There are alot of players who I dont keep in touch with anymore from different corps, just like I dont keep in touch with some people I still consider RL friends. ** happens, things get in the way of friendships and people drift. That doesnt mean that I wouldnt be shocked to hear of their death, nor that I wouldnt come to their funeral. So I suppose thats one "good" purpose it serves. Now you could argue that you cant make the same connection with RL newspapers/relationships with eve relationships/forum posts, but I think that is clearly short sighted. There is obviously community interaction here, both in game and perhaps more magnified on these forums. A culture has developed, both of a wider MMO gamer culture and one specific to eve. It was inevitable that just as people incorperate RL politics, history and prejudice to eve, so to will they incorperate cultural institutions, such as newspapers (eve tribune) and radio, eve tv etc etc. The application of a form of obituary is just part of that. To reject the idea of leaving an obituary is to reject the entirity of the idea of an eve "community". Its obvious that community exists, for better or worse in some cases. Now im kinda going to contridict myself in saying that I actually agree with you that the majority of people posting in RL deaths/ obituary threads need to be shot, especially the ones that say crap like "wow didnt know him, thats so sad etc etc" Most probably are just posting in a form of "trollin" much in the same way that you can go onto chat rooms and people pretend to give a crap about your teen emo angst. Still, thats not the point tho is it? Some people are simply posting RIP etc etc and I feel that is valid. I havnt actually followed the who goonswarm hassling a dead person dramabomb but I will say this. It is disrespectful and most of the people doing it are probably quite insecure and emotionally reclusive. They arent unique to eve, theres lots of wa.nkers in RL too. I would think they are just seeking attention probably, or trying to reinforce their own shortcomings by pretending to be so hardedged or disrespectful. Lame really.
