disappear in the same way as if you logged off.
If the server relied on a client disconnect message, it would end up with hundreds of zombie connections by the time DT comes around.
However, it is true that in a connection issue situation, the client will not always detect when the server has dropped it - it only seems to realise when it next tries to contact the server and can't. That's why if you go afk for a few hours and come back, it can appear to drop on the first thing you do - it actually dropped at some undetermined time while you were afk, but the client only realised it when you tried to do something. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

Rearranging that equation gives us:
m = 11p
in other words, one missioning player could be generating 11 times as much load as the average non-missioning Jita player. Given that lots of people are in Jita just to sit in 4-4 and trade stuff, or pass through on autopilot, compared to all the stuff that needs doing for someone to run a mission, this isn't an unreasonable ratio. Especially if you bear in mind that the market is run on a different node to the system.
First, a bit of gratitude is in order. I just started eve'ing and i love it. The complexity just grabed me.
Now, we can think and say all we want. As long as we remember what this all is. A computer game, and as such... it's all about the math/economics. There is nothing more to it.
I quote Matthew because i can't say it better myself.
Anyway if i were the CCP i would look at "the numer of playes quitting" compared to "the number of new players signing up". And hold that up against the performance graphs compared to the economics of scaling up what ever part of the setup is giving us problems.
Then it is all a matter of how much ccp wants to earn on us playing versus our satisfaction. And thats just how it is with a great game like this - being played by so many ppl.
This makes me think about programming classes back in the days... Our teacher used to say that we could program our way of any misuse (typos and such)... What i think he _should've_ said was, it is impossible to program our way out of popularity.
So what i'm trying to say is, i think CCP is doing a great job as long as we're still here. It is an upward spiral, they can just keep on tuning and scaling up, for ppl will just keep playing more vigorously and in greater numbers while demanding more content ofcourse.
Thanks for reading this.

What's happened to the sound? It is trembling. I thought smth went wrong with my speakers or even with the sound card but with other programmes the sound works correctly. Only in EVE I have a termbling sound sometimes always sometimes (for a short period of time) it works well.

errrm you say earlier ? i think it would be nice if they fixed this and didn't even think about releasing a new client/engine all thought graphics imp would be awesome if they cant get it right when they have had 4 years+ to develope this engine what good is switching to a new one going to do. don't get me wrong I'm not saying ccp haven't done a good job I'm just saying in my eyes all we will face in a engine upgrade is more glitches and prolly the same ones that seasoned players experienced at the start of the careers

That is worthy of some testing. Kill the client without logging off. Then use a different account to go have a look at that system. You should still be showing in local.
I'd imagine that will hold until you login again or till DT.
If the server is expecting a client response and doesn't receive one in a specified time, the server will drop that client, at which point you will emergency warp and disappear in the same way as if you logged off.
Won't happen. Emergency warps need a trigger. Non-activity from the remote end is not a good trigger in an event system. What might be a trigger is a low-level network connection loss. Dunno, this sort of detail is beyond of my knowledge. Another possible trigger is the server node overloading internally triggering auto warp.
Quote: If the server relied on a client disconnect message, it would end up with hundreds of zombie connections by the time DT comes around.
I'm not talking about the network layer. The disconnect event is game level. And, of course, can be from either end. The server can send it also at DT. The details at the network level are not obvious from observation.
Quote: However, it is true that in a connection issue situation, the client will not always detect when the server has dropped it - it only seems to realise when it next tries to contact the server and can't. That's why if you go afk for a few hours and come back, it can appear to drop on the first thing you do - it actually dropped at some undetermined time while you were afk, but the client only realised it when you tried to do something.
I'd say this goes both ways as neither the client or server are looking for a response to their respective events.

There never used to be a downtime, yet roids still respawned...

CCP probably don't have an unlimited budget and while I have every confidence that they have the right people and ability to look into these lag issues, if the bottom line is lack of horse power and the funds are not there to provide it, your not going to get far.
I've been in the game since sept 2005 and since then lag has always been a major issue and despite new clusters and resources, the userbase just expands to fill it. Unpalatable as it may be to many I would rather have a pop cap imposed on each system to keep it playable, rather than just be stuck in a lag blackhole.

i've had no problems logging in at work, where we have the proverbial fat pipes, but logging in at home (where my connection is a comedy throwback to the dawn of telecommunication) is a nightmare.
That suggests to me that connection speed plays a big part in the problems.
Interestingly, i've also noticed i have more trouble logging in after DT and early evening when everybody's trying to get in. are lower connection speeds are being deprioritised by the login server or something?

Ever been to Jita ?
1 .Undocking do a black screen because of the lag loading all the ships outside station ?
2. Modules taking 10 seconds to activate in a busy mission hub ?
3. Warping into a mission and waiting while the grid loads, then finding your already down to half your armor ?
4. Of course the major one that pops up all the time is jumping into another system to engage an enemy fleet but once your loaded you find your in your pod/in clone station.
5. etc.
The first 3 examples are livable with to an extent, although I've almost lost ships to 2 & 3. Where as 4 is kinda game breaking really and CCP won't even replace your ship in that situation, which is why I avoid it like the plague.

I understand what you are saying, but I'd rather be stuck in the black hole of lag then be 155th in line for jump-in to a system with 6 gates.
Also. DDoS comes to mind.

I accept your point of view (if that's how you want to play) but don't necessarily agree with it. The issues you mention could be worked around. For example, sovereignty could play a part:
Popcap limit of 100 defenders having sovereign rights, plus 100 of a declared alliance/corp, plus a handfull of independants. These allocations could be dymanic to an extent but overall the popcap limits the system to what the hardware is capable of.

my eve experience today...
downtime finishes at 12, so i start trying to log in. it's 2:45 before my connection is finally accepted.
i decide to do a couple of missions to kill time. warp in... lag... unlag deep into armour... try to warp out... in a pod.
close eve. watch a dvd.
i'm not fussed about the Hurricane and i'm not overly bothered to lose 3 hours of play time, but it's a bit crap that the game is completely unplayable recently. hurry up and fix whatever it is you broke!

Okay.
The way I see it is like this:
People complain about lag because it interferes with their gameplay - their enjoyment of EVE experience - what we are all here for.
People will complain about population cap per system/constellation/region because it will interfere with their gameplay, just in a different way.
Both of these are undesirable meta game-mechanics in a sense that these are not really part of the game world but are there regardless due to the situation outside of it [game world].

