Luckily I downloaded the full setup file so I didn't get owned by it. And to say that this is the biggest f*ck up in MMO history might not be an understatement at this point. But the game does look amazing now, so I'm happy. Sucks for the other people though. Survival of the fittest.

In the windows install, choose not to format the drive, it will then ask you if you want to continue(I think) say yes, then it will ask if you want to delete the old windows install, say yes. There, the windows directory was the only casualty. a fubared windows doesn't mean you have to lose your data!

Even though this can be fixed, the majority of people that play this game are running windows XP, meaning they all have to take steps to make sure this doesn't happen again. What about the next time a big update comes out. Do you think people are going to wait to play the game just to see if there has been any problems. I love this game and appreciate the people that make it, but it is very disappointing to see this happen. I hope that there would be some sort of reimbursement for those that the problem affected whether in RL or ingame. Something should be done to try and compensate and make up for this blunder.

I don't know anything about computers so started up something with partition stuff. I re-installed windows and now I can't find any files. Everything is empty. At the end of all the popups you should be left with a working boot.ini msconfig WILL NOT rebuild your boot.ini if you do not have one. It will only validate you exsisting boot.ini thanks that worked great. I got lucky and my PC rebooted fine even though I didnt have a boot.ini Im going to have to call my friend though, he may not be so lucky

P.S If anyone has any idea how to boot from DVD drive i would apprciate it - i tried the f6 option mentioned above but it does absolutly nothing. P.P.S i would use my dusty old vista upgrade disc but....wont work either... -----------------------------------------

I'm just lucky I didn't turn my computer off before going to bed like I usually do. I downloaded the "winxpboot.ini" file to C:\, renamed it to "boot.ini", went into msconfig and clicked on the "boot.ini" tab and then selected "Check all boot paths". At this point, I keep getting a "System Configuration Utility" error message which closes everything before the next steps can be done. Is it okay that I just have this renamed file in C:\? Will I be able to restart my PC with no problems?

I don't really see why compensation should be given for something that at worst takes a few hours to fix(if it takes you that long to find a friend with a copy of XP, or to make some 'geeky' friends ;) )

There is a very high chance for deleted data to be recoverable, unless you overwrote your full harddisk at leat 2-3 times. Any decent technician should be able to help you, or at least point you to a recovery expert.

That only applies if: a) You have a second computer to browse forums. b) After seeing your computer failing to boot, first thing you do is go to EVE forums using your other computer. And this patch(bird) has been written(trained to) so it deletes a vital system file(poos in your head).

Go into your bios and change the boot order of your devices so that your dvd drive is on top or better yet if you have a floppydisk download a windows xp bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com. 3. I'm doing a full time job, part time degree, and am involved with various things RL that take up time as well. I don't get a lot of free time...

P.P.S i would use my dusty old vista upgrade disc but....wont work either... Your computer will look at drives (Hard discs/DVD etc) in a order. this is set in the computer BIOS. Ready up on your particular BIOS from your mobo/computer supplier as to how to get into it and change said order. Generaly its usualy case of holding the escape key or F1 or F2 or DEL key upon initial boot and then going to the boot order. You need the DVD at the top of the list and can leave it there as if no disc it will boot from the Harddisc next - as per order. Have good read and get familiar with what is taking place and you will come away from this a better man. Shout if your stuck - lots of great people here keen to bury this SNAFU.

I think its only reasonable to at least guide people who have lost important data to the idea that "formatted" does not automatically mean "lost forever". In some cases it might be a viable option to try a recovery!

I have 7 eve accounts, I hope I dont get any bills this month :p But at least I have survived what is being called the worst patch in the history of gaming.

Failing that, you can fix boot.ini from Linux, it's just not pretty... possibly find the nearest geek and offer to buy them a drink/cookies if they'll fix it for you?