I just don't get it. I read about people having a hard time logging in. People being lagged when running missions and being thrown out from the server. I've NEVER experienced that kind of problems, atleast not at the scale that some claim. Once or twice a month I get a disconnect or get really bad lag (and I can't honestly say that it's been CCPs fault with any degree of certanty). I play EvE for 4 to 8 hours every day on mixed times (2 hours before DT and 4 to 6 hrs at EvE evening time) with several characters from the North, through Jita down to deep 0.0 in the south. I go roaming 40-60 jumps about once a week and I participate in fleetbattles and smaller skirmishes and very rarely have I been in any serious LAG (last occation was when fighting PA in Empire and then it got a bit "slidshow" -ish.
Do some serious tests (log on SiSi and see if you have the same problems there) and THEN come back and whine.

Lots. It's lag free. At least so close to it it don't matter.
Quote: 1 .Undocking do a black screen because of the lag loading all the ships outside station ?
I think that might be the client losing the plot. Prolly via packet loss. Normal time is only a few seconds. I relog if it goes blank for more than about 20 seconds.
Quote: 2. Modules taking 10 seconds to activate in a busy mission hub ?
Agreed, that is lag.
Quote: 3. Warping into a mission and waiting while the grid loads, then finding your already down to half your armor ?
That's not lag. That's stutter. Your client is frozen struggling with the all the input from the server.
Quote: 4. Of course the major one that pops up all the time is jumping into another system to engage an enemy fleet but once your loaded you find your in your pod/in clone station.
Again, stutter. You display is frozen. If this was lag then everyone would be in the same boat waiting for the server.
Hmmm, there is one more possibility. You have a connection problem. This can cause lag and packet loss. And it'll affect you but no others. This of course is not a problem with the cluster either.

One extremely simple thing that could to vastly increase enjoyability be done is the option to drastically decrease texture quality and a much lower resolution setting! In fact, an option to remove the images of ships from display altogether would help many people out a LOT, especially with larger and larger numbers being seen in major, decisive combat. Please, please, please implement this CCP!

Another possible trigger is the server node overloading internally triggering auto warp.
I'm not talking about non-activity in an event system, obviously auto-warping you if you're sitting there doing nothing is silly. What I'm talking about is when the server sends the client something, expects a response, and doesn't get one. Even if the event being sent does not require a game-related response, the server will still be expecting an ACK response from the client for the packet of data that's been sent. In that situation, the server has no choice but to assume that it either did not receive the client's disconnect packet, or that the client has lost connection in a way that did not generate that packet. At which point it makes perfect sense for the server to close the connection and trigger the on_disconnect events (e.g. emergency warping).
Originally by: Solbright alt I'd say this goes both ways as neither the client or server are looking for a response to their respective events.
As I've said above, they may not require a game-related response to their events, but they will always require a network-related response to acknowledge the receipt of the packet. If those network-related responses are not being received, then there is no point trying to maintain game-level events over the obviously broken network pipe.
The reason the client and server behave differently when the connection breaks is because of how they behave. The client only sends events to the server when you do something with the client that requires it. If you've left the client afk not doing anything, it's not going to be generating any events. If it's not generating any events, it has no way of knowing if receiving no events is due to none happening or the connection being down, so stays open until it generates an event that is not responded to.
The server is much more proactive in sending out events to the client. If you're sitting in space it will send you position/velocity etc updates very regularly. Even if you're sitting in station afk, anyone entering or leaving local, the station guest list, any other chat updates, wallet/evemail flashes etc, will all generate an event to be sent to the client. This means that you are very unlikely to go any significant length of time without the server trying to send your client some sort of event. And if the server disconnects you due to no response, there's not much point it trying to send a disconnection event when it's disconnecting you on the assumption your connection has died anyway.
Technically you are right, both the client and server have the potential to not spot a connection loss immediately. But because the server sends events so much more often, the server is likely to spot the lack of response before the client does, especially an afk client, which is why you'll end up with zombie behaviour at the client end much more than on the server end.
e.g. 16:59:00 You go afk at a safespot 17:00:00 Internet burps and you lose connection 17:01:00 Someone jumps into the system, server sends you update to local list. 17:01:10 Server re-sends event due to lack of packet ack from client 17:01:30 Server assumes connection loss as no ack from client. Server drops connection and autowarps. Client still shows as online as has not received anything to suggest otherwise. 17:30:00 You come back from being afk and try to warp somewhere 17:30:10 Client has not received ack for the event packet, so resends 17:30:30 Client has not received any ack from server, so assumes connection loss and closes. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

Besides, how on earth would logging into sisi tell you anything about lag on tranq when it's blatantly a capacity issue?

I can't believe it has to be said again, but really the issue isn't really capacity. It's certainly not simply capacity anyway. Concentrated capacity can affect in game lag in particular areas, because Eve is basically fractured into regional servers, if you will. However, general capacity should not affect overall lag everywhere, nor should it affect your ability to log on under normal circumstances. Theoretically Eve should be able to hold many, many more players without simple capacity being a major issue. Personally, I rarely, if ever have connection problems and I know many, many people can vouch to this. If the issue were really simple capacity then EVERYONE would be affected.

Serious testing means that you should eliminate as many sources of error as possible before deciding it's all server related. It won't be easy and it won't be done in no time (more like a few days of tinkering and testing)but it'll be worth it I promise. Maybe not for you directly (it might all be hopeless for some players out there) but by eliminating every source of error from your own and your ISPs end (to a reasonable level) and the bug reporting the rest (with specs) your doing the community a favor. And since alot of people seem to be playing with minimal problems then "hey" maybe it isn't ALL CCPs fault that your experiencing problems.

Were you talking to me? Pardon me then, as I thought you were referring to problems with connecting in general, not just the past day or so. I definitely wouldn't know anything about the reduced hardware capacity effects, and I'm thinking I misread your comment.

Would cool to get confirmation on how the low level network interacts here. Ie: Does it really use ACKs?
You're prolly right though, it sounds like a worth while error checking function.

I'm still not having any problems, so I guess that it probably isn't a "capacity" issue. See, we can go on like this for weeks and still come to no better conclusion.
All I'm saying is that people with problems should try to help CCP fix them instead of whining (and the correct way to go is to establish how much of the "problem" that's actually CCPs servers). The suggestion wasn't directed towards you in person either since this is an open forum and there's no need to get all "worked up" over the matter either.

I reactivated both of my accounts a little while ago. I'm currently going on about 30 minutes of "checking status". What gives? I'm using the same comp, cable modem, and router I was using when I put the accounts down while I was into another game. Having connection issues is one thing, but not having any access at all to the service i'm paying for (x2 mind you) is another. Hopefully it gets fixed soon, or i'm going to have to ask my CC company for a reversal of the charges.

Getting booted out every 5 mins. Ship won't jump and just hangs at the gate.

Logging in... Authenticating.... (for over 15 minutes)
Server: Tranquility Status: OK
Disconnected....
Server: Tranquility Status: Checking.... (going on 20 minutes now)
Quote: To address this we are running at decreased hardware capacity, while we work on this at hardware, software and content levels.
What exactly does that mean? What is it doing exactly that should be helping me to connect? Because whatever it is, it isn't doing it. This is the weekend now, and I was really looking forward to getting back into the game. I'm on a 5mb cable connection, and can connect to any of my other games without issue. The OP said to check back here for updates on the problem, but there hasn't been an update since the OP 4 days ago.
I realise that problems may arise, but you'd think that after 4 days there'd be at least "some" headway, and an update stipulating the same.

I suspect you're living with the USA-London connection problem. Which is nothing to do with Tranquility.
That said, CCP's ISP has given notice of outages for maintenance this weekend, I think, so you're in luck for an early fix maybe.

i'm uk based, my isp is european, a trace route dosen't leave europe and maintainins a good throughput all the way. my packets aren't even looking at the atlantic pipe. the slowest part of the whole process is my local exchange which is working as well as it ever has.
as much as you want me trying to connect on a 28.8k modem, or BT having replaced a load of cable with strawberry laces, or i'm actually shouting at a cashpoint machine rather than actually using a computer at all, Eve Online isn't working properly.

Its very strange. I have pingplotter running with an average round trip rate of 85ms. 12 hops from me to Tranquility. Yet all I get is:
Server: Tranquility Checking Status....
The problem is definitely NOT on my end. I'm just waiting for pingplotter to finish the requested 60 cycles so I can send the results to CCP. Although I have no idea what good its going to do. Like yourself, i've never had any connection issues at all. It just royally sucks that after a few months away, I have to come back to CCP having all these problems. I was going to call the CC company on Monday, but i'll give them the benefit of the doubt and wait until after Tuesday's extended downtime. Hopefully, they can get it resolved. If it doesn't work out, i'll just get the charges reversed and call it quits with Eve. Which would be a shame really, i've always enjoyed the game immensely.

Can anyone from CCP confirm the router replacement at L3 this morning? I've exhausted every available avenue on my end, and if tomorrows extended downtime has no effect, i'll have no choice but to contact my CC company for a reversal of both charges to my card, as i've not been able to play since reactivating my 2 accounts.

Just for giggles, I reinstalled EveMon. This is what happened:
Current EVE Time: 5/22/2007 22:26 // Tranquility Server Online (23372 Pilots)
I can also get the profiles of each of my characters on both of my accounts. Being a complete network dummy, it just strikes me as odd that I can connect to TQ through EveMon, but not through the client. Any offerings of assistance would be greatly appreciated at this point. I'd REALLY like to get back into the game. Many thanks in advance to anyone who might be able to help

It's acting like it's either being blocked or the client program is busted.
If you have access to another PC you could start by trying from there. Or reinstall Eve from another freshly downloaded copy of the installer. Another approach might be to take your PC to another place with a different internet connection. I'm sure you can think of other alternatives also.

At this point, I think that CCP needs to consider reimbursing each acct for the time that they are incapable of playing or logging in. Last time that the lag statement was issued on the login screen, I was incapable of doing more than sitting in station because I would get kicked while ratting and then come back in 3/4 through my armor and have to pray that I could warp out. It took me 15 minutes to get back to the station, clicking once and waiting for a response for at least 5 minutes. This makes it unbearable and unrealistic to play EVE. Also, my skill finished and I could not log in for over 8 hours, trying repeatedly over and over and over. I petitioned but it's not covered because there's no bug. But I say there IS a bug, a bug the CCP is well aware of: huge lag! It matters not the CAUSE of the lag, it only matters that the CCP has already acknowledged it TWICE, and in so doing, it is then their problem to mollify their loyal customers. If it is really the ISP's problem, I would daresay it's time to get another ISP. "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me." Having people pay for even one acct, let alone multiple ones, leaves a very sour taste in their mouth when 1) these issues were not solved the first time they became a problem that destroyed the gaming experience for EVERYONE in the Eveverse, and 2) when the results of the lag issues that are well documented are not handled by the CCP in a way that is conducive to a positive gaming experience and mollification of its long-time players.
I'm sorry, but this huge instability isn't supposed to happen when we're paying 15$ a month per acct and expect to be able to play (within reason) when we want to! Unbearable and unacceptablce!!!

Only one bad thing has come of this seen from my point of view :
People loose ships & items due to the lag, yet when petitioning the lag issue for a possible reimbursement, the answer is simply "Server logs show no error".
Well they wouldn't, given that the logs record what happens.
But looking at a ship, that has according to the messages you have recieved already been destroyed, because you have had no way to return to ship the 6 km to the jumpgate, then when trying frantically to at least get your POD out, you stare at the same recently deceased ship image, and no jump is possible, for minutes on end, even though distance to gate is less than 200 meters...
Lag is causing grief in abundance. So, Please get it fixed and stop stating : "We hope you quickly recover from your recent loss...." because in the end, it will be your loss, for loosing a large portion of players, due to repeatedly refusing to acknowledge that the lag issue is causing people to loose a lot of their assets in this game, and by that, the joy in playing it.

I'm having the same problem and it is Jita related, I have now been trying to get in for 90 minutes. Considering this is the first online game I pay monthly to play, I'm starting to consider whether I made the right choice.
Can't complain if I don't pay but as I do then I expect a certain level of service and at the moment, that is not being fulfilled.
If there is a known problem in Jita, why doesn't something get done about it? Even restricting the amount of ships in the area if needed while the necessary things are sorted.

may i ask one thing... what the heck did you code in or add with bloodlines that so totally borked server performance? right after the new hardware before bloodlines it was a dream. then suddenly jump queues appeared, you added "load balancing". performance went downhill. is it so hard to examine what you added in the dragon code branch that ****s up everything?
are you ever able to get server performance stable and playable? there are still major lag issues and database fubars frequently. are you sure you want to release "heat" and other stuff? surely, content creators can contribute something to server performance as well even if they are not programmers, database experts or QA people. --

Hear this one...
I can fly through Saila (or whatever its called) and Jita and not lag only when I'm going stargate to stargate. When I want to go to a station in Jita then I will lag and undocking is even worse than docking.
I found no lag in 0.0 when I was in 0.0 unless we're dealing with large numbers of ships (fleet stuff) and that seemed to be somewhat client side as it seems that if you're zoomed in 100% you will receive plenty of FPS drop and if you zoom out this will help and that doesn't mean that there isn't lag from the connection part of the issues.
I don't understand WHY 500-700 people (genuinely 500-700 people? or are half of them alts of alts of alts of alts and mains of alts of alts of alts... etc the list goes on). Why can't anybody spread out? The galaxy is so huge go somewhere, make a new home! Jita isn't the ONLY place to create a major trade hub as it seems to have everything why not have a major trade hub in every empire sovereignty rather than JUST Jita?
I think part of the lag is contributed to the fact hundreds are just station sitting and driving missiles into people in front of stations (that too contributes to lag) there should be a zone around the stations extending say 10-30km that you cannot target another ship or cause any harm. Getting the combat away from the stations would help the lag as well.
Lag is caused by data flow between other clusters and nodes, if you have a large amount of traffic using one gate you're going to get lag there, much like Jita 4-4 where 300 peeps are inside 200 are outside good grief.
I don't even hang out at Jita, have no reason to and if I want something from Jita I'd go get it if it weren't laggy and then I'd leave I don't stick around unless its my home station which it isn't and it won't be ever (even if the lag is gone).
creating multiple servers would also reduce the lag but would create lots of empty space on every server there would not be enough of the playerbase to cover most of the systems so this is good and bad mostly on the bad side.
I don't really think I've lost my ships to any serious lag though I have seen weird things like when mission ratting and I go to warp out and the npc rats are still attacking me I'll get blown up when I'm already IN warp and about 1/4 way out though my screen is still moving not stopped so I don't think this is a credible lag I expect lag to more like stop the action (which happened to me when I got gate camped and podded there cuz I couldn't do anything but stare at a frozen screen with my ship shrapnel all over the place.
And you might be surprised I can play this game quite well on dialup and I get the same amount of lag if not better or worse in some areas which is partially why when I get blown up by npcs somewhat halfway into warp doesn't construe the fact its server lag because it probably isn't. And I can tell when the lag isn't contributed by my own connection which I've said before... Jita.

I too am stuck in black screen. I tried to jump into Jita today, and am stuck at the black screen for about 4 hours now.
I also got screwed a couple of days ago in skill points. I podded myself, bought a new clone (with about 4 million extra skillpoints) and then died. I lost a few hours on Battleship 5. My journal entry clearly shows the purchase of the 19 mil SP clone about 10 minutes before I was podded (I only have about 16 mil SP).
A few hours isn't that big a deal, but last time cost me about 5 days.

A few hours isn't that big a deal, but last time cost me about 5 days.

Originally by: Nymos may i ask one thing... what the heck did you code in or add with bloodlines that so totally borked server performance? right after the new hardware before bloodlines it was a dream. then suddenly jump queues appeared, you added "load balancing". performance went downhill. is it so hard to examine what you added in the dragon code branch that ****s up everything?
are you ever able to get server performance stable and playable? there are still major lag issues and database fubars frequently. are you sure you want to release "heat" and other stuff? surely, content creators can contribute something to server performance as well even if they are not programmers, database experts or QA people.
Thats what i asked, my problems didnt start until after bloodlines was introduced. Admitedly there have been some good stretches, but they seem to be fewer and farther inbetween these days.
Also the person talking about everyone spread out, excellent idea, however everyone sells in jita.. it kind of makes it hard when all sellers want to sell at j 4-4 and most people flock there to buy as well. ( however they did mention that delivery system for goods somewhere when you buy them, that might completly solve that problem for a few extra isk to have the items show up where i am )
Also all these anchored security cans in high sec empire space, ever warp into an ice belt with 100 cans there? the lag is horrendus. this has to have an effect on overall performance across the system as each belt sems to be riddled with them in empire. Perhaps limiting the amount of cans put up by individuals/corporations in high sec empire space ( while low and 0.0 would have no limit as these are important for people operating out there without pos, for ammo storage or loot storage ect )
Whatever it is, eve is itself a great game, but it certainly has a hamster not running full speed in the wheel somewhere. If we could get back to pre bloodlines stability you would never see my subscription lapse.

For a thread that's supposed to have information in it, it seems to be lacking any kind of CCP presence for the 28th.
You can bet I'm pi**ed off. It's just not reasonable to give NO information. An ETA would be better than the 'happy BS' of 'we're working as quickly as possible'. Get L3 to give you an ETA or shift your ISP. Chuck a half brick in canary wharf, you should hit three.
I *love* this game, but you can bet I'm telling people about the performance issues over the past ten days. Someone needs to point out to Oveur that his need for speed is grinding to a halt.

You didn't fix the problem after all.. you just keep shoving broken hardware in and hope it lasts just alittle while... I wonder if CCP even has any money? Where did it go? Did you spend all our subscription money on CEO and CFO Holidays?

Can it be so hard to allocate more resources to that system, when half the playerbase (traders) seems to insist on hanging out there?

So, reduced hardware started 2 weeks ago? Any updates?
Introducing heat is a BAAAAAAD idea before getting the lag under control. Who is going to want to overload a mod, when the odds of getting lagged before you can turn off the overload are so low?
Why add time-intensive stuff to a system that you already KNOW is a lagfest?
I have toons who can't even log in for the past 2 hours. On a day off, when I have time to play.

because gaming mags and new players dont concern themselves with lag to much, but the shiny new features and the PR are the thing that drive new customers ( even if they only stay for a few months get fed up and leave) the whole business of rushing and skipping over gameplay issues is entrenced in eve. Its all about the moola. It is starting to bite em on the backside now as a lot of older players are moving on

What I don't get is why some of the sections in EVE aren't cached.
For example, I am in market view, groups, I pick my item and click view details: EVE then queries the db for items in the region. Say there is nothing nearby and you want to go back, you have to click groups and it requeries it all again.
I know its meant to be 'live' data, but considering you can sit there with the window open for hours, it's not a big deal if the data is cached on the client side by 5-15 mins. A few database queries from one person is ok, but multiply that by thousands of people, but at peak I've noticed the database server is very lagged. And its not like i hear of them talking of the SQL server being more than one machine lol
Maybe I'm wrong in some places but please know I am just trying to help. |

Is ther alot of money to be made with courier's as is? ive looked at them, they didnt seem overly well paying for time/isk, but i digress ( that was a question though i wouldn't mind have answered )
I have noticed a few sellers who have started selling at jita or slightly lower then jita prices in the surrounding systems, personally i go there if i can. j 4-4 only when i have too.
Think another problem with jita is all of the alliance people's reseller alts selling off their faction mods they just got back to empire from x complex they ran or x officer they killed ect. Or in general people who just buy those officer mods and resell them themselves, jita seems more like a bazarr with people hawking their wares then actually putting them on contract/market. Most normal sellers, at least this is my belief bring either their goods, or their minerals to jita, build item ( if bringing minerals ) put item on market then leave
regarding the hardware, Is it really hardware? or is it a software issue you are trying to throw hardware at? i am not a tech head but i do know enough who seem to have ideas as to whats happening. But being specialise in automotive electrical systems, i understand sometimes a problem can be difficult to diagnose , like intermittent shorts behind a dashboard.
Whatever the case, please spend more time fixing the problem then trying to add int othe game. You have a strong robust community here, I would imagone the majority of them could wait for new content with the promise of stability.
anyway thanks for at least keeping us sort of updated.

Decreased hardware capacity means that some servers in the cluster are shut down.
If a server in a cluster malfunctions, the cluster performance suffers, because the cluster is now forced to react to the crash, and rebuild and distribute what that server was doing, real-time. The server must first time out to queries from the cluster before the rest of the cluster can begin to react to the malfunction. This can take up to 30 seconds, which is plenty of time to cause extreme performance loss on a real-time server, as well as dropping numerous amounts of clients before the cluster has time to react. By shutting down problematic servers, or the such, you allow the cluster to run at decreased maximum performance, but don't have severe performance loss spikes. You sacrifice peak performance for stability. It's much like pulling out bad sticks of memory in a computer, or under-clocking an overheating processor.

ok... First off the lag issue is not merely in Jita. Secondly if it's not affecting you...great I applaud you now move on to other topics because the non-effect on you doesn't mean it's not affecting others. Thirdly if you want to tell me how and where I should play Eve then by all means feel free to pay for my account/s...then you'll have the right to tell me to move on and play any way YOU want me to play. Oh don't want to do that?? well then let me play the way I want to play.
It's unbelievable the amount of people who think that players should shut up and put up with anything that's not affecting them. Here's a clue....this is NOT a free game we PAY to PLAY and as PAYING customers we also reserve the right to certain expectations. Like being able to PLAY without becoming frustrated by lag in an ever increasing frequency.
Now I know that nothing is perfect, and that there will be times when heck the game may be unavailable but I can tell you that in the last 2 years lag has been an increasingly frustrating issue. Not really surprising because the user base has doubled (at least) in size. However the answer is NOT for other players to say "well stop doing what you love to do in Eve and do something else"
In the meantime I'm happy to let CCP do their job and provide the service and quality we're expecting....so hop to it and do it cause I love this game and I want to keep playing and I'm sure you'd like me to keep paying...

This is a great game world but lag makes this world really suffering. There are ways to be diminished. Upgrading the hardware, rewrite the code more efficinetly, switch to different software(Linux server rings a bell), remove some agents from Jita and the surround areas. I think is bad that almost every agent is giving missions around Jita. Make some forgoten cargos etc disappear after some hours let alone if empty. I don't get also why the pirate npcs often leave behind empty cargos without loot at them. They could just leave nothing...
About that guy that wants to encourage people to start drifting over other sectors and not Jita only i will reply to him that i was one that drifted in missions away from Jita and i had almost no lag at all in other areas. But in one of my courrier missions i got pod killed but someone with a bettleship and artillery over 180KMs away. I knew there would be danger up north but i never expected that i can be killed at such distance. The guy that killed me also killed my pod as well. I was in Condor. I am willing to go drift again on these kind of systems if you are willing to pay me the cash i lost of that pod kill. Lets face it. We all may dream to become pirates sometimes but what really happens is that our funds is always too low to jopertise it. So that is why people roam only at Jita. Afraid of pirates with Battleships that can destroy you in one hit and further pod kill you in 2 hits. You may say "dont go there alone" As if i had another frigate or 2 would make any difference. The big ships the pirates have can't be dealt with no matter how many Condors you have by your side. It will just end in a big massacre. And some guys out there doing such things i believe they must have psycological problems. I mean what fun is that ? One hit kill? And lets say that ok the guy is a pirate and as such he kills people passing by lower security sectors. But pod them? Why? So these are the facts. I won't be going on such sectors any time soon. the pay off of the missions there simply doesn't worth it.
I want to further add that perhaps the EVE company sould consider to allow us to have only 1 character per account. And perhaps it is time for a new EVE server. As far as i am concerned i simply don't log if i see more than 25.000 people on.I don't even try because the gaem in the sectors i plan to roam (Jita and the like) i know will be unpleasant. So i try log on when the others don't. Now if people avoid to log on when big numbers of players are on whats the deal with the ONE world server anyway? One world server is great idea if can support all the people on it. If it can't then there must be another server. Maybe would be better for us noobs too. A new server to explore so that we don't get pod killed by players that are 3 years older than us. And an old server for the established hard core existing players.

Given that ccp has computer tallent way in excess of most people posting on this forum i suggest we forget server issues for a moment and ask if the real problem is in management?
One of the best things about eve is the community and the current 'keep us in the dark and feed us s**t' philosophy is depriving us of the single most important cohesive force in any community - hope. With the long history of lag problems in eve people are loosing hope of ever having that seamless fleet battle experience and untill ccp learn to communicate we will continue to lose hope. I suspect that if ccp asked us kindly to take a few lag saving measurers untill a specific date where they would have the problem solved they would get a big response as our hope returned. This may not be a perfect suggestion but does give us a date to aim for and ccp the oppertunity to say to us 'eve is one of a kind technology and if you help us then you too can be a part of creating this amazing technology.' This makes us feel part of a community instead of 'there wasn't any lag and no you can't have your ship back' which makes us feel like we're having our time and money wasted. If a 'community manager' can not even attempt a MEANINGFUL response in a forum thread that he started then there is a big problem.
Others have mentioned technology management so i'll be breif: tetris - so simple it could be run on a 48k spectrum and one of the most commercially sucessful games of all time air ships - people wanted to fly but didn't have the technology so they filled big baloons with flammable gas and we got the hindenberg
The bottom line is that i would play eve even if it looked like elite on the amiga but i can't play a game that's broken so until ccp employ a technology manager with the foresight and brawn to prevent the geeks from runing before they can walk then we're all screwed.
CCP we love you and love the game so please please sort it out

This lag problem has been in every modem/online game I have played sense 1976. Other online games have players on several servers. This is the first game I have played where everyone is playing on 1 server. I think it will work as long as the servers are continually updated and more are added to help with the load I solute EVE techs for doing a difficult job. I also think most you players are a bunch of winers.

Well what I say about the whole thing is start posting GM's at major mission and trade hubs looking for ISK farmers.
It is very very easy to find an ISK farmer. Look for the guy that has a garbed set of names like xsewras1 xsewras2 xsewras3 xsewras4 xsewras5 xsewras6 and each of the toons was made the same day and only min apart on creation.
I have seen at least 4 diffrent isk farmers flying in the Kaunokka, and Motsu area. It's even better when you see all 6 or 7 of the macro farmers toons hovering near a gate IDLE and AFK.
Another way CCP can monitor is look at IP connections to the server. If the same IP connects more then say 4 times, watch the accounts transactions. If they have alot of ISK movement and constantly farming roid fields, or doing high end missions. You bet your POD they are selling isk for real cash.
Kick the farmers out of the game and make a more active way of stopping them will = less lagg.

I haven't read the full 8 pages, but here are my suggestions. Stop the trial accounts some how :P Or atleast find a way to limit it by computer. Spread out the level 4 agents, and add more good ones... Ammatar Navy for example has many L4 Q20 agents all bunched up in the same stations, in Dysa, Assah, and Aranir.

I am curious to know why you think they are macro.
To me they seems simply high sek gankers don't bothering to give meaningful names to suicide alts.
I don't dubt that there are macros doing mining, but I am convinced that macromissioning is a myth.
Or maybe you are confusing macros with sweathshops?, the difference is huge.
On a more useful point on lag, CCP could think to add a "avoid system X" option to autopilot.
If that was done people running from caldari to minmatar space (a rout that often pass through Jita) would avoid that system (and obvously most of the other know overcrowdes systems could be avoided too).
On some of the routes I use often I have learned what systems to aim for when programming my route to avoid undesiderable systems, but on long voyages it is not so easy.

All I have to say is that I live in the Midwest, and the only severe lag I get is in three situations A) Jita (of course) B) Warping into a new deadspace area C) Heavy combat with a few friends when lots of enemies, drones, and missiles = lag (this could quite possibly be on my end, since my computer is outdated)
None of these but Jita lag would be crippling in combat, all I have to do is click my modules and the like a few seconds early (though it is annoying how double-clicking doesn't work sometimes), and usually there is no problem.
And Jita lag is a worse foe than any fleet of battleships ever assembled. ------------------------------ One more soldier off to war... And one Velator in my hangars. |

I've used them quite a bit for personal items and am always pleasantly surprised to see someone pick them up within the hour.
I wouldn't have thought there was all that much call for it but given how quickly mine are grabbed I think there must be a fair number of people doing it. My contracts are usually fairly low-value (10mil deposit for 100k payment). I have a feeling that high value might be harder to shift simply because someone who can afford a deposit of 100mil is unlikely to be interested in a 1mil return.
I could be wrong though.
Maybe there are people out there that make a career from running courier contracts and I suppose that if they can find them often enough to run several at once it might be quite handy. -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

I bet.
Unfortunately I think you'll find that:
a)this thread is talking about lag not crashes. b)you are in a very small minority here (I've never had to do the above in 3.5 years of playing) so the problem is almost certainly with your computer.
I can give a suggestion for your problem though:Next time you have a running installation make a copy of it and burn it to CD. Next time it goes wrong restore the copy (deleting the corrupted version first and remembering that files copied from CD are often marked read-only) and run it. I have copied the Eve install directory between five different computers over the years and it's always worked. -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

Originally by: Hitomi Kanzakis I haven't read the full 8 pages, but here are my suggestions. Stop the trial accounts some how :P Or atleast find a way to limit it by computer. Spread out the level 4 agents, and add more good ones... Ammatar Navy for example has many L4 Q20 agents all bunched up in the same stations, in Dysa, Assah, and Aranir.
Trial accounts are already limited so that only a small number of them can log in at once. That number is so small that they cannot be contributing to lag in any significant way.
Spreading people out is hard when some of them have invested time and effort in building up loyalty points with one particular agent. Thankfully in rev 2. it sounds like that is being addressed with LP being corp based instead of agent. Hopefully that will allow people who want to leave Motsu/Saila to do without throwing away all their work.

That's called the daily downtime. 11am to 12pm GMT every day.
I would advise you not to dispute that time until you have researched what GMT means. You will only leave yourself open to ridicule -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

A year or so ago I'd have been inclined to agree with you but having recently moved to The Forge and had to make the occasional trip to Jita (implants mainly) I have to correct you. Lag does exist. Most of the time when I enter Jita through a gate it 'only' takes half a minute for the overview to populate and for the local menu to become available. Most of the time it 'only' takes twice that (the best part of a minute) for me to be able to warp away from a station after undocking.
Saturday AM in the hour before DT (which is usually okay) I had to relog on every session change just to get control of my ship. It actually took two relogs when leaving the station because of the black screen of death. I very nearly raised a stuck petition at one point.
If by 'lag' the OP means that sometimes they have to wait several seconds (maybe over a minute) before the client responds to a command (or even just waiting for the client to reach the state when a command can be issued) then Jita suffers from lag.
This is the correct definition of lag and, yes, Jita does suffer from it.
It's usually just a few seconds delay for me but this weekend it was almost unplayable. -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

Okay guys, take off your "blame CCP for everything" helmets for a while k? Yea EVE lags, but there is lots of servers your connection bounces before getting to EVE server. I've done tracert to EVE server couple o times and for me its London that lags.

I saw this post on another website that was discussing another issue altogether, but I think it sums up what is happening here. I have used the "bold" function to illustrate my point as to what I see is the biggest issue(s).
Quote: The reason is also partly, in my experience, that software developers listen way too much to the few, vocal power users who want all kinds of special adaptations and options, rather than finding out what the great majority of users actually need and want. The result is often over-complicated user interfaces, and hard to maintain code because of all the codepaths added to accomodate the hard to satisfy wants of some power users. Once the interface becomes hard to use, the ordinary, quiet users turn to other programs, and power users become even more dominating, leading to a vicious circle of program sectarianism.
It is not only the programmers' fault, though. Far too few users bother to suggest interface simplification,or even know how to advocate it. Merely complaining will not work - developers need to be shown that it can be done, and how, by means of mock-ups or illustrations. A few innovative user interface interested users could do wonders for many projects simply by drawing new user interfaces and submitting them to various free software projects, asking if they are interested in going a few rounds of design iterations with them. Often an outside eye, and interest in doing some adapting from both sides, is all that is needed.

Their is more than just lag going on lately. My accounts freeze on logging, freeze on loggout... computer freezes up on log outs, overview settings are wiped across all accounts, drones need to be re-assigned to new groups constantly. All that happens if i get connected at all. In 4 years of eve this is the worst i have seen it. New installs do not help the problem. Guys u need to get this fixed asap.

Nothing is more frustrating then not being able to play due to problems. I work and have a family, so when I do get to go on I am real annoyed when it does not work properly. Market wont open, get kicked off, black screen of death on undocking, delays on jumping, lag when fighting!! - ive had a guts full. It does not happen all the time, but enought to anoy the crap out of me.
I have read the posts and have some things that I want to see.
1. CLEAR information from CCP as to the cause, intended resolution & timescale of this problem. We are paying customers and NEED TO KNOW. Lets all stop guessing as to what the problem cause is and get a proper statement of the problem and fix from our supplier. Being in the dark is what upsets us, and destroys hope. It also fuels rumour posts cause we all like to gossip.
2. Move agents around if that is what needs to be done. Agents could issue a statement saying they have moved to another system due to congestion effecting their business. Thay way agent loyalty points would remain intact.
3. ISK penalties for people who say 'its not effecting me so get over it'

Reiterating some previous suggestions: 1. Limited lifespan on anchored containers. Giant masses of these things, especially the ones recruiting for corporations, are real eyesores if nothing else. They might not have a huge effect on server performance, but every bit would help at this point. 2. Disable trial accounts until performance issues are sorted. 3. Probably too radical for most, but perhaps disable the ability to sustain accounts via isk. How many people are running multiple accounts simultaneously yet paying nothing? 4. Afk logoff after 10 minutes.
Thanks for a great game, CCP. --- Be true to your work, your word, and your friend. Henry David Thoreau |

Interesting, I'd be inclined to say the opposite. Lag was more noticable a year ago. Where as stutter was less so.

Yeah, I've read about such occurances. I guess I'm just not on at those times or there is another issue creating the lag that some are experiencing.
My main has lived a couple of jumps from Jita all it's life and always shopped there.
Dunno, some have lag, some don't. I'm more concerned that some are blaming Tranquility for stutter problems when Tranquility has nothing to do with it. And they should be complaining about how bad the stutter has got instead.

1 relative stability 2 new patch comes out 3 instability 4 things gradually get better 5 repeat from step 1
is this caused by ccp being unable to test stuff on tranquility untill they launch it? If so maybe a once a month beta day on tranquility would help? A regular beta day could be a very powerful marketing tool as well as a management tool for reducing the disparity between marketing needs (big flashy releases) and technical needs (the ability to run big flashy releases).
I suspect the hardest working and most reliable folk at ccp are the techs who take all the flack in the forums so if the problem is a manager asking for more and more content without checking they have the ability to provide the content, then i'll save the moderator from having to edit my oppinion of management within enthusiast run businesses and finish the scentence here.

If anyone thinks i'm being a bit hard on the GM's then i'd like to remind them the the PS3 / x box 360 have put microsoft and sony firmly inside the mmog market. If we have not got to the root of the lag (and communication) problem by the time they release a rival space mmog then you can say goodbye to eve.
But hey, who cares if eve is gone by next year, it's just a game.

On the serious side, I know CCP is doing everything possible and I'm not going to second guess them. My only request is that they put up some kind of notification when server connection problems are likely. I don't mind staying out of harms way when there are problems. I would just like to know that problems are likely BEFORE I take out my mining ship or change to a short training.

fictive conversation beetween CCP Wrangler and yieasase
Prologue:
Since one year i play EVE - O and i cant rember, that my ships losses not towards 90 percent to the server. Cause i eat hormone-trated beef. As regards technique of the Support team, all know thier replys.i thought lets start a conversation with CCP Wrangler.
yieasase: Hey CCP Wrangler, i have a problem
CCP Wrangler: Hurry up or you will catch it
yieasase: Every time my ship blows up, i asked in ts, is one of those fill with beer nodes crashed?
CCP Wrangler: As you may have noticed we have had some performance issues on Tranquility lately.
yieasase: i see, sorry, i dont understand
CCP Wrangler: To address this we are running at decreased hardware capacity, while we work on this at hardware, software and content levels.
yieasase: ya, how long does it take, before....., im waiting since one year and i thought EVE-ONLINE consist of 100 ¦000 to 140 ¦000 players
CCP Wrangler We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you and we assure you that we are working hard on fixing it as fast as possible.
yieasase: yea, as you know, we men buy a thing and then we build it in. Is it possible that your Serverteam is compose of, erm you know the other part of gender or the buyer cant decision making which colour the new nodes should have?
CCP Wrangler: I don¦t understand the question.
yieasase: efficiency brings the money or?
CCP Wranlger: no, hours,no months......
yieasase: let me calculate; 10 bugs per month multiplied 12 months multiplied (let me say 70 000 periodic payments) 70 000 is 8 400 000 bugs
CCP Wrangler e don¦t like bugs, i would say feature
yieasase: Do you mean to say....?
CCP Wrangler Yea, its possible to go in a outpost and the lag is reduced, cause a lot of players are not in space and we dont to require new hardware on such stuff
yieasase: omg i delete my account now
CCP Wrangler There is no need for you to,.... cause been there, done that
yieasase: If you wouldn¦t already exist, i would invent you
CCP Wrangler No problem! Let`s hope so, by goodness!
epilogue:
Just after this conversation, my account was banned. I made trip found a new girlfriend and made with her babys, now im busted and unhappy. After considerable time, i thought self-destruction you wake up in a new house and enjoy your After life. In the papers stood written in capitals.
CCP FOUND THE PROB; ONE GUY OF THE SERVER-TEAM THOUGHT FILL BEER INTO A NODE AND IT RUNS FASTER

I truly hate to complain, but it has been 16 days and counting since the original post. Your hardware is broken, and it hasn't been fixed yet.
I spend a lot of my game time running market orders, and that just hasn't been possible lately. I don't want to wait 15-20 seconds after trying to modify a sell price to have the ability to actually edit the text field. Not when I have 40 other orders to update.
It's quite possible you've developed the best game I've ever played, and I've been gaming for many, many years. Really quite a shame that you let it run for WEEKS without fixing broken hardware though. I'm sorry, thats a deal breaker for me.
I've cancelled both of my accounts (not because I'm trying to make a statement, but because I simply don't have $30 a month to throw away on a game that I'm not able to play without broken hardware being so damned obvious every time I log in.) If you can resolve the hardware issues before the accounts expire (I truly hope you do), then I'll happily renew them. If not, thanks for making a great game. Its good fun when it runs properly. Unfortunately, I will sacrifice the great gameplay of EVE for the superior hardware and server stability of a lesser game (I can name about 6), because my time and money are limited.

Not to add to the cacophony of whiny newbie b!tchs, or to the mindless ôbend over and take itö droll of the arrogant old timers butà (apparently I am going to, hence the ôàö)
I know all about U.S. health care law, but not consumer law. However, I expect the same principals apply, (i.e.: as consumers we are entitled to certain protections). Specifically, when a product that is paid for in advance is suddenly made unavailable we as the consumers of the product are entitled either a replacement or to recompense for our damages. In a case like this where our ôtime spent enjoying the game and the electronic company of othersö (that sounds creepy when you say it out loud, go ahead give it a shot) is immeasurable and varies from one to another so what we have left is liquidated damages (i.e., the monthly access fee) for the portion of the game we are unable to access. Now, I have read (and re-read) the EULA and have not found where CCP (or EVE or whomever is the controlling corp. is) is protected from these legal principals for hard & software failure, regardless of the cause. ThatÆs not to say there is no such provision, but an ôexcessiveö amount of ôdown timeö could be considered a material breech of contract.
Regardless of where they are headquartered, that they do business in a country makes them subject to the laws of that country (should they wish to continue to do business there). In any event, it would be nice were someone with consumer law experience to weigh in. I wonder if anyone has a log of some sort identifying down times, lags etcà Also, where is that CCP Wrangler numbskull? No updates or news to the thread from him? Why would he just stop replying? Who decides to whom he will reply and when? There are many clear and cogent arguments raised that apparently CCP is either unable or unwilling to address.
We as players are obliged to keep our end of the bargain (ie: pay, not violate the EULA etc). CCP likewise has an obligation to provide the product pitched/sold to us rather than just supplying what they can when they can.
Anyway, that was just my two-cents. Here are a few house keeping items for the brain dead among you who are just so eager to have someone read/listen to you that you forget to read for content and context: 1.Yes, eve is probably the best MMORPG out. 2.No, IÆm not going to cancel my 3 accounts (wow, 3à maybe I need a hobby) 3.US consumer law is not my specialty. 4.In no way should the above be considered legal advice, it is merely the ramblings of someone who cares about each and every one of you (it's Mom of course!) 5.Within ôreasonö, we have to accept that EVE or CCP is going to have hard & software problems that will be an inconvenience 6.EVE or CCP is the last word when it comes to whether or not they will reimburse for any losses incurred (in game or otherwise), so long as no one challenges them (ie: they define the term "reason" as stated in 5, unless a higher authority compells them to change their definition).
So we can either do something about it, ie pursue and protect our rights or sit back and keep trying to log in or decide if its worth it to write out that petition.
Respectfully submitted this 31st day of May, 2007 Momlv6026, for the defense

While I don't have a problem with your expectations of CCP it prolly should be pointed out that US law is not relevant. You need to be looking at International law instead. Or Iceland law.

no offense buddy but i started my paid account with a trial account. If it wasn't for a trial account i would never have played Eve Online. And this is the case of many users. Also Eve Online is a very complex game, many can't understand it. So they pay 20$ just to play 3 days ? That's not fair i say.
I say what others have said. Delete ALL trial accounts that have expired for more than 2 months. Permit only one trial account per IP ADRESS for every 6 months. That should fix it.
As for the hardware problems ... i know that the Eve World is handled by many servers. Each server handles only a part of the solar systems found in eve world. Maybe first CCP should take another look at their net code, review it, fix it until it has minimum errors, and after that increase the number of servers and put only ONE server FOR EVERY SINGLE SYSTEM THAT IS VERY POPULATED. For example : Caldari : JITA . There are 600 people in it almost any time. If there would be one server only to handle JITA than there would be no more lag in that system. Leave one server for more systems where those systems have a very low population.
Increase internet connections for eve online. In some cases one internet connection can provide all the lag in the world for the server in question. In other cases the user is the problem of the lag. But where many users experience lag at the same time is one of three : net code for the server (the one that handles all the eve world), servers (number of servers per single region), internet connection. You should check out all of them three.
Those are my two cents.
I only have one rule: Everyone fights, no one quits. |

That might kill a few active alts, mine included, but it sure won't do **** for lag unless it also stops people being active in Eve. And that would be a slightly brain-dead thing to want.
Btw, lag is rarely an issue for me. Stutter on the other hand is huge and is keeping me from playing Eve in any serious manner - hense I'm using a trial account to post this. But stutter is not related to the cluster or internet performance so I'll keep it short for this thread.
